― Various volume covers
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (魔法少女まどか☆マギカ Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika, lit. Magical Girl Madoka Magica), also known as MadoMagi (まどマギ) for short, is the first title in the Puella Magi series, a production of animation studio SHAFT and Aniplex[1] under Atsuhiro Iwakami as a main producer[1]. The series was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo[1] and written by Gen Urobuchi[1], with original character designs by Ume Aoki[1]. Madoka Magica began development after Akiyuki Shinbo expressed his desire to work on a new magical girl series after Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha[2] to producer Atsuhiro Iwakami while they were working on Hidamari Sketch and Bakemonogatari.
The show, a total of 12 episodes, broadcasted on MBS[3], TBS[4] and CBC[5] between January 7, 2011[6] and April 21, 2011[7] with a delay after Episode 10, due to production and broadcast delays related to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami[8]. All Blu-rays and DVDs released were delayed by one month sequentially from its original plans[9]
Besides the anime, many other Madoka Magica products have been released, including several manga spin-offs, a movie adaptation, and more.
Plot
There exist "messengers of magic" who have the power to grant one wish to a chosen girl. However, that girl must then become a magical girl and fight against witches, evil creatures born from curses that are responsible for murders and suicides. A schoolgirl named Madoka Kaname and her friend Sayaka Miki are approached by one of these messengers of magic named Kyubey and a magical girl named Mami Tomoe with an offering to become a magical girl. But as this is all happening, Homura Akemi, another magical girl, tries to prevent Madoka and friends from making such a deal...
Having a loving family and best friends, sometimes laughing, sometimes crying - such is an ordinary everyday life. Madoka Kaname, an ordinary second-year middle school student at Mitakihara Middle School, is one of the people living that ordinary life. One day, she has a mysterious encounter. She still doesn't know if this meeting is a coincidence or fate. It was an encounter that would change her fate forever - it was the beginning of the tale of a new Magical Girl tale.[10]
