Doppel Description

CATACOMBE (Catacombe)

The Doppel of demolition.
Its form is a hearth lion.
The master of this emotion is coolheaded, but her Doppel is burning with endless rage. Its form is a rampaging lion that rends all around it to pieces with its gnashing teeth. It refuses to forgive the smallest of injustices and demolishes anything it deems irrational. Strictness incarnate, it may target others simply for living in Kamihama, so its master must take care when summoning it, lest it hurt her allies. If she continues to use this Doppel, she may become similarly unforgiving. It may be uncontrollable, but its master half agrees with its judgement.

The hems are frayed, there are visible stains, the fabric is worn. It’s clear this has been passed down through the hands of many girls. Put your arms through its sleeves and you can easily sense your town and status with your whole body. It’s natural for the wearer of such a significant item to contemplate her own future.

Side Story

Kanagi Izumi's Side Story

Kanagi destroys a witch. She notices that witches have become more numerous and powerful than before, and decides to let every magical girl know about this. She first meets Tsukasa Amane, and says she wants to introduce her to someone. Kanagi takes Tsukasa to Mitama Yakumo. Mitama says Tsukasa looks just like her sister Tsukuyo Amane. Kanagi reveals Tsukuyo and Mitama used to be classmates. Mitama then uses her power on Tsukasa. Kanagi then asks Mitama if she's noticed any changes. Mitama says she's been having more customers from all over Kamihama. Kanagi then explains the increased presence and power of witches, which is something that Mitama has already noticed

Tsukasa then received a call from Tsukuyo, and says she has to head to Mizuna Ward. Tsukasa thanks Kanagi and Mitama and departs. Mitama says she'll close her shop for today, and asks if she can go home with Kanagi. As they walk home, some passerby are surprised to see that Mitama and Kanagi are wearing Daitou uniforms. The next day, Kanagi is working at a maid cafe when Tsukasa arrives. Tsukasa says something happened yesterday. However, Tsukasa runs off before she can explain. Kanagi texts Tsukasa, but Tsukasa tells her not to worry.

Kanagi returns home and is welcomed by her parents. Her mother says she's making dinner. Kanagi points out that her mother forgot to start the rice cooker. Kanagi's brother arrives. Kanagi asks him to set the table. Kanagi's brother asks his father about his leg. Kanagi's father says it still hurts, and says if he wasn't injured things would be easier. Kanagi tells him not to worry. Kanagi's father then notices his son has a bruise on his hand. The boy says some people from the west part of Kamihama City tried to pick a fight. Kanagi's brother claims to have ignored them, but he was so angry he punched a wall. Kanagi thinks about the events of the past few days, and decides she needs to meet the other magical girls.

Later Kanagi meets Himika Mao, and explains what she found about witches. Kanagi says Mao hasn't been a magical girl for that long and she should be careful. Kanagi says she's always available to help and goes off to warn more magical girls. Before she leaves, Himika gives Kanagi her family's special energy drink. Kanagi find she doesn't like it at all. Kanagi then meets with Seika Kumi and Leila Ibuki. Kanagi tells them about the changes in witches. The girls say they thought it was something like that, and their friend Mito Aino also noticed this issue where she lived. Kanagi says they should hunt witches in groups of two from now on. The girls thank Kanagi, who says it's no trouble. Kanagi leaves, and Leila and Seika call her cool.

Kanagi goes to Mitama's place and finds the Amanes leaving. Upon seeing Kanagi the two girls run off. Meeting with Mitama, Kanagi tells her to be careful. Mitama says she's been finding familiars around her place, and she was having Momoko Togame help her clear them out. Kanagi muses that the conflict between east and west has calmed down, since Momoko was part of a team from the west. Kanagi says she's there to help Mitama if she needs it. Kanagi says Mitama must be making good business, but Mitama says most of her customers are first-timers.

Kanagi then asks about the Amane sisters. Mitama says they came to be adjusted. Kanagi says she thinks Tsukasa is avoiding her. Mitama says Kanagi should try to talk to Tsukasa. Kanagi agrees and heads to Tsukasa's house in the Artisan Ward. When she returns home and sees Kanagi, Tsukasa tries to run off. However, Kanagi chases her. Eventually she catches up to Tsukasa and demands to know what's going on. Tsukasa's asks if Kanagi is interested in releasing magical girls from the fate of becoming witches. Kanagi is surprised Tsukasa learned about that. Tsukasa says she can't accept becoming a witch. Kanagi says that Tsukasa chose to become a magical girl, and she is responsible for her choices.

Kanagi says Tsukasa can't renounce her fate, but Tsukasa says there is a way. Tsukasa says there's a group called the Wings of Magius which can save magical girls. She invites Kanagi to join. Kanagi asks if Tsukasa has considered if this group isn't just trying to use her by making false promises. Tsukasa says she trusts, saying she was invited by Tsukuyo, who was invited by Mifuyu Azusa. Kanagi asks if the west is up to something. Tsukasa says it's not about east versus west, it's about saving magical girls. Kanagi says Tsukasa was taken by a pipe dream and calls her pathetic.

Tsukasa says that Kanagi won't change her feelings. Tsukasa says that she and Tsukuyo planned to leave their homes once they graduate high school so they can live together happily. Tsukasa points out that the fate of becoming a witch makes this dream impossible, which is why the sisters went to Magius. Kanagi admits Tsukasa can make her own choices, but asks if she'll be satisfied once she gets what she wants from Magius. Kanagi thinks Magius preys upon magical girls by their weaknesses and can't approve or join. Kanagi says she will protect the magical girls of Kamihama, which includes Tsukasa. However, she says she can't overlook Tsukasa straying from the right path.

Tsukasa says she's probably not the only one, and says all the magical girls of the east want to be freed from becoming a witch. Kanagi says she can't stop that, but she can bring peace to Kamihama. She asks Tsukasa to lend her strength, but Tsukasa says she's too weak. She thanks Kanagi and leaves. Kanagi thinks that people of the east live in a world where they're feared and avoided. Those who become magical girls have it even worse. Kanagi muses that when she became a magical girl she didn't know about becoming a witch. However, she accepts that fate because it was still the result of her choice. However, Kanagi still can't accept the discrimination she gets in Kamihama.

It's shown that the people in west Kamihama have a poor impression of those of the east. In the past, Kanagi wondered how the people of the east could improve that impression. One day Kyubey appeared before her and offered her a contract. Kanagi told him she wanted to change everyone's opinions of Daitou Ward, and that she believes the cause is Kamihama's history. She asked Kyubey to erase the history of Kamihama. Kyubey asked if she's sure about that, saying the change Kanagi could wish for could occur tomorrow, or hundreds of years in the future. Thinking about it, Kanagi agreed that even changing Kamihama's history won't actually change people's opinions of Daitou.

Kanagi decided that if there's something she can improve herself, she wants to know about it. She then made her wish to Kyubey: "I wish to know the reason why everyone hates Daitou". From that wish, she obtained the power to read minds...and also learned there was no reason why people hated Daitou. Kamihama's history and the poor safety of Daitou caused people to hate it without knowing why. Kanagi realized that Kamihama doesn't see individuals, they just see the circumstances around them. This causes a cycle of people getting hurt.

In the present, Kanagi recieves an adjustment from Mitama. Kanagi narrates that the magical girls of the east are all joining the Wings of Magius. She talks with Mitama about it, and Mitama points out the girls from the east are the one who most desire to be saved from their circumstances. Kanagi says she loves Daitou, and wants Kamihama to live in peace and harmony. Kanagi thinks there is only one way to accomplish this: By destroying Kamihama. Kanagi says that when everyone has lost everything, people will be forced to work together and the old differences will vanish.

Kanagi then muses that she doesn't have the power to destroy Kamihama, so all she can do is destroy witches and protect magical girls. Kanagi decides that that she'll do what she can, and if the time comes she'll destroy Kamihama to save Daitou.

Costume Stories

Kanagi Izumi's Costume Stories

(This takes place shortly after *Newbie Maid Carefree Kanagi.)
The manager and head maid look on proudly as the café cheers for Nagi-tan. The head maid wasn't sure that Kanagi would fit in at first, but Kanagi seems to have matured into a full-fledged maid. Since her shift is over, Kanagi takes her leave and bids the two of them good bye. Karin remembers something she was going to show to Kanagi and heads out as well. Karin catches up to Kanagi at the park and shows her the new manga she drew. Since one of the characters is inspired by Kanagi, Karin really wanted her to read it. On the first page, the character Maid Nagitan introduces herself. Her maid job is only a disguise since in truth she fights the evils and injustices of the world. Kanagi points to the page and asks why there's a huge "BOOM!" plastered over the page. Karin explains it's a sound effect like you see in comics and it's supposed to emphasize how awesome the character is. Kanagi nods and keeps reading: Maid Nagitan is on a mission to battle monsters that dwell in an abandoned mansion together with her kouhai. Kanagi asks if the abandoned mansion isn't based on the Mirror Witch's barrier. Karin smiles and nods, explaining she went there personally to draw the background, except she couldn't get the right angles later so the backgrounds are missing from the rest of the pages. In the manga, Maid Nagitan's kouhai, Maid Iroha, is afraid to be left behind. Maid Nagitan tells her she needs to buckle up if she ever wants to be a true maid.

Noticing how the Maid Iroha ends her sentences with "desushii", Kanagi mentions how weird the kouhai acts and speaks. Karin gets a little upset and defensively tells her adding verbal tics is how you make characters interesting and standout. If you mix in a cute catchphrase now and again that really rounds them out and makes them more charming. Kanagi is impressed by how much thought Karin has put into the manga and compliments Karin on her hard work. Karin says it's thanks to being able to take notes from a real life example. Karin flips through the pages as Maids Nagitan and Iroha search for and eventually confront the big bad. The bad guy cackles menacingly as Maid Nagitan stands crying over a badly injured Maid Iroha, who cries out in a mix of almost unintelligible catchphrases and verbal tics. Karin points out how the extra strong monsters can speak in this story and then tells Kanagi the climax is coming up. Kanagi reads the next part, which has the maids cry out for their Madam. The Madam appears and knocks out all the monsters with his Deadly Technique Maid-san Beam, the Madam being an exact copy of the manager from the café. Maid Nagitan decides she has no choice but to use that and unleashes her Leave It To Nagitan Beam on the monster as well. The monster cries out and then dies as the two maids cheer; the comic page is covered in big explosive sound effects. THE END.

Nervously, Karin asks Kanagi what she thinks of it. Kanagi replies that she's not very sure about all that complicated stuff, but she could definitely get a certain feeling from the manga. Karin begs her to tell her what that feeling was. Karin says the feeling was love.

Kanagi is hanging out at with Mitama at her Coordinator shop, but Mitama won’t stop staring at her. When Kanagi asks her what the problem is, Mitama narrows her eyes and tells her that she’s always wearing the same old thing, i.e. her school uniform. Kanagi points out she does wear a maid uniform while at work but Mitama tells her that’s not what she meant. Doesn’t Kanagi have any sense of fashion? Kanagi for her part is fine so long as what she’s wearing matches the situation. Since her uniform is meant to be worn for long periods of time, it keeps her warm enough and is appropriate for formal or casual wear. Mitama sighs and tells her she’s technically right and this time asks her if she wouldn’t like to wear different clothes now and again just for the excitement. Kanagi shrugs and doesn’t really see a point so long as what she’s wearing is comfortable. Mitama just doesn’t get it. She believes that high school girls should look lovely and asks Kanagi if she doesn’t ever year for the thrill of being in a crowd during a sale or opening a grab bag from a shop and seeing what nice things are inside. When Kanagi tells her she’s never even bought a grab bag in her life, Mitama looks surprised and tells her that they’re cheap and often have good things in them. Those grab bags are the secret to fashion. Mitama gets a sudden idea and digs something up before giving it to Kanagi to try on.

Kanagi is hesitant at first but she puts on the clothes that Mitama got for her. Mitama is pleased at how good Kanagi looks in them and tells Kanagi to look in the mirror. Even Kanagi has to admit that the clothes suit her. Mitama smiles and tells Kanagi to give fashion a try more often. Kanagi looks at the clothes and notes that they’re all still brand new. It turns out that Mitama had bought a grab bag and received those clothing items, but they weren’t quite her style so she didn’t know what to do with them. That’s why she was glad to give them away to Kanagi. Kanagi tries to decline but Mitama insists on her keeping them. Since she’ll never wear them it makes sense to give them to Kanagi instead so she can use it to start her fashion wardrobe. Since Mitama paid for the clothes, she tells Kanagi that she can take her out to lunch in exchange although of course Kanagi will have to wear the clothes to their lunch date. Kanagi accepts and thanks Mitama for her generosity. A few days later the two friends go out to eat while looking fashionable.

Showing her perspective during the event Summer Treasure, Kanagi alongside Ui and Kyoko are preparing to cook the fish they have caught while trapped on the desert island. Ui is in charge of taking care of the fish at the bonfire while Kanagi and Kyoko are in charge of opening the raw fish so they can cook them better. Kyoko admits that she likes Kanagi, because it is clear that she is an expert at cooking fish and she doesn't waste food. Kanagi tells Kyoko about her family situation, and how the day before she had caught fish wearing the same suit, and had it cooked in the same way for her family. Kanagi says that Kyoko's words are similar to her father's, saying that she is glad that she learned to catch fish and cook them because it benefited her family.

Kyoko is surprised by everything Kanagi does, and she reveals that despite her young age, she has already learned to cook, wash clothes, and do other household chores so as not to burden her parents with such a workload. Kyoko gets a little sad and Kanagi asks her if she said something that will upset her, admitting that sometimes that happens to her because she is not in sync with other people, but Kyoko tells her that she didn't do anything wrong and that Kanagi is right in her way of thinking, saying that she really can't make mistakes with issues that important. Before the two can talk more, Ui interrupts them saying that the fish is ready. Kanagi thinks about the words "don't make mistakes" and feels that Kyoko must have suffered something very strong to say something like that, so she says that she will take her words as a warning, thinking that it won't matter "what choice she makes in the future."

Kanagi is just finishing the laundry when Sogetsu walks in, asking if he could open a new milk carton, before seeing his old loungewear. Taken aback, he asks why she is washing it when he had plans of throwing it out, as it no longer fit him. Kanagi says that she has decided to wear it, shocking and embarrassing her brother. She tries to reassure him that one’s growth is going smoothly if their clothes get too small. When that doesn’t get through, Kanagi tells him that their family especially needs to be resourceful, and as the eldest child, it is getting harder and harder for her to just discard things, essential or not. Sogetsu acknowledges that his sister’s words are a harsh but undeniable truth, and abruptly rushes out. Kanagi frowns, thinking that his puberty is acting up again. That evening, Sogetsu returns home with a bag. He bluntly gives it to his sister, and upon looking inside, realizes that her brother had gone out and bought her new pajamas, spending all of his month’s budget in the process. Pleasantly surprised, she thanks him, and is quick to put on the new outfit. She turns out to really like it, despite the unfamiliarity of wearing something brand new. Kanagi finally agrees to give her brother’s old pajamas a proper farewell, before Sogetsu then makes a comment that if he ever got a girlfriend, he would be too embarrassed to bring her over, but quickly retracts the statement when his sister asks him about it. Kanagi smiles, and decides to appreciate this change as a sign of growth.

A Magical Girl who ended up playing a vampire in a Halloween party play. She really got into her role, apparently something to do with her feelings about how the dead return on Halloween. Since she uses blood in combat, she focused so tightly on an anemia-fighting diet that her family started worrying about her. She calls herself an immortal vampire.

Doppel Description

CATACOMBE (Catacombe)

The Doppel of dismantlement.
Its form is a hearth lion.
The master of this emotion continually wanders in search of the answer to her mourning. In order to help its master find that answer, this Doppel takes the feelings towards death that are held by visitors lured in by Halloween merriment, and finely dismantles said feelings before serving them to its master. Breaking them down into small pieces makes them no easier to swallow, however, so its master is likely to get indigestion, and continue to distance herself from the answer. When the Doppel tires of dismantlement, it secretly uses the tip of its scythe to carve jack-o’-lanterns and so forth outside of its master’s view.

Doppel Description

CATACOMBE (Catacombe)

The Doppel of dismantlement.
Its form is a soot lion.
The master of this motion patiently waits for her sorrow to be relieved by the destruction that her Doppel bestows. In order to build a fair and equitable paradise in accordance with its master’s will, the Doppel attempts to destroy everything, while simultaneously playing a requiem not unlike an anguished wail. However, its actions only amount to mere dismantlement. Though it can reduce everything around it to smithereens, only hollow cadavers are left behind. And because the Doppel itself doesn’t realize this, it will continue reducing its surroundings to smithereens for as long as equality fails to manifest– thus, it simply rampages until its strength gives out.

Side Story

Kanagi Izumi's (Everlasting Darkness) Side Story

Summary by bigscarythings
Darktama's MGS opens after Arc 2, with Kanagi and Mitama meeting up, discussing a Halloween event for the east-west student conference. Kanagi envisions an event about overcoming the sins of the past and learning not to repeat mistakes. That gets Mitama reflecting on her and Kanagi's dark period - they didn't care if NM succeeded or not, or even whether Kamihama was destroyed, but about creating an opportunity to unite the East and the West. Mitama had lost all hope in her own future, and awaited her death...

Much like Darknagi's MGS, we move into getting the events of Chapter 10 from Mitama's perspective, then moving through time after Arc 2 until we return back to the present day. A lot of it relies on reading Chapter 10 for yourself (but the draft TL is done, so people should go read it if they have the chance!), but for the big choice bits, Mitama struggles with how she both wants to crush everyone who's wronged her, but also...just wanted an apology from them, too. This leads us to the vision in Mitama's 4* card - where she felt like the only way to get that apology was to make everyone fear her. In the end, Mikage's plan saved MitaKana both, but even now, with everything resolved, Mitama...doesn't really know how to go back to normal.

With the fallout of their actions settled, Mitama, like Kanagi, wants to apologize - but where Kanagi's apology focused on the girls of the East, Mitama wants to apologize to everyone. But knowing that she nearly destroyed the things people cherished, or how she almost committed mass slaughter, a simple apology feels very hollow...but all the same, Mitama doesn't know how to make sincere repentance.

That is - until Momoko comes knocking at the door to her shop. With the door locked, Momoko, worried and harried, shouted to be let inside. Once inside, first things first - Momoko asks if Mitama's had lunch. It's late in the afternoon, and Mitama realized she's forgotten. Anticipating this, Momoko brought along some snacks. It gets Mitama even more guilty about how she almost destroyed this...but she thanks Momoko.

Momoko, again, reads Mitama like a (partly) open book - she can tell Mitama is trying to find a way to apologize, and is constantly worrying over that. She asks if there's a way she can help Mitama. Mitama admits that with Momoko (among other Magical Girls) coming in to check on Mitama so often...it sinks in just how horrible Mitama's actions are, and an apology feels even more impossible. She has no idea how to start over... Momoko understands, but tells her she can start over - she just needs to tell everyone else how she feels.

And with that, Momoko starts contacting all the other Magical Girls; Mitama quickly stops her, but Momoko knows Mitama can't do this on her own. Besides, it's in Momoko's nature to stick her nose in things that don't belong - so let Momoko be selfish again this time. After a pause, Mitama thanks and apologizes to Momoko for being such a burden on her; Momoko just says if that's how Mitama feels, then Mitama just ought to work on getting back to her usual self as soon as possible.

Thanks to Momoko's efforts, lots of Magical Girls assemble at Mitama's shop - the only ones who couldn't make it either had plans in place, and sent messages to Mitama instead. And with how faithfully all the magical girls arrived, Mitama is again lost on how to apologize...and says as much. She remarks that she doesn't know how to atone for what she's done, but she can at least say this: "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

After a long silence, Yachiyo speaks up first - saying that this time, Mitama's gone too far. Hinano adds that Mitama should have at least tried communicating with everyone else, but Maria sympathizes, realizing that Mitama must've felt so desperate that she didn't feel like she had time to speak up...

Mitama realizes that with how carefully they're all speaking, that they, too, and trying to figure out how to forgive. But gradually, it comes easier - among the various girls to speak, Nanaka adds that she understands Mitama's urge towards revenge; Meiyui says that Mitama can't change the past, but can change the future; Ria simply sighs and says if Mitama's fine now, then everything else is fine, too; Riko just cries out for Big Sis Mitama and gives her a big hug; and Himika calls Mitama and Kanagi two huge idiots.

After everyone says what they need to say, silence falls over the office again, and Yachiyo, speaking on everyone's behalf, says they all accept her apology. From there, they all talk about everything for a long time. Mitama is relieved and happy that they all accepted her now, but...still the fact remains that she was going to kill them all, and her self-resentment deepens.

From there, Mitama, trying to act like her usual cheerful self, does free Coodinations for everyone, shown in a montage of visitors, from FeliSana to the Azaleas - at one point, Ren notes that Mitama had given her a free Coordination last time, too, and wants to pay for it this time, but Mitama refuses to allow her to do so. Mitama even gives out free candy now, much to Felicia's delight.

But eventually, Momoko visits Mitama again...to apologize. Mitama wonders why, and Momoko explains - Mitama has been doing all her Coordinations for free lately, hasn't she? Mitama says it's her way of apology. But it's not just that - Mitama's been doing a lot of free services, even things like homework help, things she never would've done before. And Mitama seems very sad, too - it gives everyone the feeling that they're bullying her, in a way...

Mitama instantly protests upon hearing that word, but Momoko stresses that this is just the impression people get, given Mitama's behavior when she's doing business. Mitama says she's just trying to get things back to normal. And that cues Momoko's apology - she's sorry for trying to force Mitama back on her feet before she was ready. Mitama insists Momoko has nothing to apologize for - she needed that push in order to aplogize, and now everyone has forgiven her...but Momoko asks, has Mitama forgiven *herself?*

Upon saying that, Mitama finally realizes all the guilt, disgust and loathing she feels towards herself, and how it blinded her and made her behavior disengenuine. Momoko apologizes again, saying Mitama must've felt like the apology was a big setup, but Mitama insists again that's not so - she really was happy that Momoko went the full stretch to do it. Mitama thinks, though, that she may not be able to forgive herself for the rest of her life, even if she spends all her days trying to make amends...

Momoko says she can't do anything to change how Mitama feels about herself, but says that if Mitama wants to make amends, then it's wrong for her to cut herself down/force herself to suffer. Really, no one knows the correct way to atone, let alone for things like this, but...if she wants to make amends, then it's okay for Mitama to let herself be herself again, one tiny bit at a time. Mitama says she can't go back...she can't forgive herself, after all... But, as Momoko asks: does she think she can face Kamihama again?

Mitama absorbs this, silent for a moment, then asks that Momoko give her some time to herself in order to think. Momoko says alright - she'll be back shortly to check on her. Once gone, Mitama finally allows herself to break down, and sobs profusely.

Alone, Mitama reflects on her days as a Coordinator - like the day she got her first customer, and how, over time, more and more magical girls started frequenting her. And not just for Coordinations, but to hang out or join events hosted there. The shop has become irreplaceable to Mitama - and she wants to bring those days back, if only for everyone else's sake.

Later, Mitama tells Kanagi that she's joining the East-West student conference, explaining that she can't change if she remains where she is - by joining a dynamic organization, Mitama can change, too. Besides, she has a lot of event hosting experience under her belt, and with the opportunity to create a place that transcends Kamihama's boundaries, Mitama wants to help.

But that leaves just one thing...she thinks on how she'd wanted to destroy the city and punish everyone, but also to be forgiven...and that she knew what she needed all along - to properly forgive herself, she needs to forgive everyone else, too.

Before anything else, though, Mikage insists that Mitama come home today. While Mitama has skipped out on coming home before, it's the first time she hasn't been home in ages - while it's awkward to come home like this, it'll only be even more awkward if she keeps putting it off, so Mikage's lugging her home.

It takes her back to what happened after Mizuna - while her parents didn't blame Mitama one bit for what happened, she felt like they must've had a hard time worrying about her and dealing with her... On her way home with Mikage, she tries to come up with a story about how she'd tried to run away from home, in an attempt to dodge getting reamed at or having to explain magical girls, but...instead of what she expects, she gets her parents fussing over her, relieved that she's finally returned. And they apologize to her, too.

Mitama doesn't understand why - she, after all, was the one who'd abandoned them. But her parents talk about Mizuna, how Mitama must have been in serious pain over it... Silently, Mitama notes how it's not the first time her parents have apologized to her. In the past, though, Mitama had blown it off cheerfully - but deep down, wondered, "Why don't you guys understand me?" For instance, back when Mitama was expelled from school, her parents had gone around apologizing to the neighbors of Daito, in order to smoothen things over for Mitama - but all Mitama saw was that she herself was a victim of Mizuna, and yet her parents were apologizing on her behalf? To her, that made it seem like she was the one at fault...

But, having spoken about this with Kanagi, Mitama has come to understand now - that even though this wasn't Mitama's fault, her parents had to apologize first to make it easier for the other person to accept Mitama again - to make it so that other people won't hurt Mitama anymore.

Mitama's parents seem to understand this was what had pained Mitama, and aplogize for it - while their intentions were to protect Mitama, they had actually hurt her in turn. Rather than kowtowing to others, they should have supported Mitama. They should have told Mitama how they felt, even though they felt like words wouldn't be enough.

It all clicks for Mitama now - that her parents were apologizing to Mitama in order to open the door for her. They reflected on their own mistakes and tried to show their sincere regret and gratitude. For the first time in ages, Mitama calls her parents, "Mama...Papa..." And she feels again how upon hearing their apology, she at once wanted to punish and rub their pain in, and also to forgive them and let go.

So Mitama finally talks about her feelings, putting them in words - and says she understands now. All this time, they were all just doing their best with what they had. And that's enough. With that - Mitama's heart feels a little lighter, and she wants her parents to feel alleviated, too. She doesn't want them to be trapped in the past anymore, but to forgive each other and move forward. After much crying and finally some laughs, they send Mitama off to have a hot bath - afterwards, they'll have a big dinner with Mitama's favorite foods.

In the shower, Mitama reazlis how long it's been since she's spoken with her family or had a relaxing bath...and cries again. As her tears flow away, so does some of her self-hatred, sadness, and anger...

Back in the present, Mitama reflects some more - hoping that the Mizuna girl who had betrayed her, who came to apologize to her, can now live her life to the fullest without erring again. While Mitama still can't forgive herself...she'll keep trying to make amends until the day comes where she can tell herself that she's done enough. She and Kanagi observe that despite their mistakes, they're still alive - and thus, they have the chance to atone.

Back then, the only future they saw was one that ended in fire, but now a different answer lays before them. The past hasn't changed, but the path foward certainly has. Kanagi says, with both of their power..no, with *everyone's* power, they'll bring equality to Kamihama. And that brings them back to discussing the conference.

Mitama says she's already got some ideas - a sports festival, with lots of food stalls! They'll end things with a romantic night of dancing by a bonfire...but Kanagi cottons onto that "romance" aspect, chuckling about how it's very much like Mitama to come up with something like that. But Mitama points out, doesn't Kanagi's little brother have a sweetheart now?

Kanagi is flummoxed, Mitama teases Kanagi a bit about how clueless she is, but Kanagi observes that even kids these days find love in the air... Mitama says, well, when that day comes, they'll have to figure out if that special someone is right for Mikage...but they mustn't get too ahead of themselves. For now, they just have to take their future one step at a time, at their own pace.

Powers and Abilities

In Chapter 7, Section 10 Yachiyo explains that Kanagi's personal magic lets her read minds. However Kanagi has to transform and be close to do so.

Etymology

  • The characters of her last name mean "harmony" (和) and "fountain" (泉) respectively.
  • The characters of her first name mean "ten" (十), "seven" (七) and "night" (夜) respectively.

Trivia

  • Kanagi first appeared in Tsukasa Amane's side story, where she urged her to head to a shrine where she met her "doppelganger", Tsukuyo Amane.
  • The appearance of Kanagi's doppel is based off the Lion Dance, a traditional form of dancing in a costume in Asian countries.
  • According to the design note, the Doppel's weapons are bronze swords. They are probably the same as those used mainly for ritual purposes in ancient Japan.
  • The description of Kanagi's doppel is a reference to "The Cat Office, a short story by Kenji Miyazawa. For other references to his work, see Kenji Miyazawa and Magia Record.
    • The story is about a cat who works at an office with other cats (as if they were humans). Since the cat gets cold easily he sleeps in the fireplace. This causes him to be covered in soot, and so he is known in the story as the "soot cat". His co-worker cats look down on him for this, and ultimately bully the soot cat in the workplace. In the end of the story a lion, implied to be the boss of the cats, secretly observes the workers and reveals himself. He then declares that the office is shut down. The last line of the story is the narrator saying "I half-agree with the lion." (ぼくは半分獅子に同感です.)
  • Magia Archive states that another influence for her doppel was Ryoumen Sukuna, a supernatural being with two faces, four legs and four arms. His depiction in the Nihon Shoki (the second oldest Japanese history book known, created as a gift to the ruling empress) shows him as a prideful and brutal despot who was defeated by the imperial court's might, bringing civilization to his former territory. But local folklore instead shows him as a benevolent ruler who fought to protect the land from invasion, to the point of sometimes being worshipped or considered an incarnation of the boddhitsava Kannon. One of his faces represents his strength and fierceness, the other his kindness.
  • Her "maid name" at her cafe is Maid Nagitan.
