April, 1429: Holy Roman Empire – Western Border Elisa, Pernelle, and Cube stand at the French border where they’re greeted by a band of soldier-like Familiars. Cube warns Elisa to take caution as she proceeds to beat the Familiars down thoroughly. It seems the rumors of Phantom Knights spotted at the borders were true, although it turns out they were nothing more than Familiars. Elisa finds it odd that there would be rumors of Familiars roaming throughout France when normal people can’t see Witches or Familiars. Pernelle reminds Elisa that she used to be able to see things like that before she contracted because she had the potential, which means there must be a ton of these Familiars roaming through France for enough potential people to see them and for it to generate a rumor. Pernelle was originally going to have a human messenger take her letter to the fortress, but now she sees she was right to ask Elisa to do it. Elisa is glad her Uncle Oswald wasn’t able to join her this time as they head off to the fortress. Elisa recalls when she was first tasked with this mission. The Imperial courts had originally tasked her uncle with delivering the message, but since he was out of town on a different mission the task fell to Elisa. Elis is happy to fulfill the mission, as she’s proud to serve her country no matter what the task. A servant girl walks up to Elisa and warns her of the rumors she’d heard of Phantom Knights roaming the lands of France. The soldier who had given Elisa her mission begins to admonish the poor girl, thinking she had dared to try to convince Elisa not to take the mission. The poor girl gets flustered until Elisa steps in to defend her. She knows the girl was just trying to warn her to be careful and she thanks her for her concern. Considering what the girl had told her, Elisa fears there may be magic at play here and doesn’t think the human soldiers she would normally bring with her would be enough, hence why she had Pernelle join her. Back in the present day, Elisa turns to Pernelle. Pernelle was more than happy to accompany Elisa on her mission, seeing as how the rumors of Phantom Knights piqued her interest. Elisa was the one to ask Pernelle to join her, but she demands to know what Cube is doing here since he wasn’t invited. Cube says he invited himself to investigate what was going on. He can tell that magic has been used to intervene in the Hundred Years War between England and France and he wanted to confirm his theory. Elisa threatens to roast Cube alive if he says another word and Cube scampers off into the words before Elisa can make good on her threat. Pernelle asks Elisa if she’s always been so hostile towards Cube. Elisa says she always has, and on that note she doesn’t trust Pernelle completely either. Just then the air around them grows thick as they’re accosted by another group of Familiars. Elisa takes them all down, making good use of her firearm. Elisa dusts herself off as a normal soldier comes up the road and greets the two girls, asking if they’re lost. Elisa introduces herself, mentioning the royal letter she was to deliver to the fortress ahead. The soldier is surprised to find that his fortress has guests and offers to guide them there. Cube telepathically tells Elisa this must be the lord of the fortress to have referred to it as his own. Elisa tells him to quiet down unless he wants to get riddled with bullet holes, though she does find it odd that a lord would be walking in the woods alone without a guard. Elisa and the lord talk along the way to the fortress. The lord thanks her for getting rid of the phantom knights that were plaguing the land. Both Elisa and Pernelle note that there are very few soldiers at the castle. Pernelle mentions that there may be more ghosts roaming the lands than the ones they took care of. The lord admits this is true, as several villagers have gone missing over the past few days. Because of this many of the remaining villagers and most of the soldiers have fled, nicknaming the place “the ghost fortress”. Elisa’s letter was a request for troops, but seeing the sad state of the fortress leaves no doubt in her mind that they will not be able to aid her. Pernelle telepathically tells Elisa that it is odd that the fortress and the borders should be in such shabby state yet the inner parts of France and the Roman Empire are unaware of it. Elisa also finds it odd that the lord has refused to take off his helmet this entire time. Cube pipes up, mentioning the faint traces of magic all around them. It’s as if they’re in the middle of a Witch’s labyrinth. Elisa admits that Cube was helpful for once as she orders Pernelle to cast a reveal spell. Pernelle reminds her she’s an alchemist, not a mage. But she can at least briefly negate a curse if that will do. Elisa tells her to hurry up and do it as Pernelle dispels the labyrinth. The group finds they are still in the forest, but the fortress has disappeared. The air grows thick around them once more as they turn to find the lord has been revealed to be one of the soldier-like Familiars. Elisa transforms and takes on the group of Familiars. She eventually defeats them and stands to catch her breath. Pernelle thinks somethings not right, since only a powerful Witch should have been able to cast illusions on all of them like that. But it seems this was only the labyrinth of a Familiar, not a Witch. Elisa is upset to hear she was tricked by a lowly Familiar and almost handed her letter off to him. Cube says it was very unusual for a Familiar to act that way, and warns them that France is roaming with Strange Witches and Familiars everywhere. The Witches and Familiars are also brazen enough to roam throughout France in broad daylight, not even hiding in labyrinths. There are enough of them that they’ve begun to pour into the Roman Empire. However, in the Roman Empire they still seek to hide themselves in Labyrinths which makes them that much harder to detect. Elisa reminds them they have a mission to complete and need to make up for lost time. Cube wonders if the fortress they’re heading to even exists. He’s never heard of a fortress in this particular area, nor has he heard any of the place names she was given. Pernelle also doubts this fortress and lord even exist. Elisa wonders if she was sent on a trap and yells at Cube for not telling her all of this earlier. Pernelle apologizes to Elisa as she didn’t even notice until now. She asks to see the letter and notices that the royal seal on it is a fake, albeit a well-crafted one. On top of that, this was a mission that was too dangerous for an ordinary knight so it must have been a trick meant to appear like it came from the court. Because Elisa is the daughter of the Empress, it means there will be people who will try to do her harm. The mission must have been a trap. Either someone wanted Elisa dead or else they simply wanted Elisa gone so they can strike in her absence. Many important nobleman and priests visit the Order of the Dragon, including its founder the empress Barbora. Worried something may happen to her mother, Elisa orders Pernelle to transport them back to court immediately. Pernelle is ready to comply, but with two people and such a large distance it will take her some time to prepare the spell. As Pernelle prepares for their departure, Elisa wonders if there isn’t a traitor amongst the Order of the Dragon. She wonders if maybe someone was jealous because she often used her Magical Girl powers to their benefit. Her mother’s influence was growing in court as well so any number of power-hungry nobles could be behind this. All of this reminds her of the days when she would get caught up in the feuds at the Imperial court. Several years earlier…: Transylvania – Oradea Outskirts Pernelle asks Elisa if she was thinking about her past. Elisa responds that she was remembering the time when Pernelle sweet-talked her into becoming a Magical Girl. Pernelle says she never sweet-talked anyone, but Elisa held a very rare quality that was not found in many people. Not only that, Pernelle gifted her with her prized weapon that she forged specially. Elisa says those are two different things. She’s more mad over the fact that they never mentioned the fate she would have to bear as a Magical Girl. Cube tries to remind Elisa that she was the one who cut their conversation short only to have Elisa interrupt him midsentence and shoot him with her firearm. She tells the anxious Pernelle not to worry, since she missed his vital spots on purpose. Pernelle finishes the preparations for the spell, but not before healing Cube’s wounds first. Holy Roman Empire – The Order of the Dragon Headquarters Since the only person Elisa trusts is her Uncle Oswald who is currently out of the country, Elisa takes it upon herself to find the traitor. She begins by gathering suspects and interrogating them separately. As she questions one soldier, she learns that her Uncle was similarly given an order that would have him leave the country. Considering Elisa’s letter came shortly after, it’s possible they were trying to separate the two as part of their plan. Elisa figures the letter that Oswald received was also a fake. Now there are even more suspects, and the feeling of dread that Elisa has had ever since they returned began to grow further. Suddenly, the truth dawns on Elisa from out of nowhere and she tells Pernelle to round up the main suspects for questioning. The first suspect is the soldier who gave her Uncle Oswald his orders in a falsified letter. The soldier claims he received the letter from the court representative, who is the second suspect. The third suspect is the soldier who gave Elisa a falsified letter. The final suspect is the maiden who warned Elisa about the phantom knights before they departed. Elisa takes out her magic firearm that was crafted by Pernelle. She tells the suspects that the barrel has been loaded with magic bullets that will not harm a pure person. Using this, she will test the purity of each of the suspects until the culprit is shot dead. She asks those who believe whole-heartedly in their innocence to step forward, but none of the suspects do. She transforms into her magical girl state and cocks her gun. Pernelle asks her if she’s really going to shoot them here, but Elisa claims they were all guilty except for the maiden. She shoots the three soldiers, causing the barrier they were in all along to dissipate. The soldiers drop their illusions, revealing themselves to be phantom knights. The maiden warns Elisa to flee from the ghosts, reminding Elisa in the process that normal people can’t see Familiars. Elisa assures her she’ll be fine and orders her to run and hide while she takes on the phantom knights. Some of the soldiers that were caught in the barrier are also frightened by the invisible beings that Elisa was fighting. Elisa tells them to stand and fight, asking them to recall their pride as members of the Order and calling the maiden braver than them. The soldiers stop their panicking and return to Elisa’s side. Elisa continues to battle the Familiars, but she’s outnumbered. She calls out to Pernelle to cast a spell of detection to allow the soldiers to see the Familiars so they can help her in her fight. Pernelle does as she’s told and the soldiers soon jump into the fray, beating the Familiars alongside Elisa. With the fight over, the soldiers ask for forgiveness for running from an enemy. Elisa says their boldness in fighting the Familiars has redeemed their initial cowardice. Some of the members of the Order may be a little “weak in the knees” but at least they know there isn’t a single traitor among them. She gives her deepest gratitude to the maiden for giving her sound advice. Pernelle can’t believe that French Familiars were able to penetrate as far as the stronghold where the Order stays. Elisa says it was all thanks to her tracing the faint trace of magic from earlier and following the trail. After that, it was easy for her to detect the three Familiars and that they were actually in a barrier. The thing about the magic bullets was just to buy her time to dispel the barrier. Seeing as how the maiden didn’t avoid the bullets either served to help prove her innocence as well. Cube could understand the Familiars manipulating the members of the Order once they were in their labyrinth, but normally Familiars don’t target a specific person. He wonders if maybe someone lured the Familiars over with that purpose in mind. Elisa says it’s possible, before she reminds him not to butt in to other people’s conversations and prompting Cube to run away in haste before he gets shot at again. A solider then approaches Elisa with the news of her uncle’s return and his being accompanied by the Empress Barbara. Elisa hurries to meet with them. Elisa receives her orders from her mother the Empress. She is to go to France to ascertain the strength of “La Pucelle”. If she truly is a “messenger of God” sent to help crown the legitimate king of France, then they are to help her in any way possible. Elisa is reminded of the blinding light she saw that day emanating from France and wonders if that has anything to do with her latest mission. Elisa leaves, closing the door behind her. The Empress remarks on what a fine young lady Elisa has grown in to, doubtless the result of Oswald’s influence in her upbringing. Oswald is humbled by her kind words and tells the Empress of his intentions on accompanying Elisa on her journey to France. It is May 7, 1429 on the outskirts of Orléans at Fort Tourelles. Elisa looks from afar as Tart and Riz battle with Corbeau. |

Trivia
- The official English translation has her name spelled "Elisa", however the katakana shows it spelled za rather than sa.
- Her Magia is based on the attack of the same name she used against Lapin's witch form in Chapter 13.
- It is also German for "The Dragon Lindworm". A lindworm is a type of serpent dragon. This could also link to her links with dragons (Includes her doppel)
- Her witch/doppel name is german for 'A Red Dragon'. A red dragon is also prominently featured in the Bible book of Revelation as being representative of the Devil.
- It may look like Eliza is riding her dragon-formed doppel, but her lower abdomen seems to be fused with it, hidden by her skirt.
- On her Doppel's carriage is written the Hungarian proverb "Szégyen a futás, de hasznos" ("Running away is shameful, but useful"), upside-down and reversed.
