Suruga Kanbaru is a character from the Monogatari franchise, originally a light novel series by Nisio Isin. The series received an anime by Studio Shaft that was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, giving it a tangential connection to the Madoka Magica franchise.

The Monogatari series first crossed over with Madoka Magica as part of the "Madogatari" event. The crossover was limited to official merchandise and artwork.

In 2018, Suruga was made into a playable character in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record, as part of a Madogatari event.

Summary

A pioneer magical girl. One of the 'what if' forms... of the heroines of the Monogatari series if they became magical girls. She is fused with her motorbike after her transformation. Although she is the star who led Naoetsu High School's basketball club to the national tournament, she makes dangerous comments and actions frequently. Her wish was "I want to be faster than anyone".

Doppel Description

The Doppel of violence. Its form is a monkey’s paw. In contrast to her good-natured disposition, the master of this emotion keeps pitch-black feelings deep in the bottom of her heart. The negative emotions hidden behind its master’s openly-expressed desires are taken into account by this Doppel, and it attempts to grant those wishes through violent means. This Doppel emerges by way of its master’s soul temporarily yielding to her subconscious negativity; however, it is constantly attempting to catch her off guard in order to take control of her mind and body permanently. Should its master ever grow weary of this competition and be defeated by her negative emotions, she will most likely be reduced to one single devil, forever unable to return to human form.

Side Story

Suruga has no side story. The player is simply presented with battles and no story scenes inbetween.

Trivia

• When Suruga uses her doppel, it does not show her witch's name in runes. Rather, it displays the white kanji "袁", which is the kanji for 'long' (as in long clothing), However, "袁" is also the right half of the character for 'ape' (猿), much like how Nadeko's doppel name was the right half of the character for 'snake' (蛇) and Mayoi's doppel name was the right half of the character for 'snail' (蝸).
• Suruga's doppel is based off of a famous short story titled "The Monkey's Paw" by English author W. W. Jacobs. The story revolves around a mummified monkey's paw that has the power to grant three wishes. The wishes are granted but always with hellish consequences as punishment for tampering with fate.
• Her illustrator is Watanabe Akio.
• Should anyone overtake Suruga, she will instantly become a witch.
• Her motorcycle is a manifestation of her complex due to her inability to ride a bicycle.
