Magia Exedra Main Quest - Critic Witch
Critic Witch (批評家の魔女) is the third and final Crescent Memoria Main Quest in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra.
Alongside it an Event version of the story was released.
Story
Magia Record Crescent Memoria Part 3
Momoko travels to Toyozuru alone to investigate the disappearances and find Sumire, having heard rumors of a monster emerging from a Magical Girl. She defeats a Familiar, then witnesses Fuka Higure standing over an unconscious girl from whom a small Witch like creature briefly appears. Momoko accuses Fuka of turning Magical Girls into Witches, but Sumire suddenly appears. Fuka grabs Sumire as a shield, uses spiritless magic on Momoko, and flees.
Later, Momoko meets Mel, who admits she also came to Toyozuru. Tsuruno reveals she knew about Momoko's secret trip and joins them. The three fight endless Familiars and split up. Mel Anna is saved from Familiars by Fuka, who recognizes Mel as the fortune teller who predicted she would meet her destiny. Momoko defeats a Witch and finds Sumire, but Sumire coldly rejects her, saying she chose to leave Mikazuki Villa and cannot bear to be around them, then escapes with Fuka.
Meanwhile, Fuka and Sumire discuss their plan. Flashbacks reveal that Sumire’s grandmother was killed by a Witch, and that Sumire learned Magical Girls turn into Witches. Fuka’s spiritless magic can create a “Near Witch” anomaly, temporarily halting the transformation. Sumire admits she lied to Yachiyo and the others about the spiritless incident and the Yuhicho Magical Girls, all to use the veterans to hunt Witches while hiding the truth. She genuinely grew fond of them and now wants to save them from their fate as atonement for her deception. Fuka’s stronger “soul stopping” magic caused the long haired idol to appear dead when she was merely suspended.
Back at Mikazuki Villa, Yachiyo and Mifuyu use Kanae’s magic infused bookmark to see a memory: Kanae was close with Sumire and made her contract to save her. They realize Sumire kept this connection secret, possibly resenting them for Kanae’s death, yet she never harmed them. Tsuruno calls, reporting that Toyozuru is overrun with Familiars and that Fuka is ignoring them. Yachiyo hypothesizes that Witches are former Magical Girls, and that Sumire and Fuka are trying to change the system by allowing Familiars to become Witches to harvest Grief Seeds for more magic. She decides they must go to Toyozuru and tell everyone the truth about Soul Gems.
Sumire reflects on her love for Toyozuru and her motivation to save Magical Girls as atonement for her sins, including causing Kanae’s death. Fuka allows Familiars to run wild and turn into Witches to harvest Grief Seeds, and she has been experimenting on Magical Girls with her spiritless magic, creating “Near Witches” that halt transformation but cannot reverse it. She hides the truth from Sumire, who believes Near Witches are salvation. Fuka collapses from magic depletion; Sumire finds her and decides to research at the library, where Kyubey appears.
Meanwhile, Momoko, Tsuruno, and Mel fight endless Familiars in Toyozuru. Yachiyo and Mifuyu arrive after Tsuruno calls them. Yachiyo reveals the truth: Magical Girls turn into Witches, and Soul Gems are their life force. The group is shaken but resolves to stop Fuka and Sumire. They split up to find them. Tsuruno locates Fuka, who is about to put a Magical Girl into spiritless sleep. Fuka admits she has done terrible things. Sumire appears, confessing she initiated everything and used the Mikazuki girls. She intends to make a contract to fix the Near Witch flaw. Fuka tries to put everyone to sleep, but Yachiyo and Mifuyu counter. Yachiyo uses Kanae’s bookmark to show Sumire Kanae’s memories: Kanae made her contract to save Sumire from a kidnapper, then distanced herself to protect Sumire, always wishing for Sumire’s happiness. Sumire realizes Kanae never resented her.
Reconciled, the group teams up with Fuka and Sumire. They discover that a Witch has swallowed the base where spiritless Magical Girls are kept. Inside the Labyrinth, the Witch grows stronger by absorbing Near Witches. As Fuka’s magic runs out and the situation becomes dire, Kyubey appears and offers Sumire a contract to save everyone. Sumire hesitates, but Momoko encourages her not to give up. Sumire decides to fight with her intelligence rather than make a contract. Together they execute a plan: Mifuyu uses illusions to conceal attacks, Fuka pins the Witch with spiritless magic, Tsuruno, Yachiyo, and Mel Anna strike simultaneously, and Momoko lands the final blow. The Witch is defeated but drops no Grief Seeds, and the Labyrinth shifts. The sleeping Magical Girls are still in danger of turning into Witches. Fuka has no magic left.
Sumire, believing this is the price for her sins, calls Kyubey to make a wish, but not for atonement, and instead for everyone’s happiness, vowing to protect those who matter most.
After Sumire’s wish, all the spiritless Magical Girls disappear except for Sumire and Fuka. The others wake up having forgotten the truth about Witches, and the Mikazuki Villa girls forget Sumire and Fuka entirely. Sumire thus becomes a Magical Girl and teams up with Fuka to fight Witches.
After a handful of battles, Fuka eventually runs out of Grief Seeds and turns into the Witch Raspberry. Before transforming, she admits she never forgot the truth and asks Sumire to see her off with a smile and someday defeat her. Sumire fights the Fuka Witch repeatedly, but it always escapes, seemingly trying not to hurt her.
Meanwhile, the Mikazuki Villa girls hunt Fuka's Witch that has crossed into their territory. Mel uses too much magic and, without a Grief Seed, turns into a Witch before their eyes. Momoko, Yachiyo, and Mifuyu witness her transformation in horror and learn the truth again.
After some time, Sumire continues fighting alone, carrying the memories of everyone she has lost: Kanae, Fuka, and now Mel. She reflects that Magical Girls still turn into Witches and the world remains unjust, but she keeps fighting so that someday she can be proud of herself. The tale of joy, sin, and hope now belongs only to her and while proclaiming herself as a Magical Girl, she successfully defeats Fuka's Witch.
