Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

It's the start of winter break in Mitakihara City. Madoka, Sayaka Miki and Homura Akemi leave from their school's closing ceremony. Sayaka's happy it's over, and Madoka's excited. Homura thinks she'll be lonely since she won't be able to see the others. Sayaka says Homura says cute things and ruffles her hair. She then points out they can still see each other even when it's winter break, whether through hunting witches or hanging out. Madoka says Sayaka is right and that she wants to have fun with everyone.

Madoka suggests they go to Mizuna Shrine in Kamihama City for New Years. Madoka says that the shrine is giving out "Ultimate Fortunes". Sayaka says she's interested, but made other plans for New Year's. Homura says she can go. Sayaka tells the two to have fun on New Year's. Sayaka then leaves to look at a store that sells rare classical CDs, and wishes the girls a happy new year. Madoka then asks Homura if she has formal clothes. When Homura says she does, she asks Homura if she knows how to put them on properly. Homura says she doesn't.

Madoka says that she was in the shopping district a little while ago. She found a store selling formal clothes, which gave her the idea of dressing up with Homura and Sayaka on New Year's. She then saw a flyer, advertising a kimono dressing class. She tells Homura that the class takes place at a neighbor's house and invites her to attend. Homura is silent for a moment, but agrees. Madoka says she's happy because she didn't have the courage to go alone. Homura says she might not be able to do it well, but Madoka says it's her first time too.

At the class, the instructor dresses them in the outfits. Madoka thinks she almost looks like a different person, while she thinks Homura looks beautiful. Homura blushingly admits Madoka is cute. The girls say they're looking forward to New Year's. The girls then begin their lesson, but Madoka turns out to be bad at it, to the point where she trips over the clothes when putting in on. On the other hand, Homura is able to learn how to put the clothing on by herself. The instructor tells Homura she shouldn't have any problems. Madoka thinks she'll never learn herself.

The instructor tells Madoka to take a break, and get some fresh air. Homura tries to go with Madoka, but the instructor keeps her to do one last review. Outside, Madoka mopes about how useless she feels. Suddenly Sayaka appears. She tells Madoka she was on her way to pick up a CD and asks what happened. After Madoka explains, Sayaka asks why Madoka thought she wanted to wear formal clothing in the first place.

Sayaka asks Madoka why she wanted to take the dressing class. Madoka says it's because she thought it would be fun to celebrate New Year's in formal wear. Sayaka points out Madoka is gloomy, and Madoka says it's because she's failing at the class. Sayaka asks if Madoka has forgotten her goal, and asks why she wanted to celebrate New Year's in the first place. Madoka says it's because she wanted to have fun. Sayaka says it's then fine even if Madoka messes up, because she'll still have her memories. She tells Madoka not to think about it too hard. Madoka agrees, and says she'll give it another try.

Suddenly Homura arrives, still wearing her formal wear. She says she got worried when Madoka was late. Sayaka compliments Homura on her clothes, and says Madoka's gloomy face must have worried her. She then bids the girls good-bye. Madoka thanks Sayaka, and Sayaka says they'll be even if Madoka sends her New Year's photographs. After Sayaka leaves, Madoka says that she wanted to have fun with Homura at New Year's but because she got all gloomy it wasn't fun for either of them. Madoka says she'll try harder for the sake of making fun memories, which Homura agrees with.

Back in the class, Madoka trips on her clothes again. Thinking about Sayaka, she tries again and eventually succeeds. However, the instructor points out that they've only had one day of practice, and during New Year's they'll be moving around and doing things. The instructor says that they won't know whether they're wearing the clothing out of shape. Both Madoka and Homura admit that would be embarrassing. Later, on New Year's Day, Madoka gets her formal wear put on for her at a store.

Homura then runs up to Madoka, revealing that she had her clothing put on at a store too. She says the class was interesting but wasn't very useful. Madoka agrees and says all they have are the memories. She says she has to thank Sayaka properly, and so they'll have to take lots of pictures to show to her later. Madoka and Homura wish each other a happy New Year, and go to pull fortunes at Mizuna Shrine. Madoka narrates that she'll be happy if everyone has a lucky new year.
