Could someone with access to the Japanese raws please add the kanji (or at least kana) for the city's name? ~ Celtic Minstrel (talk) 05:49, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Can't access raws, but JP wikis and resources seem to list it as "ホオズキ市" (hoozuki-shi), in katakana with "shi" (city) in kanji. EPF (talk) 10:43, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Huh… I never expected to see katakana. I was hoping for kanji so I could figure out the meaning of the name, but if there are no kanji available then that becomes quite a bit harder (and speculative)… ~ Celtic Minstrel (talk) 16:13, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
The only possible meanings I can find for ホオ are "cheeks" or "magnolia"… so maybe it's easier than I thought? If the ズキ is meant to be "moon", then "magnolia" seems to fit with that pretty well. Are there other possibilities for ズキ? ~ Celtic Minstrel (talk) 16:27, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Looks like I may have gotten the kana wrong. Moon would be ヅキ, I think? Though it's not normally written in katakana, but that's beside the point. Also, Wikipedia claims that the ヅ character (along with its corresponding hiragana) is uncommon, so maybe rendaku of ツ is normally written as ズ? Anyway… if it's スキ with rendaku rather than ツキ with rendaku, then other possible meanings I can see are "gap" or "like". To be honest though, the possible meaning of "moon" still seems the most sensible interpretation… ~ Celtic Minstrel (talk) 14:16, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
