Isn't this opposite to ateji? Wikipedia says ateji is when you pick kanji for pronunciation instead of meaning, here it's the opposite. Looks more like gikun or jukujikun, unsure which (wikipedia:Kanji#Special_readings) EPF (talk) 18:48, 28 September 2026 (UTC)

In think in general people just call them ateji these days, regardless of meaning or pronunciation (especially in light novel context; they just group all these 超電磁砲(レールガン) weird readings as "ateji"). I don't know how strict we want to be with the terminology, gikun is probably more correct here, but ateji is more familiar. -- 0x99 (talk) 19:10, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
