Mel Anna (安名メル, Anna Meru) (NA localization, given name also romanized as Meru (メル) in JP server content, and Melu (メル) in Magia Archive Volume 2), was a playable character in the 2017 mobile game Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record. Mel first appeared only in a flashback, when Iroha and the others relive Mifuyu’s memories while inside the Memory Museum. She was later released as a playable character in May 2018. She is a magical girl with a penchant for reading tarot cards and telling fortunes.

Summary

A Magical Girl who lives by her daily divinations which she tells every morning. If the fortune's good, she's very optimistic. If it's bad, she'll lock herself in her room and won't even go out to hunt Witches. She loves fortune-telling, but as her predictions always come true, she's forbidden to do it by other Magical Girls.

Doppel Description

The Doppel of disclosure. Its form is a fortune teller. The master of this emotion is both client and contractor. She believes her Doppel, which predicts one’s destiny in perfect clarity, to be her true inner power, and she does not deny any of the destinies it predicts. This Doppel is connected to its master’s wrist and back, and constantly measures her pulse in order to synchronize with it. By fully synchronizing their movements and senses, the two of them can predict an utterly unshakable destiny. The result of the prediction is displayed in the Doppel’s eye, and is determined by the type and direction of the tarot card shown within its pupil. Barring a truly extraordinary effort, it’s impossible for the master and Doppel to escape from a destiny they’ve predicted.

Witch Description

The witch of fortune tellers. Her nature is disclosure. A witch who single-mindedly attempts to uncover the truth within the various destinies that are consolidated in her barrier. Able to gaze across past, present and future, she feels joy at the fact that all destinies are hers alone to know, and ceaselessly turns over the tarot cards atop her table. If a visitor were to arrive, she would believe them to be someone who’d recognize her power, and would gladly unveil the truths enclosed within them. But the truths that become visible aren’t always happy– and on top of that, accepting them as truth will prompt the witch to turn you into her apprentice, rendering escape impossible. If you were to oppose her, it’s said that she would show you every suffering imaginable.

The following is a summary posted on 4chan's /pmmm/ general by Summary Anon. Mel introduced herself as a fortune teller from the East region of Kamihama, boasting her readings are 100% accurate. She read her fortune today and decided to stay at home since it warns her of lethal danger. Her mom is used to it and is preparing to phone the school when Kanagi drops by. Kanagi laughs at Mel's insistence on the outcomes of her reading and says that bad stuff only comes because she believes her readings are true and drags her off to school as usual. On the way, they sense the presence of a witch, and Kanagi dragged the unwilling Mel into the barrier to deal with the witch. The witch and familiars only target Mel during the fight, and in a panic she lets it run away. She apologizes to Kanagi for wasting her mana and says that this is proof of the accuracy of her reading, but Kanagi brushes it off as superstition. Suddenly, a car rushes towards Mel in an attempt to run her down. She managed to dodge, but the girls realize that it is possessed by the witch, and it is targeting Mel only. The poor girl runs off screaming that she hates Kanagi for this. In panic, Mel has run west and into the Mizuno region. Yachiyo saves her, but Mel was frightful at first since she remembered Kanagi warning her not to get close to the west and to minimize contact with Magical Girls belonging to the west since many look down on people from the East side of town due to class discrimination. Luckily the soothing atmosphere and kind personality of Yachiyo has calmed Mel down and she thinks she is in luck since the Magical Girl she encountered is kind. However, Mel begins to panic when she realizes she is a long distance away from home which is safe and worried that she might really die on the way back. Seeing her worry, Yachiyo comforts the girl with soothing words and invites her to her place. Mel accepts the offer with some worry, but she understood Yachiyo's intentions once they reach her place and Yachiyo tells her to treat this as her home. Her readings advised her to stay home, so Yachiyo's offer to let Mel stay for the day essentially gave her a lifesaving shelter. Overwhelmed by gratitude and at Yachiyo's trust of her readings, Mel requests to join her team. While Yachiyo is fine with this, she worries about unnecessary misunderstandings since Mel is from the East, so she calls Kanagi and informs her of the situation. Kanagi gives her permission and thinks that joining Yachiyo will be good experience for Mel. From this day on, Mel became part of the Yachiyo team. She quickly bonds with Yachiyo, Mifuyu, Tsuruno, and Momoko. One day, Mel visited the Nanami household as usual, but more excited than normal. She explains that her readings for today were all positive and solved all the problems of her clients. She offered to help read the team's fortune. Yachiyo is skeptical since they have no idea how Mel's readings work, so Mel forcefully coaxes Yachiyo into a fortune-telling session. The readings say there will be a breakthrough in her career, and the team takes the news with suspicion. That evening, Yachiyo announces with disbelief that she was chosen by a nationwide famous magazine to pose for their special issue on the cafes of Kamihama. Yachiyo was chosen mainly because she is a local. Other than Tsuruno, who decides to heed Yachiyo's advice, Mifuyu and Momoko ask Mel for a reading. Mifuyu is worried about the coming up matchmaking arranged by her family while Momoko is worried about her results. Both recieve positive readings from Mel. On the evening where Mifuyu has attended the matchmaking, she announces joyfully that the person introduced is a man of integrity and is glad that she has attended that session. While she still is a high-schooler and has no intention of marriage, she is relieved that at least the partner is a good person. Momoko also passed her mid-terms with flying colors and is relieved since her grades were falling due to witch-hunting. Seeing good results from the others, Tsuruno finally breaks her resolve and asks Mel for a reading. Mel declines for the day since her own reading says that any further reading will only cause negative results, but Tsuruno insists that her luck will negate any negative results. Reluctantly, Mel reads Tsuruno's fortune for tomorrow, and the results are negative. She will be plagued with stomachache the next day, so she advises her to be careful with what she eats and drinks the next day. On the evening of the next day, Mel arrives at Yachiyo's place as usual and sees Tsuruno lying flat from eating too much. Yachiyo and Momoko inform her that Tsuruno has not eaten or drank the whole day out of fear, and finally broke her resolve due to hunger, deciding to eat at Yachiyo's place where at least she can be safe if anything happens. Mel warns her that it is hard to prevent the future that she has read, and Mifuyu wonders if the event would be related to people around Tsuruno. The team enters an uncomfortable silence and Tsuruno realizes that it might be related to Banbanzai, and having stomachaches at a restaurant would usually mean food poisoning, and that would be disastrous. The team rush to Banbanzai immediately. For some reason, the shop is filled with costumers and Tsuruno's dad is glad that she returned on time since he is so busy that he didn't even have the free time to call her. The team wonder if this is influenced by the reading since a busy shop that has a lack of hands might lead to hygiene accidents. Tsuruno shows some skills, like catching flies with chopsticks and carrying multiple plates of food, but she caught sight of Momoko slipping and pushing something into a bowl of ramen that Yachiyo has taken away to serve. She asked her dad about the object, and her dad answers that it was laxative that was prescribed to him by the doctor. He wondered why it was there since he remembered leaving it at home. Tsuruno realized they would be in deep trouble if the costumer eats the ramen, so she interrupted the serving and ate the ramen herself. The laxative comes into effect and she is stuck on the toilet for the rest of the day. As the rest of the team are returning to Yachiyo's place, Yachiyo asks Mel why she became a Magical Girl, but tells her it is okay if she does not want to answer if she feels it is personal. Mel answers that she wasn't a big fan of fortune-telling actually. However, she just happened to read one day that she would be in trouble and the lucky item, an umbrella, would save her. As she foretold, while she was returning an umbrella, she was nearly hit by a falling object, but she opened the umbrella which managed to save her. She was surprised by the effectiveness and wanted to learn the art to help others. Unfortunately, what she learned was not exactly accurate, and some of her school mates even made fun of her. One case had a group of them ignoring her advice and insist on buying crepes after school, and they got harassed that day by a delinquent who was notorious citywide due to crepes. Mel wanted to help people but realized she can only go so far from books, and Kyubey took the opportunity to get her to contract. She wished to have the ability to read fortunes at 100% accuracy, and realized she can do it using her own method when she lay her hands on her tarot cards. The next day, Mel sees a sign which forbade fortune-telling at Yachiyo's place. She is indignant at first, but mellows down in understanding after Yachiyo analyzed that her magic is not 100% accurate at predicting the future, but instead has the ability to twist the future into the result of her readings. Mel laments that she made the wish to help others avoid trouble, but never expected that it would cause trouble instead. Thus, she accepts Yachiyo's request not to read fortunes anymore since she cannot control the outcome. However, she made a reading in secret, and saw a circle formed by Magical Girls. The keystone to the formation is entering Yachiyo's life in the form of a star, and she prayed that the star will light Yachiyo's path into the future, and that the future will be a warm and comfortable one. Back in the modern day, Yachiyo smiles as her family had their emotions being led around by the results of fortune-telling on TV and them happily looking for a lucky item for Felicia who has the worst fortune, and realizing that she already has it: a hammer. Yachiyo wonders with a smile if Mel will agree that this level of fortune-telling is enough to bring joy to the reader, and we end the story with the memory card featuring Mel and Kanae, but with just Mel shown.

Winter Outfit

Mel was invited to go with Kanagi Izumi today. She meets up with Kanagi outside of her apartment complex, though she makes it clear to Kanagi from the start that she’s not interested in Witch-hunting with Kanagi of the East since she’s Yachiyo’s teammate after all (Yachiyo being in charge of the Western half of Kamihama). Kanagi says that’s no good since she can’t guarantee her safety if she’s by herself. Even if she is on Yachiyo’s team, it’s okay for her to hunt in the East if she chooses so isn’t it a good idea for them to team up? Mel pouts and accuses Kanagi of being nosy. Kanagi apologizes as she didn’t realize she was meddling. Mel scowls and says if that’s all then she’s going home. Kanagi tells her to wait and explains that all she wanted was to get along with her. She had heard there were fewer Witches in the West recently so she thought it would be a good opportunity for Mel to purify her Soul Gem. Mel admits that’s true but then calls her nosy again. Even so, she eventually relents when she sees how disappointed Kanagi is and says she’ll go with her this one time. Kanagi brightens up and tells her how happy she is to hear that.

Before they head out, she asks Mel if she wants to stop by her house first but Mel says she’s all confused now. First Kanagi wants her to go out with her then she tells her to go home. Kanagi admits that the reason was because she thought her winter clothes would be too light and Mel might catch a cold if she didn’t stop off at home first to get a jacket. Mel once more accuses her of being nosy and says she’s too full of energy to catch a cold. But just as she says this she sneezes loudly. Kanagi just stares at her as Mel admits her sneeze had bad timing. Kanagi tells her not to put on a false bravado and offers to lend her her gloves. Mel says this is the reason she can’t stand being around Kanagi: it’s like being suffocated by her mom. Kanagi tells her to wait and asks if she likes owls before handing her an owl-themed ski mask. Mel looks at the mask and says she would look like some kind of pro wrestler wearing it and gives it back to Kanagi. She tells Kanagi that she’s too pushy and is always acting like she knows what Mel is thinking but Mel insists she won’t budge. As Mel finishes her outburst she begins to take off and head home. She then stops midtracks as she realizes that this whole time Kanagi has only been concerned about her and was trying to be kind. She can see how hurt Kanagi was by her actions so she heads back and apologizes to Kanagi for her behavior. She admits she was just being selfish and got kind of heated up. She explains she’s just at that rebellious age so she instead thanks her for inviting her to hunt Witches with her. Kanagi looks relieved and says she’ll meet up with her tomorrow. Mel is glad she was able to apologize to her.

Halloween Costume

Mel Anna had become a Witch and should therefore be dead, however Kanagi Izumi had recreated her from her memories of the original Mel. The duplicate knows she’s not the real one and that Kanagi is attempting to do something by making everyone create sugar skulls, but as a replica there’s nothing she can do. Still, rather than sit around and be bored she may as well do something fun so she finds the duplicate of Kanae Yukino and urges her to go Trick-or-Treating with her. Even though she’s a duplicate, she still considers herself Mel so she decides that the first people they should hit up for candy will be the girls in Mikazuki Villa, their kouhais.

The two head over to Mikazuki Villa and greet Tsuruno when she opens the door. Both Mel and Kanae yell out trick-or-treat as Iroha and the others greet them at the door as well. Mel demands candy and threatens to get mischievous with them if they don’t hand something over but Tsuruno says they have no sweets to give other than the sugar skulls that they must hand over to the lord of the castle. Mel feels let down that Kanagi has ruined even this for her so she decides she’ll have to play a trick on them after all. Since Kanae also yelled trick-or-treat she’ll have to help with the punishment too and the two girls hold down each member of Mikazuki Villa and tickle them relentlessly. Once they’ve unleashed their punishment on everyone (including a second round of tickling for Tsuruno), Mel bids them goodbye for now and promises to tickle them some more the next time she gets a chance.

In Mifuyu’s memories, Mel talks about the fortune-telling she did with tarot cards and how it was her lucky day. After fighting a witch and being overpowered, Mel tries to use fortune-telling but couldn’t due to using too much magic. After the witch tries to attack Yachiyo, Mel blocks it causing her to run out of her remaining magic. The other magical girls have no grief seeds to offer her and, after a tearful goodbye, Mel’s soul gem becomes corrupted and turns into a grief seed.

Powers and Abilities

Mel possessed the unique ability of Destiny Alteration, also known as "Future Guidance," which allowed her to manipulate the future. She is able to use her unique style of fortune telling to affect the future based on her Tarot readings, however she appears to have no control over whether she gets a good or a bad outcome. In battle, she can summon wind cyclones and create devastating electrical storms.

As a witch, Etteilla also gains the ability to float effortlessly. She hovers above the ground, balancing her entire weight on her index finger.

Etymology

The characters of her last name mean "safe" or "cheap" (安) and "name" (名) respectively.

Trivia

Etteilla was the pseudonym of Jean-Baptiste Alliette, a French occultist who was the first to popularise tarot divination to a wide audience in 1785, and therefore the first professional tarot occultist known to history who made his living by card divination. It is the inverse of his name.
Alongside Nagisa and Ui, she is the third girl to have both her doppel and witch form appear (as an enemy) in the game.
Her Soul Gem appears to be missing in her 5 star art. Whether this is a reference to her death or simply an error remains unknown.
Etteilla's tarot cards are written in runes, and the art is slightly changed as well compared to the tarot deck Mel uses. The design on the back of the cards is also upside down.
In the second Magia Archive book, her name is given as 'Melu Anna', which is presumably an error.
She shares the same voice actress with Kagome Satori.
