Summary
As an artificial magical girl born from magic, she contracted with her "real heart", becoming a "real human" and a "real magical girl". She has great magical power, to the point Kyubey called her an excellent catch. "Subaru" comes from her precious friends, the Pleiades Saints.
Doppel Description
The Doppel of hunger. Its form is a gourmet. The master of this emotion has become more relaxed and forward-looking, thanks to her existence being affirmed. This Doppel has become more relaxed along with her: no longer driven by pure greed towards food, it can sit back, chew that which it puts in its mouth, and enjoy the flavors fostered by the food’s ingredients. That being said, it’ll still cook anything it can get its hands on– Puella Magi, witches, or whatever else– and stuff the result into its body. But it’s become more refined than it was before, and no longer sprays bits of food in the vicinity. Its table is only set with one single plate for itself.

The story opens with Kazumi, Umika, and Kaoru arriving in Kamihama, eager to see their friends again now that Kazumi is truly human. They note how the city looks very different, with different shops and layouts, since the city has been through a huge disaster - but they find it inspiring that despite all the destruction wrought, people strive to rebuild and move forward. We cut over to Mikazuki Villa, where Tsuruno is cooking with Manaka, dubbing her "Manaka-sensei" (much to Manaka's chagrin, who begs Tsuruno to please "act normal"). We learn that they’re hosting a party for Kazumi, Umika, and Kaoru, which will involve everyone from the original Kazumi event and MGSes - first is a lunch with a bunch of girls, with Manaka leading the cooking, and afterwards, those who were unable to attend the lunch will take Kazumi and her friends on a tour of Kamihama. In the meantime, Tsuruno learns some new fancy cutting techniques from Manaka, and is determined to master them all in a flash; even though Manaka is skeptical, Yachiyo points out that Tsuruno is just determined to make things go perfectly for her friends, given that they’ve come all the way from Asunaro. Soon enough, the Kazumi three show up, ahead of schedule (the first thing people notice is Kazumi’s long, long hair); Tsuruno tells them to kick back and relax as they finish preparations, but with the wonderful smells wafting in the house, Kazumi is more eager to help them cook instead! Her kitchen prowess wows everyone present, even Manaka. While they apologize for putting Kazumi to work at her own party, she brushes it off; she genuinely loves cooking. In any case, they wrap things up just as soon as the guests finish arriving, so they all dig in, feasting on dishes like sirloin hamburgers, quail egg omelets, and lobster thermidor. Tsuruno is happy that Manaka was there to keep the dishes from being just plain average, to which Mitama says she would’ve been happy to help if only they’d asked! The topic shifts to Rena and Kanoko talking about Kazumi’s new hairdo, which eventually branches to her memory - Himika recalls that Kazumi had amnesia back when they’d first met, and asks if she’s recovered. After thinking on it, Kazumi decides to lie a bit and says yes, and she now lives as an ordinary middle schooler, going to school with her senpais Kaoru and Umika. They all finish lunch shortly afterwards, much to Kazumi's disappointment - she wanted to try out Tsuruno's Chinese dishes, too! Tsuruno says she didn’t deserve to come all this way just for a 50-point dish, but Kazumi insists she sincerely loves Tsuruno's food. And so the party makes Banbanzai their next stop, where Kazumi orders a whopping eleven servings of apricot-flavored tofu. Kazumi loves it, but Tsuruno says they're actually taking it off the menu soon - while it’s decent enough, it’s not wowing people enough to spur them to order it more than once. From what the girls have to say, it truly embodies a 50% score, which Tsuruno expects, but it still stings. This gets Manaka brainstorming - Banbanzai's food uses generous amounts of oil, which means patrons likely don't want to finish with something as rich as apricot syrup on tofu. Various ideas from the girls to fix things are shot down, until it's Kazumi's turn. Her specialty is in Italian cooking, so she comes up with making an apricot tofu tiramisu of sorts. Tsuruno puts it together real quick, and it's an immediate hit among the entire crew - it's refreshing and trendy, cheaper for Banbanzai to make, and delicious! It gets Manaka's seal of approval, which cheers up Tsuruno. She decides that while she had to rely on Manaka this time to be confident that her revised dish was good, she vows that next time, she'll be able to do so on her own two feet! And so Act 1 ends with Kazumi's voiced line, where she remarks on all the friends she’s made here in Kamihama, too - she's happy she came here. In Act 2, next on the agenda is Nanaka and her teammates taking Kazumi on a tour. Kako and her friends arrive at Banbanzai to pick up the Kazumi three, and we find out that Umika had actually reached out to Kako first for arranging this entire trip to Kamihama to begin with. In a flashback, we see Umika and Kako had run into each other after Umika had paid a visit to the Asunaro Museum of Contemporary Art, which hosted an exhibition of Alina's pieces, whose name seemed familiar somehow (Umika's review: the pieces are difficult to grasp, but there's a strong, undeniable theme of facing life and death). Kako happened to be in Asunaro because of her hobby of visiting antique bookstores in various cities. While they didn't have time to hang out just then, they both promised to meet up again soon - which leads us to now. Umika thanks Nanaka for helping her reunite with Kazumi from the first event way back when, and the tour shortly begins, with their first stop being the Natsume bookshop. Once there, they explore the various books on display - Kazumi gushes over a romcom manga, "Milky Way First Love," and wonders if Umika's books are on sale, too. They sure are - they have a whole section dedicated to her books alone, with Kako noting they're very popular among peers their age, selling out as quickly as they're stocked. She was even a special guest in a convention in France, Nanaka notes. Next up is Emiri's counseling room (of course, Emiri immediately freaks out over Kazumi's glorious mane as well), where they meet the rest of the girls involved in the Kazumi event, like Asuka, Sasara, and Natsuki, and they all go on a shopping trip together. Natsuki helps Kaoru pick out some goods, where we find that Kaoru has been scouted as a member of the U-18 Women's National Team of Japan, which makes the other girls ecstatic. Kaoru explains that at the time of the original Kazumi event, she was part of the U-15 team (for the junior high league), but now that she's in high school, she's in U-18. In any case, Kaoru is a bit flustered at all the attention, asking the other girls to just treat her no differently than before - which means Natsuki, of course, can root for Kaoru as she always has, and so she gives a hearty "Go! Fight! Win!" for the occasion. Basically, all this is to say - many things have changed for the Kazumi trio, but their friendships remain constant. Their next stop is the beachside park, where they visit the aquarium and watch the orca show; the Kamihama girls propose Minagi Land next, to visit the amusement park. Kazumi often goes to the theme park in Asunaro as well, along with Umika and Kaoru - she says Umika always screams her head off on the rides and haunted houses. After Umika gets her round of affectionate teasing, they all decide to visit a local teashop instead. The food and drinks there remind Kazumi of a certain shop she likes to visit in Asunaro, where the manager often spoils her, and which has recently gotten famous for its raspberry pie and bucket parfait - but Kazumi prefers the secret item not listed on the menu, strawberry risotto. That prompts the crew to want to try some now, so they decide to do some shopping and make it in Manaka's kitchen. To close the second act, Kazumi says she’s determined to make the best strawberry risotto ever! In Act 3, Kazumi decides to take care of the shopping on her own, except...she doesn't know where the shopping district is! Fortunately, Yukika shows up and asks if she needs any help, and helps give her directions before strolling off to the game center - and, of course, immediately plops right into a Witch's Labyrinth, and after griping a bit, she gets to work. Back to Kazumi, once in the right place, she bumps into Yachiyo and two other girls, who Yachiyo introduces as Nemu and Sakurako Hiiragi. After some introductions, Sakurako opens with a carpet bomb of questions, prompting Nemu to scold her gently about properly socializing with people. At this, Kazumi remarks it must be nice to have a sister, which confuses Sakurako, which confuses Kazumi in turn, especially when Sakurako busts out her classic "I'm a 0-year-old student in high school." Nemu quickly jumps into the conversation to set things straight, once she realizes that Kazumi is a magical girl as well. She explains that Sakurako is a magical being - not a magical girl, nor a regular human, but an artificial being. Nemu understands it's hard to accept that Sakurako is in fact "a zero-year-old created being," but Kazumi says it’s not the case at all - because up until recently, she was just the same way. Sakurako is instantly curious to meet someone like her, and while Nemu initially tries to change the topic, assuming it’s a touchy subject for Kazumi, Kazumi is more than happy to discuss it. She gives a crash course through her whole backstory, openly nothing that she's skipping a loooot of details in the retelling - once, Umika, Kaoru and their friends were friends with a girl named Michiru Kazusa, who Kazumi resembles exactly. Michiru witched out, however, and in their grief, her friends created clones of her, hoping to bring Michiru back to life. One of those clones is the Kazumi we all know and love. When she came to Kamihama, she was still an imperfect copy. Afterwards, a bunch of stuff happened, and in the end, she contracted with Kyubey to become a real human being. At this, Sakurako asks Kazumi why she wanted to become human. While Sakurako herself is interested in humans, she holds no desire to become one herself. Kazumi says in truth, she had no qualms with her clone body; she didn't know she wasn't even human, and no one else could tell the difference, either. In the end, however, that body, being sustained by magic, was unstable. She was running out of time and, at death’s door, she made her wish - because she still had more she wanted to accomplish, she still had friends she wanted to cherish, and wanted to help prevent her friends from falling into despair and becoming Witches themselves. For that, she needed to move forward on her own two feet, and that is why she became human. Sakurako still doesn't quite understand. Nemu tries to reframe it as a situation where Sakurako could, in theory, make a wish to become human in order to continue protecting Iroha and the Hospital Trio. Sakurako then supposes she would like to become human in that case, but it’s clear she still doesn’t quite grasp Kazumi’s motivation...so Kazumi declares that where words can’t communicate things, food can! We see how when Kazumi was Michiru, she often made strawberry risotto with her grandma. Her grandma's philosophy was, when in doubt and times are hard, consult with your stomach - hunger is proof that we, as humans, fundamentally want to live. Furthermore, for every meal, many lives and lots of labor go into getting that food onto our plate - we should strive to live up to what others have sacrificed. And food, too, is a source of hope and togetherness. Kazumi's cooking skills and her strawberry risotto recipe are things she's inherited from her predecessor; in her eyes, that recipe, passed down from generation to generation, is literal proof that hope transcends despair. So she proposes that Sakurako need only to take one bite of strawberry risotto, and she'll understand what it means to be human! There's just one fatal flaw with that plan, though - Sakurako doesn't feel hunger, nor does she eat. But before that gets Kazumi too bummed out, Sakurako says she wants to talk more with Kazumi - in her efforts to understand humanity, she wants to understand this curious subject better, about how eating can give people the strength to live. And so Kazumi proposes that she, Yachiyo and Nemu join them in their strawberry risotto party. She's convinced that when Sakurako sees everyone eating together and having a good time, she’ll better understand what humans are all about - Sakurako agrees and wants to help her shop and cook while she digests Kazumi’s words. Kazumi is all for it, and so we end the story with Kazumi and Sakurako becoming buddies, as the two beings who may be able to understand each other best. For her final voiced line, Kazumi says that she has a real heart - and that's why she was able to become a real magical girl. |
