A Magical Girl with a strong sense of justice. As a kid, Sasara was obsessed with a knight in a picture book and swore to become someone who could save people too. Taking after her Rescue Squad father, she'd rather save a life than kill an enemy.

Doppel Description

Don Rocinante, Sasara's doppel

The Doppel of honorable pride. Its form is a gorget. The master of this emotion is greatly pleased by her Doppel, believing it to be valiant and perfectly suited to her, but its gleaming silver body becomes frigid in winter and blazing hot in summer. The Doppel is just as proud as its master, standing tall and forthright in the face of any challenge. But because it holds all-but-pointless confidence in its strong, stalwart body, it often soldiers directly into the path of any attack that it may receive, and naturally suffers as a result. Its body also blesses its master as an impenetrable suit of armor, but since its master is equally prideful and often dashes forward to strike the finishing blow, the two of them can end up in a mutual struggle for control over it.

Side Story

Warning, this section contains spoilers.

The story begins with Sasara's father apologizing to her. He says that this is his job, and if no-one does it people will be sad. The story cuts to Sasara within a witch's barrier. Kyubey tells her that a kidnapped girl is in the back. Sasara asks if the monsters she's fighting are witches, but Kyubey explains they are familiars. Sasara says they're preventing her from saving a life and fights through them. Suddenly she sees the unconscious girl. Kyubey explains she's been witch kissed and the only way to free her is to defeat the witch. More familiars arrive, and Sasara defeats them all. Afterward, Kyubey asks Sasara if she's ready to fight the witch. Sasara insists she'll beat it, but first she needs to get the victim somewhere safe.

In narration Sasara explains she met Kyubey a week ago. At first she was kind of afraid, but then she got over it. Kyubey told her about witches, which make people fall into despair. He told Sasara she could save them if she became a magical girl. Sasara narrates that she couldn't avoid reacting to the word "save". Sasara wondered if she could save people like her father does. Sasara explains that her father is part of an emergency service team; a "Rescue Squad". She thinks her father's job is really cool. Her father also gave Sasara her favorite picture book: A story about a knight who defeats a dragon to save a village. Sasara still carries the book around everywhere. Sasara wanted to be like her father and the knight in her story and save people.

However, two days before she met Kyubey, Sasara was in a convenience store when a criminal came at her with a knife and took her hostage. Despite her desire to become a knight, Sasara was too terrified to do anything. She was ashamed and hated herself. The police arrested the criminal and Sasara was safe, but she still felt horrible. Thus when Kyubey made his offer Sasara accepted. She told him she wanted to become a knight, so she could protect and save people. She also wanted a stronger heart and stronger convictions. She asked if magical girls save people from witches. Kyubey told her it's just like what a knight would do. Sasara wishes to have the strength to become a knight. Kyubey told her a witch would be arriving soon, and Sasara says she'll take it down.

In the present, Sasara defeats the witch and rejoices. Kyubey praises her and says he was surprised she beat a witch so soon. Sasara narrates that she's living her fantasies and since that day she hunts witches and saves their victims. Sasara notes that there have been many incidents in Kamihama City lately and she senses witches everywhere, but she still fights on. During one incident, Kyubey tells her that fighting too many familiars on her own is dangerous, but Sasara says if she doesn't, then no-one else will. She calls herself the Knight that protects the people of Kamihama. Sasara narrates that even though she fights so many witches they keep coming. At some point, her feelings became tainted. Sasara wonders why she feels so empty when she became the person she wanted to be.

Sasara narrates that those cursed by a witch's kiss became unconcious and don't usually remember what happened. This means no-one will ever know she's helping people. Sasara tries to talk to the people she rescues, but none of them respond. Sasara wonders what she wants them to say, and think she just wants someone to appreciate her. Sasara wonders if she really wanted to become a knight. Suddenly Sasara wakes up from a nap. Kyubey asks her if she's tired of fighting. Sasara says she's fine, but think she's losing her way.

Sasara thinks she has to keep fighting, because otherwise she didn't have a reason to make a contract. One day, while in a barrier, Sasara tells Kyubey her father's job had to be different than this. Sasara says that maybe she just wanted people to praise and approve of her, just like how the knight in the picture book was thanked by the villagers. Sasara thought she could get over the people she helped not talking to her, but it's like she doesn't even exist. Kyubey says that she seems lost on the inside. Sasara asks if people are supposed to feel good when helping others. Kyubey says that is how the strong are made to help the weak, an instinct that ensures the collective survival of the species. Sasara asks if she was born with that instinct, but Kyubey admits he can never understand emotions.

Sasara asks if she was born like this, then why does she want to be recognized. She wonders if she's just a defective human. Suddenly a familiar attacks from above and Sasara moves to shield an unconscious victim. Sasara thinks it was her fault, because her heart was weak. She begs to at least let her save the victim. Suddenly Sasara is rescued by another magical girl. Kyubey introduces her as Asuka Tatsuki. Asuka says Sasara doesn't have to thank her, as she was hunting down a witch and saw Sasara by coincidence. She then abruptly leaves. Kyubey says that Asuka is always completely focused on her goal.

The victim's witch kiss disappeared after Sasara brought her out of the labyrinth. Kyubey says Asuka has defeated the witch. Sasara narrates that Kyubey told her a ridiculous story about Asuka. As Asuka was the first magical girl Sasara met, she wanted to meet with her again. The opportunity came when they met in another witch's barrier. Sasara tells Asuka she wanted to thank her. When Asuka says she doesn't need thanks, Sasara says she wanted to do it. Asuka gives an awkward you're welcome. The girls decide to hunt the witch together, but then they come across a room full of the witch's victims.

Asuka suggests they go find the witch, since they'll be saved if the witch is beaten. Sasara says something could happen to them. Asuka says they can come back if something happens, but the witch is the highest priority. Sasara says if they have to come back it will be too late. The girls begin to argue, but Kyubey says Asuka is right. Asuka says she will go deeper into barrier to confront the witch. Sasara says she has to help the victims. Asuka leaves, though Kyubey has to tell her the witch is not the way she's going. Kyubey tells Sasara Asuka has always been awkward like that. Sasara knows that everything is solved if the witch is beaten, but she can't leave the victims behind. Sasara thinks it's because she's a knight, she wants to save people, and she wants someone to thank her. Sasara wonders if she really is saving people to feel appreciated.

Sasara meets Asuka again on another day. They're attacked by familiars while innocent victims are trapped in the barrier. Sasara says they have to fight and protect the people at the same time. Asuka says that's what they have to do, insisting she's not heartless. Asuka admits she can't fight well defending someone, and Kyubey agrees that trying to fight while protecting other isn't safe. Asuka suddenly realizes the answer is simple. She asks Sasara to protect the victims while she fights the familiars - a division of roles. It proves to be a success. Sasara notes that Asuka is a natural at combat. Meanwhile, Sasara could focus on protecting the victims. All the feelings that pained her heart were gone.

After the witch is defeated, Kyubey says they made a pretty good team. Sasara thinks she moved differently than she used to, and the only things on her mind were "Protect" and "Help". Asuka tells Sasara that she made it looks easy. Sasara insists it was all Asuka. Asuka says she's come up with a great idea: Sasara won't be a magical girl anymore. Even Kyubey asks how this is possible. Asuka says she didn't say it right and asks to rephrase. Kyubey says it was a interesting notion, though Sasara calls it a shocking one. Asuka says what she really meant is that Sasara stops doing what magical girls usually do. Instead, she'll be a rescue and defense expert working with Asuka.

Asuka admits that she was a bit worried about her role division idea, but it turned out to be a successful strategy. She says she's in training to become the master of the Ryuushinbyu Naginata technique, and she's great at finding hidden talents. Kyubey says she's also great at being clumsy. Asuka tells him to shut up. She then tells Sasara she knows when she can trust someone to watch her back, and she knows when someone will be there when she needs them. She declares they will be a magical girl rescue squad, prompting Sasara to laugh. Asuka asks if she said something weird, but Sasara says it's a great idea.

Sasara narrates that they'll be first responders, with Sasara as the rescue and defense expert. Asuka wanted Sasara to become the kind of magical girl that Sasara always hoped for. Sasara says that was very convenient for this story, but she's fine because it's a story she's read many times. Sasara asks Asuka if she ever feels lonely as a magical girl. She tells Asuka that she's been fighting witches on her own, and the people she saves don't notice her. Sasara thinks she never imagined she could say something so embarrassing, but for some reason she feels she can say it freely.

Asuka says that she also feels lonely, but when she became a magical girl she promised to defeat the witches of the world and protect everyone's life. She just remembers the promise and fights. Sasara says that sounds like something Asuka would do. She thinks that Asuka is always straightforward and doesn't think about anything else. Sasara realizes she forgot something important: The knight in her picture book also helped people without thinking, just like Sasara's dad.

Sasara says that she just won't think anymore. Asuka tells her to forget she says anything, but Sasara says it feels really good. Sasara narrates that for now she'll be Asuka's partner. She hasn't met other magical girls yet, but she'll always be there to answer their distress calls as part of the rescue squad. Sasara narrates her and Asuka really do make a good team.

Sasara and Asuka have defeated another Witch successfully. As the barrier dissipates and the two of them nullify their transformations, they congratulate each other on a job well done. Suddenly Sasara realizes how late it has gotten. She had wanted to go buy some new clothes and get everything ready for the plans she has tomorrow. Asuka says she can leave it to her but Sasara asks her if she even knows anything about fashion. Asuka calls her rude, although she admits it’s hard to convince her when all she ever sees her wear is her school uniform. Asuka promises to wow Sasara with her days of research.

The two head over to a fashion shop where Asuka diligently goes over every article of clothing in the shop. Sasara warns her the store is going to be closing soon but Asuka still hasn’t chosen between either pants or a skirt. Sasara can’t believe Asuka hasn’t even settled on that match and decides to just get the coat that she saw. This gives Asuka the inspiration she needed and she decides to put together an outfit centered around the coat that Sasara chose based on her budget. Sasara says ok so Asuka chooses a skirt to go with the slim coat to accentuate Sasara’s figure, then goes to find a good shirt to go with it. Sasara is impressed by Asuka’s knowledge as Asuka finishes coordinating an outfit.

Back home Sasara’s dad greets her as she walks through the door. Sasara explains she had gone shopping with a friend and asks her dad to wait while she tries the clothes on and models it for him. Her dad is really blown away by Sasara’s new look and asks if that’s what she’ll be wearing for their big plans tomorrow. Sasara sheepishly admits it is as her dad talks about how much he looks forward to spending the day with his daughter. Sasara also is looking forward to tomorrow.

Powers and Abilities

Sasara has the ability of drawing attacks towards herself as a form of purposefully agitating her enemies, this is useful for redirecting attacks towards injured or troubled allies to keep them out of harm's way however she risks becoming overwhelmed if she uses this power too much. As a result, she takes more of a defensive position in combat than a offensive one as her capabilities to protect people are often better than what she could do whilst attacking.

Sasara has been shown to be rather talented with her rapier sword, being able to fence with it quite well. It turns out she can also summon magical copies of this rapier and send them towards her enemies to impale them, though this seems to be an ability of many magical girls as they are able to duplicate their weapons numerous times within the limits of their own magic.

Etymology

  • The characters of her last name mean "beauty" (美) and "calm" (凪) respectively.

  • Her illustrator is Kei Toru.
  • Her Doppel's name is a combination of the fictional false knight Don Quixote and his horse Rocinante.
    • Don Quixote is the alias adopted by Alonso Quijano after he falls into or faking madness caused by reading stories of valiant and chivalrous knights. His attempts at reenacting the quests and heroics of knights cause great trouble for himself and those around him. Ultimately, he falls into a deadly illness and recovers his sanity shortly before his death, renouncing his previous ways.
    • Rocinante is Alonso's would-be steed, an old and awkward horse past his prime. His name is a complex pun:
      • Rocín means "work horse" or "low-quality" horse.
      • In Spanish, ante has several meanings and can function both as a standalone word and a suffix. One meaning is "before" or "previously", and another is "in front of"; as a suffix, -ante is adverbial, so "rocinante" refers to functioning as, or being, a rocín. Rocinante's name, then, signifies his change in status from the "old nag" of before to the "foremost" steed.
  • The Papa New Year's Memoria refers to a "yakuman". This is a particularly high-value hand in mahjong that is extremely difficult to achieve, akin to a royal flush.
