"Ui, Touka, Nemu, Kuroe, no matter how much I regret, or how sad I am, I won't give up. I'll keep going! I know I'm not alone anymore, and if I stumble I know you'll be there to reach out to.
Now, let me hear your voices again!"

No One Knows Our Record is the fourth episode of Magia Record Anime Season 3 and the twenty-fifth episode overall. It serves as the Anime's finale.

Summary

Iroha is still shocked by Kuroe becoming a witch infront of her, she blames herself for driving Kuroe into this state. Kyubey appears and confirms her thoughts, telling her that Kuroe fell into despair because of her. Kyubey tries to explain that it's not a bad thing and that it helps expand the life of the universe, but Iroha shoots him and questions the purpose of having powers if she can't save anyone. The platform made out of Ichizo's mud cracks and Iroha falls back into the Automatic Purification System, which prompts her doppel, Giovanna, to appear and start taunting her. Giovanna blames Iroha for how many more Magical Girls will become Witches in the future because of she's trying to stop the Magius' plans. Iroha believes and succumbs to her words, while Giovanna creates a dome around her.

Yachiyo, Tsuruno, Sana, and Felicia all come running to the dome on Yachiyo's halberds. They encourage Iroha to keep persisting and free her by Connecting. The Mikazuki Villa team, all together again, hold their hands and talk about their insecurities, sharing their hope and despair. They Connect again to create a giant rocket made out of their weapons, flying towards the Magius. Iroha thanks her friends for coming to her rescue and Tsuruno reasures her that she's the reason they got this far. Yachiyo explains how the Magius want to fuse Embryo Eve with Walpurgisnacht, which would create a massive shockwave and destroy Kamihama City. Giovanna comes back to taunt Iroha, trying to prove to her that she's gonna fail again. Iroha, more confident now, refuses to give up, knowing that her friends will always have her back. Iroha apologizes to Kuroe in her head.

Touka and Nemu chase Walpurgisnacht on Embryo Eve, while Magical Girls from Kamihama try to damage them with energy blasts. They see Walpurgisnacht's storm in the distance and land on the ground, destroying a few buildings on their way, but before they can get back up the Mikazuki Villa team attacks them, albeit without Iroha. The rocket turns into ribbons and it binds Eve. Kaede and Rena, transformed into Kaede, Connect, creating large trees that tie Embryo Eve to a giant building. Kaede asks Rena if Momoko would be proud of them. Rena encourages her as they both cry. The Kamihama city girls and multiple Feathers led by Mitama catch up to the fight, chaining and further damaging Eve. Nemu summons the Uwasa of the Saint of Kamihama to try and combat the energy blasts. After Eve gets severly damaged Touka and Nemu jump off to a safer platform, they try to explain that their solution is the best for the salvation of Magical Girls, before Iroha grabs them and lands on Eve. Iroha tries to convince them that this plan won't save anyone and Mitama orders the Magical Girls to stop attacking. Touka and Nemu claim that such method would only harm people that Iroha doesn't know and that they would take the blame for all the deaths. Iroha wants Touka and Nemu to cherish every second of being together, instead of giving themselves up to a cause that will harm innocent people. Iroha blames herself for how things have gone but Touka start yelling at her, exclaiming that her staying alive is their main goal, and everything they do is for her sake. Eve starts crying blood as Iroha tells them how much she couldn't bear loding them again. Touka and Nemu start crying too as Eve's tears turn into light, they apologize to Iroha as she comforts them and promises to never leave them again.

Suddenly, Alina attacks the Magical Girls and reveals herself with her Doppel. Alina greets and tells Nemu and Touka that their plan wasn't dumb, it just needed her "touch". Touka tries to tell her that the plan has changed but Alina ignores her words and reveals her plan - as revenge for humanity's reliance on Magical Girls' suffering, and to make their existence known, she will fuse her Doppel with Eve and consume Walpurgisnacht to spread her Doppel's toxic paint and turn every ordinary human "Magical", with the intention of letting them all become Witches. Touka and Nemu argue that this isn't saving Magical Girls like their original plan, but only spreading their suffering, and Alina claims that this will show humanity their anger in a better way and make the "show" more exciting than their salvation. Alina attacks Embryo Eve, forcing Iroha Touka and Nemu to jump off as she fuses herself and her Doppel with Eve, becoming Neo Dorothy Motherfucker. Alina Eve immediately takes chase after Walpurgisnacht, when this happens Touka and Nemu agree to resume their plan, they combine their powers to unleash their Doppels and trap Iroha in a barrier. Iroha desperately tries to stop them but she's defenseless in the barrier, they talk to Iroha about not regretting their wishes and fly off. They fly towards Alina Eve, planning to sacrifice themselves and attack Alina with all of their power as compensation for all of their sins. Lil' Kyubey appears on Nemu's shoulder, joining her best friends as they attack Alina Eve and give up their life. Their attack creates a massive shockwave.

Yachiyo wakes up from the shockwave in a train, traveling in space. She questions if she died when Kanae and Mel appear sitting infront of her. Kanae tells her that instead of ghosts, they are their magic, carried on by her. Yachiyo assumes that this means she stole their magic and calls herself disgusting. Kanae explains that her magic is to carry on their hope, Mifuyu and Momoko appear, joining in to further explain. Yachiyo, not knowing that they have died, questions their words and she asks Mifuyu if she wants to move in with her after leaving the Wings of the Magius. Mifuyu happily accepts and says she'll take the living room, Momoko joins in saying she wants the living room too. Yachiyo doesn't understand why they chose the living room when they have many available rooms, Kanae says she'll take the living room too, while Mel stays quiet. Yachiyo stays confused as the train whistles, the girls get up and get ready to leave. Momoko apologizes and Mifuyu says her last goodbye, in that moment Yachiyo realizes their fate as she reaches out a hand before they're taken away.

Iroha wakes up in a black grassy space with a pillar. Standing infront of the pillar is Ui, Iroha runs up to her and hugs her, asking if there's a way for her to stay. Ui tells her that she wishes she could, before she starts explaining the nature of her existence. ui explains that her body is made of magic, and her existence is scattered like particles. She tells Iroha that she will always be with her, as long as she looks for her in her happiness. Iroha accepts her words and Ui vanishes, turning back into magic.

Yachiyo truly wakes back up infront of a partially destroyed Alina Eve, she is joined by Felicia, Sana and Tsuruno. Alina Eve starts regenerating her body. WHen Iroha wakes up, she has already summoned her doppel, Giovanna asks her if she's okay with knowing so much, telling her that she would have been better off oblivious. Iroha refuses to give up, accepting Giovanna as part of her and declaring that she's glad she became a Magical Girl. With those words Giovanna's body turns into pink glowing ribbons that distribute themselves to every Magical Girl in Kamihama, the ribbons start collecting their impurities as Iroha acknowledges this power to be Ui's power of collection. Yachiyo looks down at her Halberd and notices 4 ribbon bows, representing the magic she's carrying on and confirming her powers. Iroha takes out Kuroe's Grief Seed and combines it with both her Doppel and the collected impurities into a giant weapon, Yachiyo joins her and combines her Halberd with it. Iroha speaks to Ui, Kuroe, Touka and Nemu as she gets ready to fire the Halberd at Alina Eve, while this happens Alina Eve sees Walpurgisnacht being killed by Madoka's attack. Iroha asks to hear their voices again as she shoots the giant halberd into Alina Eve, effectively destroying her and saving Kamihama. After her desctruction the sky clears up and the Mikazuki team reunites.

After the destruction, the authorities recognized it as several earthquakes, as well as terrorist attacks, though some people in Kamihama do recall being saved by girls, not knowing they're Magical Girls. The Magical Girls in Kamihama have taken to supporting each other, as well as ones from other places, by starting a support group for each other, called Kamihama Magia Union. Many of the black feathers and girls of Kamihama hold funerals for their deceased friends. Rena and Kaede take on helping Mitama at her Coordinator's business to help other Magical Girls. Many girls also seek solace in Mikazuki Villa, helped by Yachiyo who has now cut her hair. Karin receives Alina's last artwork, and everyone's memories of Ui have been restored, alongside all proof of her existence. Kyubey congratulates Iroha on the fact that nobody will know the existence of Magical Girls, but Iroha explains that they themselves know what happened, and that they will not forget it. Iroha gives the book of Magia Record, which is this universe, to Ultimate Madoka.

No one knows, our record.

Observations

  • Alina is seen flying on her Doppel with Stacey's fūrin flying around her. While this isn't explained, it can be assumed that she dismembered a Stacey Witch to use her body parts in order to fly.
  • Iroha embracing Alina's head when she defeats her is similar to Sayaka Miki embracing Hitomi Shizuki's Nightmare in Rebellion, and Madoka Kaname reaching out her hands and speaking kindly to Walpurgisnacht in the original series' finale. This is a display of the purpose and goal of Magical Girls, to show kindness, compassion, and sympathy to all, even their enemies.
  • Walpurgisnacht is confirmed to be defeated in this timeline with the news headline "Supercell disappears above Mitakihara". The DVD blu-ray version of the episode shows Madoka's magic seal appearing behind Walpurgisnacht and shooting arrows at her, meaning that Madoka finished her off.
    • Since Homura is shown going back in time, Madoka most likely died because of the attack using up all of her magic, leading to an ending like the one in timeline 3 in episode 10 of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Changes

  • The Anime's ending is far more tragic than the ending of the game's first Arc ending. Touka, Nemu and Alina die, with the Doppel system being destroyed, no longer protecting the Magical Girls of Kamihama from becoming Witches. Ui is not saved, but as a small victory, her memory and traces of her existence are restored to the world.

Trivia

  • According to Gekidan Inu Curry's tweet, the part after the ending is a homage to Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets by Shūji Terayama.
  • Alina's decision to fuse with Embryo Eve to make all of humanity into Magical Girls (which fails, and is part of a timeline whose story is ultimately forgotten), as well as her declaration that "The Story that is Alina Gray will burst and burn out, just for this moment!" may be a reference to Oscar Wilde's story The Remarkable Rocket. In it, an arrogant firework is discarded when it gets wet and is eventually taken by a pair of boys who mistake it for kindling for their fire. When it dries off and ignites, its explosion goes entirely unnoticed except for startling a passing goose. Even as it fizzles out, it still believes it has made a spectacle.
    • Similarly to the firework, Alina attempts suicide after making her wish, feeling that she is an artistic failure. She survives, and is ultimately recruited as the third Magius leader by Touka and Nemu.

Discussion

Objective facts

  • The conversation between Iroha and Ui explains why Lil' Kyubey was able to appear and disappear wherever there were Uwasa.
    • It also explains the difference between Ui's and Ultimate Madoka's existences: Ui exists within the physical universe, but only in the form of magic or emotion (or like scattered particles). Ultimate Madoka does not exist physically, but only in the abstract form of hope.

Subjective opinion

  • There are two interpretions of "record". One of the record is that no one knows the existence of magical girl (which is the normal interpretion). Also, after being witches, the soul and the body (most likely) disappear - no one knows the record of the magical girls at some time.
