Summary

A Magical Girl who moonlights as a fashion model. Often dubbed one of Kamihama's foremost beauties, she can't stand the thought of not having the spotlight, so she always puts herself at the front of anything she's involved in. She acts confident, but from a bystander's perspective she's a little incompetent.

Doppel Description

Heide Jekyll, Ria's doppel

The Doppel of charisma. Its form is a starfish. This master of this emotion longs to shine like the sun and be the center of attention. Sympathizing with this desire for recognition, the doppel, seeking the highest beauty of the master’s longing, succeeds in creating a transparent body that encompasses a star-like molecular arrangement structure that replaces the master’s body. The luminous entity reaches out its tentacles in all directions to attract admirers of the new body, forcing it to gain devotees. If you try to escape, you will be skewered, but if you just say it’s cute, it will let you go.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

The story begins with a documentary on Ria. The narrator asks if it's hard being such a natural beauty that the crowds literally part before her. Ria responds that it has always been that way for her since she was young, so she has no idea the level of her popularity. But it does have its challenges. Despite the constant attention she gets, this only encourages Ria to be more beautiful, not just physically but as a person. The narrator notes she is as humble as she is graceful and Ria turns to head to school. Manaka Kurumi calls her attention and tells her there's something about her face.

Ria becomes worried, and flashes back to when she first made a contract with Kyubey. Ria doesn't believe in what is happening and after much debate, she wishes to become a natural beauty. Back in the present, Manaka asks if Ria is okay since her face seems so pale. She asked if she wouldn't rather reschedule the food tasting for some other time, but Ria's stomach growls as she agrees to go to the food tasting after all. Manaka chuckles at the sound of her healthy appetite.

At Walnuts, Manaka thanks Ria for her time. Ria remembers when she first met Manaka, who was mesmerized by her natural beauty and became inspired to make an amazing meal for her. Manaka corrects Ria's trip down memory lane by reminding her that Ria had been ready to collapse from hunger after following a dangerous fad diet, prompting Manaka to come to her rescue. Manaka tries out the new menu item and finds it to be incredibly delicious. Manaka beams with pride as she brags about becoming the best chef in the world one day. Ria wonders if she could ever be the absolute best at something, the way Manaka is as she chows down on her favorite meal of rice omelet.

Unlike Manaka who worked hard at her talent, Ria had never stood a chance at being the absolute best. Even before her wish, although she wasn't ugly, she wasn't the most beautiful either. Ria asks Manaka to describe the rice omelet from the rival restaurant across the street. Manaka calls it just okay, and mediocre and mentally Ria agrees with the description as it applies to herself before she contracted. Manaka believes that hard work and perseverance can make a difference, but inside Ria knows that the head chef of the restaurant is trying his best. She remembers trying her best to be beautiful when she would style her hair, or change her make-up. But despite her best efforts, she would never be anywhere near the top. She believes that there are some things that can never be overcome no matter how hard you work at it.

Outside the restaurant, a small mob of Ria's followers begins to amass. Manaka pities Ria that she has to deal with so much attention, but then she's sure that Ria is used to the attention since she was a kid. Ria awkwardly agrees. Because she wished to be a "natural" beauty, her wish made it so that everything was as if though she had been beautiful since the day she was born. The wish had rewritten her past as well as her present.

The documentary continues once more as the narrator compares Ria's beauty to the sculpted works of Michelangelo. As the usual crowd of followers mob each other for Ria's attention, a man is able to push his way past the crowd to talk to Ria. He's the chief editor for Vanity Fine, the fashion magazine. Ria's is over thrilled to be making a huge debut, but pretends to be swamped with other offers. She arranges to call the editor back when she has more time as school is about to begin.

Of course, Ria also worked diligently to fulfill her contract as a magical girl. She took her responsibilities seriously, sometimes too seriously for the other girls who found her giving orders like a general in battle a bit much at times. Ria mentally praises herself for her graceful fighting style just as she readies herself to deliver the final blow. But Tsuruno Yui jumps in and finishes off the witch herself. Konomi Haruna and Manaka praise Tsuruno's fighting abilities, but Ria is upset that Tsuruno had stolen the spotlight from her final attack. Manaka doesn't see what the big deal is, as long as the witch is defeated. Ria tries to explain that the final blow is the big finale and she turns to Tsuruno to scold her for jumping in after Ria declared out loud that she was going to land the finishing blow. Ria continues to work herself up until Manaka offers her an extra-large serving of rice omelet to cool her down.

Another time, Ria bumps into Konomi once more. This time she's hunting witches with Manaka and Kako Natsume. Kako praises her beauty but both Konomi and Kako think that Ria is more than a little weird. Ria boasts that people can't help complimenting her and urges Kako to continue her praise. Manaka calls her out on her narcissism and reminds her they need to dispatch of the witch they found. Ria is pleased that she found a docile group that will follow her orders in battle. The girls fight off the witch, and Ria yells out a cheesy one-liner as she attempts to land the killing blow. But the witch survives the attack as Manaka asks Ria about her weak special attack. Ria scoffs and readies to fight the witch "for reals" this time as Yachiyo Nanami appears.

Ria recognizes her instantly as the model for Vanity Fine, having grown up admiring her. She tells the others that she recognizes Yachiyo as a model for the magazine that is doing a big article on her. The girls are amazed at Yachiyo's beauty, which causes Ria to become a bit jealous and remind them she's in charge of the attack on the witch. Ria attempts her special move once more but to no effect. Yachiyo then rushes in and lands a staggering blow on the witch, calling out to the others to follow up with an attack. Ria is taken aback at the sudden change in leadership as Yachiyo finishes the witch off for good. Yachiyo is thankful no one is injured as she leaves, but Ria is so upset with Yachiyo that she accidently transmits her angry thoughts to the others via telepathy.

The documentary that Ria imagines continues, as she continues to pretend they are filming a documentary about her on her way to school. She talks about how her favorite food is Japanese food, and how she'd often help her mother prepare the snow peas in her dishes. Manaka pipes in about how the easiest way to shell them is to pull from the end opposite the stem. Ria realizes she had been preparing them the wrong way this whole time as she turns to find Manaka standing beside her. Manaka had pulled Ria back into the real world when she saw her fantasizing and mumbling to herself. She asks for Ria's help in defeating a witch she found. It turns out this witch showed up to her restaurant yesterday but for some reason it didn't trigger her soul gem. Ria is reluctant to help, but Manaka tells her she won't be able to enjoy the secret menu item at her restaurant if she doesn't help which just so happens to be an extra large order of rice omelet. Ria calls it bribery, but Manaka soothes her by telling Ria she knows she would never turn down a person in need since she is so beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. Ria relents and agrees to help with the patrol.

After searching for some time, the girls find nothing. Manaka thanks her as they decide to head back to the restaurant. Ria asks for onion gratin soup to go with her rice omelet and Manaka can't believe her lack of manners. As the two bicker, they suddenly find themselves in a witch's labyrinth. The two girls quickly transform and take on the witch. AS they're fighting, Yachiyo appears once more and is surprised to find the two of them already there. Ria has a plan and decides to make the witch battle a contest to see who really holds the spotlight. Yachiyo doesn't know what she's going on about as Ria jumps in head first against the witch. Yachiyo and Manaka can only stand and watch from the sideline as Ria attacks while spouting cheesy one-liners and praising herself mentally. She unleashes her Bella Spina attack on the witch, believing it defeated. But the witch appears once more and attacks the girls. Yachiyo calls out for her to watch out as Yachiyo delivers the killing blow.

Back outside, Ria is upset that Yachiyo took the spotlight from her when she delivered the final hit. Manaka tells Ria she should be thinking Yachiyo for helping them from a tough situation instead of complaining. Ria turns and formally declares Yachiyo to be her official rival. Yachiyo still doesn't know what she's going on about as Manaka dies of embarrassment.

At the mall, Ria asks Manaka to tag along with her as a bodyguard while she goes to buy a magazine. She's even wearing sunglasses to disguise herself since she doesn't want to be seen buying the magazine that has her article in it. Manaka thinks she already does stuff that's more embarrassing than that. Inside the magazine, there's a single page with Ria's photos on it. As Manaka flips through the magazine, she finds that there's an 8 page article on Yachiyo wearing different outfits. Ria gets upset, believing that Yachiyo did it on purpose to show her up in her magazine debut. She becomes so upset, she tears the magazine in half, prompting the clerk to charge her for it.

Costume Stories

Winter Outfit

It is time for the annual Valentine’s Day Acorn/Walnut Wars, where two popular seasonal chocolates are put to the test to see which is best, both teams being led by passionate women from all over Kamihama city! The first team to get five major votes from the nine city districts will be declared the winner, and each team will be led by a representative. For Team Acorn, it is none other than Yachiyo herself. As for Team Walnut, they initially asked Sayuki to take the role, but she ended up declining due to preferring Team Acorn better. Luckily, the team found their true representative, Ria Ami, which has now turned this already intense competition, into a showdown between two of Bibi Fashion’s very own models!

At school, Mayu expresses her excitement for Ria’s involvement in the highly anticipated event. Ria is full of confidence that she will defeat her arch rival, but Manaka reminds her that she only got the role because Sayuki backed out. Annoyed, Ria claims that her and Sayuki are hardly comparable, and besides, the idea of two fashion models butting heads is truly something to behold. Despite Yachiyo’s popularity advantage, Ria is determined to use this opportunity to increase her own fame as well, especially with Mayu and Manaka becoming her assistants for the campaign.

Later at the coordinator’s shop, Mitama is informed about the event, and is asked if anyone she knows of will be coming to help Team Walnut, because although the trio already told their peers in school, they need to go further if they want a fighting chance. Mitama is also asked about what side she is on, but she stays true to her profession, and claims to not have a preference. Just then, there’s a knock at the door, and Yukika comes in. Even though she is from the same school, the trio take the opportunity to try recruiting her, only to find out she is an Acorn fan. Luckily, the disappointment doesn’t last long, as Kanoko is soon to follow, but the trio’s hopes are dashed just as quickly. Unlike Yukika, Kanoko reveals that she isn’t into either team, instead leaning towards chocolate mushrooms, prompting a surprised Ria to ask if there is a secret faction she should know about.

Since promotion was going to be harder than expected, the girls move on to plan B. Ria slips on a new seasonal outfit, and decides to start off the team’s public promotions with a photoshoot. Their second stop, is handing out candy samples to children in a Shinsei mall. This course of action, thanks to a landslide of Acorn votes, causes Manaka to admit that this feels more like an election than a mere contest. Fortunately, their first event had gone smoothly, with Ria even getting to meet a few fans of hers, but they were just getting started.

Once they had finished after a long day, the three find Yachiyo also getting a photoshoot. Manaka and Mayu were hoping to observe the event undetected, but Ria believed that all she had to do was put on some sunglasses. The latter tries to justify her approach by saying that her companions are also curious, with Manaka denying such claims. Mayu is initially quiet, but she soon points out that Ria tends to walk and pose a lot like Yachiyo does.

Overhearing this, Ria silently looks back on her own past before contracting. She always saw Yachiyo as the most beautiful woman in the world, and every day from her room, would practice copying all of her moves on TV. Even now, Ria was in awe realizing that she would soon directly face off against the person she thought so highly of.

Later, the TV program does a progress update, with just one day left before Valentine’s. Both teams have successfully earned four votes from the districts, with only the Chuo ward still needing to decide. Both teams are briefly interviewed about what they have done in order to steal the competition. Manaka and Mayu are feeling nervous about the final showdown, but Ria’s unwavering spirits keep them focused.

The next morning, Ria is up bright and early for the team’s last event before the deadline. While on her way, hyping herself up at the idea of defeating Yachiyo, Ria comes across a middle aged man that has received a witch’s kiss, and was nearing the labyrinth’s entrance. Despite the intensity of the event, Ria drops everything, and swiftly takes down the disruptive witch.

Once that’s over with, she checks up on the man, who was unconscious, but luckily unharmed. However, he did look awfully pale, so Ria decided to call and wait for an ambulance. By the time help arrives, the man wakes up disoriented, and is taken away by paramedics. Ria’s relief is short lived, as she gets an urgent message telling her that the event has already started.

Ria rushes over, and apologizes for being late. Everyone is relieved, worried that something bad had happened to her. Fortunately, there was a mascot show currently taking place, which allowed Ria enough time to get ready before her appearance.

After the event, with children cheering for Team Walnut, Ria and the others are whisked away to the next venue, as there were only two hours left to bring in more votes. When time was up, the girls are praised for their efforts, with the results expected to be announced in two and a half hours. The girls are treated for lunch, where Ria tells Manaka and Mayu about the witch, and worries that she had broken the team’s trust by being an hour late. Mayu assures her that everyone was just worried, and that she had never once been late up until that point. Manaka also adds on, stating that if it weren’t for her, Team Walnut would have no chance against Yachiyo alone. Ria is surprised to get a genuine compliment from Manaka, though she is quick to claim otherwise. So, if they were to ultimately lose, the witch was the one to blame.

When the finale of the competition arrives, people crowd around a stage, and with much excitement, the results are revealed. The winner of Chuo ward’s vote, and the overall campaign is…

Team Acorn!

But it’s not over yet, the crowd gasps as Team Walnut had gained the most popularity to make up for the lost vote. Therefore, it will be up to the fan representatives to decide the victor. Manaka proudly proclaims that she predicted this turn of events, as although rare, it has happened before. The fan representatives cast their votes in, but they end up tied. Now, the head judge is the only one left that can decide how this all ends, but it seems like he’s running late…

Until he comes in, after being released from the hospital. Ria realizes that the head judge was the man she saved earlier, who just believes he passed out due to not having breakfast. Because of how Ria risked her chances of winning in order to help him, the head judge declares the true winner of this year’s competition to be Team Walnut!

Cheers erupt as Ria is momentarily in shock, even when Yachiyo humbly accepts her loss and congrats her opponent.

The show ends with the two team representatives exchanging chocolates in a peaceful act of sportsmanship. As Ria trades her chocolates and receives Yachiyo’s homemade ones, she has trouble fully grasping that she was able to come close to Yachiyo’s status, let alone rise above her. Believing that she is dreaming, Ria thanks her idol with tears in her eyes, and Yachiyo shares her hopes for them to continue being model rivals, and with it now being personal, Ria is more than happy to accept those terms!

Manaka smiles from the crowd, knowing that Ria had a heart of gold after all.

At the restaurant, the girls celebrate their victory while watching the results on TV. Mayu marvels over how the last segment was so popular, that people outside of Kamihama were likely to see it. Manaka comments that Ria went from Ms. Japan to Ms. Universe, as the latter relishes in her newfound stardom. The program wraps up by recapping the heated Acorn/Walnut Wars, with the winner being the one and only…

“Riko Ami”

Ria has a delayed reaction to the mistake, and loudly calls it out in agitation.
Swimsuit

Due to the previous day's events, Ria unfortunately couldn't show off her new swimsuit, and she believes that people should associate swimsuits and summer in general with her. Today is her big chance, as the most athletic student will be given the grand title of "Summer Queen". Manaka finds Ria boasting to herself, with Mayu and Sayuki giving her even more encouragement. Ria then confirms Tsumugi's question, revealing that she will be participating in all of the events that day. When the time comes, Ria breezes through long-distance swimming, beach flag, and beach tennis. During the tennis match, Tsukuyo is relieved that she lost earlier and didn't have to face Ria, while Mayu points out that Manaka hasn't changed from her school uniform. The final event had arrived, which just so happened to be, watermelon splitting. Ria watches Asuka in deep concentration in preparation, and knows that she will be have to give it her all, especially considering that she has a fresh grudge against watermelons, and vows to exact revenge with a hollering laugh. The other girls cheer her on, with Kanoko being in her mascot-like costume. Blindfolded and ready to go, Ria tries to follow the voices of her friends, but begins to wander away. Ria suddenly hears Asuka strike her watermelon, and decides that it's time to lock in. She has Mayu alone guide her straight to the waiting watermelon, where after a short internal monologue, Ria strikes down and cuts it in half like butter. Despite losing the watermelon event, Ria still had enough points from the other events to be crowned "Summer Queen" by Yukika, representing the student council.

As the sun sets, Ria stands proudly on a rock and laughs in triumph over the sea, claiming that this was the most natural outcome.

Etymology

  • The characters in her last name mean "corner" (阿) and "look" (見) respectively.
  • The characters of her first name mean "jasmine" (莉) and "love" (愛) respectively.

Trivia

  • Her Doppel's name is a reference to Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, in which an upstanding scientist (Dr. Jekyll) creates a serum that transforms him into an ugly alter-ego (Mr. Hyde) that enacts all of Jekyll's suppressed evil desires and behaviors.
    • This correlates with Ria's wish but in reverse, Ria was a normal girl who made a wish to become a beautiful girl.
  • There are many noticable features regarding Ria's Doppel - including the fact that Ria disappears when it's summoned.
    • Her Doppel's summmoning animation and design do not match with the one datamined and leaked in 2018, in which Ria summoned a pair of intertwining ribbons.
    • Ria's Doppel looks like a molecular shapes model, which are used in chemistry to show how compounds are visualized and create reactions.
    • Ria's Doppel summons Yachiyo Nanami's spears. This could relate to her and Yachiyo's one-sided rivalry.
