"They may not all be good memories, you know. You may have a lot of memories... of things you would regret having done."
"That's okay too. I'd take those all together... and see what made me who I am."
— Niko Kanna and Kazumi, Kazumi Magica Chapter 7.
Kazumi Subaru (昴 かずみ Subaru Kazumi), known as just Kazumi (かずみ) throughout most of the story, is the titular and main character of Puella Magi Kazumi Magica: The innocent malice.
Kazumi is an amnesiac middle-school girl with long, black hair, and a noticeable ahoge.[3] She wakes up inside a large suitcase at the start of the story, having no recollection of her previous life, other than her name.[3]
Appearance
Her ahoge, apart from functioning as a pseudo-witch detector, also seems to respond to emotions: upon reuniting with Kaoru and Umika at the end of chapter 3, it's shaped like a heart.
Magical Girl
Her outfit, sporting dark clothes, a magical cross, and a large Witch hat, gives her a "cute Witch" look (She even has a black cat named Toto).
Personality and Traits

Kazumi is rather hotheaded, yet lighthearted, her mood is very unstable at times, and can swing between extremes in a couple of seconds. Still, she is cheerful most of the time. Her reactions are very spontaneous: while rediscovering her old life, she is often seen with a very surprised expression and her facial expressions are quite expressive themselves.[3]
She is somewhat ditzy, especially - but understandably so - in situations she is only now rediscovering; for example, forgetting her skirt while transforming.[4] Nonetheless, she is more than capable of rising up to the situation when it is required.
While getting reacquainted with her old life, she realizes she can't, or doesn't want to be, the "old" Kazumi. Instead, she decides to become a "new" Kazumi, starting with a new, and very sloppy, short haircut.[4] However, she keeps her ahoge, claiming - apparently correctly - that it is a Witch sensor and it usually changes with her mood.[4]
While she is only getting to know her friends again, she cares deeply for them. She goes to great lengths to protect them, to the point that she lost a battle with a Witch out of fear that her attack might hurt Kaoru, which almost happened in a previous battle.[5]
Besides her cooking skills, she is also quite the glutton.[3] Even after waking up naked in a briefcase after being kidnapped, her main concern is her empty stomach.[3] Her tastes are quite open, eating most things happily. When hungry, she can be messy while eating.[3] She also claims to be able to identify bad people from how they eat.[3] According to to an advice she once received from Umika, a bad guy never finishes anything: therefore, a bad guy will never finish his food.[3] Kazumi is particularly fond of Umika's cooking.[4]
Kazumi's earrings are very dear to her.[3] They were a gift, and touching them can trigger her rage.[3]
Powers and Abilities
Original

Her weapon of choice is a large cross-shaped staff.[3] She can use the cross as a melee weapon at close range, but it's most effectively used to fire magic beams from a distance.[3] Her attacks have a large range, enough to hit the target with pinpoint accuracy even when fired from outside a Witch's barrier.[5] Her final attack is "Limiti Esterni" (Outer Limit), a very powerful beam, larger than the cross' width.[4] The reason for these beams of light being so destructive is unknown but Juubey has suggested that 'destruction' is her natural form of magic.[6] She can fire multiple blasts in succession if she wishes to.[Citation needed] It can extend to great length and change into other weapons, such as a scythe and a sword.[Citation needed]
Her ahoge seems to have a mysterious ability to track down Pseudo-witches, apparently at a farther distance than a Soul Gem could.[4] However, it has no reaction to regular Witches.[5] This may suggest that Kazumi is able to sense things that normal Magical Girls aren't aware of. Though this ability may be because of her unique composition as she isn't exactly a normal Magical Girl and infact something else entirely.

She was able to transform a time bomb into a dud by concentrating.[3] The same kind of power is seen when she turns a Witch into a pseudo-Magical Girl.[7] It is unknown what kind of power this derives from. Juubey says her magic is "sacrilege" but then he quickly corrects himself and says it's "destruction".[6] In Japanese, both are the word "hakai", written in different characters.[6] This is completely removed in the official English translation.[6]
As she is a product of the other six Saints' magic, Kazumi has access to all of their abilities, including Umika's barrier, Kaoru's iron defense, Mirai's sword and Saki's thunderbolts and teleportation.[8] Her earring-bell rings when using these abilities[8], though due to their magic being embedded into her being by default, it could mean she can use several kinds of magic which isn't something possessed by most Magical Girls as they usually only retain one type of ability granted by their wish. As a result, Kazumi is something of a 'jack of all trades' and potentially quite powerful.
She can also absorb other materials to regenerate her injuries.[8] This ability has only been used on the remains of her fellow clones[8], and may be limited to them. She also possesses the ability to go into a 'berserker' state[9] or to alter her body into a 'Witch' like form when she gets too enraged or her 'Soul Gem' becomes black.[10] In this state, she has increased endurance to attacks and has the ability to generate claws that can attack her enemies quite severely.[7] She is also seen to possess fangs that she can bite her enemies with.[7] Her physical abilities have been strong enough in this state that they were enough to split someone's head open.[10]
In the Magia Record universe, when her Soul Gem turns black Kazumi is able to summon her Doppel, Carola - despite not being a traditional Magical Girl.[11] Carola has the ability to allow Kazumi to fly with a pair of newly generated wings on her back yet it also has a voracious appetite that can be sated by allowing Carola to attack enemies with a giant tongue that presumably consumes them.[11] Despite the doppel taking Kazumi's head and Carola acting independently of Kazumi's body, it leaves her unharmed when desummoned.[11]
After Wish
In the final chapter, Kazumi gains a new form and new abilities.[12] Simply by being near her, Umika and Kaoru's costumes are altered and their powers boosted.[12] She can create a path through the air using "Scala", and she uses a final attack that she calls "Meteora Finale".[12]
In the Magia Record universe, when her Soul Gem turns black Kazumi is able to summon her Doppel, Carola.[11]
History
In Kazumi Magica
Kazumi is a clone of Michiru Kazusa, who has turned into a Witch and died. The Pleiades Saints used their magic to create clones, prominently Umika, who figured it out after collecting information from Witches the group killed. Niko created the body for Kazumi, while Umika created the "heart" fueled by the power of Witches, called "Cuore Maleficus". The group then used their magic to create the clones, with Kazumi being the 13th clone of her. Originally the clones were given the same memories as Michiru, but all of them turned back into witches during battles. Shortly after she was created, Someone known as "Hyades" told Yuuri to kidnap and bring Kazumi to her.
Volume 1
One day, Kazumi woke up naked inside a briefcase, with no memory other than her name. She had been kidnapped and locked in there by an unknown party. While being carried, the briefcase she was locked in was accidentally switched with another man's briefcase, which was carrying a bomb.
When she woke up in the would-be-bomber's house she had a fit of anger, but ultimately calmed down when she found the man didn't kidnap her. After she ate a meal, the kidnapper called-the-would-be the bomber, whose name is Souichirou Tachibana, offering to exchange the bomb for Kazumi. Kazumi agreed to go along with it in order to find any clues about her past. At the mall, the police appears to arrest the bomber, but Kazumi jumps in his defense. She recollects a piece of advice once given to her and claims that someone who cleans his plate can't be a bad guy. Neither party backs down, and when explosion is imminent, Kazumi concentrates her mind on the bomb, attempting to make it stop somehow. Meanwhile, an unknown girl kicks the bomb to the ceiling, where it explodes harmlessly: it was a fake bomb, but it is implied it might have turned into a fake bomb by Kazumi's action.
The unknown girl, and a friend of hers, identify themselves as being Kaoru Maki and Umika Misaki, friends and roommates of Kazumi. They take her back to their house, where Kazumi quickly find her room and falls asleep. The other girls go out, and leave Kazumi a card warning her that the police detective from before will visit.
She takes the time until her arrival to reacquaint herself with cooking, preparing Strogonoff. Upon the detective's arrival, she offers her a dish. Kazumi then accuses the detective of setting up the entire incident with the bomb, and then coming to her house to kill Kazumi. This prompts the detective to break her plate in a fit of rage, therefore proving, according to Kazumi's rules, that she was a bad person. Infuriated, the detective attacks her, and transforms into a hideous praying mantis-like figure.
In the heat of the moment, Kazumi, much to her own surprise, reacts instinctively and dodges her attacks. She is eventually caught, but when the monster attempts to rip off her earrings, Kazumi suddenly has a series of flashbacks and she then kicks the monster away and transforms into a magical girl (again, to her own surprise). She then strikes back, finishing the fight with a powerful beam attack just as Umika and Kaoru - who had heard the battle over the phone - arrive.
Shortly after telling her friends she can use magic, Kazumi falls asleep from exhaustion and hunger. When she wakes up the next morning she attempts to transform, but all it does is cause a black cat to come inside. Going downstairs, she finds Umika making food and acting in a scary manner. Kaoru explains to Kazumi that Umika has writer's block, which causes her to act oddly. After eating, Umika takes them to the mall. During the trip Kazumi decides that she is different from the "old" Kazumi Umika and Kaoru know.
Suddenly, a strange feeling comes over Kazumi. Investigating an alley, she finds another monster attacking people. As her friends run up, Kazumi tells them to stay back as she transforms.
Kazumi is having trouble against the monsters, which prompts Umika and Kaoru to reveal themselves as Magical Girls. They incapacitate the monster, which causes Kazumi to remember how they used to fight together. However, trying to re-enact this memory causes her to accidentally fire a shot at Umika. Kaoru saves her in time, but the monster gets away. Kazumi feels horrible for almost hurting one of her friends, though they tell her she shouldn't feel bad. When she insists upon being punished, they take her to a hair salon.
As they cut Kazumi's hair, Umika and Kaoru explain magic to her. Magical girls are contracted by fairies (yousei) who grant wishes. Kazumi asks what her wish was, but she never told Umika or Kaoru. They then explain that Magical Girls have to fight witches, and that the monsters she fought previously were a new type of Witch. At this point, Kazumi's haircut is finished, and it's all messy. Kazumi says it's just fine for the "new" Kazumi. However, she rejects Umika and Kaoru's attempts to cut off her ahoge, as she calls it a Witch detector. The three of them then track down the Witch, a cosmetic saleswoman. During the battle, they briefly encounter a mysterious magical girl, who quickly flees.
They defeat the Witch, turning her back into a human. Kazumi mentions that those who become Witches aren't always bad people. Umika and Kaoru say that there is the possibility that anyone can turn into a Witch.
Some time later, Kazumi, Umika and Kaoru are fighting another Witch, but this one is dramatically different from the previous two, having the same properties as the Witches from the anime. During the fight, Kazumi hesitates, not wanting to hit her friends again. This allows the Witch devour her friends and escape. At this point four other magical girls appear: Saki Asami, Niko Kanna, Satomi Usagi, and Mirai Wakaba. They introduce themselves as the Pleiades Saints, and reveal that Kazumi, Umika, and Kaoru are members. Kazumi then gets a phone call from Umika and Kaoru, who are being protected by Umika's barrier. The Pleiades have five hours to find the Witch before Umika's barrier runs out. As they search for the Witch using their soul gems, Kazumi notices that her "Witch detector" ahoge isn't working.
When the Pleiades split up to search for the Witch, the mysterious Magical Girl from before disguises herself as Satomi and separates Kazumi from the others. She then reveals herself, which causes Kazumi to recognize her as the Magical Girl who locked her in the suitcase. In the resulting battle, Kazumi is incapacitated but is saved by the other Pleiades Saints, who realized they were tricked. The Magical Girl holds Kazumi at gunpoint, but Kazumi tells her teammates to attack anyway. The Magical Girl is driven away and Kazumi is unharmed.
Eventually, they finally track down the Witch (after Kazumi makes everyone a meal). Kazumi is told to wait outside the Witch's barrier while the other Magical Girls rescue Umika and Kaoru and then incapacitate the Witch. At a signal from a communicator, Kazumi will fire into the barrier, destroying the witch. Though the plan hits a snag when Niko's communicator is broken, they manage to give Kazumi the needed signal via candy flutes, which were a bag of candy that Kazumi brought with her for Umika and Kaoru. Kazumi fires her Limiti Esterni at the source of the sound, and, defeating the witch, reunites with Umika and Kaoru.
Volume 2
Kazumi is introduced to Juubey, the fairy that made the Pleiades into Magical Girls. Juubey cleans up their Soul Gems and then takes the Grief Seed from the recently-defeated Witch. However, it is then revealed that the previous two Witches Kazumi fought were actually "pseudo-witches", created by imitation Grief Seeds known as "Evil Nuts".
As Kazumi asks why Magical Girls aren't working together, the mysterious Magical Girl attacks, incapacitating the entire team. Introducing herself as Yuuri, the magical girl captures Kazumi, telling the others to meet her at Asunaro Dome at midnight. As she's being taken away, Kazumi asks Yuuri why she's doing all of this. Yuuri refuses to answer her. A small battle breaks out, causing Yuuri to flash back to another girl. Yuuri then ties Kazumi up.
When the Pleiades come to rescue her, Kazumi is tied to a chair on the other end of an impenetrable force-field. Yuuri then tells them that she will implant one of her Evil Nuts into Kazumi. Kazumi begs Yuuri to stop, telling her that they're comrades. Yuuri then laughs at her, hinting at some dark secret the Pleiades have. She takes off her hat, causing Umika to recognize her, announces she came back to get vengeance on the Pleiades, and shoves an Evil Nut into Kazumi's forehead.
However, the Evil Nut empowers Kazumi and lets her break out of the chair. Kazumi fights with Yuuri again, but is still overpowered. Yuuri claims that the other Pleiades had killed her, and says that they're a group that kills magical girls. She explains that she targeted Kazumi because she believes she was their most precious thing. At this point, Yuuri's blackened Soul Gem begins to crack and Juubey's fails to purify it. As it falls into Kazumi's hand, it turns into a grief Seed. In shock, Kazumi asks why Witches come out of Soul Gems as Yuuri transforms into a heart-shaped witch. Kazumi and the Pleiades Saints become trapped on crosses in the Witch's barrier. Vines begin surrounding the Pleiades causing them to scream out in pain.
At this point, the Witch shows to the magical girls a vision of her past as Airi Anri. The Witch then attacks Kazumi, seemingly crushing her head. In fact, the Evil Nut triggered a transformation in Kazumi, and she caught the attack with a row of sharp teeth. Biting that part of the Witch off, she attacks with elongated limbs and breaks free from the cross. Her earring bell rings, turning her back to normal. Kazumi says that she thinks Airi wasn't a bad a person and actually tries to use her magic to turn her back to normal. The result is horrific: Yuuri's body bursts from the Witch while still being merged with it. Speaking entirely in runes, she repeats the last spell she used on Kazumi.
At that point, the Witch is shot by Saki, which frees the other Saints. As they prepare to attack the Witch, Kazumi protests. Juubey appears and explains that nothing can change Yuuri back - the only thing they can do is kill her. Kazumi says she can't do it. Saki says she doesn't have to dirty her hands. One by one, the Pleiades attack the Witch as Kazumi begs them to stop. However, seeing that her friends are as pained by this as she is, she fires Limiti Esterni on the Witch, destroying it. As the Witch's barrier disappears, Kazumi picks up Yuuri's spoon, saying that she'll share this burden with her friends. She then collapses crying in Umika's arms.
Later, Kazumi tells Umika and Kaoru to walk home without her, wishing to be alone. As Kaoru protests, Kazumi stumbles across Souichirou Tachibana, the would-be-bomber from the first chapter. He has become the manager of a new restaurant, and he gives Kazumi a bucket of parfait. As she eats it, Kazumi has a vision of Yuuri and Airi eating the same meal. She asks Souichirou to put the parfait on the menu. He declines, saying it's not profitable. As she continues to eat, Kazumi again sees a vision of Yuuri and Airi and starts crying, wondering why they couldn't get a chance to eat the parfait. Finally, she falls asleep, still holding the spoon.
The next morning, Kazumi thanks Souichirou for breakfast and is overjoyed to see the parfait on the menu. She then leaves when she sees Niko and Juubey walking out of the store. After talking for a bit, they head for the amusement park. Kazumi says she understands that the Pleiades hid the truth about Witches from her so she wouldn't have any painful memories. Niko comments that Kazumi still doesn't have her memories back. Kazumi agrees, knowing that if Airi had erased her memories they would have come back. She asks Niko if there's any way to restore her lost memories. Niko tells Kazumi that she might have had plenty of regrets, but Kazumi says that all of it has made her what she is now, and she doesn't want to run away from her old self. Niko says they'll talk about it later as she suddenly confronts Ayase Souju.
Ayase introduces herself, and reveals she collects the soul gems of Magical Girls. She insinuates the Pleiades are doing the same thing, something Kazumi doesn't understand. She then reveals her intent to add Niko and Kazumi to her collection, prompting a fight between Ayase and Niko. Kazumi watches and asks Juubey how Niko was able to copy herself, prompting him to explain to her Niko's wish and powers. The battle culminates with Niko using a mysterious spell on Ayase. Ayase abruptly reverts back to her human form and her Soul Gem appears in Niko's hand. Kazumi asks Niko if she killed her, but Niko responds that Ayase is only stunned. Suddenly Ayase's body begins talking and hits Niko with an attack that leaves her flying and wounded. She then transforms into a different costume. Kazumi asks Juubey if a Magical Girl could transform twice, but it's revealed that the girl is actually Luca Souju, and she shares a body with Ayase.
Kazumi and Luca proceed to battle one another. Luca is able to freeze Kazumi, but as she touches Kazumi's bell it starts ringing, which frees Kazumi. She then punches Luca right in the Soul Gem. Luca then uses both her gems to be Ayase and Luca at the same time, revealing her ultimate attack Picchi Gemellati. After being knocked about a few times, Juubey and Niko come up with a plan to defeat the Soujus' attack. Juubey reveals that Kazumi's magic is "sacrilege", then corrects himself and says it's destruction. By combining it with Niko's magic of reconstruction, they can create an attack that can defeat the Soujus. After some fits and starts, Kazumi, Niko, and Juubey are victorious. However, the Soujus pull out a box of Evil Nuts and throws them at Kauzmi and Niko. Saki and the other Pleiades arrive just in time to save both of them. Kaoru says they'll be taking the Soujus' gems. Saki tells Kaoru not to do it in front of Kazumi, but Niko says Kazumi already saw her doing it. Kaoru pulls out both Ayase and Luca's gems with the spell Niko used earlier, Tocco del Male. Kazumi angrily asks the others why they're taking the soul gems of other magical girls, saying that she said earlier she would bear the burden with her friends. Against Saki's objections, Umika says she'll tell Kazumi the truth about the Pleiades Saints, but is interrupted by Niko's soul gem glowing. As she falls over, a Witch appears.
Volume 3
The Pleiades are shocked to discover Niko has become a Witch. Umika encases herself, Kazumi, and Satomi in a barrier. Mirai uses her attack 'La Bestia' causing an army of teddy-bears to appear, fuse and then kill the Witch.
Kazumi takes the hand of Niko's body and finds it's cold. As she shouts Niko's name, a voice says "You called?" Everyone is shocked to see another Niko standing behind them. As Kazumi asks what's going on, the other Niko walks up to the first Niko's body, puts her arm around her neck, and with a disturbing expression says "Switch". She then touches the hair of the body, and it's face suddenly vanishes. Juubey, a disturbing grin on his face, says that the body was Niko's "spare" and "compensation for Niko's contract".
The scene switches to Mirai's teddy bear museum, "Angelica Bears". Mirai says that in Japanese it's called "Ashitaba" (literally "tomorrow's leaf") and says that Kazumi came up with the name. As they walk inside, they step onto a magic circle. Umika holds out her ring, suddenly transporting them all somewhere else. Umika tells Kazumi that the museum was born from them meeting with her. The walk up to a giant door, which opens into a giant room filled with girls floating in tanks. The middle of the room contains a pile of soul gems. Umika explains that after they take soul gems, they put the empty shells of the magical girls into "the Freezer". Kazumi says that Ayase was right, and asks why they're doing this. Juubey says that it's their response to the Magical Girl system, which is full of contradictions: Rejection.
Umika, Kaoru and Juubey explain everything about Witches, and the purpose of the freezer, this being their "rejection" of the Magical Girl system. Kazumi asks when everyone found out about the connection between Magical Girls and Witches. Umika touches her forehead to Kazumi's, telling her to remember everything, showing her memories of how Michiru met them, making Kazumi believe that it was her.
Kazumi says she remembers hunting Magical Girls after Yuuri, but then suddenly falls over. The symbol for the evil nuts appears in her eyes. Satomi looks on in shock, as Kaoru says everyone's tired. Umika leads Kazumi out as Kaoru says they should rest for the day. Saki stays behind.
After Kazumi is back home Umika and Kaoru put her to bed. Saki comes to visit, soaking wet from the rain. After a short conversation Umika reveals that Saki isn't actually Saki, which prompts Satomi, who was controlling Saki using her magic, to kick Umika. After a short battle Saki runs to Kazumi's room and Satomi attempts to stab Kazumi, but Saki stops herself by stabbing herself in the leg. Satomi then changes her plans and tells Saki to bring Kazumi to her.

After Saki escapes with Kazumi, they are back in the freezer. Satomi greets Kazumi and tells her that she is going to kill her. Satomi then also reveals the truth about Kazumi to her: That Kazumi used to be a girl named Michiru Kazusa who has turned into a Witch. Satomi says she truly wishes to get Michiru back, but she is afraid to be with someone who is made from the flesh of Witches, after that the wall next to them breaks open, revealing 12 other clones, Satomi telling her that she is the 13th.
Volume 4
After that Satomi tells Kazumi what actually happened: One day Michiru turned into a witch, subsequently destroying the house they were in. Satomi then reveals that the previous clones were failures: having parts of Witches all over them. Satomi then commands all 13 clones to attack each other. Kazumi then finds out that due to being made out of others magic she is able to use their abilities too. During the bloodshed, Kazumi consumes the others to regenerate herself, leaving only two clones standing. The two fight and the 4th clones begs Kazumi to kill her. After that Satomi impales both of them with a staff and rejoices when they both fall down, presumably dead. She says that she killed Kazumi, seemingly happy with herself.
Kazumi then surprises her as she consumes the 4th Kazumi to regenerate. Satomi says that Witches are tough as her Soul Gem begins cracking. Kazumi tries to help her, but Satomi pushes her away, saying that Witches aren't allowed to touch her. Satomi then turns into a Witch and fights Kazumi. Kazumi begins turning back into a Witch and defeats Satomi's Witch. Saki then screams at Kazumi. After she regains her senses, she sees that she was beating Satomi's corpse into the wall. Kazumi breaks down, saying that she just killed her friend, but the remaining Saints tell her that's it's okay. Kazumi then begs them to tell her that what Satomi said wasn't true, but everyone don't deny her. This causes Kazumi to run away.

Kazumi is then found by Misako Ishijima, the police officer from before. Kazumi finds out that many girls have went missing these past months, including Airi Anri. Kazumi begins reading the logs, and finds out that many girls have been sent messages by someone named "Hyades". Misako asks Kazumi is she got sent messages by someone like that, but she says no. Remembering what happened today, Kazumi begins crying, leading to Misako driving to Souichirou's house. The two talk about Misako's classmate and friend Remi Shiina, being a Magical Girl and then disappearing, which fueled Misako's desire to help girls in need. Kazumi wakes up the other day to find that Kaoru came in and left Michiru's diary to her, with a letter telling her to run away.
Despite the warnings, Kazumi decides to confront her friends and tells them to meet her in the freezer, and threatens to release all of the Soul Gems they are stored in the freezer and let them turn into Witches. The girls come and Kazumi asks a few questions before changing herself to look like a Witch, telling them to kill her. Kaoru tries to stop her, but Kazumi hits her with a spell that knocked her out. During the fight Umika removes the spell and Kaoru tries to stop everyone from doing this, but Mirai comes in from behind and, while saying that Kazumi is in her way, slices her in half. Is is then revealed that the Kazumi they were fighting was nothing but a fake, revealing that Niko has grabbed Kazumi and put her into a container.
Volume 5
Niko inserts an evil nut into Saki's head, making her Witch out. Mirai confesses her love for Saki as the Witch bites off her head, killing her. She says that there are only 2 girls left to complete her revenge. Niko reveals herself to be Kanna Hijiri, the clone that was made as a result of Niko's wish. She was happy to hear that the Saints were making a clone of Michiru, as she isn't the only artificial Magical Girl anymore, but this also made her despise the entire group. Kazumi then protests to Kanna, saying that what she's doing isn't right. This causes Kanna to break down and attack the girls. The 3 Saints all have their Soul Gem turns dark while fighting and Juubey tries to clean them, but then breaks apart and dies.
Kazumi begins passing out, which prompts Saki's Witch to fight back. She attacks the other Witches and is killed by them, basically committing suicide. Umika and Kaoru take it as Saki's will and use her Grief Seed to clean Kazumi's Soul Gem. Kanna mocks the two girls, but Kazumi, who wakes up after having her Soul Gem cleaned tells her to shut up. She then transforms into a Magical Girl and attacks Kanna.

Kyubey, who appears after Umika's spell broke, proclaims that Umika and Kaoru will turn into Witches soon, which prompts Kazumi to look for a Grief Seed. She defeats Ayase and Luca's Witch form, which doesn't drop a Grief Seed. Kazumi runs back to the girls and begins crying, which makes Michiru's Grief Seed, hidden inside of Kazumi's earrings, to act up, being Michiru's will to save her friends. Kanna, in the last ditch effort, combines all of the witches into one, creating the Dawn of Hyades. Kazumi uses the Grief Seed to clean the Soul Gems and then decides to make a new contract with Kyubey to defeat Kanna and save everyone. She wishes to become a real person and is granted a new form. Her magic and gave her two friends upgraded powers. The three then attack the new Witch and defeat her. Kanna is seen with her soul gem about to break on top of a tower, but Kazumi walks up and cleans it. She explains that Niko never wished harm for you, she just wanted for her to have a happy life, which makes Kanna realize her mistakes. Kanna uses the last strength she had to jump off the roof of the tower and blow up her Soul Gem, dying.
An unknown time later, Kazumi is seen attending school, now known as Kazumi Subaru. Kyubey proclaims that a new Witch is born, so Kazumi runs out of the classroom and meets up with her two teammates as they set off to fight the Witch.

Kazumi shouts out an apology to Manaka Kurumi after she finishes eating her meal. Manaka asks her to keep her voice down as Kazumi explains that she only just remembered she lost her purse and has no way to pay for her meal. She had been wandering about, half-asleep with an empty stomach when she smelled the delicious food coming from the restaurant. She describes how delicious the food was to Manaka, who quickly begins beaming with pride and enthusiasm at her description of her cooking. Kazumi is even able to detect the dash of coffee that Manaka had added to the sauce for flavor. Manaka offers to lend her a phone to call a friend or family member for help, but Kazumi has no way of contacting her friends Kaoru and Umika. Kazumi recounts to Manaka how her and her friends were split up after fighting a particular tough Witch. But her hunger got the best of her and she ended up eating lunch at Walnut's instead of looking for her friends right away. She asks if Manaka will call the police on her for not paying, but Manaka is grateful for her honesty, as she "dined" but didn't "dash". Since she was so honest and praised the food so much, Manaka offers to put it on her tab and asks that she pay her back once she's able to. But Kazumi feels bad about leaving her like that, and while her friends are important, paying back Manaka was more important at this moment. She offers to wash dishes, sweep, clean, anything it takes to work off her debt. Manaka remembers her dad used to let students pay off their lunch tab by washing dishes and agrees to let Kazumi help out for about an hour to pay off her lunch bill. Kazumi washes dishes and busses tables for a while, though her mind starts to wander when she hears some customers talk about how delicious the rice omelet is. She also notices how warm and friendly the atmosphere and customers are and how hard Manaka works to make sure everyone enjoys their meal. Manaka is even ready with a vegetable juice for a customer who's really worn out from work. As the time goes by, Hinano Miyako enters the restaurant and asks for Manaka. She introduces herself and explains she's been having trouble coming up with experiments. Her friend Emiri Kisaki had suggested eating something delicious to cure her "writer's block" and tells her about Walnut's. Manaka isn't sure what she means by "cooking to inspire", but Kazumi remembers how her friend Umika would cure her writer's block and offers to cook a meal for Hinano. Manaka agrees so long as she gets to cook alongside Kazumi, but she has her doubts about the recipe that Kazumi wants to make. Still, she trusts her and together they serve a hot dog, noodle salad, and a slice of cake to Hinano. Kazumi says these foods are sure to inspire her and her experiments will be a "piece of cake" from now on. The two go back and forth over what to call her meal until Hinano eventually devours her meal. She's soon hit by a spark of inspiration and writes her ideas down on the back of her receipt. It seems this same meal did the trick for Umika too, and Kazumi was sure it would help Hinano. It wasn't the meal so much as the thought process while eating that helped. Manaka considers trying it out the next time she wants to come up with new recipes and thanks Kazumi for all her help. She urges her to go out and try to find her friends, and asks for their names just in case any of the customers know anything. Hinano overhears and recognizes Kaoru's name from when she overheard it earlier at the park. She writes the directions down for Kazumi who rushes off to find her friends. But when she got to the park, she wasn't able to find anyone. |

Doppel Description

The Doppel of hunger.
Its form is a gourmet.
The master of this emotion has become more relaxed and forward-looking, thanks to her existence being affirmed. This Doppel has become more relaxed along with her: no longer driven by pure greed towards food, it can sit back, chew that which it puts in its mouth, and enjoy the flavors fostered by the food’s ingredients. That being said, it’ll still cook anything it can get its hands on– Puella Magi, witches, or whatever else– and stuff the result into its body. But it’s become more refined than it was before, and no longer sprays bits of food in the vicinity. Its table is only set with one single plate for itself.

Side Story
| Kazumi Subaru's Side Story |

|
The story opens with Kazumi, Umika, and Kaoru arriving in Kamihama, eager to see their friends again now that Kazumi is truly human. They note how the city looks very different, with different shops and layouts, since the city has been through a huge disaster - but they find it inspiring that despite all the destruction wrought, people strive to rebuild and move forward. We cut over to Mikazuki Villa, where Tsuruno is cooking with Manaka, dubbing her "Manaka-sensei" (much to Manaka's chagrin, who begs Tsuruno to please "act normal"). We learn that they’re hosting a party for Kazumi, Umika, and Kaoru, which will involve everyone from the original Kazumi event and MGSes - first is a lunch with a bunch of girls, with Manaka leading the cooking, and afterwards, those who were unable to attend the lunch will take Kazumi and her friends on a tour of Kamihama. In the meantime, Tsuruno learns some new fancy cutting techniques from Manaka, and is determined to master them all in a flash; even though Manaka is skeptical, Yachiyo points out that Tsuruno is just determined to make things go perfectly for her friends, given that they’ve come all the way from Asunaro. Soon enough, the Kazumi three show up, ahead of schedule (the first thing people notice is Kazumi’s long, long hair); Tsuruno tells them to kick back and relax as they finish preparations, but with the wonderful smells wafting in the house, Kazumi is more eager to help them cook instead! Her kitchen prowess wows everyone present, even Manaka. While they apologize for putting Kazumi to work at her own party, she brushes it off; she genuinely loves cooking. In any case, they wrap things up just as soon as the guests finish arriving, so they all dig in, feasting on dishes like sirloin hamburgers, quail egg omelets, and lobster thermidor. Tsuruno is happy that Manaka was there to keep the dishes from being just plain average, to which Mitama says she would’ve been happy to help if only they’d asked! The topic shifts to Rena and Kanoko talking about Kazumi’s new hairdo, which eventually branches to her memory - Himika recalls that Kazumi had amnesia back when they’d first met, and asks if she’s recovered. After thinking on it, Kazumi decides to lie a bit and says yes, and she now lives as an ordinary middle schooler, going to school with her senpais Kaoru and Umika. They all finish lunch shortly afterwards, much to Kazumi's disappointment - she wanted to try out Tsuruno's Chinese dishes, too! Tsuruno says she didn’t deserve to come all this way just for a 50-point dish, but Kazumi insists she sincerely loves Tsuruno's food. And so the party makes Banbanzai their next stop, where Kazumi orders a whopping eleven servings of apricot-flavored tofu. Kazumi loves it, but Tsuruno says they're actually taking it off the menu soon - while it’s decent enough, it’s not wowing people enough to spur them to order it more than once. From what the girls have to say, it truly embodies a 50% score, which Tsuruno expects, but it still stings. This gets Manaka brainstorming - Banbanzai's food uses generous amounts of oil, which means patrons likely don't want to finish with something as rich as apricot syrup on tofu. Various ideas from the girls to fix things are shot down, until it's Kazumi's turn. Her specialty is in Italian cooking, so she comes up with making an apricot tofu tiramisu of sorts. Tsuruno puts it together real quick, and it's an immediate hit among the entire crew - it's refreshing and trendy, cheaper for Banbanzai to make, and delicious! It gets Manaka's seal of approval, which cheers up Tsuruno. She decides that while she had to rely on Manaka this time to be confident that her revised dish was good, she vows that next time, she'll be able to do so on her own two feet! And so Act 1 ends with Kazumi's voiced line, where she remarks on all the friends she’s made here in Kamihama, too - she's happy she came here. In Act 2, next on the agenda is Nanaka and her teammates taking Kazumi on a tour. Kako and her friends arrive at Banbanzai to pick up the Kazumi three, and we find out that Umika had actually reached out to Kako first for arranging this entire trip to Kamihama to begin with. In a flashback, we see Umika and Kako had run into each other after Umika had paid a visit to the Asunaro Museum of Contemporary Art, which hosted an exhibition of Alina's pieces, whose name seemed familiar somehow (Umika's review: the pieces are difficult to grasp, but there's a strong, undeniable theme of facing life and death). Kako happened to be in Asunaro because of her hobby of visiting antique bookstores in various cities. While they didn't have time to hang out just then, they both promised to meet up again soon - which leads us to now. Umika thanks Nanaka for helping her reunite with Kazumi from the first event way back when, and the tour shortly begins, with their first stop being the Natsume bookshop. Once there, they explore the various books on display - Kazumi gushes over a romcom manga, "Milky Way First Love," and wonders if Umika's books are on sale, too. They sure are - they have a whole section dedicated to her books alone, with Kako noting they're very popular among peers their age, selling out as quickly as they're stocked. She was even a special guest in a convention in France, Nanaka notes. Next up is Emiri's counseling room (of course, Emiri immediately freaks out over Kazumi's glorious mane as well), where they meet the rest of the girls involved in the Kazumi event, like Asuka, Sasara, and Natsuki, and they all go on a shopping trip together. Natsuki helps Kaoru pick out some goods, where we find that Kaoru has been scouted as a member of the U-18 Women's National Team of Japan, which makes the other girls ecstatic. Kaoru explains that at the time of the original Kazumi event, she was part of the U-15 team (for the junior high league), but now that she's in high school, she's in U-18. In any case, Kaoru is a bit flustered at all the attention, asking the other girls to just treat her no differently than before - which means Natsuki, of course, can root for Kaoru as she always has, and so she gives a hearty "Go! Fight! Win!" for the occasion. Basically, all this is to say - many things have changed for the Kazumi trio, but their friendships remain constant. Their next stop is the beachside park, where they visit the aquarium and watch the orca show; the Kamihama girls propose Minagi Land next, to visit the amusement park. Kazumi often goes to the theme park in Asunaro as well, along with Umika and Kaoru - she says Umika always screams her head off on the rides and haunted houses. After Umika gets her round of affectionate teasing, they all decide to visit a local teashop instead. The food and drinks there remind Kazumi of a certain shop she likes to visit in Asunaro, where the manager often spoils her, and which has recently gotten famous for its raspberry pie and bucket parfait - but Kazumi prefers the secret item not listed on the menu, strawberry risotto. That prompts the crew to want to try some now, so they decide to do some shopping and make it in Manaka's kitchen. To close the second act, Kazumi says she’s determined to make the best strawberry risotto ever! In Act 3, Kazumi decides to take care of the shopping on her own, except...she doesn't know where the shopping district is! Fortunately, Yukika shows up and asks if she needs any help, and helps give her directions before strolling off to the game center - and, of course, immediately plops right into a Witch's Labyrinth, and after griping a bit, she gets to work. Back to Kazumi, once in the right place, she bumps into Yachiyo and two other girls, who Yachiyo introduces as Nemu and Sakurako Hiiragi. After some introductions, Sakurako opens with a carpet bomb of questions, prompting Nemu to scold her gently about properly socializing with people. At this, Kazumi remarks it must be nice to have a sister, which confuses Sakurako, which confuses Kazumi in turn, especially when Sakurako busts out her classic "I'm a 0-year-old student in high school." Nemu quickly jumps into the conversation to set things straight, once she realizes that Kazumi is a magical girl as well. She explains that Sakurako is a magical being - not a magical girl, nor a regular human, but an artificial being. Nemu understands it's hard to accept that Sakurako is in fact "a zero-year-old created being," but Kazumi says it’s not the case at all - because up until recently, she was just the same way. Sakurako is instantly curious to meet someone like her, and while Nemu initially tries to change the topic, assuming it’s a touchy subject for Kazumi, Kazumi is more than happy to discuss it. She gives a crash course through her whole backstory, openly nothing that she's skipping a loooot of details in the retelling - once, Umika, Kaoru and their friends were friends with a girl named Michiru Kazusa, who Kazumi resembles exactly. Michiru witched out, however, and in their grief, her friends created clones of her, hoping to bring Michiru back to life. One of those clones is the Kazumi we all know and love. When she came to Kamihama, she was still an imperfect copy. Afterwards, a bunch of stuff happened, and in the end, she contracted with Kyubey to become a real human being. At this, Sakurako asks Kazumi why she wanted to become human. While Sakurako herself is interested in humans, she holds no desire to become one herself. Kazumi says in truth, she had no qualms with her clone body; she didn't know she wasn't even human, and no one else could tell the difference, either. In the end, however, that body, being sustained by magic, was unstable. She was running out of time and, at death’s door, she made her wish - because she still had more she wanted to accomplish, she still had friends she wanted to cherish, and wanted to help prevent her friends from falling into despair and becoming Witches themselves. For that, she needed to move forward on her own two feet, and that is why she became human. Sakurako still doesn't quite understand. Nemu tries to reframe it as a situation where Sakurako could, in theory, make a wish to become human in order to continue protecting Iroha and the Hospital Trio. Sakurako then supposes she would like to become human in that case, but it’s clear she still doesn’t quite grasp Kazumi’s motivation...so Kazumi declares that where words can’t communicate things, food can! We see how when Kazumi was Michiru, she often made strawberry risotto with her grandma. Her grandma's philosophy was, when in doubt and times are hard, consult with your stomach - hunger is proof that we, as humans, fundamentally want to live. Furthermore, for every meal, many lives and lots of labor go into getting that food onto our plate - we should strive to live up to what others have sacrificed. And food, too, is a source of hope and togetherness. Kazumi's cooking skills and her strawberry risotto recipe are things she's inherited from her predecessor; in her eyes, that recipe, passed down from generation to generation, is literal proof that hope transcends despair. So she proposes that Sakurako need only to take one bite of strawberry risotto, and she'll understand what it means to be human! There's just one fatal flaw with that plan, though - Sakurako doesn't feel hunger, nor does she eat. But before that gets Kazumi too bummed out, Sakurako says she wants to talk more with Kazumi - in her efforts to understand humanity, she wants to understand this curious subject better, about how eating can give people the strength to live. And so Kazumi proposes that she, Yachiyo and Nemu join them in their strawberry risotto party. She's convinced that when Sakurako sees everyone eating together and having a good time, she’ll better understand what humans are all about - Sakurako agrees and wants to help her shop and cook while she digests Kazumi’s words. Kazumi is all for it, and so we end the story with Kazumi and Sakurako becoming buddies, as the two beings who may be able to understand each other best. For her final voiced line, Kazumi says that she has a real heart - and that's why she was able to become a real magical girl. |

Trivia
- "Limiti Esterni" is Italian for "Outer Limit", and since several names in Kazumi Magica are references to American live-action shows of past, this is a reference to The Outer Limits.
- In Magia Record:
- Along with Kaoru Maki, Kazumi is the first event-limited girl in Magia Record that must be obtained from the gacha when she is available.
- Her design is displayed inconsistently throughout the game. Her transformation animation uses her preliminary design, with her pom-poms replaced by Roman numerals signifying her status as the 13th clone of Michiru and lacks her cape, as well as a modified, more modest top. Meanwhile, her four-star card depicts her with long hair, but there's nowhere in the game she's long-haired.
- According to Archive Volume 2, her Doppel "Carola" is named after the Italian version of Sleeping Beauty by Italo Calvino titled "The Sleeping Beauty and her Children". In it, Calvino retains the element that the woman who tries to kill the children is the king's mother, not his wife, but adds that she does not want to eat them herself, and instead serves them to the king.
- It was initially planned to bear Kazumi's original name (Michiru Kasuza).
- It also notes that it's based on the figure Humpty Dumpty. In the nursery rhyme, it sits on the wall, hence the wall-like structure that makes up the main body of her Doppel. In the same rhyme, Humpty Dumpty falls off the wall and cracks, which the Doppel uses to attack its victims by grabbing them with its tongue, and the recoil will cause them to crack.
- The book also states that the (Black Cook) Witch would've had various kitchen utensils as its Familiars, and their role is to cook.
Observations
- Her outfit, sporting dark, suggestive clothes, a magical cross, and a large witch hat, gives her a "cute witch" look. Given that the same name is used for the creatures they are fighting, this gave birth to a number of theories.
- She even has a black cat named Toto.
- Apart from functioning as a pseudo-witch detector, her ahoge also seems to respond to emotions: upon reuniting with Kaoru and Umika at the end of chapter 3, it's shaped like a heart.
- Kazumi's personal magic circle has pointed spokes resembling grief seeds, which may be a nod toward her true nature as a witch.
Etymology
- One of the possible kanji spellings of Kazumi's name is 一三, literally the numbers "one-three". It is most likely a reference to the current Kazumi being the 13th clone of Michiru, as well as this fact being revealed in the 13th chapter of the manga. While thirteen is a very common unlucky number, one and three also make four, which is an Asian unlucky number.
- 昴 "Subaru" means "Pleiades".
