Development
Script
GenGen Kusano was asked to write Sorana Magica after his work on Null Magical Girl, which was published as part of Puella Magi Madoka Magica 10th Anniversary Book. The request was to write a "story about Magical Girls in the future".[3] Kusano used only the settings established through episode 11 of the original television series to develop Sorana Magica, and didn't use any settings post-Law of Cycles, as the Law of Cycles is difficult to include in a science fiction-based story.[3] Instead, also due to a difficulty of introducing new settings on his own, he aims to bring a new story by exploring existing settings through science fiction thought experiment.[3]
When Kusano was considering how far in the future he would write, he decided that the near future is too difficult to write. Although he also considered making Sorana Magica a space opera far in the future, he believed it would be too far from Madoka Magica and that he couldn't finish it within the length he was requested. In the end, he decided that 200 years would be the sweet spot.[3]
Although the development team has no hard limit on length, Kusano was requested to write a total of 5 chapters, with 10 episodes each. Kusano noted that chapter 5 ended up very long.[3]
Worldbuilding
The worldbuilding in Sorana Magica received influences from The Expanse. In particular, how humanity has expanded through the solar system.[3] 200 years in the future, humans have already expanded beyond Earth, and people are living in a colony around Saturn, and there are Magical Girls on many celestial objects.[3] Kusano wrote a timeline for himself for events that led to humanity expanding into the space in 200 years.[3]
In the story, humans have tried to advance to space without genome editing but initially failed, only succeeding in doing so after genome editing was allowed. Kusano used the fact that the "body is an external hardware" from the original television series for this particular setting.[3] He also paid attention to the depiction of the laws of physics in the series, in that anything except Magic is the same as our universe. The only thing that can break the laws of physics is the Magic that is created from emotional energy. He tries to leverage both magic and science in his depiction. For example, using lightning magic against a building that is made of conductive material.[3]
