Ashita's [note 1] (あした屋 ashita-ya) is a candy shop located in Sankyo Ward, first introduced in Magia Record Story Girls in the Hood. It was originally ran by an unnamed elderly lady and her now-deceased husband, but after the events of Magia Record's final chapter, Mikage Yakumo established herself as the next owner. Outside of just candy and snacks, the store offers games such as drawing lots. The store is commonly frequented by children, who tend to quit visiting as they grow older.

The owner has a habit of comically exaggerating the change she gives to people shopping there, in honor of her husband.[1]

Backstory

It is unclear when exactly the store was established, however, it is known that Natsume Books' shopkeeper, or Kako's father, used to come there to play when he was little. Coincidentally, by the time Jun Kazari, Mikura Komachi and Temari Kira[note 2] were in middle school, both Natsume Books and Ashita's were targeted by a land shark, attempting to buy them out to build an apartment complex in the area. Ashita's owner did not own the land on which the store was located, rather, she was renting it from a real estate agent, who offered her the option to buy Ashita's land, as the agent was selling her properties and wasn't entirely pleased with the land shark's offer. However, as the lady did not have enough for the agent, she started preparing to close down Ashita's. Around that time, Jun found old golden coins hidden under Ashita's floor, that she was hesitant to tell the owner about due to her belief the coins were tied to criminal activity and could put the owner in danger. Concerned about the store's future still, Jun decided to make a contract with Kyubey to prevent the store from disappearing. Soon after, Jun found out that the lady found the coins on her own, and that they are legally classified as inheritance from her husband, with whom she used to run Ashita's[note 3]. The coins' worth allowed the lady to purchase Ashita's land and building for herself.[1]

Jun Kazari

Jun lived in Sankyo Ward near Ashita's when she was a child, introducing her to the shop. Despite her parents frequently moving with her due to their job, she kept regularly visiting it well longer than most[1], until her second year of middle school. At that point, she moved out of Kamihama City, and didn't return until two years later.[2] Her first visit afterwards was right before Valentine's Day.[3] However, she opted to avoid going again until Mitsune decides she changed and became confident enough to be able to go there. After Mitsune erased Jun and the rest of Neomagius' memories, Jun started believing she was the one who needs to change before going there. She changed her mind upon hearing from Hagumu that Ashita's owner wanted to see her, and upon their arrival, their memory returned. This was the last time Jun went to Ashita's, as she passed away soon after.[4]

Jun was considered somewhat of a leader of the children regularly attending the shop, and she often played games with them. Occasionally, the shop's owner would have her take care of the shop for short periods of time, with snacks and drawing lots as rewards. Jun also talked about the shop online to "exchange intel" on similar stores, as she believed it's the best candy store in Japan.[2]

Mitsune Miwa

Mitsune first visited Ashita's in her second year of middle school when she met Jun, as the latter wanted to buy her ramune to thank her for helping her find her yo-yo. For the next few days afterwards, the two spent time there together playing with the children, allowing Mitsune to gain a bit of confidence. Eventually, she decided to go on an expedition to a park along with the children, without waiting for Jun to finish her classes. After defeating a Witch there, back at the store, Jun bid Mitsune and the shop owner farewell.[2] Mitsune didn't visit Ashita's again until a year and a half later, after she became a Magical Girl. She went hunting a Witch with Hinano Miyako and Emiri Kisaki, and found it near the shop. During the fight, memories of her time spent with Jun at Ashita's lead her to unleash her Doppel. She didn't visit the shop directly, however.[5] Mitsune seemingly never went to Ashita's afterwards.

Notes

  1. Referred to as Tomorrow Shop in the unofficial translations by Magia Union Translations team
  2. In Magia Archive, Mikura and Temari are stated to be 17, while Jun is stated to be 16. With additional context from typical school age ranges in Japan, this means this story happened around two to three years before Magia Record's Main Story
  3. In the same story, it is also stated that the husband worked as a middle school teacher. It is unclear if he worked two jobs at once, or if the two happened at different times
