Personality

Miyako appears to be a very kind girl, albeit shy and somewhat cowardly given her hesitance to fight, especially against other magical girls compared to her teammates. While she will stand up for herself for something she strongly believes in, she also seems to be a bit naive and easily swayed based on how she was manipulated by Oriko Mikuni into believing she was someone who was honest about her faults and truly understood her, turning on and accusing Lina of using the group and blaming her for Mio and Futaba's deaths. When she dies, her final thoughts were that she only wanted to be a heroine.

Story

Backstory

Miyako's backstory prior to joining Lina was unknown until it was revealed by Kuroe Mura on her Twitter.

Miyako used to be a normal girl that liked dolls and magical girls when she was younger. When Kyubey met her, Miyako didn't know what to wish for since becoming a magical girl was her dream. After struggling to come up with a wish, she ended up having her short hair cut long and straight like a magical girl's. She jumped into the world of magical girls out of sheer admiration, but after joining Lina's team, she suddenly realized the harsh reality and had no choice but go with the flow. [1]

During Sadness Prayer

Miyako first appears fighting against Sasa Yuuki with her teammates, though they are forced to flee when Sasa tricks them with a fake soul gem and calls for help from random bystanders mistaking them for muggers. Later she appears again with her team when they discover Mio's body. When Lina initially takes the blame for Mio's death, Miyako is quick to say otherwise. They are later confronted by a policewoman in Mitakihara where they learn about the recent murders of two girls before meeting up at their hotel room to hunt for Sasa. Miyako is the first to look further into the killings and speculates a Witch might have done it but Lina notes can't be as it seemed unusual for a Witch to kill someone that way. After learning about the black magical from Kyubey, she tries to convince Lina and Mai that they should return to Kazamino to formulate a new battle plan, but Mai refuses to leave the city at Sasa and her Witches' mercy. Before Miyako can elaborate more on her reasoning, Kirika breaks into their room and begins to fight them with Sasa and Oriko joining in shortly after.

During the surprise attack Miyako ends up facing up against Oriko who just wishes to talk to her rather than fight. When Miyako asks why, Oriko replies that it's because she is the only one who has realized that the battle is meaningless and proceeds to tell the Kazamino girl about her wish to save the world. Eventually the two girls join Sasa, Lina, and Mai who are still fighting. Lina tries to attack Oriko but Miyako gets in the way to protect her. When Lina tells her to move so they can avenge Mio, Miyako confronts Lina about her behavior and how she's had enough of it. She even goes so far as to say that the deaths of Mio and Futaba are Lina's fault, as well as defending Oriko and her actions. Lina then turns into a Witch and kills Miyako. As she dies her final thoughts are that she didn't want any of this to happen and only wanted to be a heroine.

Powers and Abilities

She is not shown to have any unique abilities, though it's shown in a few panels that she has one or two dolls that assist her in battle to an unknown degree.

According to Kuroe Mura, her unique magic is the manipulation of inorganic objects, and likely uses this power to control the movement and attacks of her dolls.

Etymology

  • The kanji of her last name mean "aid" or "help" (佐) and "tree" (木).
  • The kanji of her first name (京) means "capital".

Trivia

  • Her design seems to be based on Little Red Riding Hood.
  • Miyako seems to have different dolls with different designs: a doll with a suit and a hat (ep 8.), a doll with twin pigtails and a long Victorian dress (ep.9), a doll with gray hair with a gothic lolita dress (vol 2 art) and a long head doll with a musketeer outfit and button eyes (official art).
  • Her death seems to have hints about her past and wish, as she is decapitated by Lina's witch her long hair gets cut and she thinks about how she just wanted to be a magical girl before her Soul Gem gets destroyed.
