In Puella Magi Sorana Magica (Our Fates, Our Futures)

Before 2225

Sorana was born circa year 2208. She was raised by two mothers, one whose name was not mentioned, and one named Lina (リナ), in Old Capital's "Island District" on Earth.

On May 2nd, 2220, Sorana first found Lilly Candy streaming online from Main Belt, asteroid Juno, KawaiiTopia, which immediately fascinated her, prompting her to sign up for the membership and send a message to her under a pseudonym. Half an hour later, she got to see Lilly read her message on-stream and sing for her, enamouring her further. That night, Sorana dreamt about doing a collab stream on KawaiiTopia with Lilly.. An unspecified amount of time later after waking up, Sorana decided to try streaming herself, raking in one viewer, who asked her about the character on her t-shirt. She explained it's not a character, but the Anomalocaris, a species of animal that became extinct 500 million years ago, and rambled intensely on its topic. She didn't notice her viewer left without a further comment until she went to find a figurine of the animal to show them, and decided to never stream again.

On September 23rd, 2220, when Sorana was at home with her unnamed mother, a tropical cyclone's severity rose to the status of typhoon, prompting an evacuation order. She and the mother attempted to follow it, planning to pick Lina up on the way, however due to the weather, the road was closed. The two of them never reunited with Lina, and the unnamed mother was swept away by the flood, thus marking the last time Sorana saw her. Sorana lost consciousness soon afterwards, and regained it on a truck rammed into a footbridge. She was rescued a few hours later, marking the beginning of her life as an orphan.

March 2225

On March 1st, 2225, Sorana did her spring break homework - a world history report, after which she treated herself to watching Lilly's stream. Seeing Lilly announce a collab with a free-to-play gacha game, she decided to play it. Due to poor luck, she failed to get Lilly's brainwave ASMR despite spending a considerable amount of money on pulls. She decided to look for a job, and found an AI career assessment tool, which recommended her marine salvage and informed her on what it entailed in broad strokes, its monetization scheme and its requirements, including a boating license. She accepted it and got the license a week later through VR training.

Merely half an hour later, she got to meet Coral Seeker Beta (コーラル・シーカーβ), or Coral for short, her rented submarine equipped with Navi AI (ナビAI). It explained the job to her further, including the paid reservation system required to salvage without a penalty, and told her she's required to wear the provided work uniform, a diving suit, while operating the submersible. Seeing her current area wasn't very profitable, she reserved a slot somewhere else She ventured further into the Old Capital Waters, where she collected items such as wrecked cars' batteries using the tools available and built into the submarine. Initially excited about her profits, her enthusiasm dwarfed as Coral listed the fees and taxes to be deduced, meaning Sorana was actually in the red. Coral informed her that poor profits are due to her inexperience, and that she would be able to earn more as her skills and credibility raise, including other forms of submarine work such as guided tours or streaming, the second of which Sorana didn't want to do. Coral then proposed she could participate in quests, that is high-paying tasks in more difficult conditions.

August, September 2225

Sorana continues to live in the now-flooded Old Capital's ruins, at the Ship Archipelago, an offshore settlement for those displaced by the rising sea level, in a small, pre-owned rental boat. She studies through a correspondence school, and works in underwater salvage using a rented submarine named Coral Seeker Beta (コーラル・シーカーβ) and equipped with a large language model named Navi AI (ナビAI), serving as her navigation and boss. Due to her tight budget, the submarine is a cheap model, lacking in many quality-of-life features, and she can be seen eating fish she herself caught in the polluted waters.

Magia Exedra

Kioku

A girl living in the Old Capital, a metropolis deserted as the sea rose. She studies via a correspondence school and makes a living from underwater salvage using a submarine.
