The Magical Girl Records are a collection of books that serve as conscious archives for the souls, memories, and experiences of Magical Girls throughout history. This system functions as a core project of the inhabitants of the Magia Record in a direct effort to counteract the inherent tragedy of the Magical Girl system by ensuring no girl's story is ever truly forgotten.

Overview

They are created and stored within the Magia Record by Iroha Tamaki with the purpose of preserving the hopes and legacy of all deceased Magical Girls across the past and present.

Unlike Interview Records, the Magical Girl Records hold magical constructs containing the personality, memories, knowledge, and emotional essence of a specific Magical Girl. While this allows the Records to be "conscious" to some extent, the books can also simply be read through, especially when they're incomplete.

Kagome's unique magic allows her to mentally enter a Magical Girl Record and converse directly with its consciousness. She demonstrated this ability with the Record of Mikoto Sena, which had been closed to protect Mikoto's secrets, making Kagome have to force her way inside. Even from within, Kagome found the Record was bound to its original's will, and though it could not lie, it also could not be forced to give answers, prioritizing the real Mikoto's wishes above all. Additionally, the Record had the appearance of Mikoto herself, but it nonchalantly recognized itself as simply a construct, and not the original Mikoto.

The process of creating a Record is done personally by Infinite Iroha and Nemu Hiiragi through the power of Uwasa, and they're able to use the powers of the Endless Mirrors to travel back to the past, and create Records of Magical Girls long gone. During Puella Historia, Nemu also made multiple specialized Records of her own self to guide the girls of Kamihama while they were going back in time.

Trivia

  • The Records are materialized into the form of books. This is a consistent motif across the Puella Magi universe, notably used by both Ultimate Madoka, who archives ended timelines as books, and Kagome with her Interview Records.
  • Based on their backup plan with the Interview Records, as well as their entries in the Puella Magi Diarium, it can be surmised that Touka and Nemu plan to use Magical Girl Records to create Uwasa bodies for deceased Magical Girls, essentially bringing them back to life.
