Doppel Description

CASUARIUS (Casuarius)

The Doppel of Tantrums.
Its form is a Chick.
The master of this emotion has a strong heart that is not easily shaken, but the one thing that frustrates her is her own youth. Since she and her Doppel are similar in this regard, she cannot bring herself to like it. This young Doppel likewise hates itself, as it hasn’t yet matured enough to freely control its limbs, and is incapable of doing anything besides beg for food. As such, it’s irritated by its master’s own youth as well. It builds up stress from the moment it’s born, and relieves said stress via loud, constant chirping. But when its stress reaches its peak and explodes, the Doppel breaks free from its shell, leaping around wildly and leaving hideous scratch marks on everything in sight. When its master’s stress is added on top of that, the carnage is said to become even worse.

Side Story

Mikage Yakumo's Side Story

The following is a summary by bigscarythings

Lavi, Nayuta and Mikage are having tea together, but Mikage is in a sour mood. When Mikage rejects even candy, Lavi and Nayuta worry that she's sick, until Mikage outright tells them to ask her what's going on, whereupon she reveals that Mitama "betrayed her." What seems to have happened is that Mikage was going to Mitama's shop with a surprise gift for Mitama, eager to see the look on Mitama's face...but finds Momoko, Kaede and Rena are there, telling a story to Mitama and joking around with her. Yachiyo and Mifuyu soon arrive with some snacks to share, which makes Mitama thrilled. Mikage explains that she believed neither she or Mitama had any friends, and the fact that Mitama now has them feels like a betrayal. Lavi suggests that if Mikage is jealous, then she should strive to make friends, too - since Mikage doesn’t want to make friends with her schoolmates, Lavi suggests making some Magical Girl friends instead. With that decided, Mikage's mood flips right around.

Some time later, at school, some NPCs spot Mikage - one of them seems to have been one of Mikage's bullies - and they make a point to avoid Mikage as she walks by. Mikage shrugs it off, determined to make lots of Magical Girl friends - until she realizes she doesn't actually know where to find them to begin with. Mikage goes to the middle school and asks Himika where to meet Magical Girls. Himika suggests the Coordinator's, but Mikage wants to keep this mission a secret from Mitama. Himika knows one place that fits the bill - Emiri's counseling center!

Himika and Mikage go to the consultation center, where Sasara, Asuka, Kanoko and Emiri are chatting. Himika introduces Mikage as Mitama's sister, which surprises Asuka, Sasara, and Emiri. The more they look her over, the more obvious it becomes, and they quickly fawn over her (cue that one memoria) - Mikage helps herself to some candy and revels in the attention - she didn't realize being Mitama's sister could make her so popular. At Emiri’s prompting, Mikage explains that she's looking for a Magical Girl to be her friend - but, Emiri points out, isn't she already Mikage's friend? Along with Sasara, Kanoko, and Asuka? Sasara and Kanoko point out that friendship isn't that simple. Asuka proposes that Mikage can deepen her friendships with a hard workout at the dojo. When Sasara calls her out for recruiting, Asuka switches the topic to fashion, which the other girls eager join in on. Through this, Mikage sees and actually likes Kanoko's designs, and agrees to try on some of the outfits that are stored in the counseling office, and their impromptu fashion show is a blast.

She and Himika leave, but Mikage wonders if they really are friends - since Kanoko is closer to Mitama's age, were they just amusing her like a kid instead of seeing her as a friend? Mikage deicdes she wants to meet some girls around her age, prompting Himika to suggest meeting Ui, along with Touka and Nemu. Mikage isn't so sure about being able to befriend Touka and Nemu, in light of them being geniuses, but will think about it.

When Mikage returns home, she's surprised Mitama came home early. Mitama reveals a girl, Ui, has been kidnapped by Promised Blood. Expressing her fear that something will happen to Mikage, she urges Mikage not to reveal to anyone she's a Magical Girl and not to interact with anyone from the KMU. Mikage reluctantly agrees, but in her voiced line, expresses frustration that she was making friends, but now, her efforts have been foiled.

Some time later, Mitama prepares to head out for more adjustment appointments, and Mikage gets mad at the hypocrisy - how come Mitama gets to go out and meet with KMU people, while Mikage is supposed to avoid them? Mitama argues that she's there for work, but Mikage points out that Mitama gets to have fun and goof around with her clients - it's not strictly business. Mitama changes tacks by urging Mikage to have patience, but Mikage is fed up - she's going to find a new big sister! She runs out and goes to Emiri's office, which turns out to be closed. That's when Rika and Ren approach - seems like they wanted to pop in and hang out with Emiri, too - and bump into Mikage. Rika assumes Mikage is a thief, but Mikage points out she knows Emiri, and Ren and Rika quickly connect the dots and realize she's Mitama's sister.

From there, copying an earlier summary - Rika and Mikage hit it off over fashion. Rika takes Mikage to check out some low-price fashion stores, and Mikage explains the situation with Mitama along the way. At the store, Mikage loves the items on sale, but left her wallet at home, and only has 100 yen to spare. She tries puppy dog eyes on Rika, but Rika immediately catches on and tells her (with a sad look) that she won't buy it for Mikage. The three end up playing a crane game instead. Mikage loses her round, and Rika caves in and takes over, winning several stuffed animals, giving them to Ren and Mikage. Mikage asks Rika to be her big sister; Rika turns her down, but says she's happy to help Mikage when she needs it, and encourages her to talk to Mitama.

Mikage still isn't in the mood to come home, however. She instead decides to go find Kanoko, based on knowing Kanoko’s ward and that her family owns a factory. She successfully does so. When she gets caught, it seems like she tries disguising herself behind the stuffed animals Rika got for her, but Kanoko tells her to cut it out. Kanoko says she'll overlook the fact that Mikage basically stalked her, but says Mikage should go home, since it's getting dark. Mikage explains her issues, and Kanoko decides to let Mikage hang out for a bit and help make a pendant. It goes well. Mikage asks if Kanoko wants to be her sister, tempting her with the idea of Kanoko getting to dress up her sister, but before Kanoko can give in, Mitama finds them. She's had to go around and talk to a lot of girls to help trace Mikage's steps, and makes to drag Mikage home. Mikage pleads for Kanoko to help, but Kanoko tells her she had it coming, and it's best to have family members who scold you - her dad is strict, but she knows it's because he cares for her and is helping her.

At home, Mitama lays out the facts - Mikage is making lots of friends, which isn't a bad thing, but Mitama made it clear she's not to get involved with KMU girls. Mitama says Mikage needs to keep her phone charged - she's been calling Mikage all day with no response. That reveals that Mikage had blocked Mitama, and Mitama gets stern - they're in the middle of a war right now; anything could happen. Mikage finally vents her issues to Mitama - she's not allowed to make friends with magical girls, nor can she make at school (but she doesn't want to get along with her schoolmates to begin with), but Mitama gets to have all the friends she wants. All Mitama can do is apologize, but Mikage is still mad. Hungry, however, Mikage soon goes to the kitchen, and finds Mitama has made all of Mikage's favorite foods for dinner. In an off-screen sequence, she finds Mitama and apologizes (and Mitama does likewise), and Mikage gives Mitama the pendant she made with Kanoko.

In her voiced line, she apologizes to Mitama again, knowing how hard Mitama must have it right now.

For reasons that will be apparent in a few sentences, this seems to take place some time after Act 1 and 2. Mitama wears Mikage's pendant everywhere she goes. Today, Mitama is delivering(?) something to the guy running for mayor (the election is a recurring plot point in arc 2 so far), and Mikage wants to go, too. Mitama says it'll be boring and doesn't want to bother Mikage, but when Mikage frets, Mitama sends her on an errand to return a bento container to Chiaki's. Along the way, Mikage tries to act mature, and once there, bumps into Riko and Ui. She doesn't recognize them, but they recognize her as Mitama's kid sister. Even though, again, Mikage isn't supposed to hang out with them, once Ui invites her to play, she quickly agrees. First, however, Riko has to finish her work, so the three team up to help her finish her chores, though Mikage is determined to act like the big sister to Riko and Ui.

It doesn't work. Riko is the most experienced one, after all, and Mikage makes a lot of mistakes. She feels bad, but Ui and Riko are very happy with her work, which prompts Mikage to ask them, "Why are you two so kind?" She explains how the other kids at school aren't anything like them. Riko explains Mikage did her best, and did all this to help Riko, which makes her so happy. Mikage asks if all magical girls are like this - she explains her mission to make friends, noting how all the magical girls she's met so far seem so kind. Ui theorizes it's because magical girls are born of hope (and thus don't want to hurt people or make them sad), and that they know pain, which makes them kinder people as a result - at least, that's Iroha's take. With their work done, the three of them are now free to go play, and run out to do so. Mikage decides to herself that she wants to be friends with Riko and Ui, and introduce them to Sudachi someday so all four of them can be friends and play together.

The next day, Mikage is eager to go out again, but Mitama stops her, pleading with her to tell the truth of where she's going and with who. Mikage cracks and explains she's going out to play with Ui and Riko at Riko's place, even though she knows she's not supposed to meet with KMU girls. Mitama asks her yet again to please not go out, and Mikage cedes. Mitama apologizes profusely. Shortly after, however, Mikage gets texts from Riko and Ui, who explain they've been ordered to stay home, too. This prompts Mikage to flash back to the night she made her wish - we don't see her exact wish, but after the flashback, she thinks to herself: She's known her sister's wish. Ever since Mikage's wish was granted, it feels like she's been "riding a wave." Try as she might, no matter what she does, it feels like she "can't move forward," citing how she's been kept away from the KMU girls. She says she "can't do this alone…" We finish off with Mikage having tea again with Lavi and Nayuta, who want updates on Mikage's hunt for friends. Mikage explains how she's met a lot of Magical Girls, but she kept getting stymied by Mitama telling her not to associate with KMU girls. Lavi explains how the KMU girls are terribly upset, but she and Nayuta don't elaborate when Mikage asks why. Mikage seems to accept the lack of answer, to Nayuta's surprise. To this, Mikage says "I think all this had to happen." She'll roll with this for now, but knows there will be a time when there will be a "big wave" that cannot be resisted, and that will when she has to act to change it. Nayuta says that's a big task, but Mikage is confident she can do it! She thinks to herself, "Knowing my sister's wish...I pushed back on the wave she caused!"

She says she won't give up on making friends with the KMU, either. She says out loud that Lavi and Nayuta are much older than her, so they're not exactly friends with her, but...wait a minute! They can be her big sisters instead! She instantly starts calling them such and pleads for them to take her to the candy shop. Lavi and Nayuta seem to give each other a look, then decide to treat Mikage just for one day. In the end, Mikage's voiced line expresses how one day, she wants her and Sudachi to be able to play with everyone.

Costume Stories

Mikage Yakumo's Costume Stories

Mikage and Sudachi are looking through a magazine while at the candy shop, and discover a new and adorable hoodie. Mikage wishes that she had the money to afford it, which prompts the store owner tells her to not say things like a ‘lousy adult’. Sudachi is also short on cash, and inadvertently reminds Mikage that Valentine’s Day is coming up. Mikage says she would love to buy a large chocolate cake if she could, but she had just spent the last of her allowance on a popsicle. As she mopes over this, Sudachi tells her about something she saw on the internet called ‘The Straw Millionare’. It was about a guy that started bartending with a simple paper clip, but in the end, he got himself a house. Mikage checks her popsicle stick, and notices that it was a winner, and can be exchanged for a prize. Encouraged, she decides to try the challenge, and makes her first trade with Sudachi, receiving her ramune for the popsicle stick. Soon after, Jun makes a surprise visit to the shop after she left Kamihama for two years. After a warm reunion, Jun meets the two girls and decides to join in on their straw game. Mikage offered her ramune to Jun after she had planned to get some herself, and the second trade was made. Jun bought a large bagful of candy, with the request that the two friends kept coming back to the candy shop, vaguely alluding to her wish.

That evening, Mikage gets home with the bag of candy, and overhears Mitama getting upset over not being able to afford a high-brand hair mist that she wanted. She comes out of her room and gets embarrassed that her sister heard her, knowing that she needs to be a good role model. Mitama offers to make dinner for Mikage, before noticing the bag of candy. Mikage briefly gets anxious, before explaining ‘The Straw Millionare’ to her. Mitama curiously asks about what her goal target is, and Mikage pauses, before saying that she wanted to get a nice Valentine’s Day gift. Happy for her sister, Mitama wishes her luck.

The next day, Mikage visits Nayuta and Lavi, and tells them about her plan while offering the bag of candy. Lavi agrees as long as the trade is fair, even by a little. She offers a storybook titled ‘By Otranto’s Seashore’, which was based on a folktale. Lavi had accidentally purchased two copies of the book, excited by the fact that Nayuta’s father had helped translate it. She also claims that since the copy was brand new, it would sell for a good price at a secondhand book store, so Mikage decides that her next stop is Kako’s bookstore.

However, when she arrives and begins talking with Kako, she notices a sign saying that items will not be bought from minors that don’t have a guardian present. Disheartened, Mikage exits the store with an apology, leaving Kako confused. When outside, Mikage wonders about what she should do, but the moment is short lived when Kush, who was sleepwalking, bumped into her, causing both of them to fall over. Kush apologizes and tries to deny that she was sleepwalking, only to. Briefly fall asleep on the spot. Mikage’s bag had spilled out when she fell, exposing the book and Kush recognizing it as a book that she was looking for. After the two introduce each other and discuss the straw game, Kush offers to trade some mall gift certificates, while expressing her admiration for the book’s author. She then stumbled off to her night school, barely awake once again. Mikage was confused and worried about her lethargic demeanor, but was excited that she would be going to the mall tomorrow.

The following day, Mikage looks around the mall and begins browsing the cakes being offered. She briefly gets tempted to proceed with her initial Valentine’s plan, before recalling how Kush sounded when she received the book she wanted, and decides to move on. Mikage then finds a game corner, and remembers overhearing the conversation with Jun and then candy shop owner, where the former mentioned wanting a certain large star squid plush. In one of the crane machines, Mikage finds that exact plush. With many tries, and using up all her certificates, she finally manages to win the plush.

That night at home, Mikage hops onto an online exchange bulletin board, and finds a request for the squid doll, and one of the items it was offering to trade with, was the hoodie that Mikage wanted from the magazine. She contacts the person behind the post, and is surprised by how quickly they responded. The trade goes off without a hitch, with the user saying that the squid doll was intended to be a present, most likely to Jun herself. The two package their items and mail them, with the poster covering the shipping costs. A few days later, the hoodie arrives in brand new condition. Mikage decides to try it on just once, and ends up loving it to the point where she wails about wanting to keep it. Overhearing her outburst, Mitama asks about how the challenge is going, and Mikage confesses that even though she got what she initially wanted, she was tempted to stop and just keep the hoodie. Mitama sympathizes with her, stating that they’re sisters, and that it is important to acknowledge said feelings, but then decide on what to do next. Mikage thanks her sister for the advice, and to go trade the hoodie for something even bigger, where everyone can be happy. This whole time, Mitama thought this was all for Sudachi, but was promptly told that the two friends each have someone important in mind, leaving Mitama to wonder about who it could be.

A few days later, Mikage brings her mother to the flea market so that she could actually participate, and at the end of the day, she was finally satisfied. On Valentine’s Day, Mikage surprises Mitama with the gift that she had been building up to. Upon opening it, Mitama discovers the Roné hair mist that she really wanted. Realizing everything, Mitama tearfully thanks her sister, before asking how she went from the hoodie to the hair mist. Mikage explains that since the hoodie was brand new, lots of people wanted it, and she got a high-brand fragrance that she later traded for the hair mist with Nayuta, who used it all the time. Mitama hugs her, saying that she’s grateful and proud to have a sister like Mikage.

Some time later, Mikage is back at the candy shop, however, she is now wearing the hoodie that she wanted. She tells Sudachi that Mitama bought the hoodie for her as a way of thanks. The candy owner is impressed that Mikage didn’t waver from her objective during the whole thing, but Mikage calls herself a bad kid for having thoughts of temptations. The candy woman tells her that since she was able to overcome those temptations, two sisters and their smiles were able to blossom. Mikage finds herself agreeing as Sudachi smiles along with her.

Close friends and Magical Girls who have taken the forms of the "Befana", witches from Italian folklore. They fly across the Kamihama sky on a broom, delivering Christmas sweets as presents. They are well-equipped with hot packs underneath their clothes to endure the harsh cold.

Side Story

Nayuta & Mikage's (Holiday) Side Story

The MGS kicks off with Nayuta being awoken to the sound of sleigh bells - it's Christmas morning, which makes it the perfect surprise alarm clock. Unfortunately, Lavi complains that her arm is so sore from shaking it that she'll never use it as an alarm again, much to Nayuta's disappointment. Before she can get mopey, however, Mikage arrives at their door - much earlier in the morning than usual. Lavi lets Mikage in, who explains that since they couldn't play together on Christmas Eve, she's going to spend all day with them today. Nayuta suggests they tackle their winter break homework together, but Mikage says they have no time for that - they ought to take advantage of the new Befana outfits that Yozuru and Sudachi coordinated for them!

Earlier, Sudachi had explained that their altered forms will go away once Christmas is over, since they're inconvenient for daily use; given that, Mikage wants to do something special with them today. (Nayuta remarks that Mikage is the sort who will want anything if you slap a "limited edition" label on it) Still, Nayuta agrees - they can do something in the spirit of Befana the witch. Lavi explains that the magic associated with the outfit can trace the thoughts and histories of those who give gifts, so they could possibly do something with that, but Nayuta notes how Coordinated outfits get their magic based on the will of the person receiving the adjustment; this magic has little to do with the Befana of folklore, and the girls really want to play Befana today.

When Mikage wonders about the story behind Befana, Lavi explains how she is a witch who hands out treats to good kids; that Befana, in search of Jesus Christ, uses starlight as her guide to stuff stockings with baked goods and gifts. Hearing this story gives Nayuta an idea - they can bake cakes and other treats and gift them to the other magical girls!

Mikage loves the idea, but Lavi realizes that means they need to buy ingredients and get to baking ASAP - Nayuta assures that according to her calculations, they should have enough time; Lavi deadpans that she doesn't trust the calculations of someone who's never been in a kitchen before. But onward they go with the plan.

At the store, Nayuta figures they should buy as much flour, sugar, butter and so on as they can afford, given they don't know how many people they will be baking for; it's an economical decision, too, given how long those goods last. Lavi points out that in doing so, however, they won't be able to afford short-term goods like milk, eggs, and fruit...but Mikage just so happens to notice a poster for a Christmas costume contest going on at the store. It turns out the doubles division winner gets a week's supply of high-quality eggs!

Lavi suggests Mikage and Nayuta participate in their Befana costumes, which flusters Nayuta. Nayuta accuses Lavi of doing this out of frustration of having her morning derailed and to embarrass Nayuta, but Lavi insists it's simply because she knows for a fact that Nayuta and Mikage will win. Nayuta complains to herself that sometimes, she has no idea what's going through Lavi's head...

Of course, Nayuta and Mikage are the clear winners of the costume contest, which flusters Nayuta but thrills Mikage! With the eggs secured, they can now afford all the other ingredients they'd like; Mikage is so happy they entered, and Nayuta admits she is as well, thanking Lavi for pushing her. Lavi is chuffed that her prediction was right - and shares the photos she took of the two of them.

There's no time to dawdle, though - they need to get home and get cooking wrapped up before noon! At this, Nayuta wonders how long it takes to bake a cake. After briefly taking some digs at Nayuta over her "calculations," Lavi explains that they're probably better off making cookies as well as cakes given the time and number of people they're baking for. Mikage notes that she last made cookies a long time ago with her mom; those cookies were an overnight recipe, but Lavi quickly finds recipes they can make in a much shorter span of time.

With all of the hard work Lavi has been doing, Nayuta insists that Lavi takes a break; she and Mikage can handle baking themselves. When Lavi shows trepidation, remarking that she only sees a cruel future for Nayuta and baking, Mikage assures her that if the two of them get into any trouble, their excellent teamwork will show them through, given that they're champions of the Doubles Division...

...And, of course, things quickly go south. Lavi remarks out loud that the sooner they give up, the sooner they can recover; and intervenes to put things back on track, much to Nayuta and Mikage's gratitude. Lavi starts off too rough on them, but after her students complain, she realizes it's not a productive way of teaching them, and switches from criticizing them to noting what they're doing right (which isn't much), and then offering suggestions on how to improve. Still, she was correct in that Nayuta’s future in baking was a grim one.

In the end, they have a bunch of various treats, and one beautifully-arranged strawberry cake; Lavi remarks its recipient will be very lucky. By the end of things, they have a great selection of treats for the other magical girls. Lavi brushes off Mikage and Nayuta's gratitude, saying "I was just doing my duty as a servant," and says she'll be cleaning the house while they distribute the goods. Nayuta says that when they give out the treats, she'll explain they're treats from all three of them. Lavi, after a pause, says it’s not necessary and asks that Nayuta and Mikage be on their way. On their way out, Mikage wonders if they actually need to put the baked goods into people's socks to follow the spirit of Befana - which Nayuta immediately vetoes. Act 1 ends with Mikage's voiced line, where she's eager to hand out treats to everyone.

In Act 2, the girls determine their stops - one place will be Puella Care, as thanks for Sudachi and Yozuru having helped them out during the event story. Afterwards, they'll go find where the Mikazuki squad is hanging out and give treats to them. As soon as they decide on that, though, Mikage asks that their first stop be Mitama's shop - so that's where they go. There, they bump into Maria and Konomi. Maria immediately starts doting on Mikage, and Mikage basks in the praise, while Konomi, once the conversation mentions Lavi, is in awe over the rumors surrounding Lavi.

Soon, however, Mitama has her eyes on the prize - the bag of sweets! Mikage eagerly explains how they're both playing Befana today, and hands out some treats to Mitama, Maria, and Konomi. They're all delighted by the treats - even better than what you could get in a restaurant, Konomi declares (who's also enamored by the tulip-like frosting on her cake). Mitama is astonished that Mikage has become so talented at baking now, and Mikage explains that Lavi taught her. Really, if it hadn't been for Lavi, they'd never be able to pull this off. Mikage uses this topic to wheedle Mitama for permission to see the Mikazuki girls to give them their goods, even though Mitama forbade her in the past from associating with girls from the Kamihama Magia Union. Mitama allows her to do so - getting a cake from her beloved little sister seems to be an excellent bribe.

Next up, the girls visit Mikazuki, greeting Iroha and Yachiyo at the door and explaining what they're up to. Iroha offers to fetch Touka, since she's right downstairs, but they know Touka is busy, and offer to leave her share of treats upstairs. Once inside, Mikage lights up at seeing Ui's gift this year, a makeup kit from Mikage's favorite fashion magazine; Ui offers to try it out with her. Meanwhile, Felicia wants to do battle with her stuffed animal versus Sana's, which cows Sana at first - but Mikage points out that Sana's present is a cat, while Felicia's is a half-fish monster, so clearly, the cat will win - and all of sudden, Sana is game to duel!

Nayuta chuckles about how much fun everyone seems to be having; it seems like Tsuruno and Yachiyo pooled their funds together to get everybody their gifts. All in all, everyone involved had a wonderful Christmas - Iroha asks whether Nayuta as well? After hesitating, Nayuta decides that she did, given the fun morning she had with Lavi. But that hesitation stands out like a sore thumb...

Speaking of Lavi, Iroha remarks that she doesn't really know what kind of person Lavi is, beyond "cool and mysterious," and thinks perhaps she's like Yachiyo when the two of them first met. Tsuruno remarks that people in the shopping district call Lavi the second Yachiyo Nanami; Yachiyo is pained by this, knowing the story that happened in The Peaceful Daily Life of Nayuta's House, and wonders how on earth she's perceived by the folks of the shopping district.

All this, however, makes Nayuta realize that she really doesn't know what kind of person Lavi is, either, even now. But her eyes drift onto the clock, and she realizes she needs to skedaddle if they're going to get everyone their gifts in time! Mikazuki thanks the duo one last time - with Iroha offering thanks on Touka and Nemu's behalf, too.

Their next stop is to Suitoku Temple - they owe the Tokimes a big favor from The Peaceful Daily Life of Nayuta's House event, though Nayuta is a bit nervous given that they're all Buddhists, and Christmas is a Christian holiday; fortunately, however, jolly Ryouko accepts the bounty. The Tokimes themselves actually had a Christmas party the other night, in fact - Asahi explains they had a great dinner, and then a Secret Santa gift exchange; Shizuka didn't really get what Christmas is all about, but she had lots of fun, and that's what matters. For their gift exchange, it sounds like everyone prepared a present without knowing who they would be trading their gift with, so they needed to have a good idea of a gift that's meaningful to themselves, but would also be meaningful to their friends. In the end, everyone loved their gifts (Chharu gave an onmyoji mystery novel to Ryouko; Ryouko gave a massage coupon courtesy of Ryouko herself to Chiharu; Asahi gave Chika camouflage loungewear; Chika gave Asahi homemade jerky; Shizuka gave Sunao a photo book about trains; and Sunao got Shizuka a kimo-kawaii (creepy-cute) T-shirt - which Sunao hadn't realized was creepy at all, but Shizuka is pleased as punch about it, anyway)

Seeing all this, however, puts Nayuta in a funk - the girls all get to live together, know each other deeply, and are very comfortable with one another - but what about her and Lavi...? Still, they have one more stop to go; after some chatter, the Tokimes thank them once more, the duo hurries on their way.

At Puella Care, the trio gratefully accepts their treats! Nayuta asks if they did a gift exchange like the other groups did,and it turns out that it was just gift-giving courtesy of Livia. Specifically, in the dead of the night, Livia dressed up as Santa, beard and all, to leave presents for Yozuru and Sudachi; except Livia slipped on some whipped cream and fell with a crash, waking everyone up. She's convinced she shattered Sudachi's belief in Santa...except Sudachi knew all along, and Livia realizes, much to her chagrin, that she didn't have to go through that trouble to begin with

Mikage points out that Mitama does just the same thing - she wears a fake Santa beard while on the job! Yozuru takes note of this, thinking perhaps it's necessary for standing out as a Coordinator, but Livia quickly disavows Yozuru of this notion. Still, Mikage notes how giving presents is an act of kindness - after a moment of consideration, Livia says it was a just reward for Yozuru and Sudachi for working so hard, of course, and so far away from home as well.

But this stings Nayuta once more - she herself is not celebrating with her family, but more importantly, neither is Lavi... After Puella Care thanks them, Mikage wonders where they'll head next - but Nayuta decides they'll be returning home. In her voiced line, Nayuta is happy to see everyone’s smiling faces...but...

In Act 3, the girls return home, exhausted. Lavi welcomes them inside, just asking that they not disturb her since she's still cleaning the house. Nayuta notes to herself that this is highly unusual - Lavi is usually all done by now - but soon, her mind drifts to all the people they'd met today. Everyone had a very merry Christmas, but... Lavi jars her out of her funk, asking if Nayuta's day went poorly. Quite the contrary, Nayuta explains; her only concern is...did she and Lavi have a happy Christmas, too, even though they couldn’t be with their families?

Lavi responds by saying it was great to lighten up everyone's days, but she thinks Nayuta may have given too much of herself - working hard for everyone else's sake today without rest, and without her family (and, as Nayuta realizes, without any presents for herself - her dad used to shower her with gifts this time of year). But even though it's late in the evening, Christmas isn't over yet. Lavi fetches two boxes, one for Mikage, and the other for Nayuta. It turns out they're both matching scarves, with Lavi having the third to complete the set. The scarf even matches the design of the one Nayuta's dad wears!

As the three members of the Operation: Find Nayuta's Dad squad, they all have matching gear now - and Nayuta is over the moon, taking Lavi into a crushing hug. Lavi apologizes for isolating herself from them today, but it was for the sake of finishing their gifts - Mikage notes that they’ve been getting poor Lavi into a lot of shenanigans lately, which is why Lavi couldn’t get them done on time.

Nayuta is just so happy with the present; Lavi thinks not even a child would be this thrilled to receive something. Nayuta asks "But don't you like receiving presents, Lavi?" to which Lavi says no - she's sixteen now; she's long grown out of that phase. In that case, Mikage and Nayuta decide they might as well give Lavi her gift now - which ends up being the perfect strawberry cake they made that Lavi praised! Nayuta thanks Lavi again; Lavi in turn points out again that she was just doing her job...and says that Nayuta makes for a strange master (but she smiles and thanks Nayuta, anyway). Nayuta remarks that Lavi is a strange servant herself - who would make handmade scarves for their master? Mikage realizes this is like the Tokime gift exchange, and when she puts it like that, Nayuta doesn't feel so jealous of the Tokime's living situation anymore.

Nayuta, full of joy, can't hold back any longer - she asks that they all wear their scarves to dinner together. Lavi chuckles and goes along with it, thinking about how they've become such a strange family - but a family nevertheless.

As the trio rests up after a hearty supper, Nayuta reflects on her relationship with Lavi - Lavi is an incredible girl of many talents, who always knows just what Nayuta is thinking...but she can't say the same in turn. It feels like she knows nothing about Lavi. In some of their conversations today, there was a certain bitterness in her statements (note: comments like "You're bound to fail", "I can only see a cruel future for you (and baking)", etc) The more Nayuta thinks about it, the less she understands...for example, why does Lavi bother herself over Nayuta so much to begin with? Is it really just because she was hired to do so? What are Lavi's true feelings? And in that moment, it hits her - her personal magic in this outfit allows her to trace a gift giver's thoughts and past...

It's about time for Mikage to go home, though - she's already very late in coming home, but she just doesn't want to leave the warm house for the cold outdoors. Nayuta clutches Lavi's scarf in hand, trying to steel herself to read Lavi's feelings...but time is running out. Lavi offers to escort Mikage home, and Nayuta realizes she can do it herself, then use her adjusted magic to scan Lavi's feelings without Lavi knowing...but in the end, she decides to stay home, bidding Mikage and Lavi a good night.

With that, the clock strikes midnight, and there's now no chance for Nayuta to use her magic. The mystery of Lavi's feelings remain. But...she's much more content with it than she had originally guessed. It'd be strange to crack open Lavi's feelings with magic like this - and in fact, she feels like a huge burden has been lifted from her shoulders. She thinks about how cold it is outside, and decides to have a hot cup of tea ready for Lavi when she comes home.

Powers and Abilities

In Chapter 11 of Arc 2 is revealed, by Himena Aika, that Mikage's power is "Body Collapse". Himena takes Mikage's power (along side Nayuta and Alexandra's powers) with her Synthesis unique ability to fight Lavi Himuro when she fused with all the Kimochi Stones. It seems Mikage's power can weaken the "body" of any of her targets, making them physically weaker.

Etymology

  • The characters in her last name mean "eight" (八) and "cloud" (雲) respectively.
  • Mikage means "divine spirit," it's basically translated "spirit of the dead". Yakumo, meanwhile, is a famous poem like Iroha's name is, said to be literally the first poem in Japanese ever written (by Susanoo himself, no less). Extremely roughly translated, it goes: "From eight rising clouds I build a wondrous eightfold fence in Izumo to contain my divine bride; oh wondrous eightfold fence."
  • Her doppel name, Casuarius, is the genus of the Cassowary species, an aggressive flightless bird native to the Australian area, with a reputation to attack both animals and humans alike unprovoked.

Trivia

  • Her wish is revealed in Arc 2 Chapter 8 of the main story to have protected Kamihama against Walpurgisnacht and Shitori Egumo.
  • Her Soul Gem shape is similar to that of her sister, but instead of plus-shaped, it is x-shaped.
  • Despite its description mentioning it breaking free of its shell and leaping around, Mikage's Doppel never actually does so in its animation.
  • Her innate magic is revealed in Arc 2 Chapter 11 to be destroying opponents at their foundation. It’s also revealed that she has never used this ability.
