— Kaoru, Kazumi Magica Chapter 1.

Kaoru Maki (牧 カオル Maki Kaoru) is a major character from Puella Magi Kazumi Magica: The innocent malice.

An athletic football player, she lives with her two friends, Kazumi and Umika while their parents are working overseas.[2] She acts as an older sister figure, taking good care of things.[2] She is a Magical Girl, and a member of the Pleiades Saints.[3]

Powers and Abilities

Kaoru's final attack, Palla Di Cannone

Kaoru is a very talented football player and she applies the skills she has learned from the sport into her battles.[2] She mainly takes a more offensive role in battle as she is known to be skilled with inflicting the enemy with powerful punches and kicks, though most of her attacks are inflicted by her legs.[4] While teaming with Kazumi and Umika, her job is to stun the opponent with her kicks to provide the others with an opening.[4] Her most powerful attack is "Palla di Cannone" (Cannonball), an extremely powerful football kick, driving a ball onto the target with amazing strength.[4]

Kaoru's weapon is a staff that can split into two, creating a ball of energy.[5] She seems to rarely use it however as she mainly relies on her physical attributes more than her magical ones.

Kaoru using Capitano Potenza

Kaoru can also change parts of her body into a durable, metallic substance via an attack called "Capitano Potenza" (Captain Power).[6] In this state, she can withstand attacks that would otherwise fatally wound her, giving her increased defense and endurance.[6]

In the Magia Record universe, when her Soul Gem turns black Kaoru is able to summon her Doppel, Antonio.[7]

History

In Kazumi Magica

Before the manga starts, Kaoru was injured in a football game that left her on crutches. The girl who injured her is then rushed to the hospital Kaoru was recovering in. It turns out that girl was bullied for ruining Kaoru's career and tried to kill herself. Kaoru screams when she overhears this.

Michiru Kazusa sees Umika, Kaoru, Satomi, Mirai, Niko, and Saki, standing on a catwalk with a Witch's kiss on their necks. The girls standing on the catwalk all jump off together at the Witch's command. They are suddenly rescued by Michiru, who snags them in midair with ribbons and greets them cheerily. She then opens up the Witch's barrier and orders the six of them to fight off the Familiars, saving them from the Witch at the last second. She later takes them all back to her house.

The seven new friends eat together at Michiru's house. Michiru then tells the Pleiades how she became a Magical Girl. After listening to her story, Kyubey (Who appears as Juubey due to memory rewriting) mentions that the Pleiades can become Magical Girls as well, to which they all agree. Michiru cheers over having new friends. Kyubey tells the girls to give him their wishes; Kaoru wants to help the people that were hurt in the match where she had her injury. Kazumi asks her about her injuries, but Kaoru says she'll just return to the field with her current legs. Their contracts completed, Kazumi dubs the team the Pleiades Saints, and they happily fight Witches together for some time. One time, Kyubey asks about her strengthened Magical Girl body. Kaoru is very happy about it. Kazumi calls Kaoru's attack Capitano Potenza ("Captain Power"), and reveals she wants everyone to call their attacks, even recording them in a book.

One night, some time later, the Pleiades notice that Michiru is running late, having been told that she was bringing a new friend along. Juubey hurriedly calls them out to Asunaro Dome, where they see Yuuri Asuka becoming a Witch. After the battle, Kyubey explains the Witch conversion process and his nature as an Incubator to the stunned girls. Umika suddenly grabs Kyubey and slams her forehead against his, firing a laser between their eyes. He falls down, speaking in a different tone of voice and bewildered as to why she's upset. Umika explains that she has rewritten Kyubey's memories and prevented him from making any further contracts.

After Michiru turns into a Witch out of nowhere, Umika presents the plan to revive her. The Pleiades start to continuously clone her with the flesh of her Witch and their magic.

Volume 1

Kaoru first appears at the mall where Kazumi was being traded for a bomb. With few seconds left until detonation, she attempted to save the day by sending the bomb flying to the ceiling with a powerful kick: however, the bomb was a mere dud. After getting reacquainted with Kazumi, she and Umika led her to their house. While she was out, Kazumi met and fought the police detective from earlier, arriving just after the end of the battle.

The next day, she explains to Kazumi how Umika's writer's blocks work and how to handle her reactions, and later she and Umika showed their own powers to Kazumi. They fight against another pseudo-witch, which is briefly seen with a mysterious magical girl.

Umika saving Kaoru from being eaten

Later they fight a "real" Witch, but due to a mistake by Kazumi, Kaoru she is nearly devoured by the Witch. She is saved at the last second by Umika's barrier, but the witch ends up fleeing with both of them inside. Kazumi meets the remaining Pleiades, and they engage in a mad rush to save the two before Umika's barrier collapses. They arrive just in time to save them both.

Volume 2

While they celebrate their victory, they are attacked by the mysterious Magical Girl from earlier, Yuuri. She kidnaps Kazumi, and orders them to go to the Asunaro Dome if they want Kazumi back. They head there, but due to a force barrier, they can do nothing but watch as Kazumi is implanted with an Evil Nut.

However, Kazumi is able to free herself, and engages Yuuri. However, over the course of the battle, Yuuri becomes a Witch. Along with the other Pleiades, Kaoru is trapped on a cross in the Witch's barrier, and is enveloped in thorny vines.

Saki then shoots the Witch, freeing Kaoru and the other Saints. They then attack the Witch as they explain to Kazumi that they have no choice but to kill her. Kaoru is seen crying during this sequence. Finally Kazumi delivers the final blow, saying she wishes to share this burden with her friends. Later, Kaoru and Umika walk home with Kazumi. Kazumi then tells them to go on ahead, as she wishes to be alone.

Later, Kaoru is seen with Saki, Satomi and Mirai confronting a Magical Girl named Sumire Akane. Sumire recognizes Kaoru from soccer training (revealing her last name, Maki). Kaoru apologizes and uses a spell called Tocco del Male (English: Touch of the Sea), causing Sumire to scream. Kaoru is the shown untransformed, holding out her Soul Gem.

Kaoru appears along with the other Pleiades Saints to help Kazumi and Niko against Ayase and Luca Souju. Kaoru says they'll be taking the Soujus' gems. Saki tells Kaoru not to do it in front of Kazumi, but Niko says Kazumi already saw her doing it. Kaoru says that their gems are at their limit and pulls out both Ayase and Luca's gems with the spell Tocco del Male. Kazumi angrily asks the others why they're taking the Soul Gems of other Magical Girls, saying that she said earlier she would bear the burden with her friends. Against Saki's objections, Umika says she'll tell Kazumi the truth about the Pleiades Saints, but is interrupted by Niko's Soul Gem glowing. As she falls over, a Witch appears.

Volume 3

The Pleiades are shocked to discover Niko has become a Witch. Repeatedly shouting "Cut", the witch turns her hands into a single pair of scissors. Kaoru transforms and blocks the attack using Capitano Potenza ("Captain Power"), which encases her arms in a black metallic substance. The Witch fires projectiles from its body. Kaoru turns to the others and tells them to not just stand there. Umika encases herself, Kazumi, and Satomi in a barrier. Saki pushes Mirai in, but Mirai flips out and uses her attack La Bestia ("The Beasts"), causing an army of teddy-bears to appear and chew on the Witch. Mirai leaps into the air, turns her wand into a giant sword, and cuts both the bear and the witch in half.

Kazumi takes the hand of Niko's body and finds it's cold. As she shouts Niko's name, a voice says "You called?" Everyone is shocked to see another Niko standing behind them. Juubey, a disturbing grin on his face, says that the body was Niko's "spare" and "compensation for Niko's contract". Kaoru asks why Niko didn't tell them. Niko says that to deceive an enemy, you have to deceive your allies. Kaoru punches her, then gives her a hug. Niko then says they should cut to the chase. Kaoru tells Saki Kazumi can handle it.

The scene switches to Mirai's teddy bear museum, "Angelica Bears". As they walk inside, they step onto a magic circle. Umika holds out her ring, suddenly transporting them to the Freezer. Umika explains that Witches are the end state of Magical Girls. Juubey, grinning, explains that Soul Gems are the extracted souls of Magical Girls. Kaoru admits that they're like zombies, but it's preferable to dying to a Witch in one shot. Juubey then says that the Pleiades refuse to fight without feeling pain, Kaoru responds by saying that if they do that they'll cease being human. Kaoru says they hope to find a way to completely clean the gems and turn them back into humans, but until then, they'll keep fighting. This is their "rejection" of the Magical Girl system.

Kazumi says she remembers hunting Magical Girls after Yuuri, but then suddenly falls over. The symbol for the Evil Nuts appears in her eyes. Satomi looks on in shock, as Kaoru says everyone's tired. Umika leads Kazumi out as Kaoru says they should rest for the day.

Doppel Description

ANTONIO (Antonio)

The Doppel of hot-bloodedness.
Its form is a minotaur.
The master of this emotion bears a strong sense of responsibility, putting care of others before care for herself. Her Doppel sees defeating an opponent in battle as its own personal “goal”, and until it crosses that goal line, it’ll relentlessly charge forth like a fighting bull. It focuses purely and completely on its goal, without giving anything else a single glance. No matter how many blows it receives along the way, it’ll never show its back to its enemy, and the blood that gushes forth from its wounds boils hot like magma. Once it passes by, a scorching trail like the mark of a branding iron will surely be left in its wake.

Side Story

Kaoru Maki's Side Story

Kaoru, Umika Misaki and Kazumi were fighting a witch as usual but ended up chasing it as far as Kamihama City, where they got separated. Kaoru knows Umika can handle herself, but she's more worried about Kazumi who could be unstable due to waking up not long ago. Before she can come up with a plan on how to find the two, her soul gem reacts to the presence of a nearby witch. She finds the barrier and enters to find Natuski Utsuho fighting familiars inside. Kaoru teams up with Natsuki, who's grateful for the assistance, and they manage to defeat the witch together.

Back outside, the two girls introduce themselves and Natsuki thanks Kaoru for her help. Kaoru explains to Natsuki everything that's happened. The two girls decide to become friends and Natsuki helps her to navigate through the city in search of her friends. Natsuki cheers Kaoru on in her search and explains she's a cheerleader at school. Kaoru jokes about how soccer and cheerleading go well together when it dawns on Natsuki that Kaoru is the same soccer player that destroyed her school's team at the last tournament. Even if they lost, the team learned a lot from their game that day and grew to be better players. Natsuki cheers Kaoru on once more as they set off on their search.

As the two girls searched all over Kamihama, they talked about Natsuki's many school activities and Kaoru's soccer career. Natsuki also told Kaoru about how the number of witches had greatly increased in Kamihama recently. Kaoru wonders if perhaps the witch she had been chasing with her friends was actually running to Kamihama. Natsuki isn't sure, but says her friends have also noticed the number of witches going up to the point her friend in the cheer club was attacked by a witch.

Natsuki's friend had been witch-kissed and had tried to hurt herself. Thankfully Natsuki had found her in time and was able to stop her. Since then, she had intensified her hunt for witches. Unfortunately, she wasn't strong enough to fight them on her own which is why she had needed Kaoru's help earlier. She admired Kaoru's strength in that battle, but Kaoru insisted it was because they were working on a team, and it's better to fight as a team than go at it alone. She explains that even back home she fights with her friends beside her as a team and how sports are played in a team as well.

Suddenly their soul gems began to react to the presence of a witch. Natsuki offers to fight off the witch alone so Kaoru can continue to search for her friends, but Kaoru won't leave Natsuki by herself now that they're friends. Also, this could be the same witch that attacked them earlier. Natsuki apologizes to Kaoru and gives her a great cheer before they head off in the direction of the magic they sensed.

Soon the girls find the Witch's labyrinth and head inside, but this is a different witch than the one that attacked Kaoru and her friends earlier. Familiars soon begin to swarm them but the girls defeat the familiars easily. As they head deep into the barrier, the witch attacks Kaoru from above. Natsuki is somehow able to create a defensive barrier due to her desire to save Kaoru from harm and Kaoru takes advantage of the pause in the battle to defeat the witch.

As the two congratulate one another on their teamwork, Kaoru transforms back into a regular girl and hangs her head, sad that it wasn't the witch she was looking for. As she prepares to renew her search for her friends, she hears a voice and turns to find Umika there! It seems Umika had teamed up with other magical girls from Kamihama and had had the same idea of tracking a witch in order to find Kaoru. Now that the two friends were reunited, they could both search for their lost friend Kazumi together. Before they leave, Kaoru asks Natsuki for one more cheer of encouragement to get her all fired up.

The second version of Kaoru's side story as edited by Masaki Hiramatsu remains largely the same as the original with a few changes, most notably the speaking tone that Kaoru uses. The other notable differences are:

When Natsuki asks Kaoru about her wish:

  • Original Response: "Ah, that... / Well, it'd be no fun if I wished for that."
  • Revised Response: "Nah, never even considered it. / Working hard to better yourself is what's fun about sports, y'know?"

When Kaoru tells Natsuki about her strengths:

  • Original Response: "I believe that building a strong team is super important."
  • Revised Response: "I know how important it is to build a strong team... and how hard it can be."

When finding Umika:

  • Original Response:

Umika (offscreen): The trace is gone...
Kaoru: That voice!
Umika: Hm?
Umika: K-Kaoru!
Kaoru: Umikaaa!

  • Revised Response:

Umika (offscreen): Yes... I recognize that magic just now. I'm very familiar with it...
Kaoru: Huh...?! That voice!
Umika: .......
Kaoru: Ah, Umika!

Umika: Looks like I finally found you, Kaoru.

Trivia

  • Kaoru's last name was revealed in Chapter 7.
  • "Capitano Potenza" (Captain Power) is most likely a reference to the American TV show Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future.
  • In Magia Record:
    • Along with Kazumi, Kaoru is the first event-limited girl in Magia Record that must be obtained from the gacha when she is available.
    • Her Magia is based on two separate attacks Kaoru uses in the original Kazumi Magica manga:
      • Its use of kicking a ball comes from an attack of the same name.[4]
      • The summoning of many Kaoru clones comes from Umika casting Kyoko Sakura's Rosso Fantasma magic on Kaoru.[8]
        • In the manga, this was accomplished by Kaoru passing through Umika's magic seal (used in her own Magia). Here, it uses Kaoru's own magic seal.

Observations

  • Her Doppel's name, Antonio, may be a reference to San Antonio, Texas, a city in the United States of America famous for their rodeo and bull riding events.
    • Her Doppel somewhat resembles to Asiphae from The Different Story. Kyoko attempts to use Rosso Fantasma to defeat it, and discovers it has the same power. In the original Kazumi Magica manga, Umika uses her magic to temporarily grant Rosso Fantasma to Kaoru, and in Magia Record it is incorporated into her Magia attack.
    • Coincidentally, Yuuri can summon a bull (named Cole) with her magic.[3]

Etymology

  • Her first name, Kaoru (カオル), is written in hiragana which has no particular meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean "fragance" ().
  • Her last name, Maki (), means "pasture".
