"Dad can we go camping tonight?"
—Tatsuya, Madoka Magica Episode 11.
Tatsuya Kaname (鹿目 タツヤ Kaname Tatsuya) is a minor supporting character in Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
He is Madoka Kaname's younger brother.[3]
Appearance
In the Law of Cycles and Devil Homura universe, he wears an orange hoodie instead of a green one.
Personality and Traits
History

Tatsuya first appears in his mother's bedroom, sitting on a blanket she's under and trying to wake her up. Madoka then barges in, opening the window curtains and snatching the blanket off of their mom, successfully waking her up and making Tatsuya happy. During breakfast, Tatsuya tries to stab his fork into a cherry tomato but fails and it almost falls to the ground, but Junko catches it before it can. She gives him a kiss on the forehead before leaving for work.
After Mami Tomoe's death, another breakfast scene is shown. Junko cleanes up Tatsuya's face from food as Madoka starts to cry. Tatsuya asks why she is crying but she doesn't give a clear answer.
Because of extreme weather conditions, the Kaname family evacuates to a shelter. Tatsuya innocently asks his father if they can go camping, with his dad agreeing.

After Madoka makes her wish and rewrites the universe to never include her, Homura finds Tatsuya drawing on sand outside. He draws Madoka in her Magical Girl outfit, and writes her name. When he sees Homura he calls out "Madoka" (possibly recognizing Homura's ribbons as the ones Madoka wore). Homura compliments his drawing skills and he reaches for her ribbon, but he is grabbed by his father who scolds him, thinking he wanted to pull on Homura's hair. He happily repeats "Madoka" while in his father's arms. While he plays with his dad out on a grass field, his mother talks with Homura, believing that Madoka is an imaginary friend of his.
In Rebellion

At the beginning of the movie, everything plays out like the first episode of the original anime, Tatsuya tries to wake up his mom and fails, and then fails to poke his fork into a tomato.
It's eventually revealed the movie takes place in a Witch's barrier, and that Tatsuya and his parents were abducted from the real world. They return from the barrier unharmed, and at the end of the movie Tatsuya is shown settling into his new house in Mitakihara.

Etymology
Tatsuya's name is written in katakana, which has no particular meaning. As there are multiple possible kanji renderings, it's not possible to get any meaning out of it.
Trivia
- Tatsuya's voice actress, Kaori Mizuhashi, also voices Mami Tomoe and Walpurgisnacht.
Observations

- In episode 12, it is revealed that he still has some attachment to Madoka even though she was wiped from physical existence; it's possible he can see her or has residual memories of her.
- In the audio commentary for episode 12, Urobuchi explained that the reason Tatsuya knows about Madoka is because he can see her. He says it's how little children can see things they're not suppose to, because they don't know they're not suppose to see it. Sadly, Urobuchi also said when he grows up, he won't be able to anymore and will likely forget all about it.
