A Witch Girl (魔女っ子 Majokko)[1] is a Witch who has returned to the world through Nazukasokotsune. A Witch Girl's soul is contained within a Melt Gem rather than a Soul Gem.[2] Only a Magical Girl with attachment to the world can pass from the Law of Cycles to Nazukasokotsune and return to the world. Although Witch Girls can take a form of a human, their nominal form is the one of a Witch.[3]

Appearance

Witch Girls designed by Aoki Ume mostly look quite similar to regular Magical Girls, but they have several features distinguishing them: their pupils are white, they wear black undershirts with their school uniforms,[4] their untransformed forms' nail markings are black, and likely because they have Melt Gems instead of Soul Gems, they lack gemstones both on their untransformed forms' rings and their transformed costumes.[observed]

Melt Gem

A Melt Gem (メルトジェム) is an object used by Witch Girls. As their original Magical Girl selves' Soul Gem is already broken when they're retrieved by Law of Cycles, the Melt Gem is formed as a cage to contain the soul of a Witch Girl.[2]

Weapons

Witch Girls utilize a Witch Girl Stick (魔女っ子ステック majokko sutekku).[5] The stick consists of "Wand Mode" as the common mode, and alternative modes, such as "Mace Mode", or "Baton Mode", unique to each Witch Girls.[5][observed]

Concept

During the early screenplay meeting for Walpurgisnacht: Rising, Akiyuki Shinbo believed that he could use Gekidan Inu Curry's Nazukasokotsune idea to introduce the concept of the "Witch Girl" to the series.[1]

Shinbo drew the inspiration for Witch Girl from Toei Animation's Majokko series (e.g. Sally the Witch, The Secret of Akko-chan, etc.) and had made up a distinction between Witch Girl and Magical Girl for himself since even before the development of Walpurgisnacht: Rising, such as "Witch Girl can fly if given a broom, but Magical Girl cannot. Any Magical Girl's flying scenes you've seen are just them jumping."[4]

Witch Girls were initially designed by Gekidan Inu Curry as a rough draft but later redesigned by Aoki Ume.[1]

Speculation

The theories below have not been proven yet.

Please keep in mind that they are fanmade theories, and not official material.

  • As a mechanism, the Witch Girl is similar to that of a Doppel in Magia Record, although coming from the opposite side of the equation: while a Witch Girl is a Witch that takes the shape of a Magical Girl, a Doppel is a Magical Girl that borrows the power of her own Witch. However, as the mechanism and settings behind Witch Girl predates Magia Record by many years, it is possible that Witch Girl serve as an in-universe basis for what became Doppel in Magia Record (i.e., as an evidence that such concept is acceptable in-universe).

Trivia

  • Although Witch Girls (魔女っ子 Majokko) exist as a character setting in Walpurgisnacht: Rising, the term was never once mentioned in the movie. The term does show up everywhere in the setting materials and in interviews.
