Summary

A former queen of France who sold the throne of France to England in the midst of the Hundred Years War, and was called the "traitor queen". She does not transform into a magical girl, but uses unusual magic reminiscent of a Witch, and stands as the last enemy of Tart (Jeanne d'Arc) and others.

Witch Description

La Reine’s Twilight. Her nature is dominion. An avaricious witch who desires endless power and influence. This witch’s main body is actually separate from her larva-shaped legs, and the real body protected by a hard outer shell only rarely reveals its true form. Her Labyrinth is immense enough to cover an entire country, and the populace trapped within it remain none the wiser. The witch feeds on the grief, terror and other negative emotions of the populace swallowed by her Labyrinth’s darkness, and expands her power and territory to become an ever-mightier witch within an ever-larger Labyrinth.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

October, 1428
Melissa de Vignolles and her father La Hire, alongside many other soldiers, move to fight for the freedom of Orleans and to meet Jean de Dunois. All of this is seen by Pernelle and Kyubey within the nearest woods. Pernelle is concerned about the fate of Orleans and it's sudden fallen into the English forces. Pernelle claims that the one responsible for the English army is the traitorous queen, Isabeau de Bavière, saying it is all Kyubey's fault for giving power to Isabeau.

At noon, La Hire tells Melissa that the English have taken full control of Orleans, that all this happened because of the Treaty of Troyes: an agreement made by Isabeau to marry her daughter Catherine de Valois to the King of England, since her plan was for her grandchild to be the king of both France and England. But since this couldn't happen, things got worse between the English and the French. In another place, Pernelle asks Kyubey if the girl he has chosen will stop Isabeau. Kyubey says he isn't interested in stopping the war, he only wants to stop Isabeau from interfering in his work. Kyubey says that Isabeau was always an intelligent woman, even as a teen, but she always had ambition, so that's what made her have a great potential as a magical girl, but could never have guessed what wish she would make...

1385: Northern France – Amiens
Isabeau, formerly known as Elisabeth, arrives from Bavaria to France in 1385 to marry Charles VI, the future monarch of the French kingdom. Isabeau proved to be a charming and intelligent young woman, as she managed to master much of the French language in a short time and win the affection of much of the court of her future husband. A few days after she arrived in France, she was called to a meeting with Charles and some of his maids, where it was mentioned that their wedding would be soon. But one of the maids, attempting to humiliate Elisabeth, points out that another member of the royal court was named Elisabeth too, and they could not call her "Isabelle" because one of Charles's sisters already had that name too. She proposes calling the future queen "Isabeau" as a joke, something that bothers another of the servants, but Elisabeth proceeds to smile, saying that she loves it. Ffrom that moment on, they call her "Isabeau", enchanting Charles and the rest of her court with her "angelic smile", even making the maid feel ashamed for trying to toy with such a "good girl".

Back in the present, Pernelle says that Isabeau also could read and write in Latin, so she quickly became loved in Charles VI's court, being both intelligent and beautiful. Kyubey says that one of Isabeau's talents was the ability to adapt her personality to the tastes of others in order to control them. Kyubey remembers what Isabeau once told him, since she was a foreigner in France, she needed to make allies fast, so she charmed all the court with a fake personality, since only a fool would fight with someone to make enemies. Pernelle guesses that was her way of masking her greedy and power-hungry nature...

1385: France – Paris
One day, Isabeau returns to her chambers and at that moment, she meets Kyubey, who appears in front of her and tells her that she has great potential as a magical girl and wants to make a contract with her in exchange for a wish. Isabeau, instead of making her wish, proceeds to ask Kyubey questions about magical girls, witches, and information about him, to which Kyubey answers each and every one of her questions: about what would happen to her body, that magical girls would become witches, and about his role in gathering energy generated by girls and witches and how he is basically immortal due to having many bodies.

Back in the present, Pernelle questions Kyubey how he didn't see that the 14-year-old Isabeau seemed to be curious about witches and magical girls, and why he didn't see her as a threat, but Kyubey says he took the risk as the incubators thought that her energy was worth for making a contract, even with all the risks.

In the flashback, Isabeau happily starts laughing while making a big face and proceeds to kill Kyubey with a candelabra. At that moment, another Kyubey appeared, asking why she did that if he had already explained himself to her. Isabeau continues smiling as she tells Kyubey that she just wanted to verify that what he told her was true and tells Kyubey how happy she is to have met him, explaining that she did not come to France just to be an ornament and the wife of a king, as she wants to have control over France, England, Spain, Portugal, the Holy Roman Empire and the rest of the European continent. Kyubey tells her that if that is her case, she can grant her that wish, but Isabeau explains that she actually wants to achieve that for herself and has discovered how to achieve it. With a smile, she proceeds to hold Kyubey with her hands, saying that he is magnificent as if he was "a true incubus". So she asks him for her wish: "I want everything you possess."

Isabeau becomes a magical girl, being surprised by her outfit. Kyubey explains to her that it is her magical girl outfit and that, due to her desire, she has become part of him: an Incubator. She obtains the unique ability to create magical girls like Kyubey by sensing their karmic potential like he does. In addition, she also has a large part of the Incubators' other abilities, having great access to all the knowledge that Kyubey possesses, and that her body is eternal and will have the same appearance when older. Isabeau doesn't really understand much of Kyubey's knowledge because it is almost impossible for humans to understand it as Kyubey explains, but Isabeau doesn't seem to care and adds that now that her body is immortal she can start creating her own army of magical girls, who will strengthen her with their wishes and help her eventually dominate Europe. Kyubey asks her how she feels about everything she knows, to which Isabeau adds that she feels like "the Devil himself incarnate."

Pernelle thinks that Isabeaus's powers are too powerful, and she finds it strange that Kyubey didn't feel that she was dangerous to him. But Kyubey says that no human will ever be capable of replacing the Incubators, since humans can't comprehend all the knowledge they have, and Isabeau wasn't a threat to them at that moment, since Isabeau wanted to take every step of her conquest slowly, as she thought she had all the time of the world because her body was immortal.

1385: France – Paris
Isabeau begins spending time exploring the French palace with the servant who tried to humiliate her. They wanted to help her after being fascinated by "her angelic aura" and thought how difficult it could be for her as a foreigner now living as a monarch in a foreign country. The servant tells Isabeau about several of her husband's most powerful relatives in his court, such as his uncle Philip I, who arranged the marriage between Isabeau and Charles, adding that she thinks Charles VI is now ready to lead the country.

Isabeau proceeds to ask the servant what would happen if her husband could no longer rule France, to which the servant says it'd very difficult to say, but the power will probably pass to Charles's brother, Louis I. Isabeau proceeds to ask the servant more questions about other members who could inherit control of France, and she tells her that they would be Philip I himself or his son John I. Isabeau thanks her for the information, and the delighted servant tells her that it is an honor to serve the future Queen and that "her only wish is to serve her for the rest of eternity." Isabeau smiles at her having realized that she has great karmic potential, just as Kyubey told her, and asks the maid if that is what she really wants, she can grant her wish. Isabeau proceeds to transform in her magical girl form and tells her maid to close her eyes, empty her mind, and in this way, she will grant her wish, so that she will swear eternal loyalty to her.

1392: France – Paris

Isabeau begins her plan using her maids and servants as spies, who overheard conversations between the palace soldiers as they moved unnoticed from one place to another. A servant of Isabeau spies on a conversation, in which the soldiers talk about Charles VI's poor mental state and how he attacked his brother Louis I on an expedition after having a terrifying vision. The maid informs Isabeau of this, and she realizes that her plan to drive her husband crazy has begun to flourish. Isabeau used the power of one of her servants to start trying to drive her husband crazy, causing him to have these visions while attacking Louis I. Kyubey appears in her room, saying that it has been years since they last saw each other. Kyubey tells her that she has turned several of her maids into magical girls to increase her number of powers or use them for her own benefit in her conspiracies, stating that she forces them to make those wishes. Kyubey does not understand how Isabeau is unable to realize that she now grants miracles, but instead of asking to change things, she only sees her maid servants as magic that just gives her more power in order to be better at manipulation and to make herself more powerful. Isabeau deduces that this must bother Kyubey, but he explains that he really has no emotions and is only intrigued by her incoherent actions and sees them as disadvantageous to his species because he cannot collect the magical energy that Isabeau has been collecting for herself during those years. Isabeau seems to ignore this and Kyubey asks her what she plans to do now. Isabeau tells him that she will make her husband leave the stage with a new power that she has obtained from one of her maids.

1393: France – Near Paris - Saint-Marche
Isabeau organizes a ball in honor of one of her bridesmaids, in which she uses her magic to summon fire that burns alive a large part of Charles's court and Charles himself, who was almost burned alive during the event, which became known as Bal des Ardents (The Dance of the Burned), where Isabeau acted the part of a worried wife asking soldiers to "save" the lives of her husband and the other attendees. Due to her husband's obvious paranoia, Isabeau proceeded to try to claim control of the crown, although Charles's uncle Philip II, his cousin John I, and his younger brother Louis I also tried to obtain control of the crown.

1403: France – Paris
Isabeau became the head of the French crown and acted as a "mediator" between Phillip and John's conflicts with Louis.

1404: France – Paris
Isabeau summoned her brother-in-law, Louis I. He wasn't interested in talking to her as she and John I had the power of France, but Isabeau asked him if he was really interested in having power, to which Louis I told her that he did and that he would not mind being called vain for that, saying that he would be better at ruling than his uncle or his cousin. Isabeau approaches him smiling and saying that she "highly values honesty" and kisses him, beginning a secret love affair with him. Some time later, several of the people at court quickly discovered that Isabeau had an affair with her brother-in-law Louis, even though Isabeau's main ally at that time was John I, who had been left alone in his conflict after the death of his father, Philip II.

November 1407: France – Paris
People still can't believe Isabeau had been in a secret affair with Louis I for 4 years, since he was the enemy of her main ally, John I, but then Louis was murdered while returning from an encounter with Isabeau at his home, being killed by Isabeau's influence on John. Kyubey approaches Isabeau again to point out that he is aware of her actions and warns her that the French people are beginning to lean in favor of John I after the rumor spread that Isabeau and Louis were lovers, but Isabeau laughs, saying that she doesn't care, and she has been thinking of a way to get rid of John.

1410
La Hire hears from fellow soldiers that an alliance between the Argmanacs and the Burgudians has been formed to carry on the legacy of Louis I, and the leaders of this faction are John I and Queen Isabeau, but La Hire sees it as a traitorous action that Isabeau is jumping back and forth between allies that are enemies. Then La Hire learns about the division of France and the plans of the Argmanacs to take France...

In her palace, Isabeau is questioned by Kyubey once again if everything is going according to her plan. Isabeau says that she wants to divide France in two and eventually take control of the crown in a more easy way. Isabeau admits that not everything has really gone in the way she wants, but she is making more and more progress in taking down John I. Kyubey tells her that her actions have led to the fragmentation of the country and a civil war about to break out, to which Isabeau responds that she already has one more plan. Due to the events of internal conflicts, England will probably plan to intervene to take over French territory as they did in the past. Isabeau says that some of her daughters are "very pretty" and they can probably marry into the English crown. Isabeau plans to wed her daughter Catherine de Valois to the future king of England, Henry V. Isabeau also states that her youngest daughters "have" the same potential as her, and she is interested in making them like her.

Kyubey points out that he is not surprised that Isabeau is planning to turn her youngest daughters into magical girls, saying that unlike all the other sons and daughters Isabeau had, she spends all her time with them, even taking them on field trips, and deduces that she must really love the three of them. Isabeau tells Kyubey that he is right, and reveals that the real reason she wants to make her three youngest daughters into magical girls is because she wants to keep them by her side forever. Kyubey changes the subject and asks Isabeau if it wouldn't be better to use her own magic to take over France for herself and points out that she doesn't seem to take full advantage of her magical girl powers. Isabeau explains that she actually feels great pleasure in doing all this from the shadows slowly, saying that, in this way, she "savors" the process of gaining control and power. And thanks to her desire, she has obtained a body that has stopped aging for a long time, and by using little of her magic, she will have an eternal life, and rushing to achieve her goals would not be as satisfying as that moment. Kyubey wonders why Isabeau considers this to be true, knowing the inevitable truth of every magical girl...

Back in the present, Pernelle says that things really did go in favor of Isabeau: the Argmanacs installed Dalphin Charles, Isabeau's son, as the heir of the throne, and in 1419, he was responsible for the death of John I, being manipulated by Isabeau to get rid of him. Kyubey says that then, to get rid of Charles as soon as possible, she started the rumor that Dalphin Charles was an illegitimate son, and caused problems with his throne succession, signing the Treaty of Troyes in 1420 in order to marry her daughter Catherine to King Henry V of England. Isabeau's plan was to have control over her future grandchild to take control of both France and England, but things didn't happen as she wanted them to...

August 31, 1422
King Henry V of England dies.

October 21, 1422
King Charles VI of France dies.

This is what set Isabeau into a state of despair, as her ambitions would not become true. Kyubey says what happened at that moment was inevitable: Isabeau was slowly turning into a witch. Kyubey states that by this point, Corbeau was the only one of her three daughters to have become a magical girl and shortly after that is when Isabeau started to go insane, and she couldn't recognize her daughters anymore, although she still loved them. She was consumed by her frustration and, in the words of Pernelle, became a monster in the form of a human. Pernelle says that at that moment, Kyubey should have won like he always does, but something else happened...

In a flashback, Isabeau is shown turning into a witch in front of her three daughters while in a fit of rage, saying that she couldn't let things end like this because she hadn't taken control of anything yet. Watching everything from afar, Kyubey finally believed he could collect the energy produced by Isabeau and the magical girls she had created, but just as the three girls were crying for the death of their mother, the older sister Lapin screamed that she didn't want things to end this way. While Corbeau fought the witch, Lapin was holding her mother's body and said to the witch that she too would become a magical girl and made her wish: "I want my mother to return to the way she was before".

Back in the present, Pernelle says that Kyubey didn't account for Crèpuscule de la Reine to retain Isabeau's powers, so she still was part incubator and this was how she granted Lapin's wish, turning Isabeau's body into a puppet for her witch form. Kyubey says that's true, and the real enemy is the witch born out of Isabeau's despair. Pernelle says that if Isabeau and her daughters aren't stopped, humanity could disappear, so that's why Kyubey wants to stop them as this is inconvenient for him...

October, 1428
Isabeau orders Minou to attack Orleans, which the three sisters are excited about. But Minou says their mother also wants to support the English in Normandy, so they divide their tasks up: Corbeau will take care of Orleans, Lapin Normandy, and Minou will scatter grief seeds from their maids in rebellious villages around France. Minou also suggests they start recruiting more magical girl servants for their army, so she plans on killing families and taking the daughters from those families to make them magical girls. The three sisters start working this way, creating carnage everywhere they went.

Back in the present, Pernelle hopes that Kyubey is working on solving the problem, and he says that, thanks to a certain girl (Riz Hawkwood), he has been searching for a girl to stop Isabeau, and believes they might be close to finding that girl. Pernelle says that the prophecy is something invented, and he shouldn't believe it, but Kyubey insists that it is people's belief that can increase the karmic potential of the girl he is looking for. Pernelle says that Isabeau is becoming stronger, and they don't know what wish was made by Minou, Isabeau's youngest daughter, and that it might be a problem. Still, Pernelle wants to save humanity. Kyubey asks her what her plans are, but she refuses to tell him, but she does think that her husband, Nicolas, once told her about the importance of miracles and belief in the human heart.
