Summary

A magical girl who gently watches over Suzune, Matsuri, and Kagari. As an orphan whose parents were killed by a Witch, she moved from place to place, relying on her relatives. Her polite tone and demeanor were instilled in her at the kendo school where she first took refuge after the death of her parents. Her age is a secret.

Doppel Description

Carmen, Tsubaki's doppel

The Doppel of avengement. Its form is a shrine gate. The master of this emotion is haunted by memories of her revenge in the form of nightmares to this day. This Doppel loathes the sworn enemy that drove its master’s fate off course and stole her loved ones from her, to an even greater extent than its master herself. Thus, it repeatedly shows past memories to her, pushing her to re-enact her revenge. Each time she enacts revenge, however, her enemy’s form is obscured by clouds and fades away, thereafter tormenting her as a mere nightmare and burning further feelings of loathing into her.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

Tsubaki moved to Kamihama City with Suzune Amano, Matsuri Hinata and Kagari Hinata for personal reasons. She insists on taking them to Chuo Academy because it's their first day, but the three girls refuse and suggest to Tsubaki that she better start unpacking. Tsubaki feels a bit lonely, but she starts cleaning and unpacking her stuff, and when she's done, Suzune returns. Tsubaki asks about Matsuri and Kagari, to which Suzune replies that they went to see club activities. Tsubaki asks Suzune why she didn't go with them, to which she replies that she isn't interested in joining a club. Tsubaki senses that something is bothering Suzune, and she says that they are going to practice kendo in her class, and she needs to buy her own practice swords, as well as bring money to receive her own Shinai in class. Tsubaki agrees to give Suzune the money, but she doesn't feel so comfortable borrowing money from her, plus she always feeds her, buys her clothes, and sends her to school, even though she isn't a relative of hers. Tsubaki insists that she wants to get a part-time job now that she's in high school and is thinking about delivering newspapers, so Tsubaki deduces that therefore Suzune isn't interested in visiting any clubs.

Tsubaki wants to tell her that it's not necessary, but she felt the same way in the past, so she proposes to Suzune that they have some tea together because she wants to tell Suzune about her past. Tsubaki remembers Suzune's situation and how she adopted her after her parents died and reveals to Suzune that she too lost her parents to a witch when she was just a teenager about the age Suzune, and the girls are. Hinata twins. Tsubaki tells Suzune how her parents were killed during a witch singing lullabies that set them on fire. Suzune is surprised that Tsubaki never told her that story but reveals that she was saved by magical girls slightly older than her, but the witch escaped from her. Tsubaki admits that the reason she took Suzune is because she saw herself reflected in her, besides that unlike her, Tsubaki did have people who could take care of her when she became an orphan. Suzune asks if Tsubaki was also adopted by a magical girl, but Tsubaki denies this, instead she was adopted by a distant relative of hers (possibly a distant cousin of hers) who lived in a Town called Sazanka Town. Tsubaki reveals that, although she did not know her, she taught her much of what she knows today, and that it was thanks to her teaching that she thought she wanted to protect from Suzune. Suzune asks about her and Tsubaki tells her that her familiar was called Yoriko Yanagi, and that she adopted her just when she started her first year of high school and that she was approximately a little over a decade older than her, overseeing the dojo of Kendo from his family. Tsubaki remembers how Yoriko apologized for her parents and promised Tsubaki that she would raise her as if she were her daughter. Tsubaki admits that Yoriko was rather gruff or rather "sisterly" and at first, she felt that Yoriko was too friendly towards her and didn't know how to be respectful. Suzune says she can't imagine Tsubaki like this and she laughs saying that Yoriko was a brusque person, but as a Kendo instructor she was somewhat strict in certain behaviors, especially when she asked her to teach her Kendo, remembering how Yoriko asked her to call her sensei and was more respectful when they trained, being from that moment when Tsubaki began to change.

Suzune questions why Tsubaki started practicing kendo. Tsubaki reveals that she had already made her contract with Kyubey, and she believed that it would help her fight the witches better. However, Yoriko not only helped her improve physically but also spiritually, because she wouldn't be who she is if she didn't belong to her thanks to her. Suzune asks if she has a photo of Yoriko, and Tsubaki says she does and reveals that she has one of her and her childhood friend Ichika Kasumi, who also trained kendo with Yoriko, revealing that Ichika was also a magical girl and the two hunted. witches together being partners as well as rivals. Tsubaki realizes that her photos are still stored, and she must unpack them, but Suzune doesn't urge her to do that, but she asks about Yoriko because she has never heard of her contacting Tsubaki. Tsubaki becomes sad and she remembers the day Yoriko followed them. Yoriko tells Suzune that Yoriko is dead and Suzune apologizes, while Tsubaki thinks that Yoriko was also killed by a witch, the same one who killed her parents. That day, Tsubaki had found the witch who killed her parents, but Yoriko inadvertently followed her into the witch's labyrinth. Tsubaki laments that she hadn't adjusted her emotions yet and she wasn't able to see Yoriko as her mother, but she still cared for her as if she were. Tsubaki thinks that she now understands that feeling, and that if she had been a normal human would also follow Suzune if he had seen her enter a witch's barrier.

Tsubaki remembers Yoriko's last words “I know… the condition of my body… Tsubaki… our year together… was short, but… it was fun…”. Tsubaki reveals that Ichika was with her as well, but they were both so busy defeating the witch that they didn't realize Yoriko was there. Tsubaki thinks that if she had had the experience that she now has she could have saved her adoptive mother, but Tsubaki's thoughts are interrupted by Suzune. Tsubaki reveals to Suzune that her bell amulet was Yoriko's, which was retrieved from her body by Ichika and given to Tsubaki. Tsubaki tells Suzune that it was Yoriko who taught her the "always be together" spell. Suzune is sad, but Tsubaki asks her not to be, because, although it was painful to lose Yoriko too and she still has some regrets, other relatives continued to care for her when Yoriko died, so she had many adults who helped her to become the adult she is today and so she tells Suzune that it's okay for her to depend on her. Suzune doesn't know how to feel, but Tsubaki tells her that children can be taken care of by adults without them having to worry about difficult things. Suzune insists that she's not a girl anymore, though Tsubaki insists that she still is to her. Tsubaki says that it's fine if Suzune wants to get a part-time job, but she asks why she's not looking to join a school club and then when she's an adult she'll think about working.

Suzune says that she understands Tsubaki's position and would probably say the same if they switched roles and Tsubaki says the same. So Tsubaki proposes that she and Suzune practice tendo together because she hasn't wielded a shinai sword in a while, but Suzune says that Tsubaki is just avoiding the argument problem, but Tsubaki says it's because adults are unfair. Suzune agrees to practice with Tsubaki and thanks her. Tsubaki thinks that she still has the Shinai from her when she practiced tendo in middle school. Later, Matsuri enrolls in Tsubaki's tendo classes, but Kagari declines the offer. On the day of the training Matsuri introduces Kokoro Awane to Tsubaki, saying that she is a magical girl from Kamihama who attends Chuo Academy and who helped her and Kagari when she ran into a witch on her first day of school. Tsubaki thanks Kokoro for protecting the Hinata twins, and Matsuri reveals that the witches in Kamihama City are stronger than the ones in Hozuki City. Suzune also thanks Kokoro, but Matsuri says that two other magical girls who accompanied Kokoro, named Masara Kagami and Aimi Eri, also helped them. Kokoro explains that they are high school students, so they are still in class, but when they finish, they will go to meet Tsubaki because they are interested in her tendo class. Tsubaki is happy that Matsuri was able to make friends quickly while Suzune says that she was surprised that Matsuri asked her to attend the tendo class as well. Tsubaki proceeds to teach the basics of tendo, which she always begins and ends with a bow to the opponent, as well as respect. Matsuri calls Tsubaki sensei, and she is surprised and asks him to call her as usual. After finishing the training Tsubaki is surprised at how good she is still and says that she probably went through all the training she received from Yoriko at Matsuri's age.

Kokoro is surprised that Tsubaki is a veteran because her spirit is totally different from theirs, and when Tsubaki asks what's wrong, Matsuri says that she's never heard her yell so loud, and Suzune agrees because she didn't yell like that when fighting witches either. Tsubaki says that shouting is important in tendo and Kokoro mentions that it's true because it's the first thing they are taught in tendo classes at Chuo Academy, but they only practice the basics and hardly ever have fights. Tsubaki proposes that they do light training, to avoid getting hurt. Suzune later asks Tsubaki if any of her tendo training helped her in fighting witches, while Matsuri and Kokoro are also curious about this, as Matsuri reassures Kokoro that Tsubaki is a powerful magical girl. Tsubaki says that her main practice of kendo is reading her opponent's movements and preventing them from reading your thoughts as you move. Matsuri asks if witches have minds, and although Tsubaki isn't sure about it, trying to turn your mind into movement allows you to not understand your own movements. Suzune says that she understands how it can be applied, but Tsubaki insists that it is more difficult than it sounds, since you must be at the level of your opponent but maintain control over your mind. Matsuri says it sounds difficult and Tsubaki says it's because they don't learn overnight.

The girls train and each time Suzune defeats Matsuri, who says that Suzune is very strong, but she retorts that she wins because Matsuri's moves are easy to read, especially on her face. Matsuri is shocked by this and insists on having another duel. Kokoro for her part tells Tsubaki that Suzune and Matsuri really seem to be very close, and Tsubaki thinks that the two of them remind her and her childhood friend Ichika of hers. Kokoro questions how close they were and Tsubaki recalls her first meeting with Ichika and as she told her that she would defeat her, even though Tsubaki didn't recognize her at first, Ichika pointed out that they both take classes at the same dojo. Tsubaki admits that she was so engrossed in her training that she didn't pay attention to her classmates, but eventually she and Ichika became rivals and friends.

Kokoro asks if Suzune and Matsuri were like the two of them, but Tsubaki says that more in relationship because they are different in personality, because unlike Suzune and Matsuri, she and Ichika didn't start out having respect for each other, but eventually they started to like each other. accept each other even if they fought all the time. However, Tsubaki hopes that Suzune, Matsuri, and Kagari can be best friends who can improve each other, like she and Ichika did, but Tsubaki asks Kokoro not to tell them because she's embarrassed. When Matsuri asks to change her opponent, they all feel the presence of a witch and cancel the training to face the witch. The girls arrive at a nearby building where they see a woman with a witch's kiss about to commit suicide. They all transform and try to stop the woman from jumping, who she says that she is not suitable to be a mother. Tsubaki asks what she's talking about, and the woman says that she adopted a girl who just lost her parents, but she doesn't accept her as her mother at all and says that the girl disappeared in front of her eyes and it's all her fault.

Tsubaki deduces that the girl entered the witch's barrier by accident, and she remembers how she once told Yoriko that she was not her mother. Tsubaki tells the woman that what she says about not being fit to be a mother is not true and knocks her out. Tsubaki tells Matsuri about the woman's daughter and asks Kokoro to take care of the woman while she, Suzune, and Matsuri go in to rescue the girl. Tsubaki thinks that even though family matters are complicated, that's what makes family precious. Tsubaki, Suzune, and Matsuri confront the witch's familiars, but since they are so powerful, Tsubaki wonders if she should have asked Kokoro for help. At that moment, Kagari appears at the barrier saying that she felt the presence of a witch when she passed near her, and she went into a fight deducing that they must be there too. They all find the witch who captured the girl, so Suzune, Matsuri, and Kagari offer to distract the witch while Tsubaki rescues the girl. Tsubaki agrees but she tells the three girls to be careful. As the girls distract the witch, Tsubaki takes the girl and saves her from her, saying that she can now return to her house. However, the girl says that she can't go back home because she said horrible things to her adoptive mother, and it makes her happy to be with her, but she got mad at her and told her that she wasn't her real mother. Tsubaki assures her that this woman wants to be with her no matter what happens to her, so Tsubaki remembers Yoriko again and calls her “mother”. Then Tsubaki sets out to kill the witch to get the girl out of the trance.

Tsubaki then watches as the witch proceeds to harm Suzune, Matsuri, and Kagari, but the witch proceeds to try to attack the girl, but Tsubaki takes the hit for her. Tsubaki notes that the three girls are not as hurt as she is but seeing that the witch is going to attack Suzune she gets in her way and reminds Suzune to never let down her opponent's guard. Tsubaki proceeds to block the witch's attacks and realizes that she is trying to go for the girl and when she thinks of sacrificing herself to save the girl Matsuri and Kagari manage to block the witch's next attacks together. Matsuri says that she told Kagari about what Tsubaki taught her about reading her opponent's moves, so Kagari also wants Tsubaki to teach her that as well, while Suzune joins the attack on the witch. Tsubaki thinks that the three girls have already learned and don't need her to protect them, and she realizes that the more she thinks about taking care of someone else she loses sight of them. Tsubaki thinks that she still must change her way of thinking and remembers how she asked Kyubey as a wish "to have the power to defeat that witch" who killed her parents, but since she was not attentive to her surroundings and was only focused on kill the witch to fulfill her revenge, which led to the witch killing Yoriko in the same way as her parents.

Tsubaki chides herself for how her greatest enemy is her own impatience that blurs his vision and limits his movements, and remembering Yoriko's words about the importance of mental strength and balanced body to develop true strength in the tendo, Tsubaki he asks Suzune and the Hinata twins to take care of the girl and keep their distance because it will require all his concentration to fight the witch and he needs to avoid distractions. The girls agree and leave the barrier with the girl at the request of Tsubaki, who manages to block the witch's attacks and finally eliminates her. Tsubaki is glad to see everyone safe, but when Matsuri compliments her on her strength, Tsubaki says that she still has a lot to learn and that it's easy to get distracted in times of worrying about her loved ones. Tsubaki reunites mother and daughter after having given them the confidence to know that one needed the other, the mother thanks Tsubaki while the girl tells her that when she gains more courage and confidence as Tsubaki told her, she will be able to call her adoptive mother mom. Later, Kokoro receives a message from Masara, who informs her that she and Aimi have already finished their classes, so they will go to tendo practice, and they all go to the place to train.

That afternoon Tsubaki finishes unpacking everything and looks for a place to hang the photo that she has with Yoriko and Ichika next to her. Tsubaki tells Yoriko that she is living well with Matsuri, Kagari, and Suzune, who are like her daughters, and she hopes that the three of them can build a friendship like the one she and Ichika had, though she laughs thinking that Ichika would be embarrassed to hear that. Tsubaki hopes that the three girls can have a good youth and tells Yoriko that she is a mother now and she is not sure that she can be as good as her, but she hopes to be as important to them as Yoriko once was to her and that that is what you want most. Tsubaki asks Yoriko to take care of them from Heaven and she calls her mom again. Tsubaki then thinks about how eager she is to show her daughters her picture when they get back from school, and she thinks about calling Ichika to tell her that she's done moving because otherwise she'll be upset. Tsubaki then thinks of the two and tells them that she is living her life to the fullest.

Etymology

  • Tsubaki's first name is spelled with the kanji for "camellia".
    • Tsubaki is named after a flower, along with Matsuri and Kagari.
    • In the Japanese language of flowers, camellia represent different things depending on the colour. They can represent love, perishing with grace, longing, and waiting.
    • Camellia can also represent femininity, unpretentious grace, and unassuming elegance.[1]
  • Tsubaki's last name, Mikoto, is spelt with the kanji for "beautiful harp". "Mikoto" could also mean noble, precious, or revered.

Trivia

  • Carmen is novel by Prosper Mérimée, which was later adapted into an opera of the same name by Georges Bizet. The story focuses on the titular Carmen, a woman who uses her beauty to charm and deceive men into doing what she wants. In the end, when a man who became enamored with her that she no longer loved insisted she marry him, she refused despite knowing he would kill her, stating that even in death, she would always be free from the influence or claims of others. The name has since become synonymous with beguiling women and femme fatales.
    • Carmen worked in a cigar factory, which may also be a connection to Tsubaki's fire magic.
    • It may also be a reference to carmen, a Latin term for a verse of poetry or, more specifically, a spell or prayer. This form of the word comes from the Latin root canere, meaning "to sing"; thus, carmen means "a thing sung".
  • The form of Tsubaki's Doppel differs significantly from that of her Witch form.
