Side Story

Summary

A Kyubey specimen that only exists within Kamihama City. It’s different from the other Kyubeys and looks very young. People used to see it wandering around the city. Now, it’s frequently seen with the residents of Mikazuki Villa. It’s unclear what goal it has and it’s very much a mystery.

Lil' Kyubey initially appears when Iroha is tracking it in Kamihama City. It isn't until after she is able to capture it that she suddenly recalls all memories of her missing sister Ui. Thereafter, the name of the creature is whatever the player inputs as their player name and serves as a proxy for the player. It often stands in when Iroha is thinking or talking to herself and will present her with two or three different dialogue options presented as some variation of "Mokyu" with the actual dialogue in parenthesis underneath. The dialogue choice often has no bearing on the story outside of branching events. Lil' Kyubey itself doesn't speak outside of saying "Mokyu" or minor variations on that, unlike the regular version of Kyubey.

Iroha also attempted to make Touka and Nemu remember her sister Ui by having them hug Lil' Kyubey, but they knocked it away before it could make contact.

In Chapter 10 it was revealed that Ui, Touka, and Nemu all contracted in order to save Iroha from the fate of turning into a witch. They each took Kyubey's ability to absorb, convert and create energy. As soon as the contract was made, Kyubey's hoops fell off and he regressed into Lil' Kyubey of the present day.

Powers and Abilities

Unlike standard Incubators or their variants, Lil' Kyubey lacks the typical suite of Incubator abilities such as telepathic communication, wish granting, Grief Seed consumption, replication, or access to Kyubey's database informations.

Its powers are specifically limited to teleportation and its unique properties as a container/conduit, often tied to its role in containing Ui's soul and facilitating the events surrounding the Embryo Eve.

Teleportation is explicitly stated as Lil' Kyubey's only remaining power and the way it does so varies significantly. It has been seen fading in from shadows, liquifying into the water of an Uwasa, and manifesting through a flash of energy.

Lil' Kyubey's unique, empty body possesses the intrinsic property of being a viable container for souls and abstract concepts. It housed Ui Tamaki's soul after Touka and Nemu transformed it and the container successfully prevented Ui's soul from dissipating, even when the transfer was completed by Nemu's Uwasa. However, this process had severe side effects as it erased all traces and memories of Ui for everyone except Ui herself. In the occasion where Nemu who performed the transplant, she was also able to remember as well, but in the case of the Uwasa-completed transfer, only Ui remembered her own existence. Direct contact with her sister allowed Lil' Kyubey to partially restore Iroha's memories of Ui.

Additionally, Nemu demonstrated the ability to trap Iroha's entire body within Lil' Kyubey without causing erasure, though Ui later freed her, damaging Lil' Kyubey in the process and causing it to take on a ghostly form and begin disintegrating.

Lil' Kyubey can also function as a replacement core or conduit for the Doppel Barrier, as it was involved in its creation. Specifically, it was able to replace Ui as the core of Embryo Eve. Furthermore, it later acts as a conduit enabling Iroha Tamaki, Ui Tamaki, and the Kimochi Stones to access this system and ultimately fuse together, transforming into Infinite Iroha.

Trivia

  • The first character to have the "Variable" attribute effect. This causes the target to change Lil' Kyubey's attack to the advantage attribute. Lil' Kyubey's attribute remains the same when defending, however.
  • It is the first genderless playable character.
  • It is also the first character without a set name on its card; instead, the card's name is the one the players gave themselves.
  • This character can only perform diagonal blasts and, until the later release of Lavi Himuro, likewise no other character can perform a diagonal blast. If a different character connects to or from Lil' Kyubey, the blast discs get converted.
    • ⭨ Blasts become ↕ blasts and vice versa.
    • ↙ Blasts become ↔ blasts and vice versa.
  • Its illustrator is Sasagi Koushi.
  • Some of the frames from its transformation scene are a reference to Lyrical Toy Box from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.
  • In the Anime's third season, after Iroha's meeting with Ui, Lil' Kyubey takes on a blue translucent appearance. In the DVD Blu-ray version of the Anime this design stays until the end.
