Devil Homura (悪魔ほむら, Akuma Homura) is the form Homura Akemi takes at the end of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Rebellion-.

She transforms after seperating Ultimate Madoka into just the Law of Cycles and the Madoka she used to be before becoming god.

Appearance

Devil Homura's design is comparable to that of Ultimate Madoka, the colors greatly contrast, as she is mainly black and purple while Ultimate Madoka is white and pink. Homura calls herself the devil when comparing herself to Madoka, this can be seen in her design. Devil Homura wears a long, dark purple tattered dress that opens up in the front, just below her waist, and comes up her chest. The sides of this dress are cut out, and the top has a "tear" which most likely represents a broken heart. Devil Homura wears long, dark purple gloves and has a fluffy choker around her neck. Out of her back sprouts wings that represent those of a fallen angel, further representing the devil. She has long, black hair and has a deep red bow tied over her head. Lastly, Devil Homura wears long, purple stockings with a diamond design and formal black shoes that open up near the base of the foot.

History

In Rebellion

After most of the events of Rebellion, where Homura is trapped by Kyubey to experiment, and she is later saved by the Holy Quintet, she lays on the ground, with her Soul Gem fully darkened. Mami and Kyoko wait with her, until Ultimate Madoka appears with Sayaka and Nagisa. As she gets ready to take Homura's Soul Gem, and take her into the Law of Cycles, Homura catches her hands. Her dark Soul Gem starts to take on a different color, and as she talks about her feelings towards Madoka, she rips her away from Ultimate Madoka, splitting her into her old self and the Law of Cycles.

The new curse inside of her Soul Gem spreads outside of it, swallowing the whole Universe in what seems like a barrier. Homura then crushes her Soul Gem, and creates her Dark Orb, a seemingly new form of the Soul Gem.

As Kyubey floats in space, he questions what is happening and where he is. Homura then starts talking to him, explaining that this isn't the first time she's seeing this, as this is the second time she is seeing the world being rewritten. Kyubey questions what she is and what her motives are, she explains that the thing inside of her Soul Gem isn't a curse, rather a feeling stronger than Hope and Despair, Love. She transforms into her Devil form and explains that if she ripped god (Madoka) away from heaven (The Law of Cycles), then she can be called a Demon now. Kyubey complains that human emotions are too complicated, but Homura catches him, saying that she still has a role for him in her new world, taunting him.

The new world is created, in which everything seems normal at first. As Mami walks to school, Homura is shown talking to someone at a table, but she is invisible to everyone around her, she trips over a mug, which Mami hears, but she doesn't see anyone. Kyoko sitting on a tree, feeding some Liese birds, sees children's hands waving, presumably asking for her apples. She throws the apples to the kids, but Homura shakes her head and the apple ends up in the small stream, which suprises Kyoko. Sayaka then confronts Homura, being the only one able to see her, she yells at her, angry that she took a part of the Law of Cycles for herself. Homura explains that she only took the small part of Madoka, before she turned into the Law of Cycles. She proclaims that she is "Evil", a presence with the purpose of defying the god's rules. Sayaka summons her Witch, getting ready to fight, Homura says that when all the Wraiths get destroyed, she might become their enemy. With a clap of her hands, she makes Sayaka forget her connection to the Law of Cycles, taunting her that she might turn Madoka against her.

When Madoka transfers to Mitakihara Middle School, she is seen observing the class. When Madoka is ambushed by students, all asking her questions, Homura appears as a normal student, asking to show Madoka arround. They walk in the hallway just like in Episode 1, Homura asks what it feels like to be back in Mitakihara. Madoka starts explaining how nostalgic everything feels, and how it looks as if nothing has changed. Madoka then stops walking, realizing that she's right, and that the only thing that changed, is her. She starts transforming into Ultimate Madoka as she realizes that she isn't supposed to be here, but Homura hugs her. Homura tells her that she is perfect the way she is, severing her connection to the Law of Cycles. After that, Homura menacingly asks her how much she values this world, Madoka answers that she values it, and believes that breaking its rules is wrong and selfish. Homura tells her that one day, they might be enemies too, but for now she takes off her ribbons and ties Madoka's hair with them.

In the post-credits scene, Homura is shown dancing atop hill with her Dark Orb. She is suprised when she hears something in the grass, but realizes that it's Kyubey, and seemingly tortures him.

In Magia Record

Devil Homura is a playable character in Magia Record. She was released on the game's sixth anniversary. Additionally, an April Fools event released Devil Homura-chan.

In Magia Exedra

Devil Homura is a playable character in Magia Exedra. She has 1 Kioku: Falsified Phenomena, released on January 30th 2026.

An existence that disturbs providence and lays waste to this world. She has stolen a fragment of the "Law of Cycles" and thus calls herself a "Devil". While forcing the Incubators to cooperate with her, she's more than willing to turn against the Magical Girls she was once involved with.

Trivia

• In Rebellion, Homura implies Ultimate Madoka to be a goddess. Therefore, she says, the one cast away from her light must be the devil.
  • Additionally, her final transformation into Homulilly has heavy symbolism in the way of lizards or salamanders. Lizards have been associated with the devil in many works of literature. Salamanders have been mythologically linked to fire, see below.
    • In the Concept movie, Devil Homura is referred to as "The Lizard Girl".
  • Homura previously attended a Catholic school before transferring to Mitakihara Middle School. This means she would at least have some knowledge of the story of the devil.
• Fan names for Akuma Homura sprung up prior to her official confirmation include "Homucifer" (a portmanteau of Homura and Lucifer), Devil Homura, Homukuma and Akumura (both portmanteaus of Homura and akuma).
• Before being formally announced in Magia Record on August 20th, 2023, her release was hinted by the Magia Record 6th Anniversary ARG.
