Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: —Walpurgisnacht: Rising— (劇場版 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ〈ワルプルギスの廻天〉 Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica〈Walpurgis no Kaiten〉, lit. Magical Girl Madoka Magica The Movie〈The Rotation of Walpurgis〉) is a movie sequel to Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion[1]. The project was officially announced on April 25th, 2021 during the Madoka 10th Anniversary event. More information was revealed during the Aniplex Online Fest 2023 on September 10th, 2023, which included a new trailer and an approximated release date of Winter 2024. On August 16th, 2024, it was announced that the movie had been delayed to Winter 2025[2]. On July 15th, 2025, it was announced that the movie had been further delayed to February 2026.[3] On January 23rd, 2026, it was announced again that the movie will be delayed to an unspecified date, to be announced in February.[4][5] On February 27th, 2026, it was announced that the movie will be released on August 28th, 2026.[6]

Development

Script

Gen Urobuchi started working on the script about a year after Rebellion, and right after his screenplay work on Kamen Rider Gaim, sometimes between 2014 and 2015.[7][8] Urobuchi ran out of ideas for the series after Rebellion, and asked Gekidan Inu Curry if they had any ideas. Inu Curry gave Urobuchi a "stack of documents" outlining idea sketch for the series (colloquially referred to as "Inu Curry's Note"), such as how the world looks like after Rebellion, among other lores and materials. Urobuchi then used these ideas as a base for his first draft of the script.[7] During the writing, the production team explored the possibility of making Walpurgisnacht Rising a two-part movie, and Urobuchi made a few additions due to that. Although they later decided on doing Walpurgisnacht Rising as a single-part movie, those additions remained in the final script.[7]

Since the original script was written from Homura's perspective, Akiyuki Shinbo felt Madoka's presence was too weak in the original script.[9] In 2015, he asked Urobuchi to rewrite the script from Madoka's perspective, as Rebellion was already about Homura, and he wanted the new film to be about Madoka[10]. Urobuchi couldn't find a time to do so, and offered the production team to revise his script.[9] The production team spent the next few years rewriting the script[9], but ultimately decided to go with Urobuchi's original script, slightly before Madoka 10th Anniversary in 2021.[9] Urobuchi was surprised to hear they went with the original script, as it was done several years before Magia Record.[11] The final script remained mostly unchanged from the original for the first half, but the latter half received a substantial revision, especially with Madoka's presence, and character's backstory.[9] Urobuchi jokingly says the original revision was "rather blunt", because he wrote it right after Kamen Rider Gaim and it would have been quite a terrible story to release it as-is.[9]

Production

Tomohiro Furukawa was invited to write a storyboard for the show[11] after Shaft's president, Mitsutoshi Kubota, saw his work on Revue Starlight: The Movie.[10] Kazuki Kawata was asked to join Tomohiro Furukawa after Furukawa asked Shaft to bring "someone young" to help him sketch out ideas, similar to what he did with Goodbye, Lara's director, Takushi Koide, when he was co-directing Revue Starlight.[12]

Pre-release

Walpurgisnacht Rising was announced during the Anniversary Stage as part of the Madoka 10th Anniversary event. The first teaser showed the return of the main staff; Akiyuki Shinbo as Chief Director[13], Gen Urobuchi as a scriptwriter[13], Aoki Ume as an original character designer[13], Shaft as animation production[13], Junichiro Taniguchi as a character designer[13], Gekidan Inu Curry as a designer of the parallel world[13], and music by Yuki Kajiura[13].

The first trailer was revealed as an ending to the Aniplex Online Fest 2023 and featured the first animation reveal along with a new key visual and the Winter 2024 release date. The trailer also revealed that Yukihiro Miyamoto will return as a director[13], resuming his position from Rebellion[14]. On August 16, 2024 it was revealed on the official Madoka Magica X (Twitter) account that that movie was delayed due to production circumstances.[2] The second trailer was released during Aniplex Online Fest 2024 revealing the new release date of winter 2025.

On October 18th, 2024, the official website revealed that there will be another version of the 2nd trailer called "Trailer 2: Side Homura" to be screened after the screening of "Revival Screening" of Rebellion from October 25th to October 31st.[15] The trailer was uploaded to YouTube after Revival Screening ended, on November 1st, 2024. With the release of the July 15th, 2025 trailer, the movie's release date was pushed further back to February 2026 from the previously announced Winter 2025 date. On January 23rd, 2026, the official website revealed that the movie had been further delayed.

On February 27th, 2026, the new Japanese release date has been announced to be August 28th, 2026. As of the release of the Main Trailer on the AniplexUSA YouTube channel on July 2nd, 2026, the release date for the English film in any variant has not yet been set.[16]
