Doppel Description

WINCHESTER (Winchester)

The Doppel of Seclusion.
Its form is a Mirror.
The master of this emotion is angered by how her Doppel disdains reality yet refuses to move, and attempts to take control of it herself. This Doppel drew out a precise and intricate ideal world for itself, but placing a mess of complicated emotions onto that world has rendered it unable to move. There was a time when it tried to project its imagination onto mirrors to weave its ideal world, but the products of its own imagination felt not only bland, but outright shallow. In the end, after continually agonizing and chipping away at its own heart, its form changed into a flat, symmetrical shadow. Sick of the sight of her own Doppel hiding and worrying, its master proposed that they simply tack on the parts that were missing– to find living sacrifices with which to supplant its imagination. The Doppel agrees with its master’s suggestion.

Side Story

Mikoto Sena's Side Story

Episode 1 - The two who happened to meet: Nothing I tried ever bore fruit, but... If this meeting was real...

Mikoto Sena begins by describing her seemingly perfect life: kind school friends who worry about her, enjoyable school days, and a loving home with parents. She emphasizes her friend group's rule of always speaking one's mind, leading to occasional fights that make their bonds stronger. At home, she enjoys her mother's cooking and her father's presence despite his overprotectiveness. She expresses deep gratitude for her life in Kamihama.

This idyllic narration is abruptly interrupted by her parents' violent argument. Her mother accuses her father of financial neglect, while he defends his work-related expenses. Mikoto hides in her room, wishing to escape back into her happy dream and feeling herself becoming invisible or like a ghost. She reveals her earlier description was a facade: her father is abusive and financially irresponsible, leaving the family destitute. At school, she pretends to be a cheerful girl from a normal family to avoid rejection. After school, she declines others' invitations by claiming prior commitments, though in reality she cannot afford to go. She also avoids going home as much as she can to avoid her father.

One day, Mikoto's mother gives her a crumpled 1,000 yen bill as allowance, her cheek visibly swollen from Mikoto's father's abuse. Mikoto suggests she could get a job to help her, but her mother insists on handling things herself, also noting that Mikoto isn't old enough for a job yet. Frustrated by her mother's refusal to leave her father, Mikoto decides he must disappear. She takes the 1,000 yen to buy a weapon, considering a utility knife from a 100-yen store. As she contemplates the purchase, she recalls a rare happy memory: her father unsuccessfully trying to win her a prize at a festival years ago. This memory causes her to hesitate, and she flees the store without buying the knife.

Later, near a train station, Mikoto considers running away but hesitates, torn between abandoning her mother and escaping her misery. This is when Kyubey appears, offering to grant her wish. Mikoto contracts to become a Magical Girl, wishing for her father to disappear. Her wish is granted: her father leaves to live with another woman. Initially overjoyed, Mikoto plans to rebuild her life honestly. However, her mother begins neglecting the household, withholding funds for food and frequently going out, so their financial situation worsens.

Mikoto discovers her magic allows her to command obedience. Desperate for a normal family, she ends up using it on a neighbor, making the woman believe Mikoto is her daughter. The neighbor and her husband welcome Mikoto, serving foods they believe she likes (fried meats) and asking about a recent sports tournament. Mikoto realizes they are seeing her as their actual daughter who is now an adult, instead of Mikoto herself.

Mikoto throws herself into her Magical Girl duties, fighting Familiars obsessively. She feels this role is her only remaining identity. During one battle, she encounters another Magical Girl struggling against a Familiar. Seeing a potential connection, Mikoto uses her command magic to protect the girl, hoping another Magical Girl might understand and accept her true self. She feels her story with this girl is beginning.

Episode 2 - Inside a lie: I knew it. I knew that we weren’t understanding each other.

Mikoto meets Hanna Sarasa, another Magical Girl. Mikoto is eager to befriend her, actively trying to close the distance. She initiates conversations and points out Familiars during battles, but Hanna remains guarded and tells Mikoto to focus on fighting. Mikoto searches for shared interests to build rapport. She notices Hanna petting a dog and points out a nearby cat, stating her own preference for cats. Hanna replies she prefers dogs. Later, Mikoto tries discussing chocolate snacks (walnut vs. acorn varieties) and other topics like bean paste (chunky vs. smooth), fried egg toppings (sauce vs. soy sauce), and housing (owning vs. renting), finding their preferences consistently differ. Hanna finds Mikoto's persistent efforts "funny" and somewhat amusing.

With Hanna's help, Mikoto discovers her command, or rather suggestion magic can also be used on herself. She uses this to make herself believe in the existence of a loving, attentive family and happy school life, temporarily easing her pain when at home. When Hanna expresses concern about Mikoto's freedom to fight Witches and offers to meet Mikoto's parents to reassure them, Mikoto, under suggestion, excitedly agrees. After returning home and the suggestion wearing off, Mikoto panics, realizing her real family situation would expose her lies. To maintain the facade, she decides to take Hanna to the home of the elderly couple she previously enchanted into believing she is their daughter.

Mikoto confirms the elderly couple is still under her suggestion. She informs them a friend is visiting and meets Hanna. At the couple's home, Mikoto (without self-suggestion this time) and Hanna help prepare dinner. Mikoto claims cooking bean sprouts is her specialty. The enchanted couple acts as loving parents, smiling and interacting warmly. During cooking, Mikoto observes Hanna helping and the couple watching affectionately. Seeing this ideal family dynamic, Mikoto decides to permanently replace her real life with this illusion. She resolves to cast an unbreakable suggestion on herself to believe this family is real, ensuring Hanna never discovers the truth and securing her "happiness."

While cooking together, Hanna observes Mikoto looks sad despite claiming happiness. Hanna states Mikoto always tries to convince herself she's happy, asks if she's forcing herself, and offers to listen if Mikoto wants to talk. Mikoto denies being sad, insisting she's happy and feels accepted here. However, she admits feeling unfulfilled and invisible at home and school, expressing a desire to be found and not abandoned. Hanna acknowledges she only partially understands but encourages Mikoto to keep talking to her and stays by her side. After dinner, Hanna gives Mikoto an exchange diary to share information about Witches, mentioning Mikoto can also write her thoughts since they are a team. Mikoto is thrilled and later buys them matching pens for the diary. She struggles initially with what to write, realizing her habit of lying obscured her true self, but hopes Hanna can help "find" her someday. She reflects that she has only reflected a false world.

Episode 3 - Before night comes: Hey... How come the setting sun is so radiant?

Mikoto and Hanna continue hunting Witches and Familiars near Mikoto's apartment complex. Mikoto becomes increasingly obsessive about finding Witches, driven by fear that her Soul Gem will become too tainted to use her suggestion magic. She also worries Hanna will abandon her if she becomes useless. Hanna notices Mikoto's excessive focus and asks in their exchange diary if something happened. Mikoto lies, claiming she simply wants to protect people as a Magical Girl's duty.

While patrolling, they encounter another Magical Girl, Kanagi Izumi, who helps them fight. Mikoto suspects Kanagi has mind-reading magic and fears Kanagi discovered her lies. Mikoto decides to erase Kanagi's memories of them using her suggestion magic. However, Hanna arrives first and uses her own magic (which copies others' abilities) to erase Kanagi's memories of them. Mikoto interprets this as Hanna protecting her. Grateful but more desperate to prove her worth, Mikoto intensifies her Witch-hunting efforts.

Hanna writes a deeply personal entry in their diary, revealing her past she'd been hiding included severe bullying, neglectful parents who died, and being sent to an orphanage. She describes meeting Mikoto as the first sparkling light in her dark life and offers Mikoto support if she's struggling. Touched, Mikoto writes a raw, honest reply confessing all her lies: her unhappy home life, the fake family she introduced, and her hollow self. She admits she wants to find happiness with Hanna. However, Mikoto tears up this honest page before sending it. Instead, she sends a false reply thanking Hanna for sharing, claiming she's fine, and promising to protect Hanna.

Later, while hunting, Hanna confronts Mikoto directly about her exhaustion and strange behavior, urging her not to push herself. Mikoto insists she's happy fighting Witches and refuses Hanna's suggestion to run away together, claiming she has happiness and things to protect here. Mikoto resolves to change her situation herself before truly facing Hanna. Immediately after this resolve, Mikoto collapses on the apartment complex rooftop. Her Soul Gem, overwhelmed by corruption from constant magic use, turns into a Grief Seed and she transforms into a Witch.

Mikoto experiences agonizing pain and fading consciousness in her last moments. She reflects on her failures: running from her real parents and classmates instead of being honest, and not confiding in Hanna despite knowing she would be forgiven. She regrets erasing her father and acknowledges her punishment is deserved. As she transforms, she sees the beautiful sunset behind Hanna and feels as if the world itself is celebrating her death. However, she feels overwhelming gratitude that Hanna is with her until the end and Hanna screams Mikoto's name.

Flashforward to Sayonara Storage, in Mikoto's fading awareness, Hanna uses Mikoto's "weird pen" (from their diary) and vows to prepare "what Mikoto truly wanted." Mikoto's final thought questions what she truly desired after all.

Powers and Abilities

See also Winchester#Powers and Abilities.

As a magical girl, Mikoto's power was Suggestion, the ability to make others do what she told them. She is only able to make people do simple things, and it also extends to witches and familiars. This ability extends to more profound mind manipulation, allowing Mikoto to alter perceptions of reality and rewrite memories.

After transforming into a witch due to Mitama’s wish, Mikoto's persona is split from Winchester and she gains a new power called Transplant magic, which allows her to transfer her persona into another magical girl’s body. While in a host, Mikoto appears as an apparition only the host can see. If the host’s persona is weak or dormant, Mikoto can take full control of the body and with enough energy, Mikoto can take over the body of an active host entirely for a short time. Her abilities also extend to the manipulation of emotional or metaphysical energies, such as malice, as seen when she absorbed Rumor Hanna’s malice, or when she transferred her Mirrors powers to Iroha.

As a witch, Winchester's powers allow her to link her barriers through mirrors, creating a vast network across different locations, universes, and even timelines. Her labyrinth can connect to points in time, past and future, as well as different universes, however paradoxes can cause the timeline to collapse, and by destroying mirrors from which those paradoxes emerge, this can be avoided. Winchester's labyrinth expands and becomes more complex as intruders enter, and she absorbs small amounts of magical energy from magical girls within. Her labyrinth also has the power to mesmerize and entrance intruders to compel them to explore further despite the risks.

Mikoto's familiars, the Kirico Keepers, have the ability to create copies of guests, including magical girls, by copying their vital information. These familiars can replicate the appearance, abilities, and memories of their targets to such an extent that the copies themselves often don't realize they’re not the original.

Her Doppel grants her flight while carrying Mikoto and can project copies of itself, as well as light beams. Winchester can also project Mikoto’s imagination into mirrors to create a unique window of reality.

Observations

  • The name "Sena" (瀬奈) or "Sen" (せん) can be linked to the dye extracted from the rubia tinctorum, or "Dyer's Madder." In contrast, Hanna Sarasa's surname (更紗) refers to a type of cloth used for decoration. Likely as a reference to Mikoto's effect on Hanna, Mikoto is considered as the "dye" that empowers and embeds itself into Hanna's "cloth."
    • This connection is further supported by the meaning of Mikoto's given name, "Mikoto" (みこと), which is an honorific often used when referring to gods, lords, and important nobles.
  • According to Magia Archive, her shoes were meant to be a pair of glass slippers, which might be referencing Cinderella.

Etymology

  • Her surname contains the characters 瀬 (rapids, current) and 奈 (what; apple, apple tree).
    • 奈 can be an abbreviation of 奈良 (Nara), the capital city of Nara Prefecture, which has become an epicenter of Buddhism in Japan and a popular pilgrimage site. When designed, the city's plan was laid out on a grid and divided by four great roads. Likewise, according to Chinese cosmology, the ruler's place was fixed like the pole star. By dominating the capital, the ruler brought heaven to earth.

Trivia

  • In her Magical Girl Story, she is said to prefer cats over dogs. Notably, cats are often associated with Witches and this could allude to her eventually becoming a Witch.
  • One of her quotes indicates that she likes Peonies, Camellias and Red Spider Lilies. Those flowers represent bravery, longing or perishing with grace, and an abandoned memory or to never meet again respectively.
  • She's Buddhist, as at her home her mother has a Buddhist altar in the living room. This is discovered in the final Mirror Layer chapter.
  • It is through her Witch's Labyrinth that Ultimate Madoka's power was forcibly brought to Magia Record's timeline in A New Beginning, threatening to destroy it.
