Doppel Description

The Doppel of courtship. Its form is a tower. The master of this emotion once had love engraved within her, albeit tied to chains of grief. But after having carved part of herself away, she cannot directly feel it, and lives on with hollow freedom in a wide-open world. This Doppel is likewise unable to sense the love that it holds within. It devotedly seeks out those who will treat it with care, and upon finding someone whose magic or environment resembles its own, it captures them with its opened ribs and mercilessly attempts to squeeze them into itself. But no matter how hard this Doppel tries to incorporate its target, it can never fill itself with that which it seeks.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.
The story begins from Mifuyu Azusa's perspective; Ever since the arrival of Puella Care, she suspects its members to be up to no good. She first begins tailing Yozuru, currently tending to Puella Care's trailer. She then watches her take hold of a book and grinning to herself after reading the contents inside. From that reaction, Mifuyu concludes Yozuru is up to no good. After she takes her leave with the book in hand, Mifuyu closely follows. Yozuru first stops at Banbanzai; Tsuruno Yui's father recognizes her as a regular, and serves her breakfast. After eating, Yozuru gives her compliments to the chef, which seemingly moves him to tears. Confused at his reaction, Yozuru checks her book again, wondering if she'd done something wrong to make him cry. Meanwhile, Mifuyu believes Yozuru intentionally caused grief to Tsuruno's father, but then concludes her reaction as too bewildered to have done that on purpose. After Yozuru leaves, Mifuyu continues following her. Yozuru goes shopping, and gets positive reactions from all vendors around. Mifuyu first hypothesizes that Yozuru has the ability to manipulate people's feelings, but then dismisses that theory because she is a coordinator. Yozuru is then approached by a pharmacist's daughter, who asks her to play the piano. Yozuru complies, and her performance leaves a deep impression on everyone, confusing Mifuyu further as she begins thinking she is from some high class family. Yozuru then reunites with Livia Medeiros and Sudachi Sawa. After a brief discussion, Sudachi blows Mifuyu's cover by having Yozuru direct her attention to her. She first thinks about fleeing, but then decides to try the direct approach to getting to know Yozuru better, formally introducing herself after an apology. Yozuru believes she gave Mifuyu the impression of not being approachable, which Mifuyu denies. Livia decides leaving Yozuru be with Mifuyu so the two get to know each other better, but after a verbal pause between the two of them, Mifuyu immediately begins believing again they're plotting behind her back. Nonetheless, Mifuyu lets herself be guided around by Yozuru. Arriving at Puella Care's HQ, Yozuru serves Mifuyu coffee and cake, but Mifuyu immediately thinks both are poisoned, remembering Mitama Yakumo's horrible cooking. After constant hesitation about eating what she was offered, Yozuru takes it upon herself to taste-test the food for Mifuyu before she could even ask. Mifuyu decides to ultimately try it herself, and is amazed at the pleasant taste of it all. Mifuyu asks if such service isn't excessive for even a coordinator, but Yozuru replies she merely pours her hobbies into her work. However, Yozuru quickly switches back the topic and asks Mifuyu once more why she wanted to talk to her. Mifuyu asks about Puella Care, but specifically what it means to Yozuru. Yozuru replies that she feels free in this establishment, which makes Mifuyu recall her wish and express envy at Yozuru's feelings. Yozuru asks if Mifuyu has never known freedom, to which Mifuyu replies positively. Yozuru then asks how, and Mifuyu begins explaining her background, having been raised in a strict household in Mizuna Ward. Yozuru replies that their families are similar, despite her own family not being as ancient as Mifuyu's. She then explains the freest she ever felt is when she was able to grieve for her un-free self, which leaves Mifuyu confused. Before Yozuru can explain more, a customer comes in. The 'customers' reveal themselves to be members of Promised Blood, and label Mifuyu one of the Magius, to which she replies she's a member of the Kamihama Magia Union nowadays. They hold themselves back from assaulting Mifuyu since they're on neutral territory, but Mifuyu briefly sasses them, which ticks them off. However, before they can do anything, Yozuru attempts to intervene, but all she can do is make funny faces, which bewilders all three other girls, and saddens Yozuru. One of the PB girls forces the other to apologize to Yozuru, but the coordinator replies she should be the one apologizing. Mifuyu decides she's seen enough after the PB girls leave, and takes her leave as well, concluding that Yozuru is a very gentle person. Yozuru reunites with Livia and Sudachi later on, and they discuss the latest happening. Yozuru thinks she needs more training, as she'd tried to make jokes to defuse the situation, but failed to make even one. Livia insists Yozuru should continue trying to put Mifuyu's mind at ease, but Yozuru retorts that she lacks the kindness required to dispel her suspicion. Livia says that's why she's provided her with the book she carries around all the time, which she is thankful for. Livia explains that without kindness, you cannot understand the other party's feelings, which makes someone a poor coordinator. Sudachi's stomach rumbles. Yozuru picks up her book, and quickly makes the conclusion that stomach rumbling -> hungry -> but it's too early in the evening -> which means it's snack time. Yozuru decides preparing Sudachi and Livia a few sweets, Livia praising her for the good work. Yozuru then narrates that she lacks kindness because she wished it so. A flashback shows a younger Yozuru's life with her mother, describing her past self as "gentle, yet not free". She narrates she loved her mother, but for no particular reason other than she was her mother. A young Yozuru decides gifting her mother a picture drawing for her birthday, but she remembers her piano lesson the day after, then swimming classes, all of which her mother registered her to. On her mother's birthday, Yozuru says she has a surprise for her, but her mother guesses it's the past test's result. Yozuru shows her the portrait anyways, but her mother criticizes it - her lashes are shorter, and her nose is too high. Yozuru then shows her the test results, which severely disappoints her mother. She then guesses the picture drawing took priority over the test, to which the young Yozuru shamefully nods. Irate, she grabs Yozuru's drawing and rips it to pieces. She continues narrating more things about her mother, sprinkled with brief scenes of her past life; She's divorced and had raised Yozuru alone for a long time. Her job forced her to come home late at night, and Yozuru guesses she slotted her in that many activities so she never had time to realize the loneliness surrounding her. Sometimes, she would be gentle as they come, but sometimes, she would feel anxious, compare Yozuru to other children and turn strict. Such strictness even escalated to physical abuse, which managed to silence the young Yozuru at the time. However, she narrates that, when she reached teenagehood, she began talking back to her mother and standing up to this overexertion, beginning to make her own choices, shocking her mother. She was free from her grasp this way, but she would hear her mother lament every day about where she'd gone wrong. Later on, her mother was hit by a truck and died, but the road was so unobstructed such an incident should never have happened. Yozuru describes that moment as when she finally obtained her freedom for real, but whenever she thought about it, she could never stop crying. With the insurance counselor, Yozuru is given a large sum of money. The counselor deduces Yozuru's mother must have been only concerned for her well-being, and must have been a great parent. Yozuru prepares herself to move to her uncle's house, packing her things and sorting through her clothes and other things in the apartment - until she falls on a diary kept up by her mother, detailing everything about Yozuru from the moment of her birth until her teenage years. Yozuru, baffled by her discovery, is suddenly submerged by regret, believing herself to be a horrible daughter, and begins to blame herself for living. She begins planning her own suicide, when Kyubey appears. Kyubey offers Yozuru a contract. Yozuru asks if anything she wants can come true. Kyubey replies positively, even to the point of bringing someone back from the dead. Yozuru briefly ponders bringing her mother back to life, but says it won't change things. She then asks if, inversely, Kyubey can kill someone she hates, to which he nods. Yozuru then begins formulating her wish - to kill her... So that she continues on living. She formulated her wish this way because she believed her own end to be too easy of an escape route. As a result, Kyubey erased her guilt, 'killing' her kindness to allow her to live still. Back to the present, Livia praises Yozuru for her hard work, but reminds her that her inability to pick up emotions will make it more than a tough task for her to perfect her coordination skills. Yozuru says it's no problem, and her mother had trained her to face worse than that. She then declares that since her life was saved, she intends to keep on living to the fullest of her abilities.

Swimsuit

Livia is waiting at the beach for Yozuru so that they can get takoyaki together, but the latter is running behind. Just as Livia begins to worry about the line up, Yozuru arrives in her swimsuit, with the intention of dressing appropriately for the location. Yozuru also expresses that she tagged along because she wanted to use this opportunity to practice her social skills that Livia has been teaching her. Livia agrees to her objectives and goes to wait in line, which is when someone accidentally bumps into Yozuru. She turns around to see a girl who appeared to be in a hurry, and upon further inspection, her leg was bleeding a little. Yozuru recounts one of her notes;

“if you find someone who is injured, the kind thing to do would be to help them to the best of your ability”.

Yozuru decides to take her to a wash station to clean her injury, and picks up the now surprised girl before carrying her there bridal style. Just as they arrive, a male voice calls to them, initially mistaking Yozuru for a man. Two boys approach them, who the girl accuses for hitting on her nonstop. Yozuru acknowledges the situation and tells the girl to leave, but the boys quickly corner her. One of the boys claim to have suffered a fracture from bumping into the girl, and the other one says that she should pay for it.

Just as things are about to worsen, Yozuru brings up her note again, and with fractures being out of her ability, she decides to take the “injured” boy to the beach house, and call an ambulance. Yozuru’s strength shocks and frightens the boys as she carries the first one away bridal style as well. Before she can call emergency services, the boys announce that the “fracture” had magically healed, before running away. The girl thanks Yozuru for saving her life before leaving as well. Yozuru doesn’t fully understand the situation that was unfolding, but at least it’s over now, just as Livia finds her. Yozuru happily states that she learned that the bridal style works as a polite gesture for both men and women, and that she will do it more regularly from now on. Livia quickly tells her to backpedal on that idea, and says that she’ll have to teach her more when they get home. Yozuru vows that the next time she comes to this beach, she will show the true kindness that she would then have mastered.

Christmas Outfit

On the week before Christmas, Puella Care hosted a special event, where they dressed up and offered free coordinations. However, Emiri becomes envious, thinking that they are taking away her clients. Despite Akira’s efforts to calm her, Emiri challenges Yozuru to a hospitality showdown after their session. While Sudachi attends to Emiri, Yozuru is quickly finished with Akira, who tries to make conversation with her. Though starting out awkwardly, they begin to share their hobbies, and compliment each other’s festive outfits. However, Yozuru accidentally embarrasses Akira with her flattery remarks, and silently ends the conversation.

Powers and Abilities

Yozuru's abilities are tied to her unique condition and the wish that made her a magical girl. Unlike other magical girls who draw strength from their emotions, Yozuru is incapable of feeling them. This absence would normally render a magical girl powerless, but Yozuru continues to wield magic with the same efficiency. Despite this, there are hints that she might still have the capacity for emotions, as shown during her attack Rage Star Rondo, where she displays anger.

Her signature ability, Excision, allows Yozuru to "cut out" the emotions of her targets. This power is similar to how witches extract emotions from their victims. When "angered", Yozuru generates a dark aura as a visible manifestation of her rare emotional outbursts and she can also create four-pointed star-shaped flames to attack her enemies.

As a Coordinator, Yozuru can perform adjustments by touching a magical girl's soul gem to permanently alter them, strengthen them or to change aspects of their appearance, powers, or even their inner selves.

Etymology

The characters of her last name mean "bamboo grass" (篠) and "eye" (目) respectively.
Her first name is written in katakana. In her side story, it is explained with the kanji 夜鶴（"a crane of the night"）, a poetic parable referring to parent's love for their child. The original pronunciation of this idiom is Yakaku.

Trivia

Her wish cursed herself, resulting in the removal of what was causing Yozuru so much pain: her empathy. As a result, her personal attachments were killed, her emotional capacity severely reduced, and she has had to relearn how to connect and communicate with others.
Her doppel is named after Frau Gothel of the fairy tale Rapunzel, who kept a man's daughter locked in a tower in exchange for food from her garden.
- "Gothel" itself was actually an occupational title referring to someone who raises children, such as a midwife, Godparent, or foster parent.
- The doppel design also resembles the tower from Rapunzel
- The doppel is adorned with rampion bellflowers, from which Rapunzel was named after.
Her illustrator, Fujino Fuji, is also the artist of the Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story manga adaptation.
- Her doppel is not designed by the Inu Curry team, but by Fujino Fuji.
Likely an error, she wears her magical girl clothes while going shopping and eating at Banbanzai in her MSS.
Yozuru, along with the other coordinators, has a magician aesthetic. Yozuru specifically due to her ability to "cut" hearts, and the effects of her wish cutting out her empathy, similar to the magic trick of cutting a person in half. Her transformation also visually 'cuts' her in half multiple times.
