The original idea was to have a concluding story within the original series but through producer Iwakami and director Akiyuki Shinbo's enthusiastic support we decided we wanted something expandable as a world and concept. We wanted to make it have more breadth and be a bridge to the world view within the series and the franchise.
This strikes me as most interesting... we haven't heard anything like this before, have we? So... does this mean that the stories of any of the characters we've come to know and love will really not take up the foreground material of the movie? That there really won't be a so-called concluding element to the vague last several seconds of the series? (Not like I'm desperate for one, or anything-- it was pretty darn conclusive in most all other aspects!-- but this does seem to go against the expectations I originally held...)
