Summary

A Magical Girl who wears a mask of lies to protect her family. Admired by her classmates as an honor student in both studies and sports, and sociable as well. Despite appearances, she comes from a poor home and is hustling to find her way to riches.

Doppel Description

Rukh, Sae's doppel

The Doppel of social climbing. Its form is a pawn. The master of this emotion watches her Doppel break through its shell to reinvent itself, and sees her own future within it. Her Doppel is proud of itself for obtaining power without relying on anyone else, and perhaps as a result of this self-confidence, it utterly refuses to accept advice or counsel from any other. This applies to its master as well: it may be cooperative towards her when their opinions happen to align, but it will staunchly refuse to nod its head after even a single irritation. It also behaves mercilessly towards everyone other than its master– even if they may be weak, helpless beings like its former self– and will use its blazing-hot staves to skewer all who disagree with it. As its master watches this, she views it as a show of false bravado, borne out of its fear at the memory of how weak it was in the past.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

Sae helps Hinano Miyako load her lab equipment to a daycare. Sae says that she loves helping Hinano and tells her that she works at that daycare as a volunteer alongside Maria Yuki. Hinano says that she didn't expect that from the daughter of a wealthy family and a good reputation while Sae claims that it is "a social experiment." Sae asks Hinano about the experiment and she says that it is going to use dry ice and soap and Sae says that "she will do the same experiment again". Hinano asks her how she knows about it and Sae berates herself because Hinano doesn't remember their time together before. Sae telle her that her youngest brother saw her show, while Hinano is surprised to know that Sae a younger brothers, so she proceeds to tell Hinano about her younger brothers and her younger sister. Sae thinks that she should reveal herself to her friends little by little to prevent her mistakes from the past repeating themselfs. At kindergarten, Maria tells the children the story of Urashima Taro, and Hinano remembers how she and Maria recently watched a play from the Drama Club about Urashima Taro with a modern twist. Sae thinks about the play and says that the ending was sad, but Hinano doesn't remember it that way. Maria greets her friends and asks what they are talking about. Hinano tells her about the play and how it seems that she and Sae saw two different versions, to which Maria says that it is probably because she heard that the play they saw changed the script at the last minute in the finale. Sae is surprised by this and Hinano remembers that the screenwriter mentioned it before starting the play.

In a flashback it's shown that the screenwriter, a girl from Sae's grade, went upstage to thank all her fellow drama club members and announce the last minute change in her play, but hopes that everyone likes it and hope that makes them smile. Back in the present Hinano says that she "didn't know" the girl who wrote the play, but it seemed like she was a little nervous. Sae gets sad when she hears this but she decides to pretend not to feel that way and says that explains it because that girl let her read her script and she didn't know about the other ending because she couldn't see the play. Hinano says she didn't know it was like that and asks if they were close. Sae says that she was her best friend before she moved away and she feels kind of bad for not having seen her play because she really wanted to see it, remembering everything that happened that led up to her wish. Sae explains that due to her selfish wish, Hinano and Maria don't retain their original memories.

Before making her wish, Sae was helping a kouhai from her in a voluntary work both were and then load things from an old lady. Then in school she helped her classmates at school as always and told them that she is happy to help and everyone wants to make up for her, but she says that she will gladly accept sweets for his younger siblings. The teacher appears and says that the school received a call from the old lady, thanking for Sae's help, revealing that she knew her name and her school from the backpack she had. Sae reveals that she has used that backpack since she was in elementary school and is embarrassed, but the teacher says that everyone should learn from Sae. That afternoon, Sae meets in an empty classroom with her best friend. Sae complains to her about how hard the day was for her while her friend laughs that she "hit Sae's switch" and tells her that she sounds like an old man for complaining, but Sae shuts her up by saying that's the only thing. place where you can express yourself freely. Sae tells her that her day's work was perfect to the point that they called to thank her and that made her happy. Sae's friend points out that they knew who she was because of her backpack and Sae says that she didn't go with ulterior motives and she just doesn't have the money to buy a new backpack. Sae's friend tells her that she is amazing because of how hard she works, but Sae insists that she has to work hard, and her friend says that she doesn't have convincing relationships with rich girls and everything she does is like she's the hero of a movie. comics that you like. Sae's friend reveals that she based her main character on Sae because she is so strong and cool, so she made the male protagonist like Sae. Sae is embarrassed but asks if she can ask for royalties. Sae proceeds to say that she has good news, but is interrupted by the arrival of Hinano and Maria. Sae asks them not to scare her like that while Hinano says that the contrast between the real Sae and the Sae who acts in front of others is immense, but Maria finds her charming. Sae's friend says that it is Sae's attitude about her that inspires her to write.

Hinano asks about the final act and Sae's friend says she doesn't have it yet while Maria says she can consult them whenever she wants. Hinano asks Sae about her part-time job and she reveals that that is the information she wanted to discuss: she is going to give private lessons to the daughter of the principal of a prestigious school, the same girl she works with at her charity work. Sae believes that if she can build a good reputation as a tutor she will have more opportunities in the future. Maria says that Sae is quite the "planner" as she laughs. Hinano asks if it's safe for Sae, but she says that her family is still struggling with payments to make and she can't afford to be complacent with small jobs. Hinano asks Sae not to overexert herself, so Sae jokingly asks Hinano for a massage and Hinano "agrees" and she starts tickling Sae.

Sae's friend leaves for her club activities, while Hinano invites Sae to see her next science club show with soap and dry ice, and Sae agrees although she says that they have already done that experiment before. At night, as Sae walks back to her house she complains about her clients' poor treatment at her work. At that moment Kyubey appears in front of her and offers her a contract. Sae reveals she has already met Kyubey before her and tells him that she is not interested in the words of a "talking white raccoon". Sae doesn't trust Kyubey because she believes a wish is too good to be true and she knows the things her mother has gotten herself into for trusting salesman like that, so Kyubey backs away from her saying that he will continue to insist. When she gets home, Sae sees a debt collector running out and hears her parents talking about a wage garnishment, so Sae asks them about this, and thinks about everything her family has gone through due to their poverty and He knows that his love is not enough to survive. Sae tells her parents about her new job and she tells them that she will help them by working there and that in one month she will be able to pay everything they owe and they will be able to stay together. Sae's youngest brother hears her and starts to cry saying that they are going to be separated from her, but Sae assures him that she will take care of him and her other siblings because she has decided to protect her family.

The next day Sae tells all of her friends what happened to her family, revealing to them how they fled her old city in the past and she promised herself to look after his younger brother, and now she is doing the same for all her little siblings. Hinano says that Sae really loves little children because of her younger brothers and sister, and Sae says that's why she loves Hinano too, making fun of her. Maria asks if they will be okay with the garnishment, but Sae says that as long as she works for a whole month and gets money it will be enough. Sae's friend tells her that if she can't go to her play tomorrow she is fine, but Sae insists that even though she hates fantasy she wants to go to see her play. Maria congratulates Sae again for getting her job while Sae's friend tells her that she seems to have an "evil" smile and she says that she "hit the mark" by finding the perfect job. At that moment Sae hears a noise but when she looks through the door she doesn't find anyone. Sae's friend says that she could use her for the villain of her story, but Sae claims that this "bad personality" of hers is just a joke, while Hinano and Maria admit that for a moment they felt that she could be like that. Hinano warns Sae not to act like that in front of others while Sae says she is very excited about her new job.

The next day Sae meets with Maria and Hinano to see her friend's work, but is called by the mother of the girl she is going to give private classes to, who tells her that her services are no longer required, but when Sae He asks for an explanation, the woman hangs up the phone. Sae runs off but she doesn't listen to Hinano and Maria, who know that this will be Sae's friend's last play and that she "hadn't told him anything yet." Sae goes to the girl's place and asks her and her mother why they don't want her services. The girl says that she thought she came from a wealthy family like her, but upon hearing her talk to her friends in that room she realized that she was "cheating" her. Sae tries to explain that she misunderstood things, but the two say that because Sae is poor, she cannot be trusted, because they are afraid that Sae will steal things from them, which makes Sae remember the same thing that happened to her at her old school at her old school in her old city.

In a flashback, when Sae was little, she was accused by one of her classmates of having stolen another classmate's keychain because Sae is poor, thinking she did it because she thought the keychain was cute. Two girls even accused Sae of being a liar just for being poor when she denied having stolen the keychain, and the girl that accused Sae pretended to have been assaulted by Sae. Sae's teacher scolded her for this and they had to call Sae's parents, who apologized for what happened although eventually everything was resolved and the keychain was found, the sad face of her parents was recorded in Sae's mind when she asked why they had to apologize when she did nothing and in the end everything was resolved. Her parents told her that it is because normal people distrust the poor, motivating Sae to want to get out of her poverty and hide who she really was for fear of being misjudged again. Back in the present, the mother of her kouhai assures that she is right because Sae cannot reply, but Sae is busy thinking about her friend's, and then her work and her family's situation, saying that by putting on a mask people will always see her in a bad light and she scolds herself for having fantasized about having a normal adolescence and friends taking into account her situation. At the Minaginagi Freedom Academy, Hinano and Maria explain Sae's absence to Sae's friend, although she does not seem to care and is even glad that she hid the fact that it would be her last play to not worry Sae about her job, saying that it will also change the sad ending of the play because it is based on Sae and she wants her to have happiness with her family.

Sae thinks that the girl will ruin her reputation by being very popular and she blames herself for being so naive, but at that moment Kyubey appears and she again offers her a contract. Sae thinks about her family and her friends, and the life she wants to have. Sae says that she still doesn't trust Kyubey, but whether she is God or the Devil she will make a contract with hers and proceeds to make her wish: "I want everyone at school to believe that I'm the daughter of a respectable family!". Sae's wish erases the misunderstanding and she can remain as a tutor to her wealthy kouhai. Later, Kyubey wants to explain to Sae what it means to be a magical girl, but Sae ignores him and returns to her school, but the play has already finished. Sae wants to apologize but she can't find any of her friends in the classroom, she decides to return home when she receives a message that your mom was scammed again. The next day Sae looks again in the usual classroom for her friends but they don't arrive. Sae remembers all the good times the four of them had and wonders if the others are mad at her. Sae leaves the classroom and runs into Maria, but when she speaks to her Maria is surprised and asks if they had a meeting for the volunteer job they were doing together in the daycare. Sae is surprised to see that Maria was being to formal to her and runs out, only to run into Hinano who only recognizes her as the exemplary second-year high school student who works alongside her friend Maria.

Sae runs away crying when she sees that neither Hinano nor Maria seem to remember that they are her friends. When she gets to her locker, Sae finds a note from her best friend, who apparently didn't remember that they were friends either because she said goodbye to her formally saying that she always seemed like a great girl and that she wished they could be closer before she moved away from Kamihama City. Sae wonders what is happening and at that moment Kyubey appears to tell her that she must hunt a witch because her soul gem is getting cloudy a little. Sae agrees but asks about what happened to her friends. Kyubey believes that the effect of Sae's wish erased her friendship with her friends, as she wanted that all the students of her school think that she was something that wasn't true at all. Sae agrees to listen to Kyubey about fighting witches but asks for a moment alone in the classroom where she used to meet with her friends. Sae chastises herself for only thinking about her family and having erased her friendship with the only girls who understood her, thinking that this must be her punishment, and that in this way her true self was completely erased from school. Sae later berates Kyubey for her wish when he says that he thought she would want to improve her family's situation. Sae gets upset saying why Kyubey didn't suggest that to her, but he says that she can't make suggestions to wishes, so Sae says that he is just like the scam salesmen.

As Sae heads to the witch's barrier she thinks about her best friend and how happy she would be to hear that she entered a fantasy world as a magical girl. Sae defeats the witch alone, impressing Kyubey for her great strength. Sae thinks that with her new physical abilities she could do more strength work, but at that moment she runs into Hinano and Maria, discovering that they are also magical girls. Sae took advantage of the new opportunity that life had given her and managed to become friends again with Maria and Hinano, now as her magical girl seniors. Back in the present Sae feels bad that Hinano and Maria don't remember her best friend, who was also their friend, because of her wish. Hinano and Maria ask about the sad ending and Sae tells them what she read: the protagonist misses his family and returns home with them, but he did not realize that he loved the heroine, his colleague, until it was too late and they did not see each other again. Sae asks about the ending seen by Hinano and Maria, and they tell her that the protagonist manages to preserve and stay by the heroine's side. They found the story comical but charming and Hinano mentions that the protagonist was arrogant but was like a comic book hero. Maria thinks that Sae's best friend was maybe trying to say something by changing the story, so Hinano remembers how she said that she wanted to make others smile and show that effort could bring joy. Sae realizes that her friend's feelings did not disappear unlike her memories together and is happy about this. Hinano and Maria ask her if Sae misses her friend and she says yes. Sae thinks that there is no return, but both, Hinano and Maria, are very precious friends for her.

Etymology

  • The characters of her last name mean "paulownia tree" (桐) and "field" (野) respectively.
    • The first character, 桐, is commonly used to refer specifically to Paulownia tomentosa. The Paulownia tree is the mon (emblem) of the Japanese prime minister, and is used as the Government Seal of Japan used by Japan's cabinet and goverment. The character can also mean money, referring to the markings of paulownia on coins.
    • P. tomentosa, and the genus as a whole, are sometimes considered invasive species in and outside of Japan.
    • The genus was named after Anna Pavlovna (for which it is also called the "princess tree"), a queen consort of The Netherlands who upheld strict royal etiquette there, but never felt at home there, and identified more as a grand duchess than a queen.
    • An old aristocratic Chinese custom, which migrated to Japan and Korea, was to plant several paulownia trees at the birth of a daughter in a noble family. The tree would mature as she does, and by the time she was to be wed it would be cut down and carved into gifts for her.
    • Legends also claim that the Chinese phoenix, the Fenghuang (a symbol of the union of yin and yang), will only perch on the paulownia, and only when a good ruler is in power. This is why, in the Japanese card game hanafuda, the paulownia suit is directly associated with the Fenghuang card.
  • The characters of her first name mean "gossamer" (紗) and "branch" (枝) respectively.
    • It is a homonym with Sae (冴える), a verb steam meaning "be accomplished, have mastered".

Trivia

  • Her illustrator is Ragho no Erika, who also did the illustration for Riko Chiaki.
  • Her hairstyle and her greed towards money are similar to that of Nabiki Tendo from the anime Ranma 1/2.
  • Her Doppel's name, "Rukh", is an Arabic and Persian word for the rook chess piece, meaning "chariot".
    • The rook piece resembles a castle, suggesting the idea of wealth, being above others, and solitude. This theme is further represented by paper money being incorporated into the outer side of the Doppel's top and the veil covering its helmet.
    • Ironically, the chess piece shell that the main body of her Doppel emerges from is a pawn, not a rook. The Doppel's body itself appears to be a combination of different chess pieces, including wielding lances (knight), the upside-down head's chin resembling a knight helmet that may also resemble a mitre (knight and/or bishop), and the head, its crown, and the collar, ruff, supportasse, or throne back around its neck and behind it (queen).
      • In chess there exists the promotion rule, whereby when a pawn reaches the opposing player's end of the board (the eighth rank), the pawn's owner must replace it with a bishop, knight, rook, or queen. This could be a reference to Sae's wish.
