Side Story

Hinano Miyako reflects on her life. So many Magical Girls have met their end, yet she stubbornly continues to live on. Only God knows what fate awaits her in the future. Even if it is an unsightly one, she will keep fighting until the end.

Hinano runs a chemistry event for children with Emiri and Rika. She enjoys teaching science and wants to be like the tall, gorgeous woman in a white lab coat who first inspired her. Emiri and Rika tease her about looking young enough to wear kids' clothes. Hinano is 18 but feels far from her ideal self.

The next day, Hinano is at Emiri's Counseling Room. She stares at her phone, sighing. Emiri looks at her calendar and sees an X marked for today. Hinano refuses to explain and leaves.

Hinano goes to a memorial spot. Yachiyo is there. They reflect on an incident from two years ago. Hinano made a wish five years ago—"I don't want to die yet"—after a chemistry accident nearly killed her. That wish made her survive long enough to become a veteran.

Two years ago, Kamihama was divided between East and West. A powerful Witch appeared in a neutral area. East and West Magical Girls were tense. Kanae Yukino from the West kept entering the Labyrinth. She was reckless. Hinano confronted her and Yachiyo. They managed to de-escalate the situation.

Kanae went back into the Labyrinth and others followed. Hinano and Mifuyu went after them. Kanae was trying to save a kitten trapped by the Witch. Hinano called a ceasefire and they all worked together to rescue the kitten and defeat the Witch. Kanagi Izumi, a potential leader of the East, helped cover for them.

A few days later, Kanae died fighting a Witch. Hinano visited her memorial. Yachiyo was there. Hinano told Yachiyo that she had spoken to Kanae before she died. Kanae said she was scared of someone getting hurt because of her. She finally found a place where she belonged thanks to her friends and never wanted to make them sad. Hinano put an X on her calendar to remember the anniversary of Kanae's passing—the day she lost a friend she could not protect.

The next day, Hinano returns to Emiri's Counseling Room. Emiri and Rika joke about giving her a cuter nickname. Hinano is annoyed but treasures these peaceful moments with her friends. She resolves to keep surviving so their smiles never fade into tears.
