Summary
A Magical Girl of medieval France who serves in the war and attends to all of Tart's needs. She is the daughter of Captain "La Hire", who is a comrade-in-arms of Jeanne d'Arc. Though normally a kind and well-mannered girl, her fury cannot be stopped when she becomes angered.
Doppel Description
The Doppel of destruction. Its form is thundering wrath. The master of this emotion is seen by all as mild-mannered and kind. Every action or force exerted upon another object results in a "reaction", and since this Doppel is a reaction to its master's personality, it appears as rage incarnate. It will disintegrate anything that stands in its path; the more her heart yearns for peace, the more violently its rage will gush forth. It would be wise not to underestimate it just because it allows you to strike it without fighting back.

In the present, Melissa and Iroha cower inside a church as the walls shake from the sounds of howls. The two girls wonder aloud if they'll ever escape. Melissa explains how they got there in a flashback. Melissa is the servant to Tart during her travels in France. She is the daughter of La Hire, whose nickname means the Wrath of God. One day, the soldiers cheer their most recent battle victory as La Hire asks Melissa to bring more wine. She obliges all the soldiers who also compliment her cooking on last night's meal. They try to come up with some other new meals they could try as Yachiyo and Iroha watch on. Cube tells them that Melissa has been raised on the battlefield since she was young and knows everything from serving supper to tending to the sick. As Iroha admires Melissa's many talents, Melissa comes up to them and informs them she is done with her kitchen duties. The two are surprised that she can see Cube, who explains that Melissa is able to see him due to her potential as a Magical Girl. As much as Cube would like to persuade her to contract, he doesn't push the issue due to not wanting to anger Tart. Yachiyo is surprised to hear this, and Melissa explains Tart is very kind and wouldn't want to see her friends put in danger, much to Yachiyo's relief. Melisa remembers what she came for and asks them for a favor. She wants Yachiyo and Iroha to be her escorts. One of her responsibilities is procuring rations and food supplies and, while she normally goes with other adults, she wants their help in protecting them from the many Demons that plague the route. Yachiyo agrees and is about to go inform La Hire, but Melissa had already brought it up to him and gained his permission. Yachiyo wonders at Melissa's great planning talents as well, but Melissa only wants to do as much as she can to support them since she cannot fight in the battles like they can. She considers contracting for the ability to fight on their level, but Iroha would rather she didn't. The next morning they set out towards the fortress for supplies. They travel smoothly and stop for a break. Melissa prepares a small meal including freshly baked bread. She asks Yachiyo and Iroha about food from their home, and the girls explain they have foods from all over the world, including France. Iroha lists some of the French desserts they have available, but Melissa hadn't heard of a mont blanc before. Iroha explains it's a type of cake with lots of cream and powdered sugar. Melissa prods her for more info, as she'd like to attempt to make the dessert herself. She wants to expand her repertoire of meals in order to boost the morale of the soldiers who generally eat the same meals over and over. At the fortress, Melissa asks the guard for some barrels of wine as she wraps up her supplies list. She finished her errand much more quickly than Yachiyo or Iroha were expecting. However, it will still be two days before they can return to Tart, due to her and the batallion being on the move. Yachiyo suggests that Iroha and Melissa go to the nearby village and relax for a bit, since they're closer in age to each other, while she stays at the fort to keep an eye on things. Melissa is thrilled since there's a nearby church that's popular with pilgrims that she'd been wanting to visit for some time. Iroha is happy to escort Melissa to the church. The next morning the two set off on their journey to the church. As Meliss and Iroha rest, Iroha comments on how faithfully Melissa follows her religion. Melissa explains that churches calm her since she was raised in a church. Her mother died when she was very small and the local church took her in. She and her father didn't know the other existed for some time. Melissa states she grows red in the face up to her ears when she blushes and so does her father. Iroha wonders if Melissa shares the same temper that her father is nicknamed for. Melissa looks away before admitting there are a few times where her and her father weren't that different. She quickly assures Iroha that she's not that bad as Iroha looked worried about angering her. As the day draws to en end, the girls barely arrive at the outskirts of the village. A washed out bridge had added several hours to their trip and it was beginning to darken. The two girls arrive in town as night envelopes the land. They discuss finding lodges for the night and seeing the church in the morning when a village resident comes up to them and tells them there won't be a morning. Melissa asks what he means by that, when she learns that the village is now under English rule. Not only that, apparently the church is now haunted by a ghost, causing the village to abandon it. There are tales of the ghost of a saint, with a blood-chilling laughter followed by the sound of a bell ringing. Melissa is convinced it is just a rumor since nothing has been confirmed and is determined to put and end to this test of faith and tells Iroha she's decided to visit the church at once. A young girl from the village offers to show them the route and Iroha once more volunteers to guard them as their escort. The trio travel in the night as they soon arrive to the short road that will lead them to the church's gate. Melissa admits to the girl she is frightened of ghosts as Iroha agrees the path is creepier than she was expecting. Melissa isn't worried, since Iroha is with her, but Iroha admits she's never fought a Demon before, having never seen one. The young girl tells them the ghost is rumored to have appeared both inside and outside the church. They hear a rustling noise, then pounding. The air turns dark with miasma as Iroha's soul gem reacts to something. The trio look around for the ghost when they see a possessed soldier looming near them. Iroha and Melissa recognize the armor of the English soldier. Melissa takes the girl aside to safety as Iroha battles and defeats the soldier. As the air clears, Melissa figures that the rumored ghost must have been a possessed soldier, since the English had attacked the village recently. Melissa is excited to press onward to the church, as the young girl watches her with surprise. Inside the church, Melissa thanks Iroha for taking her all this way. Melissa finishes her prayer after having lit a candle. She turns and finds the young girl nervously waiting when the bells begin to ring. Iroha and Melissa begin to be frightened, thinking there might be a real ghost as no one else is in the church besides themselves and the girl. As the bells ring, Iroha hopes that it's just the normal ringing of the hour, but the young girl assures her that it's not the turning of the hour yet. They then begin to hear heavy footsteps, and a howling noise that pierces the air. Melissa and Iroha run in one direction but the noise follows after them. They run in the other direction only for the noise to be waiting for them there as well. Melissa vows to protect the young girl when she wonders why the ghost of a saint would attack people. The young girl cries out for help when Melissa yells out for the ghost to stop at once. The ghost's howling sounds confused as Melissa demands to know who is responsible for this prank. The young girl admits defeat as the hidden villagers come out into view. The villagers explain they had been put under English rule and wanted to make Tart turn back since they had heard she was heading in their direction. While they would normally have welcomed Tart into the village, they dared not risk the wrath of the English were they to find out. Most people who come into the village are fought off, but the villagers didn't have the heart to attack young girls, so they had made up the ghost story to scare off Melissa and Iroha. However, Melissa had found it unusual that a saint would attack a visiting pilgrim to a church, even if it was a ghost. The young girl marvels at Melissa and wonders if she could be La Pucelle herself. Melissa blushes and insists she is only Tart's servant. Her humility only serves to further convince the village that she is Tart and they insist she spend the night in the village. On the way back to the fortress the next day, Melissa apologizes to Iroha for the massive delay. Iroha says it's not a problem since they were able to return safe and sound. Melissa is still pleased she was able to pray at the church and she had many souvenirs from the villagers as well. Iroha wonders what kind of souvenirs they are since Melissa spoke with the village for a long time before receiving them, but Melissa won't spill her secret. Back at the fortress, Yachiyo welcomes them back and hears their tale. Melissa heads off to start preparing dinner for the troops, saying she'll need extra time to prepare. That evening, the soldiers enjoy their supper and the mont blanc that Melissa had prepared for them. Iroha tastes it and declares it to be as delicious as her favorite mont blanc back home. Melissa explains she added honey and had tweaked the recipe where necessary, but couldn't find chestnuts until she noticed some at the village they were at. She had negotiated with the villagers in order to procure some of the chestnuts for her cake. Cube appears and tells Melissa how much the soldiers enjoyed the cake and how high their morale now is thanks to her. He compliments her on her bravery, cooking skills, and other talents which make her the perfect candidate to contract as a magical girl. Iroha wonders what cooking has to do with being a Magical Girl. |
