A cool-headed Magical Girl from medieval Italy who uses shadow magic. In the midst of the Hundred Years' War, she fights alongside Tart and the French army to save France. Though she would never speak of it, she is said to be descended from a famous soldier.

Doppel Description

Obscurite, Riz's doppel

The Doppel of obsession. Its form is a shadow. The master of this Doppel feels deep sympathy for others, even at the most dire of times. Where there is light, there is dark. This is providence. But it is also providence that those who are blanketed in shadow will never have light shined upon them. This is a Doppel that stands beside the hero as their shadow, surrounded by their dazzling brilliance. It is the elusive shadow itself, and yet, it is exactly what makes the light shine so brightly. The two are connected by an unbreakable bond.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

Riz fights off a witch within the dreamworld of France. As she strikes a staggering blow to the witch, she calls out to Tart to use her magic to deal the final blow. Tart worries that Riz will be hurt, but Riz urges her to hurry and give it all she has. Tart destroys it with her "La Lumiere" as Cube congratulates Tart on a job well done. Riz appears behind Tart, having manipulated the shadows with her magic to move behind her and avoid the attack. As the barrier disappears, the girls find they have been separated from the battalion while they were inside. With no idea as to where they may be, they decide to walk until they reach a town.

As they travel through the night, they're unable to find even so much as a road. Suddenly, they sense magic nearby and are blinded by a flash of light. The girls are bewildered to find it is suddenly the middle of the day and they are in the middle of Domrémy, the hometown of Tart. Both Cube and Riz even recognize the forest where they first met Tart as well as the church that Tart and her sister Catherine would attend. Everything is exactly the same as when Catherine was still alive. Both Riz and Tart find this last detail odd, as the village was attacked and pillaged on the day Catherine died. They head to the cemetery in search of Catherine's grave, but they become overwhelmed by some kind of magic that searches through their minds.

A flashblack plays from when Riz and Cube were heading towards the village in order to meet Tart for the first time. Riz was still searching for a true hero and Tart had not contracted yet. Riz recognizes it as her memories as the flashback continues, this time showing Catherine asking Riz for sword lessons. She begs the memories to stop as they show the day the village was attacked and Catherine died protecting Tart. Tart looks away, tears in her eyes as she tells Riz what had happened, full of guilt that she couldn't protect her younger sister. She finally agrees to become a magical girl and contracts with Cube. Light begins to rain down from the sky, as she vows to bring light to all of France and Riz vows to become the shadow to that light, protect Tart from anything.

Riz finally awakens with Cube watching over her. He shows her where Tart is laying fast asleep nearby and tells her it looked like she was having a nightmare. The two had passed out for a short while, but both seemed unharmed. Riz explains she had been forced to view her most bitter memories, even against her will. They both turn and wonder if Tart is okay, but it seems Tart is sleeping peacefully. Cube finds the town suspicious, especially when its appearance coincided with a strong magical reaction. Riz agrees and decides to search the town over, asking Cube to keep watch on Tart as she explores.

Despite searching every part of town, nothing was amiss. As Riz searched, she kept being confronted by memories of the past: the field where they chased sheep, the area where she taught them swordplay. She realizes the only place she hasn't checked was the area outside of town, so she heads to the main road. As she walks down the road, she suddenly finds herself back where she started. She tries several times more, but each time she returns to Domrémy rather than leaving it. She suspects what it may be, and tests this theory by attacking the air in front of her. For a split second the woods at night appear before Domrémy reappears once more. Riz's suspicions were correct: they are trapped inside a Witch's barrier. She returns to Cube and tells him what's happening. They realize the Witch is targeting Riz by reading her memories, and constructed the village just as Riz remembered it. Before they can formulate a plan, the Witch attacks Riz once more and conjures another memory for Riz to watch. She remembers the night she asked Cube to accompany her on her search for a true hero. Memories of her search with Cube for a true hero appear and disappear before her. Countless meetings and partings with countless Magical Girls she fought alongside and couldn't protect. Riz had wished to become the shadow from which a true hero would spring, so she herself could never become that true hero she sought for. She collapses under the weight of her tears and regrets, the dark thought that it was her fault these girls succumbed to such dark fates consuming her.

Riz wakes up once more with Cube keeping watch over both girls. She tells him about the memories she saw this time, the memories of their journey together before they met Tart. Cube listens, and tells her to think of those girls in a different light: each girl she met was a different thread of destiny that weaved together within Riz. It was Riz's very existence that helped give rise to the strongest Magical Girl, Tart. If Riz was really the reason that Tart was able to contract and become the strongest Magical Girl, then the other girls' sacrifices weren't in vain. While the idea comforts Riz, she acknowledges it would do little to comfort the dead Magical Girls of her past. Riz was forced to watch them die or become witches in front of her before having to kill them off herself. But despite the wear from her memories, Riz has confirmed that the Witch attacks by using regret as well as the identity of the Witch: one of her former Magical Girl partners. Both her and Cube were there when she finally succumbed to her grief and became a Witch. She had immediately attacked Riz's mind by dragging up Riz's feelings of regret. As Riz lay on the ground unconscious, Cube called out to her in an attempt to wake her up before she died. Riz was just able to get up. Since her initial attack was unsuccessful, the Witch then tried a direct attack.

In the present, Riz and Cube both recall that particular day and ready themselves for a direct attack from the Witch. Riz vows once more to do anything she can to protect Tart, the true light of hope, even if it means staining her hands further with sin. Blow after blow strikes Riz, but she manages to hold out. Riz fights back with her shadows and is able to defeat the Witch once and for all. As the labyrinth dissipates, Riz and Cube find themselves back in the dark woods they were lost in originally. Tart finally awakens and greets Riz and Cube. Riz checks to make sure that Tart is okay when they hear a voice calling out to them. It seems Melissa and some of the soldiers had gone in search of the two girls and had been able to finally find them. The girls all reunited back at camp, happy to be safe and sound.

Tart tells Melissa they had been trapped within a Witch's barrier as Cube describes how Riz had defeated the Witch with ease once she recognized it as a Witch she'd fought before. Riz finds the coincidence suspicious, since Iroha and Yachiyo had also been surprised to find a Witch they had fought before also. Someone or something was recreating enemies from their past. Riz then asks Tart if she remembered Domrémy or anything else before that. Tart smiles and says she remembers everything up to the point where they looked for Catherine's grave. After that all she remembers is a long dream filled with happy and nostalgic memories. Cube wonders if Tart is incapable of feeling regret. Despite having sad memories, Tart doesn't regret them one bit because she knows she will liberate her country and will never let go of her vow to Catherine. Riz knows she's found the last light of hope.
