Side Story

Kanagi Izumi reflects on her life. She loves the town where she was born and raised. That is why she desires equality and peace. To achieve that, she has to handle things as they come, since there isn't a single solution for everything.

Kanagi works as a maid at a café in Shinsei Ward. She is unfamiliar with the West Side and maid culture, but she took the job because the pay was good. She has become popular with customers. At the café, people from both East and West come together to enjoy their hobbies, and the atmosphere is refreshing for someone raised on East-West troubles. The manager asks the maids to create limited-time menu items for an event where customers guess who made which dish. Kanagi asks Karin Misono for help with her item.

Kanagi reflects on when she first started working at the café. She was failing and about to be sent to the kitchen. Karin encouraged her, gave her a textbook on being a maid, and taught her practical skills. She even came up with a signature pose and catchphrase for Kanagi. Despite Kanagi's continued struggles, Karin kept encouraging her, saying overcoming preoccupations brings growth. Thanks to Karin, Kanagi was able to make up for her mistakes and continue as a maid. Her menu item is a "Sad Kitty of Beginner's Resolve," meant to remind her of where it all started.

The menu event begins. Customers eagerly try to guess Kanagi's item. Two customers start arguing about Kanagi's true nature. One believes she is straightforward and sincere, while the other believes she has a hidden, mysterious side. Their argument escalates into a dispute about identity and background, reflecting the East-West conflict. Karin tells Kanagi to give the customers a stern talking to.

Kanagi tries to mediate the argument. The manager proposes a debate between the two groups. Team Face Value argues Kanagi's menu item must be the "Triple-Pressed Rice Balls," while Team Hidden Side argues it must be the "Super Kawaii Seaweed Character Bento." Kanagi realizes she was also bound by bias, assuming East-West rivalry was inevitable. The manager suggests announcing the winning dish.

Kanagi remembers when she became a Magical Girl. She could not accept the circumstances of being from the East, where people are feared and avoided. She wished to know the reason why everyone hates Daito. She gained the power to read minds. She learned there was no clear reason—the hatred was based on years and years of bias, not anything specific.

Kanagi announces her menu item: the "Sad Kitty of Beginner's Resolve." She explains the mascot was drawn by Karin to remind her of her beginner's resolve. Both teams realize they failed to do her justice. They shake hands and reconcile. After the event, Kanagi thanks Karin and takes a special photo with her, allowing her face to be shown as a sign of trust. Kanagi learns that even with misunderstandings and biases, people can overcome them if they give each other a chance. By striving to bury their biases, they may someday unlock a peaceful, equal future.
