Etymology

Toyo can be spelled two ways, 臺與 or 台与.

  • 臺與 is in kanji. 臺 means "tower", and 與 means "give".
  • 台与 is written in hiragana. Its characters mean "platform" (台) and "giving" (与).

Iyo can be spelled in two ways, as well. Those spellings are 壹與 or 壱与.

  • 壹與 is written in kanji. 壹 means "one" and 與 means "give".
  • 壱与 is written in hiragana. Its characters mean "one" (壱) and "giving" (与).

Trivia

  • She is the only Puella Historia character so far to be based on a real person.
  • Her name may alternatively be Iyo, as both Toyo and Iyo are used when referring to Queen Toyo.
  • She is the tenth playable character to lack a family name. The others being Lil' Kyubey, Kuroe, Chizuru, Kuro (黒), Kuro (くろ), Ebony, Olga, Gunhild and Heruka.
    • Interestingly. there are little to no reliable records that give a family name for Toyo.
  • She was thirteen when she rose to power.
  • Queen Himiko, the queen who Toyo is the successor to, was also seen in Episode 12 of the main anime with a palace burning around her. It is implied Ultimate Madoka saved her.
    • This contradicts historical records, however. She died at 78 years old in real life. This would make Himiko one of the oldest magical girls to be known in canon.
  • In her introduction at the end of The Rakshasi of Tibet, she says "I am Himiko-samas... what!?"
