Summary

Triggered by a strong desire, these Magical Girls have transformed into a Holy Night motif. They’re investigating the strange phenomenon that has happened to them while touring throughout Christmas by means of a mysterious diary. While they’d never admit it, they rather like the way they look.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

This story occurs two years before the events of Arc 1, while Touka, Nemu, and Ui are still in the hospital. One day, as winter rolls around, the girls wrap up their school day in the hospital, with Touka eager to be free of school, given how boring she finds it. Before they can decide what they should play, the teacher has a special announcement: the Satomi Medical Center's school program will be hosting a Christmas party this year! All the students, save Touka and Nemu, are thrilled. Touka complains that Christmas is supposed to be a religious festival; there's no point in them celebrating it. For their purposes, though, the teacher explains it's just an excuse for everyone to have a fun day together. She wants the class to work together to arrange the party and choosing what activities they want to do, and arranges for an in-class discussion next week. In talking about it, Ui discovers Touka and Nemu have never attended a Christmas party. That just makes Ui excited for the three of them to celebrate their first Christmas party together. Instead of focusing on the party, though, Touka decides that she and Ui will play a card game together, while Nemu stakes her claim on her and Ui reading a book together. They both lock horns, only giving in when Ui says she actually wants to do something with all three of them together, meaning Touka and Nemu both lose the bout. Right at the moment Touka and Nemu start bickering again, Iroha makes a surprise visit to the trio while they're leaving class, and chuckles over how they're fighting over Ui once more - but notes that they've also grown quite a lot from when they all first met. Iroha explains that when Ui first transferred to the hospital and met Touka and Nemu, she was worried Ui wouldn't be able to befriend them. Nemu, for one, was deeply withdrawn, while Touka snapped about operating on an entirely different level above the others. At this, Ui realizes out loud that Touka and Nemu have become good friends - see, before, they refused to speak to each other at all, but now, they can freely state whatever's on their mind. And good friends can talk about all kinds of things together, no? Nemu and Touka vehemently object to this notion, and refuse to admit they've changed. That is, until Ui points out that change isn't such a bad thing. For example, Ui herself used to be afraid of looking under the bed, but Nemu wrote a story for her called "Kagetaro Under the Bed," which helped Ui overcome her fear. Meanwhile, Ui used to hate doing tests and taking medicine, but Touka helped her with school and explained why the medicine was important, which makes Ui much more comfortable and confident now. She's grateful that she can spend time with them every day, and that she's grown up so much thanks to the two of them. Put like that, Touka and Nemu decide Ui is right. The four girls head over to Ui's room, where Iroha and Ui's mom awaits, with Touka and Nemu bickering every step of the way, of course. After greeting them all and seeing how enervated Touka and Nemu are, Iroha and her mom excuse themselves for a short meeting with Ui's doctor to let the trio hang out by themselves for a bit. Touka and Nemu argue once more over who gets to play with Ui, but Ui defuses the situation by proposing an activity: planning out the Christmas party! Touka is game, at least once Ui talks about how she's sure Touka can come up with a genius idea for the event, while Nemu grows cold. Ui is sure that if Nemu talks about what she wants to do, it would make everyone in class so happy, but Nemu's classmates are the dead last thing she cares about. Ui apologizes for upsetting Nemu, but really wants the three of them to have a fun time together at the party...and Nemu says she'll do it, as long as it's just her and Ui brainstorming together. By this time, Iroha and her mom return...only to see the argument is still going on. The next morning, the girls go to class. Ui and the other students are excited for the party. Touka and Nemu hang out in the back, with Touka bitterly whining about how she doesn't get why everyone's celebrating Christmas (Nemu asks why Touka is telling her this; it's because Nemu is the only one sitting next to her). Touka is certain that hanging out with her will be way more fun for Ui than a Christmas party. Nemu, fed up with Touka's ego, throws down a challenge, and they agree on the terms: They'll both come up with their own plans for the party and propose them the class meeting next week. Ui will pick the one she likes the most, and the winner gets the right to have Ui to herself all day. The duo goes for it, with Touka's voiced line expressing how confident she is that her plans will be the big winner. Part 2 brings us to the day of the in-class meeting. The teacher will serve as moderator, and the kids will pop in with their ideas. Touka immediately takes the floor, laying out her plan, much to Ui's excitement: Santa Claus himself will be the party's special guest, and they'll have extravagant decorations and a professional band performing. The central event will be "The King's Game," where one student is chosen as king, and the rest of the students will work together to fulfill his or her every desire. And that student will be none other than Touka herself, meaning everyone will have to do whatever she says! That doesn't go over well, allowing Nemu to take over; Ui is over the moon that Nemu came up with a plan, too. Nemu's idea is to write a sequel to that short story Ui loved so much about the monster Kagetaro, which will be read aloud at the party...by Ui. Ui is flattered, but hesitant - the party is for everyone's enjoyment, so she proposes they have all the students take a turn reading it instead. Nemu doesn't like this...and Touka hates the whole dang thing, and makes this known loud and clear. She and Nemu get into a row, and demand Ui pick the winner immediately, which baffles Ui - she certainly hadn't been informed of any such contest! At this point, the teacher intervenes, and Ui takes the opportunity to have everyone else in class take a turn presenting their plans. They add ideas like making Christmas cards for each other, or Ui's idea to sing Christmas carols. Ui loves all of these plans, which befuddles Touka and Nemu, but they insist on taking over again, certain they can incorporate these ideas into their plans. As much as Ui appreciates the gesture, she asks what they, personally, would like to do at the party, independent of Ui's own desires. They say they don't care - Christmas doesn't matter to them. This hurts Ui; she just wants to celebrate Christmas with everyone, but Touka and Nemu refuse to celebrate it with each other. The teacher agrees that while Touka and Nemu's plans had a lot of thought put into them, they ought to be reconsidered, which offends them both to their core. Touka yells that she's not attending the Christmas party and storms out of class, while Nemu breaks down and flees as well. While Ui wants to go after them, the teacher holds her back - they still have class, and it seems like she knows the duo needs some space, anyway, but sends for a nurse to check up on them. After class, Touka's dad comes to check on her, and in between tears, she complains how no one understands her ideas, and demands he cancel the party. Meanwhile, Ui slips into Nemu's room, trying to coax her into a game, but Nemu remains silent and burrowed under her sheets. Touka, having composed herself, traipses into Nemu's room to drag Ui out for a game together, dismissing Ui's concerns about the party. Touka can't resist sniping at Nemu, saying geniuses like her don't have the luxury of moping around in bed all day, which finally gets Nemu to crawl out and fire back, calling Touka a heartless brat. Ui gets distressed as the argument reaches a fever pitch, with Touka smashing some of Nemu's belongings while Nemu's insults cut to the core, making Ui burst into tears. The fight stops at once. Touka and Nemu panic but dry Ui's tears and check on her. Ui says her chest hurts, which makes the duo panic that Ui is having a medical emergency, but Ui says it's not anything like that - it's heartbreak. Ui know she's being selfish in wanting Nemu and Touka to participate in the party, despite their wishes. But she's been hospitalized for much of her life, and has never once gotten to celebrate Christmas with her friends or family. So just this once, she wants to celebrate Christmas with her two best friends, and implores them to consider it just one more time, even if they ultimately say no. With how awkward the atmosphere is now, Ui apologizes and goes back to her room, leaving Touka and Nemu to digest what happened. In her voiced line, Nemu remarks she had no idea what to do in that moment. In part three, we open with Touka sneaking around in the hospital in the dead of the night. She has a letter with her - a simple apology note to Ui (even though apologizing comes so unnaturally to her) - that she plans to leave at Ui's bedside. Along the way, she bumps straight into Nemu, too. They snap at each other, but realize they're both here to apologize to Ui. Nemu admits she believed she understood Ui like the back of her hand, but the Christmas party debacle reveals the contrary - she was a fool for believing so. Touka agrees with that assessment, but they both know how to fix it: They will attend the Christmas party, and offer a plan that will truly make Ui and their classmates happy. Ui wakes up to two unsigned apology notes by her bed - she, of course, knows exactly who wrote each. In a sudden panic, though, she checks under her bed, worried that they saw what she had hidden under there...but her secret's safe, and she smiles once more. In class, Ui is ready to just forget about the party and their incident the other day, but Touka and Nemu ask the class to be given another chance to present their joint idea. It's one that incorporates everyone's desires - after opening remarks from the director, Nemu will host a puppet show using the classmates' favorite stuffed animals to tell the story of "Kagetaro Visits Santa Claus." Then the students will exchange Christmas cards they've created for each other, and sings carols together. Finally, Santa himself will come to give presents to all the kids. Everyone is all-in on the party, and the teacher decides they'll use one of their upcoming classes to have everyone make a single Christmas card (since making them for the entire class is a monumental task), which will be randomly given to another student. The kids are excited for the party, and Touka and Nemu pat themselves on the back. On the big day, everything goes off without a hitch - Nemu's story is a huge success, and the card exchange goes great...except for Touka and Nemu receiving each other's cards, and Ui receiving her own! Touka and Nemu, with their eyes on receiving Ui's card, offer their own...but realize it'd be a losing game, since it'd mean Ui would get the "wrong" card. But before either of them cracks, another girl swaps cards with Ui, beating them both to the punch. Finally, it's time for Santa to make his debut...except it's not Santa: it's Touka's father! He explains Santa was too busy to come today, but he did arrange for gifts from everyone's families. Nemu receives handmade winter socks from her mother, while Ui gets star-pattered pajamas. Touka pouts, but her dad makes it up to her by setting up a meeting with one of Santa's reindeers! ...Which Nemu notes to herself that it's obviously a guy in a reindeer suit, but Touka explains to Ui that since the reindeer clearly violates all known natural laws, it must therefore belong to Santa, which excites Ui. Nemu chuckles and decides not to leave them be. After the party, Ui has one more thing she wants to do for them - she invites them both to her hospital room, sits them down, and presents her Christmas gifts for them. Ui has gotten Touka a beautful candle, while Nemu gets a hardcover copy of a book she's been wanting to read. Ui reveals she kept the gifts hidden under the bed, which gives Nemu mixed feelings - was Ui lying all this time about being scared of looking under there? No, Ui explains - she really was scared. But thanks to Nemu and Kagetaro, she grew the courage to be able to go underneath it; so if it weren't for Nemu, she wouldn't have had any place to hide her gifts. Nemu feels reassured and accepts her gift. It turns out Touka and Nemu have presents of their own for Ui - a set of playing cards based on famous paintings, and a short adventure story starring Ui herself. Ui asks if Touka and Nemu got something for each other, and they banish the very thought. But before they start bickering again, they see how happy Ui is to be celebrating Christmas with them...and they hold back just this once with smiles on their faces. Two years later, during the events of Christmas String, Touka and Nemu are reflecting on that Christmas. They cringe at their behavior back then, but recognize that they were good complements to each other, and that despite their differences, they sincerely enjoyed that year's Christmas. And despite the mess they've gotten themselves into...Nemu admits she enjoys this one as well. She's long assumed that every Christmas would be her last - a day like this was unimaginable to her for many years, and yet here they are. The fact that they're alive is a miracle. And on that note...Nemu says if Ui wants another Christmas party this year, she'd be happy to help arrange it. Touka agrees, and they figure they should invite Iroha and Sakurako this time as well. Touka closes out the story with a voiced line admitting that having a day like this isn't so bad every now and then.
