Near Witch

A Near Witch (魔女の境界, Majo no Kyōkai, lit. "Witch's Frontier") is a transitional form that manifests when the transformation into a Witch is halted during the final stages by Fuka's Spiritless magic.

It represents an incomplete or suspended form of the Witch-turning process and was first identified and named by Fuka and Sumire Yoake in the events surrounding Toyozuru City. The term was coined by Sumire to describe the creature that appears when a Magical Girl is halted just before her Soul Gem fully taints and she completes her transformation into a Witch. The phenomenon was discovered during Fuka's experiments with her "Spiritless magic," which temporarily suspends the body and soul to prevent Soul Gem corruption.

Near Witches are created when a Magical Girl reaches the brink of despair, with her Soul Gem heavily tainted but not yet fully transformed into a Grief Seed. While Fuka's magic would make the girl appear physically dead, while her Soul Gem remains intact, applying it at this point also leads to the manifestation of the Near Witch.

Near Witches are explicitly described as halfway between a Magical Girl and a Witch. They carry impurities but lack the full autonomy or destructive scale of a true Witch. Their appearance is uncertain, and it is unknown if the Near Witch takes the appearance similar to a girl's Witch, Familiar, Doppel, or something else entirely. The Near Witch is only described as a monster, "weird creature" or "small Witch."

A Near Witch remains connected to the Magical Girl from whom it emerged. The girl does not fully transform as long as Fuka continues applying Spiritless magic, but the process is merely postponed and cannot be undone with Grief Seeds, or Fuka's own magic. If the suppressing magic is not reapplied regularly, the girl immediately resumes her transformation into a full Witch. The Near Witch itself can dissipate or destabilize once the magic lapses, thus they're more a sign of a life-support system than a proper cure to Witches.

A Magical Girl from Toyozuru City who spends her days running around helping people. She once drifted through life lacking both hope and despair, but after a fateful encounter, she found a spark of hope. Though often misunderstood due to her soft-spoken nature, she is earnest and loves cute things. Sumire describes her as "cool yet foolish."

Etymology

• "Higure (日暮)" means "nightfall" or "dusk". This ties in with Sumire Yoake's last name, which means "dawn", and also with Mikazuki (lit. crescent moon).
