Side Story
Reinforce Zwei introduces herself to Rena and Kaede. She's a Unison Device that Hayate created. The two can fuse together in order to make Hayate's magic more powerful. Since she doesn't want to get in the way while the girls explore Mirrors, she heads back into Schwertkreuz to nap. Nanoha and Fate decide to head back to the Standby Zone with Momoko's trio, but Hayate isn't with them. As they decide to search for her, they hear her yelling from afar. The group rushes off and Reinforce Zwei is able to find Hayate, but there's five copies of her. Kaede explains the copies aren't always exact, and often their personalities don't match that of the original. The Hayate copies however, are standing there quietly rather than attacking them outright like some copies tend to do.
Rena suggests they talk to the copies since they're such good friends with Hayate and should be able to tell the difference. Nanoha apologizes to one of the Hayates for not being able to tell right away which is the real one. The Hayate she spoke to says she'll be "A-okay", prompting Fate and Nanoha to identify it as a fake right away. They defeat the copy and now only four remain. Kaede suggests quizzing the next copy and asks how she became a magical girl. The Hayate responds that she became one about a decade ago when the Tome of the Night Sky chose her as its next master. While Fate and Hayate both use the Midchildan system of magic which would classify them as mages, Hayate's book comes from a more ancient system of magic. Users of the ancient magics are called Mage Knights and even wear a knight's armor.
Sasara overhears them talking and joins the conversation, since she has a strong admiration of knights. Fate agrees with Hayate when she mentions that their General Signum would have liked Sasara. asara asks about the Guardians of the Night Sky. Hayate explains they are four guardians tasked with protecting the master of the Tome of the Night Sky. The guards serve Hayate well and Hayate in turn does her best to care for them by cooking their meals. The girls realize Mirrors must have had time to copy her memories as well, so they prompt Sasara to ask her more questions. Sasara asks about the other knights, and when Hayate mentions that their familiar Zafira usually takes the shape of a wolf, Nanoha knows this one must be an imposter as well. Zafira would never allow himself to be called a familiar, as he prefers the term Guardian Beast. The girls defeat the copy of Hayate and turn to the remaining three.
Nanoha feels bad having to grill Hayate like this, when one of the Hayate copies says they might all be copies from the get-go. Rena wonders if there isn't some special skill that only Hayate can pull off so they can figure out the real one faster. Reinforce Zwei pipes up and mentions Hayate's cooking. But there's no food or place to prepare food within the labyrinth. Sasara mentions that Mitama had packed several ingredients and cooking utensils in her bag, since she had apparently planned to prepare a spread of her own homemade cooking for lunch for everyone. Momoko and Rena are determined to stop Mitama from cooking. The Hayates agree to help and they all rush over to where Mitama is.
Mitama had attempted to make her special beef stew with the oven, stove and microwave she set up alongside a generator. The girls look to find a lump of charcoal at the bottom of the pot. They ask if she has any ingredients left which she does: eggs, butter, cream cheese, cookies, vanilla, cinnamon, mint leaves and some other bits. Wondering what this has to do with beef stew, Mitama says that's what makes it special. The Hayates note that they have everything they need to make a cheesecake and they can have it ready in half an hour if everyone pitches in. Since they can make a sweet dessert for everyone and figure out the fakes at the same time, the girls all agree and get started. Nanoha and Fate are regular pros in the kitchen since Nanoha's mom runs a cafe and Fate had learned from her own mother.
The Hayates have completed their no-bake cheesecakes, but there isn't a refrigerator big enough to chill them all. They discuss among themselves for a bit and then ask Reinforce Zwei to use her ice magic to chill the cheesecakes for them. One of the Hayates is amazed that Rein could do that, prompting the other two Hayates to call her out as a fake. The Momoko trio take out the copy, leaving only two Hayates left. However, both of the Hayates made delicious looking cheesecakes and had no difficulty baking them.
As they wait for the cheesecakes to finish cooling, they ask Rein to quiz the Hayates next. Rein asks them how many family members she has. One of the Hayates answers right away, listing all six members of her family, but the other Hayate remained quiet. A quiz doesn't really work unless both of them answer at once. Dismayed, the group is at a bit of an impasse when Mitama suggests they call a tea break and enjoy the cheesecakes the Hayates made. Just as they're about to gather together and eat, one of the Hayates grabs all the cheesecake she can in her arms and runs off at a high speed. Kaede yelps and everyone asks what happened. After clearing the remaining Hayate of suspicions, they all go off in search of the copy.
However, even Nanoha's Raising Heart isn't able to pick up any signs of the imposter. Fate uses up some of her magic to do a wide-range search within the labyrinth and is able to pinpoint the imposter's location. Hayate asks the Momoko trio to block any of the passages up ahead so she and her friends can catch the copy. Momoko agrees and is momentarily impressed with Hayate's leadership abilities. The copy runs off but is blocked at every turn by Momoko and her team. Finally, the copy spots an unblocked route and runs off. Hayate fuses with Reinforce Zwei and uses her ice magic to stop the copy dead in its tracks. Together, the girls defeat the final copy of Hayate and are able to recover the cheesecakes.
Back at the Standby Zone, all the magical girls enjoy the cheesecakes that Hayate made. Even Manaka is impressed with the cheesecakes. Hayate says she became good at cooking because she wanted to care for her guardians, who are a family to her. Before she met them, she lived all alone. Rena asks if the real Hayate was the one who answered the question about her family before, but it turns out it was the copy. The real Hayate says he would have answered six plus one, since there was once an original Reinforce who sacrificed herself for Hayate. Reinforce Zwei is more like the "little sister" of the original Reinforce. Reinforce Zweir says that answer is more correct than the copy's was.
