Doppel Description

JING (Jing)

The Doppel of Absurdity.
Its form is a Jiàzi Huāliǎn.
The master of this emotion is both surprised by the brutality within herself, and slightly exasperated by her Doppel’s shallow way of thinking. This Doppel doesn’t pay attention to its surroundings, and has a habit of jumping to hasty conclusions about the things that enter its field of view. It may prance about with joy when it ought to be doing battle, and may seethe with anger when it ought to be enjoying itself. Despite being stubborn and reluctant to change its mind, it displays amazing practical strength when its behavior aligns with the situation. None can dodge its shapeshifting blade, and any attack will be deflected by its lotus flower’s lotus effect. Those who’ve seen it in combat have praised the sight as beautiful, as if it were dancing the entire time. Incidentally, it seems to think of its master as a kindred spirit who resembles its own absurd self.

As I read the letter, I thought about the other side of the ocean and popped it in my mouth.

I wondered if he had tasted it in the same way. I feel like I'm there with him, and the scenery unfolds behind my eyelids.

I can't wait for the doorbell to ring so I can enjoy such a moment today.

Side Story

Nayuta Satomi's Side Story

Part 1 opens with Nayuta fast asleep, dreaming of taking Touka down a notch by proving folkloric studies to be the strongest discipline...until Lavi gives her a rude awakening by humming obnoxiously like a mosquito. Lavi says she had no other choice; Nayuta is a very deep sleeper, and if she doesn't hurry, she'll be late for school. And given how they both go to school outside of Kamihama, Lavi orders Nayuta to wolf down her breakfast ASAP. After doing so, Nayuta requests Lavi to be nicer - they're both so close in age, but Lavi acts more like a stern stepmother than a gentle, kind maid. Lavi dismisses the request, saying she'll be less harsh on Nayuta when Nayuta cleans up her act.

Once at school in Takarazaki City, Nayuta's homeroom class begins with an exercise on "self-assessment." The teacher explains that future opportunities, such as job interviews or school applications, will require people to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and characteristics, and now is a good time for the student to learn how to evaluate themselves. For this assignment, the students are to form groups, write their understanding of each other and of themselves, and discuss the results they get. Nayuta evaluates herself as a quiet but diligent student who puts full effort into every task she's given...whereas her group members consider her someone who "hates losing," "speaks her mind," and is "super stubborn."

Nayuta is mortified. She protests she can’t really be like that, though her classmates elaborate with examples. For one, the students arranging the school festival's dance performance had originally voted for a joke song, but Nayuta turned against the crowd and fought back. Nayuta says she only did so because she herself didn't want the song, not caring what other people thought. Still, she does admit that, considering her persistent search for her father, despite all odds, "stubborn" may be an apt word to describe her.

After the exercise, the teacher discusses the Johari Window, a tool for evaluating one's personality and relationships. To summarize, the Johari Window posits there are four categories to how we perceive ourselves and others:

  1. Traits that self and peers perceive
  2. Traits that peers perceive but the self does not
  3. Traits that peers do not perceive but the self does
  4. The unconscious, or the traits neither self nor peers perceive

Through this, most people will, at the very most, acquire only a 50% understanding of themselves, and a mere 25% understanding of other people, unless we go out of our way to communicate with and understand each other. These statements begin to gnaw at Nayuta's mind.

After school, Nayuta bumps into Iroha on her way to the train station - both are pleasantly surprised that the other remembers them, and strike up a conversation. When asked why she's in Takarazaki, Nayuta explains that before moving to Kamihama, she lived here, and continues to attend school in town. Iroha remarks that she originally hailed from Takarazaki as well, and recognized Nayuta’s uniform. To even more surprise, they soon find that they both also just so happen to be in the same grade - their third year of junior high - which means Iroha can treat her as an equal than a senior (she had assumed Nayuta was a high schooler). Nayuta thinks to herself that while Iroha seems very quiet and shy at first blush, she’s actually quite good at socializing.

Their conversation turns to Nayuta’s father, and Nayuta soon requests to meet Yachiyo, what with their original meeting in Arc 2 Chapter 2 having been cut short - though the request is blurted out as demand instead. Nayuta immediately apologizes, saying she’s aware that she comes across as very rude and obnoxious, but Iroha thinks nothing of it - that wasn’t her impression at all. Besides, she completely understands where Nayuta is coming from, too; after all, they’ve both been in the exact same position, with Iroha’s quest to find Ui, much like how Nayuta is searching for her father. So that means they’re both two stubborn junior-high girls from Takarazaki who traveled to Kamihama in search of their loved one...they both realize that they truly have far more in common than they originally thought.

Nayuta goes with Iroha to Mikazuki. There, Yachiyo explains that unfortunately, she has no further info on Nayuta’s father. Tsuruno, though, asks if Nayuta can describe her dad’s appearance - perhaps one of them has crossed paths with him without realizing it. Nayuta shares a photo she has on her phone, and they proceed to get sidetracked this way and that - over her dad’s long hair (and Nayuta and Sana commiserating over the challenges of haircare), her dad’s schlubby, nerdy appearance, etc - but ultimately, no, none of them have seen them, not even Ui, who spent so many years at the Satomi Medical Center.

Felicia wonders out loud why Nayuta doesn't ask Touka. Yachiyo remarks she has a point - despite their enmity, surely they can find some common ground. Nayuta refuses, saying she cannot trust the information she gets from Touka, and apologizes for her stubbornness.

In part 2, we open with Lavi waking Nayuta once more. This time, Nayuta’s had a bad sleep - over breakfast, at Lavi’s prompting, she admits she’s been ruminating over Touka again, which inevitably stresses her out. And of course, if she tells herself to quit thinking about Touka, it makes her think of Touka even more.

Their conversation is interrupted by Mikage - who, in a shocking twist, actually rings the doorbell for once instead of barging in! It turns out she's very upset, explaining she got in a fight with Sudachi. In short, she and Sudachi were hanging out together, but Mikage kept zoning out. Sudachi noticed, and Mikage explained school was exhausting her, saying life would be so much easier if there wasn't any school. Sudachi took offense, saying she was jealous that Mikage got to go to school while Sudachi can’t ever go back. Mikage took offense to this in turn - Mikage has no friends at school, so it's boring, so if anything, she's the one jealous of how Sudachi can skip school without any problems. From there, they got into a row, and are still furious over it.

Nayuta remarks that even though Sudachi and Mikage fought, they're both at least far more kind than Touka, which prompts her to start venting about one of her memories that’s been eating at her - an incident where Touka mocked and bullied her over a complicated science problem. Mikage, though, whines that she’s the one who’s supposed to be complaining right now, not Nayuta; but Nayuta doesn’t just want to sit and listen to Mikage complain all day, and they start bickering and squabbling about it. Lavi, though, soon defuses the tension by serving them pudding.

After finishing her snack, Mikage realizes she lost the cute handkerchief she bought the other day - she must’ve lost it at the Tomorrow Shop. Since Nayuta and Lavi were planning on doing some shopping in the area, they all head out together - only to bump into Sudachi, who has the handkerchief with her. Mikage implies Sudachi must have stolen it, and they immediately start fighting again. Then, out of nowhere, Nayuta orders them both to calm down, saying they're both trying to make the other look bad, which confuses Mikage. Fortunately, Lavi quickly backs her up, explaining that since Mikage and Sudachi recently had a fight and are still high on their emotions, they're both trying to validate their feelings by making the other out to be wrong. Neither of them are necessarily bad or wrong here, but negative feelings about the other person are bound to warp their perception of each other. Nayuta relates this back to her school assignment - if you only look at the surface-level actions of another person, you can't see their true side.

Once things calm down and the girls calmly communicate their side of the story, it turns out Mikage had accidentally tucked her handkerchief in Sudachi's bag when they were hanging out together the other day. Sudachi, then, was at the Tomorrow Shop to hand it over to the owner to return to Mikage, but bumped into Mikage first. There’s no question why Mikage got their bags mixed up - they both match perfectly. That fact makes it obvious how close they both really are...and so the apologies begin.

Sudachi explains that back when she went to school, there were days she, too, dreaded going. She took Mikage's complaints as bragging in a way, even though she knows that wasn't Mikage's intention. Mikage explains that while she doesn't know the whole story of why Sudachi stopped going to school, she should have known how Sudachi would feel by dissing it, and should have kept her complaints to herself. They both apologize and immediately become best friends again, which is Nayuta and Lavi's cue to slip away.

Nayuta thanks Lavi for the assist - Nayuta’s attempts at mediation had floundered back there, but Lavi realized what Nayuta was trying to do and got things back on track. Lavi remarks that she was impressed by Nayuta in turn - in the short time they've lived together, her impression of Nayuta was that she was childish and whiny, but this incident demonstrates she's actually quite strong in her own right.

These words hit home for Nayuta. Once she gets home, she gets choked up and throws herself onto the couch. She explains to Lavi that she wants to "start over," even though it's impossible to do so now. She talks about how the Johari Window exercise in class has prompted her to look back at her stubbornness and all the missteps and mistakes she’s made because of it - such as how once she makes a judgment of someone’s character, she never changes her stance, and has lost many valuable relationships as a result. She intervened in Mikage and Sudachi’s fight not for any noble cause or personal code, but simply because she freaked out that they would lose their relationship the way Nayuta has lost hers...and seeing them make up so easily has made Nayuta feel even more terrible. Lavi asks what exactly Nayuta wants to "start over" with. For Nayuta, it’s her relationship with her parents.

Part 3 begins with an extended flashback, where Nayuta explains how her mother was incredibly strict (think of the "tiger mother" stereotype), and Nayuta resented her for that. We see an example of their dynamic in a memory from when Nayuta was little, where she came home with a score of 95 on her test. The class average was 75, and Nayuta was the fifth best in class, but her mom is angry that she didn’t get number one. Since Nayuta’s dad is a scholar, her mother says people expect Nayuta to follow in his footsteps. Since none of the other students have scholarly parents, Nayuta, therefore, should be the best in class. The fact she isn’t will make other people think Nayuta isn’t smart or doesn’t try hard enough, which then reflects poorly on the rest of the family. Nayuta's mom keeps snapping at her until Nayuta is crushed, then whisks her off to painting class. Nayuta doesn't want to go because she has a piano competition that weekend and wants a break, but her mother insists it's a poor excuse for slacking off.

Meanwhile, Nayuta's father is very gentle, laid-back, and kind. In that same memory, he comes home from a work trip to an exotic locale, bringing home a jar of seasoning as a souvenir. Nayuta's mom starts fussing and stressing about the ingredients, what meals it should be used for, the lack of an expiration date, and so on; Nayuta's father doesn't have a good answer to any of her questions. She complains that his whims make her life even harder, and his demeanor encourages Nayuta to slack off in her studies, and from there they start fighting. Basically, every day in Nayuta's home had screaming and fighting filling the walls, whether they came from her and her mom or her mom and her dad...until the day came that Nayuta "destroyed it."

In the build-up to Nayuta’s wish, we see how things became worse and worse - Nayuta loses a contest because with her packed schedule, given all the obligations her mom forces upon her, she had no time to practice for it. Her mom, however, only cares about the fact Nayuta lost...and notes to Nayuta how she's becoming the spitting image of her father - a girl with no will of her own.

Aside from that, the fights between her mom and dad reach a fever pitch, too, to the point Nayuta can’t stand another day living in that house - which prompts Kyubey to come knocking.

Nayuta (who seems fairly young when she made her wish, given she has the little kid sprite here instead of her current self) - considered several wishes before deciding on one. For example, she could have wished to be her mother’s ideal daughter...which would save Nayuta, but wouldn't stop the fights between her parents. She could wish for her dad to be as strong-willed as her mom, which would have him finally stand up for himself in their fights...but she doesn’t want her dad’s personality to change one bit. That gives her an idea, and she wishes to change her mom: She wishes for her mom to be as calm and gentle as her dad. She expects this to lead to a peaceful household...but instead, it gets her parents divorced.

You see, after the wish, her mom’s personality completely changed. Nayuta realized she only saw her parents' relationship on a shallow level, judging her mother as "bad" and her father as "good" without understanding the full picture. With a new personality, her mom realizes how shallow and obsessed with how others perceived her and her family...but also realizes that despite their arguments, she and her husband were actually in tune with each other, with their opposite temperaments having balanced each other out. Now, their connection and love has been lost. Nayuta's dad, however, is very calm about this abrupt change in personality, for he knows the exact cause - he explains that this could only be the result of a magical girl's wish (which Nayuta’s mom dismisses immediately).

We don't get to see the aftermath, however. We return to the present day, with Nayuta lamenting her actions and the fact she continues to make shallow assumptions, despite how they impacted her home life. Lavi, though, thinks nothing of it. She explains Nayuta, at least, is self-aware enough to realize she's making the same mistakes as before - and now that she’s woken up, she can change. She relays the fable of a man dropping a treasured sword into a lake, but in a rush decision, instead of marking the point he dropped it on the map, he marked the ship itself instead - so when the boat came to port, he, of course, couldn't find his sword. In short, the fable is saying that the world is constantly changing, and cautions against getting so caught up in habit and tradition that you lose sight of what's happening now. People grow and change, even if Nayuta hasn’t seen it for her stubbornness - and while she can’t go back and repair every relationship she’s lost, in some cases, she still has a chance to go back and fix things.

And of course, the first step is for Nayuta to reconcile with Touka. Nayuta apologizes for slapping Touka at the Coordinator's Shop in Arc 2 Chapter 2, and for her failure to see Touka for who she is now - she's grown beyond the petulant brat she was in Nayuta's childhood. Touka admits she was pretty awful in the past, and that her opinions have changed a lot. She respects Nayuta's dad now for pursuing his research despite all the opposition he’s faced - and since Nayuta's opinion on Touka has changed, Touka can do likewise. All is well...for about five seconds. Touka brings up Nayuta’s dad’s schlubby appearance, and wonders if his research isn't accepted because he looks like a total slob, prompting Nayuta to slap her again and storm home. Lavi, however, approves of Nayuta's course of action - and Nayuta realizes she and Lavi much more alike than she had assumed.

Close friends and Magical Girls who have taken the forms of the "Befana", witches from Italian folklore. They fly across the Kamihama sky on a broom, delivering Christmas sweets as presents. They are well-equipped with hot packs underneath their clothes to endure the harsh cold.

Side Story

Nayuta & Mikage's (Holiday) Side Story

The MGS kicks off with Nayuta being awoken to the sound of sleigh bells - it's Christmas morning, which makes it the perfect surprise alarm clock. Unfortunately, Lavi complains that her arm is so sore from shaking it that she'll never use it as an alarm again, much to Nayuta's disappointment. Before she can get mopey, however, Mikage arrives at their door - much earlier in the morning than usual. Lavi lets Mikage in, who explains that since they couldn't play together on Christmas Eve, she's going to spend all day with them today. Nayuta suggests they tackle their winter break homework together, but Mikage says they have no time for that - they ought to take advantage of the new Befana outfits that Yozuru and Sudachi coordinated for them!

Earlier, Sudachi had explained that their altered forms will go away once Christmas is over, since they're inconvenient for daily use; given that, Mikage wants to do something special with them today. (Nayuta remarks that Mikage is the sort who will want anything if you slap a "limited edition" label on it) Still, Nayuta agrees - they can do something in the spirit of Befana the witch. Lavi explains that the magic associated with the outfit can trace the thoughts and histories of those who give gifts, so they could possibly do something with that, but Nayuta notes how Coordinated outfits get their magic based on the will of the person receiving the adjustment; this magic has little to do with the Befana of folklore, and the girls really want to play Befana today.

When Mikage wonders about the story behind Befana, Lavi explains how she is a witch who hands out treats to good kids; that Befana, in search of Jesus Christ, uses starlight as her guide to stuff stockings with baked goods and gifts. Hearing this story gives Nayuta an idea - they can bake cakes and other treats and gift them to the other magical girls!

Mikage loves the idea, but Lavi realizes that means they need to buy ingredients and get to baking ASAP - Nayuta assures that according to her calculations, they should have enough time; Lavi deadpans that she doesn't trust the calculations of someone who's never been in a kitchen before. But onward they go with the plan.

At the store, Nayuta figures they should buy as much flour, sugar, butter and so on as they can afford, given they don't know how many people they will be baking for; it's an economical decision, too, given how long those goods last. Lavi points out that in doing so, however, they won't be able to afford short-term goods like milk, eggs, and fruit...but Mikage just so happens to notice a poster for a Christmas costume contest going on at the store. It turns out the doubles division winner gets a week's supply of high-quality eggs!

Lavi suggests Mikage and Nayuta participate in their Befana costumes, which flusters Nayuta. Nayuta accuses Lavi of doing this out of frustration of having her morning derailed and to embarrass Nayuta, but Lavi insists it's simply because she knows for a fact that Nayuta and Mikage will win. Nayuta complains to herself that sometimes, she has no idea what's going through Lavi's head...

Of course, Nayuta and Mikage are the clear winners of the costume contest, which flusters Nayuta but thrills Mikage! With the eggs secured, they can now afford all the other ingredients they'd like; Mikage is so happy they entered, and Nayuta admits she is as well, thanking Lavi for pushing her. Lavi is chuffed that her prediction was right - and shares the photos she took of the two of them.

There's no time to dawdle, though - they need to get home and get cooking wrapped up before noon! At this, Nayuta wonders how long it takes to bake a cake. After briefly taking some digs at Nayuta over her "calculations," Lavi explains that they're probably better off making cookies as well as cakes given the time and number of people they're baking for. Mikage notes that she last made cookies a long time ago with her mom; those cookies were an overnight recipe, but Lavi quickly finds recipes they can make in a much shorter span of time.

With all of the hard work Lavi has been doing, Nayuta insists that Lavi takes a break; she and Mikage can handle baking themselves. When Lavi shows trepidation, remarking that she only sees a cruel future for Nayuta and baking, Mikage assures her that if the two of them get into any trouble, their excellent teamwork will show them through, given that they're champions of the Doubles Division...

...And, of course, things quickly go south. Lavi remarks out loud that the sooner they give up, the sooner they can recover; and intervenes to put things back on track, much to Nayuta and Mikage's gratitude. Lavi starts off too rough on them, but after her students complain, she realizes it's not a productive way of teaching them, and switches from criticizing them to noting what they're doing right (which isn't much), and then offering suggestions on how to improve. Still, she was correct in that Nayuta’s future in baking was a grim one.

In the end, they have a bunch of various treats, and one beautifully-arranged strawberry cake; Lavi remarks its recipient will be very lucky. By the end of things, they have a great selection of treats for the other magical girls. Lavi brushes off Mikage and Nayuta's gratitude, saying "I was just doing my duty as a servant," and says she'll be cleaning the house while they distribute the goods. Nayuta says that when they give out the treats, she'll explain they're treats from all three of them. Lavi, after a pause, says it’s not necessary and asks that Nayuta and Mikage be on their way. On their way out, Mikage wonders if they actually need to put the baked goods into people's socks to follow the spirit of Befana - which Nayuta immediately vetoes. Act 1 ends with Mikage's voiced line, where she's eager to hand out treats to everyone.

In Act 2, the girls determine their stops - one place will be Puella Care, as thanks for Sudachi and Yozuru having helped them out during the event story. Afterwards, they'll go find where the Mikazuki squad is hanging out and give treats to them. As soon as they decide on that, though, Mikage asks that their first stop be Mitama's shop - so that's where they go. There, they bump into Maria and Konomi. Maria immediately starts doting on Mikage, and Mikage basks in the praise, while Konomi, once the conversation mentions Lavi, is in awe over the rumors surrounding Lavi.

Soon, however, Mitama has her eyes on the prize - the bag of sweets! Mikage eagerly explains how they're both playing Befana today, and hands out some treats to Mitama, Maria, and Konomi. They're all delighted by the treats - even better than what you could get in a restaurant, Konomi declares (who's also enamored by the tulip-like frosting on her cake). Mitama is astonished that Mikage has become so talented at baking now, and Mikage explains that Lavi taught her. Really, if it hadn't been for Lavi, they'd never be able to pull this off. Mikage uses this topic to wheedle Mitama for permission to see the Mikazuki girls to give them their goods, even though Mitama forbade her in the past from associating with girls from the Kamihama Magia Union. Mitama allows her to do so - getting a cake from her beloved little sister seems to be an excellent bribe.

Next up, the girls visit Mikazuki, greeting Iroha and Yachiyo at the door and explaining what they're up to. Iroha offers to fetch Touka, since she's right downstairs, but they know Touka is busy, and offer to leave her share of treats upstairs. Once inside, Mikage lights up at seeing Ui's gift this year, a makeup kit from Mikage's favorite fashion magazine; Ui offers to try it out with her. Meanwhile, Felicia wants to do battle with her stuffed animal versus Sana's, which cows Sana at first - but Mikage points out that Sana's present is a cat, while Felicia's is a half-fish monster, so clearly, the cat will win - and all of sudden, Sana is game to duel!

Nayuta chuckles about how much fun everyone seems to be having; it seems like Tsuruno and Yachiyo pooled their funds together to get everybody their gifts. All in all, everyone involved had a wonderful Christmas - Iroha asks whether Nayuta as well? After hesitating, Nayuta decides that she did, given the fun morning she had with Lavi. But that hesitation stands out like a sore thumb...

Speaking of Lavi, Iroha remarks that she doesn't really know what kind of person Lavi is, beyond "cool and mysterious," and thinks perhaps she's like Yachiyo when the two of them first met. Tsuruno remarks that people in the shopping district call Lavi the second Yachiyo Nanami; Yachiyo is pained by this, knowing the story that happened in The Peaceful Daily Life of Nayuta's House, and wonders how on earth she's perceived by the folks of the shopping district.

All this, however, makes Nayuta realize that she really doesn't know what kind of person Lavi is, either, even now. But her eyes drift onto the clock, and she realizes she needs to skedaddle if they're going to get everyone their gifts in time! Mikazuki thanks the duo one last time - with Iroha offering thanks on Touka and Nemu's behalf, too.

Their next stop is to Suitoku Temple - they owe the Tokimes a big favor from The Peaceful Daily Life of Nayuta's House event, though Nayuta is a bit nervous given that they're all Buddhists, and Christmas is a Christian holiday; fortunately, however, jolly Ryouko accepts the bounty. The Tokimes themselves actually had a Christmas party the other night, in fact - Asahi explains they had a great dinner, and then a Secret Santa gift exchange; Shizuka didn't really get what Christmas is all about, but she had lots of fun, and that's what matters. For their gift exchange, it sounds like everyone prepared a present without knowing who they would be trading their gift with, so they needed to have a good idea of a gift that's meaningful to themselves, but would also be meaningful to their friends. In the end, everyone loved their gifts (Chharu gave an onmyoji mystery novel to Ryouko; Ryouko gave a massage coupon courtesy of Ryouko herself to Chiharu; Asahi gave Chika camouflage loungewear; Chika gave Asahi homemade jerky; Shizuka gave Sunao a photo book about trains; and Sunao got Shizuka a kimo-kawaii (creepy-cute) T-shirt - which Sunao hadn't realized was creepy at all, but Shizuka is pleased as punch about it, anyway)

Seeing all this, however, puts Nayuta in a funk - the girls all get to live together, know each other deeply, and are very comfortable with one another - but what about her and Lavi...? Still, they have one more stop to go; after some chatter, the Tokimes thank them once more, the duo hurries on their way.

At Puella Care, the trio gratefully accepts their treats! Nayuta asks if they did a gift exchange like the other groups did,and it turns out that it was just gift-giving courtesy of Livia. Specifically, in the dead of the night, Livia dressed up as Santa, beard and all, to leave presents for Yozuru and Sudachi; except Livia slipped on some whipped cream and fell with a crash, waking everyone up. She's convinced she shattered Sudachi's belief in Santa...except Sudachi knew all along, and Livia realizes, much to her chagrin, that she didn't have to go through that trouble to begin with

Mikage points out that Mitama does just the same thing - she wears a fake Santa beard while on the job! Yozuru takes note of this, thinking perhaps it's necessary for standing out as a Coordinator, but Livia quickly disavows Yozuru of this notion. Still, Mikage notes how giving presents is an act of kindness - after a moment of consideration, Livia says it was a just reward for Yozuru and Sudachi for working so hard, of course, and so far away from home as well.

But this stings Nayuta once more - she herself is not celebrating with her family, but more importantly, neither is Lavi... After Puella Care thanks them, Mikage wonders where they'll head next - but Nayuta decides they'll be returning home. In her voiced line, Nayuta is happy to see everyone’s smiling faces...but...

In Act 3, the girls return home, exhausted. Lavi welcomes them inside, just asking that they not disturb her since she's still cleaning the house. Nayuta notes to herself that this is highly unusual - Lavi is usually all done by now - but soon, her mind drifts to all the people they'd met today. Everyone had a very merry Christmas, but... Lavi jars her out of her funk, asking if Nayuta's day went poorly. Quite the contrary, Nayuta explains; her only concern is...did she and Lavi have a happy Christmas, too, even though they couldn’t be with their families?

Lavi responds by saying it was great to lighten up everyone's days, but she thinks Nayuta may have given too much of herself - working hard for everyone else's sake today without rest, and without her family (and, as Nayuta realizes, without any presents for herself - her dad used to shower her with gifts this time of year). But even though it's late in the evening, Christmas isn't over yet. Lavi fetches two boxes, one for Mikage, and the other for Nayuta. It turns out they're both matching scarves, with Lavi having the third to complete the set. The scarf even matches the design of the one Nayuta's dad wears!

As the three members of the Operation: Find Nayuta's Dad squad, they all have matching gear now - and Nayuta is over the moon, taking Lavi into a crushing hug. Lavi apologizes for isolating herself from them today, but it was for the sake of finishing their gifts - Mikage notes that they’ve been getting poor Lavi into a lot of shenanigans lately, which is why Lavi couldn’t get them done on time.

Nayuta is just so happy with the present; Lavi thinks not even a child would be this thrilled to receive something. Nayuta asks "But don't you like receiving presents, Lavi?" to which Lavi says no - she's sixteen now; she's long grown out of that phase. In that case, Mikage and Nayuta decide they might as well give Lavi her gift now - which ends up being the perfect strawberry cake they made that Lavi praised! Nayuta thanks Lavi again; Lavi in turn points out again that she was just doing her job...and says that Nayuta makes for a strange master (but she smiles and thanks Nayuta, anyway). Nayuta remarks that Lavi is a strange servant herself - who would make handmade scarves for their master? Mikage realizes this is like the Tokime gift exchange, and when she puts it like that, Nayuta doesn't feel so jealous of the Tokime's living situation anymore.

Nayuta, full of joy, can't hold back any longer - she asks that they all wear their scarves to dinner together. Lavi chuckles and goes along with it, thinking about how they've become such a strange family - but a family nevertheless.

As the trio rests up after a hearty supper, Nayuta reflects on her relationship with Lavi - Lavi is an incredible girl of many talents, who always knows just what Nayuta is thinking...but she can't say the same in turn. It feels like she knows nothing about Lavi. In some of their conversations today, there was a certain bitterness in her statements (note: comments like "You're bound to fail", "I can only see a cruel future for you (and baking)", etc) The more Nayuta thinks about it, the less she understands...for example, why does Lavi bother herself over Nayuta so much to begin with? Is it really just because she was hired to do so? What are Lavi's true feelings? And in that moment, it hits her - her personal magic in this outfit allows her to trace a gift giver's thoughts and past...

It's about time for Mikage to go home, though - she's already very late in coming home, but she just doesn't want to leave the warm house for the cold outdoors. Nayuta clutches Lavi's scarf in hand, trying to steel herself to read Lavi's feelings...but time is running out. Lavi offers to escort Mikage home, and Nayuta realizes she can do it herself, then use her adjusted magic to scan Lavi's feelings without Lavi knowing...but in the end, she decides to stay home, bidding Mikage and Lavi a good night.

With that, the clock strikes midnight, and there's now no chance for Nayuta to use her magic. The mystery of Lavi's feelings remain. But...she's much more content with it than she had originally guessed. It'd be strange to crack open Lavi's feelings with magic like this - and in fact, she feels like a huge burden has been lifted from her shoulders. She thinks about how cold it is outside, and decides to have a hot cup of tea ready for Lavi when she comes home.

Himena takes Nayuta's power (along side Mikage and Alexandra's powers) with her ability to fight Lavi Himuro when she fused with all the Kimochi Stones. With this power, Nayuta can make her opponents lose their will to fight against her or other people.
