  1. There's a contradiction with Shizuka's age. In the Magia Day of 2022 she was stated to be a year younger than Sunao, thus meaning she is the same age as Chiharu who's also a year younger than Sunao. This, however, was corrected in the Magia Archive vol 3, where Shizuka is confirmed to be a year older than Sunao, not a year younger.

Those who receive its teachings will suffer hideous injuries, but due to this Doppel’s brilliant gold shine and the artistic nature of the violence it inflicts, its victims become so fascinated as to forget the pain entirely, and are said to become its captives before they even know it.

Side Story

Shizuka Tokime's Side Story

The following is a summary by muzass96.

The Tokime trio is going shopping while also visiting Emiri's office to hang out. There they bump into Hinano and Kanoko. After some awkward introductions to Kanoko by Emiri, Shizuka stumbles as she has no idea what a factory is. Kanoko thoroughly explains. Emiri wonders (while not being very polite about it) what it's like living in a countryside. Their responses about this differ, because Chiharu was originally from the city and Sunao is from a different village and more educated about modern life compared to Shizuka. They also mention that they first met not so long ago. Emiri is again surprised how did they bond so quickly, to which Shizuka proudly answers that they are bound by their desire to protect the country and explains the whole shtick behind the Tokime purpose and thinks that people from outside may not understand that. The girls are surprisingly alright with her choices, and Emiri says "As long as you have no regrets, it's okay!"

This causes Shizuka to again stumble because she never even thought about it. She was just eager to become a protector of Japan. She didn't even understand what she was asked to wish for, which was break up some economic agreement. But it didn't matter to her, because she was told it was for the good of Japan. After some thought, she decided to look it up, with the help of everyone, including Ryoko and Chika. Although the initial search gave no results, it was later decided to look for some info in the village, also to no avail. Until Shizuka and Chiharu were finally able to talk to their mothers. Chiharu's mom mentions that there was talk about that economic break up on the news, but she doesn't remember much. But if anything did came off that, it was the industrial status quo in the country. But Shizuka is still not convinced that her wish actually was good, so the next day she announces to her team and their mothers that she wants to look at the files from the elder's computer. Shizuka's mom wasn't able to erase them and asked Chiraru's mom to save them on hers.

After some objections from Sunao, the recording was played and it turns out her wish was bought by someone who wanted to save the factories, otherwise he would have been out of work if the agreement stood. But this actually devastated Shizuka because her wish was used by someone. But she immediately put on a brave face, saying that everything is fine and convincing herself that her wish doesn't matter as long as she is a good head of the tribe. And to stay true to this, she intensively started to drill and train her Magical Girl tribe members. But her fellow Tokime actually decided to keep looking for clues, because it hurts them to see her like this. Sunao and Chiharu remember Kanoko talking them about her family's metal factory and decide to go to Emiri to find out how to contact her to see if she knows something.

After explaining the situation to Hinano and Emiri, the latter again has her burst of random brilliant ideas and tells them instead of looking for those who suffered from this, to look for people who were saved. Chiharu remembers her mom's words about industrial status quo and Hinano elaborates that due to the agreement breaking off, many local manufacturers were saved by staying in work, thus Japanese economy didn't go down. And because essentially nothing changed for the country, there were little to no news about it, which is why Sunao and Chiharu couldn't find anything. Chiharu and Sunao arrange a meeting with Kanoko at the factory and dragged Shizuka there, where Kanoko's father tells her that if that agreement came through, his factory would have been dead because goods from overseas would have actually come cheaper and his production would have been defeated by it. Unlike now, when his factory is actually selling goods to a big company, as Kanoko mentioned during the first meeting.

Shizuka, moved by this, decides to accept the fact that she was used, but to feel pride about what her wish brought. Overflowing with resolve, she decides to go shopping alone, while her fellow Tokime are at school.

Costume Stories

Shizuka Tokime's Costume Stories

This page or section is a stub, and needs expansion. You can help Puella Magi Wiki by expanding it.

At the story's start, Shizuka has just discovered swimsuits, and is shocked that people would wear such revealing clothes. At Chiharu's questioning, Shizuka reveals that the traditional Tokime swimming garment is quite conservative, much like a diver's suit. Chiharu and Sunao propose that Shizuka takes this an opporunity to buy her own swimsuit, explaining to her that these outfits are completely normal to wear at the beach or swimming pool. While she's still a bit intimidated, she eventually goes along with it.

In the store, Shizuka comes out of the dressing room in her new outfit; Sunao and Chiharu love it, but Shizuka remains hesitant about the idea of wearing it in public. At this, Sunao proposes that Shizuka shows it to the others in the tribe so she can get used to wearing clothes like this. Shizuka then asks Chiharu and Sunao if they ever feel self-conscious in their swimsuits - Sunao admits she does, but Chiharu reassures Shizuka that everyone else will be dressed the same way. Shizuka finally agrees to buy it, saying she wants to visit the beach and pool someday, too.

The girls return to Suitoku Temple and get dressed in their swimsuits to show them off to their tribemates (Sunao and Chiharu joining Shizuka to provide soul support for her). Ryouko immediately asks why they're dressed up in swimsuits in a temple, and the girls explain the situation, saying they're doing this to help Shizuka get used to being seen by people in this outfit. Ryouko says the swimsuit itself looks good - it's just deeply inappropriate to wear in such sacred ground! Asahi and Chika concur, saying Shizuka looks adorable and should have confidence in herself.

Finally, Chika takes a photo of Shizuka in her swimsuit, and Shizuka sends it to her mom. To her delight, her mom loves the swimsuit, too! ...But her mom also says she mustn't wear it at the temple. Chiharu smiles, saying they'll take a photo from the beach or pool next time.

Shizuka and Sunao find Chiharu deeply concentrated in the storybook that Sana created for them. Shizuka acknowledges that the story is important, but it hurts to remember. The three read about the bird’s plans on leaving town until the spring, while the tiger and turtle make up for their past. Shizuka then begins to imagine how the story continues from the tiger’s perspective.

The tiger ended up moving into the village, but had some trouble getting along with the residents, so she decided that she wanted to do something for everyone as an atonement to her past misdeeds. She does something thinking, and eventually decides to cook up a hot meal for everyone, as it will not only warm the heart, but also remind her of the bird’s kindness to her. However, she didn’t know what the residents liked to eat, so she turned to the bird for advice. The bird suggests making hot pot, and the tiger agrees to make it. Unfortunately, the tiger was not used to cooking a portion for more than three people, and was beginning to get discouraged. Just then, the turtle appears upon smelling the cooking pot, and after hearing the tiger’s struggles, asks to taste test the soup. Turns out, the recipe was just fine, there simply were not enough ingredients being used, which led to the stew having a rather bland taste. The turtle then rather sternly, asks if she could help and teach her. The tiger is reluctant, believing that she needs to do everything herself to make it count as atonement, but the turtle reminds her that she’s already a resident, and that the ingredients simply cannot be wasted. She then sends off the tiger to go fetch ingredients from all of the houses, including a snake and raccoon’s homes. The tiger wasn’t sure if the villagers would be willing to share their food with her, but they all did after catching a whiff of the distant pot. After a while, the hot pot was finished, and although thankful for the help, the tiger worries that her efforts of atonement had failed. As the turtle ponders on how to respond, the bird suddenly appears with all the townspeople, which leads the tiger to further feel guilty for supposedly burdening them. The turtle interjects, saying that they also owed the tiger an apology for refusing to help her when she was freezing until the bird stepped in. The tiger realized that their assistance was their own way of atonement, and everyone began to eat together in harmony. It would be a heart warming meal that none of them would soon forget.

Back in the present, Shizuka suggests that they should have hot pot for dinner. Sunao agrees, and tells Shizuka that a nearby shopping district is hosting a game competition, where hot pot ingredients could be won. With Chiharu joining in, the three set off for the event.

(Continued in Chiharu’s Bird costume story.)

A Magical Girl who wants to lead the Tokime Tribe to a new beginning. She prays for peace in the Land of the Rising Sun and for peace for her family at the auspicious first sunrise of the year. Since her Doppel is working to have as much fun as possible from the very first day of their break, it reacts sensitively to things that its master is interested by, and continually works to entertain her. It will easily resort to cheating in order to assist its master: it not only deems her quiz answers correct no matter how many mistaken answers she gives, but it even tries to grant her victory in the New Year broadcasts’ channel viewership wars. On top of that, this Doppel blesses its master with dreams of auspicious beginnings when she sleeps at its kotatsu, so she seems to have become utterly inseparable from it.

Side Story

Shizuka Tokime's (First Sunrise) Side Story

The story begins with everyone discussing new year's traditions - Ryouko is shocked that the Tokime village doesn't have the soba-making custom; to her, the year doesn't feel finished unless she partakes! Asahi agrees, saying that soba tastes better somehow at the end of the year. All this gets Shizuka curious, but everyone in the village is too busy to make soba...but Asahi suggests Shizuka join a soba-making workshop. Chika jumps in and says wild duck goes great with soba, but alas, Asahi points out that no workshop opens with a duck hunt.

But once Ryouko points out that you get free buckwheat flour as a souvenir, Shizuka is game. While this goes on, Chiharu and Sunao walk out, now dressed in their New Year's best; Shizuka is very pleased with their new outfits. Chiharu's parents picked out hers, while Sunao seemed to choose hers by herself; she was unsure if it'd look good, but is now reassured otherwise, with Asahi pointing out the lace is a nice accent. Shizuka says she has a special New Year's outfit of her own...but she'll need it sent from her mom's house, first.

The next day, Shizuka's got her costume in hand, and goes to get changed in the temple. While she's out of the room, Sunao explains to Chika that the outfit is a special one for the Tokime Village's new year's ceremony, in which they welcome the first sunrise by sealing away evil spirits. It's actually Sunao and Charu's first time participating, and this is also the first year the tribe has hosted it since Mikoshiba's death - in the past, Mikoshiba and her cohort of dancers had operated the ceremony. They kept the secrets of the ceremony to themselves, so now the Tokimes don't know how to perform it correctly, and need to figure it out. Just then, they hear a yelp from the dressing room - the outfit turns out to be too small on Shizuka. They can't do the ritual like this - to her distress, they can't even make soba! (Ryouko points out that this probably isn't the time to be concerned about that)

Once things get calmed down, they review their options - Mikoshiba's dancers normally served as the tailors for this costume, and without them, that option's out. Asahi suggests a kimono shop, given that Mizuna has specialists in them; at this, Chika seems to have an idea when she hears this...but she just can't remember what it was, so they'll have to phone around to various shops in the area. Given the end of the year, though, it might be hard to squeeze in an appointment...so Shizuka decides if all else fails, she can just squeeze into the outfit and manage. But all the problems are extensive - things like the hem being too short, the shoulders too tight, so on and so forth...Chiharu thinks this will be a recipe for disaster, so Shizuka proposes they fix the costume themselves.

Chika notes they don't have the skills between them to even start on that, but Shizuka has a better idea - she understands that Kamihama is the go-to place for getting outfits changed! She assumes this must be referring to Kanoko, whom she'd met in her MGS; the Kamihama girls all call her a "stunning" fashion designer. While Kanoko might be in winter recess from school, they figure they ought to try paying her a visit anyway; if school fails, they can try visiting the factory instead. Chiharu and Sunao gear up to go find Kanoko, but Shizuka insists she'll be fine on her own - besides, she wants to let the proper outfit be a surprise for her friends. Sunao implores that Shizuka contact them if she gets lost, just as Shizuka walks out the door. Once gone, Chiharu has another concern on her mind - Shizuka has proven herself to be someone who takes on all her burdens alone, without reaching out to her loved ones for support or talking about her issues...she wishes Shizuka would let other people assist and pamper her, too, since they all care about her. What can they do to help Shizuka...? With that question in mind, the Tokime girls all start to hatch a plan.

Next, Shizuka has arrived at the gates of Mizuna school; she was so confident heading up here, but there's so many people around that she's grown nervous. Fortunately, Sana spots her, as do Tsumugi and Manaka, the latter also recognizing Shizuka as a member of the Tokimes. After greetings, Shizuka explains that she's here to talk to Kanoko about clothes, which flummoxes Sana and Manaka; but Tsumugi blithely gets Kanoko rounded up anyway.

Shizuka explains her task to Kanoko as Manaka gently tries to warn Shizuka that this might not be the best idea; Kanoko adds that she hasn't worked with kimonos all too much. But Shizuka insists she trusts in Kanoko's refined taste (which is a foreign word she struggles with, likely not understanding the meaning of it), and Manaka realizes to herself that there's a fundamental miscommunication - tailoring an outfit isn't a matter of refined tastes...

Still, Shizuka presses ahead, and Kanoko agrees to take the job. While Manaka wants to leave this be and not meddle, she knows she'll feel guilty if she leaves it alone... Tsumugi, on the other hand, thinks Kanoko's designs all look scrumptious. Kanoko notes she'll need a space to work on the outfit, but it'd be tricky to use school right now, so Manaka steps in and says she borrow a space in Walnut's to work. And wherever Walnut's is involved, Tsumugi and Sana are, too!

Once they've got their home base setup, Manaka is busy with something, so she'll just be present keep an eye on affairs. Kanoko insists Manaka has nothing to fear, but Manaka mutters to herself that this is precisely what she's afraid of. Before she leaves, Manaka asks that if things go upside-down, Sana should grab her for help - Sana is the only one she can trust! As Manaka leaves, Tsumugi wonders what that last thing Manaka said was all about, but mentions she thinks Manaka got a call on their way to Walnut's...

Anyway, it's time for business! Shizuka is a bit nervous here in Walnut's; she just can't get used to it no matter how often she comes...Tsumugi agrees whole-heartedly, though Sana points out she must be fidgety in a different way - the delicious smell of food fills Tsumugi with anticipation! But now's the time for seriousness: after surveying the costume, Kanoko notes it's very distinct from a standard kimono, which is already a bit out of her wheelhouse...but Shizuka insists Kanoko is the only one who can do this job. As Kanoko and Shizuka get hyped, Sana thinks to herself that she's worried...but Kanoko is really their main option left, especially if Shizuka so insists.

Kanoko remarks that while she's not too experienced, she has done some higher-level Japanese dressmaking in class; Tsumugi realizes that they really do have students working on kimonos in the higher grades. Kanoko explains how you fix the length of a kimono in some technical terms, which befuddles Shizuka, but the point is - Shizuka's outfit is designed very differently from the traditional kimono...which just means she'll have to rely on unconventional means to fix it! Tsumugi and Shizuka are amped, and Sana...keeps on worrying.

Kanoko goes over ways she can fix the costume and explains a bit of why Sunao's kimono has lace on it; Shizuka loved the design of Sunao's and is eager to have lace added to hers. At this, Sana thinks things seem to be going well...so maybe they sold Kanoko short? Sana helps explain different types of lace - they're not just white, have various patterns, and so on; Kanoko jumps in and says she has a recommended lace design, which gives Sana pause. But Kanoko says that before they do anything, they'll sketch out the design first, with some of her touches added to it, and...

...Tsumugi and Shizuka love it.

Kanoko proudly thinks back to her mushroom mermaid costume from Swimsuit Homura's MGS, remarking how much people had to say about it, and decided to channel some of that energy into the reworked outfit, too. But all of a sudden, Tsumugi realizes something - the ritual outfit has been moth-eaten! With all the fuss, Shizuka hadn't noticed; so now there's lots of holes they need to patch up, too...but Tsumugi suggests they use applique, which Kanoko, ever the diligent fashion designer, has on hand!

She has a golden omurice applique, which delights Tsumugi for obvious reasons and Shizuka for its brilliant, sun-like color; Kanoko offers ones in many other shapes colors to boot. Shizuka is happy she can add on all the ones she likes since there are so many holes to cover. Next is to determine the lace design for the coat...they decide Sana must have some good ideas, and they all turn to her. Sana clams up, racking her brain until Tsumugi suggests Sana just add on something she likes, and Sana, without thinking, blurts out "cats!" And so Kanoko sketches in a cat-shaped design with the lace, which Shizuka gushes about it looking "strong!", and they proceed to add it all over the collar...which inspires Tsumugi that to make this outfit look REALLY strong, they should write "TOKIME" in English on the back! At this point, it's all poor Sana can do to hold on for dear life.

And with that, the design is set! The dork trio raves about it being a cutting-edge, modern urban design, and Sana is helplessly watches this unfold. But if Shizuka likes it...it's okay, right...? With that, Kanoko will get to work, gunning to get the outfit complete in time for the ceremony, and bids the others adieu.

With that, Manaka wraps up her work, and checks on the girls, noting Sana's hundred-yard stare. At Manaka's prompting, Sana stammers out that she made a horrible mistake...and Manaka is alarmed, asking the others what on earth they did to poor Sana - "She looks like she just got broken out of being brainwashed!" Manaka gets her hands on the outfit design, and screams something like, "What the hell is THIS ritual about?! Are you summoning evil gods and curses?! What are you thinking?!"

Tsumugi pouts, saying they all worked hard on it! Manaka says they worked hard, alright, but for the wrong cause...how did this happen with Sana as chaperone? Alas, Sana explained that the girls all looked so happy and were having so much fun, she couldn't bring herself to object... Manaka understands, saying it's not Sana's fault. Manaka decides to get them all something to eat so they can regain their bearings and think things over.

Once the girls have had their food, they praise Manaka for her skills. Now that they've all calmed down, they take another look at the design - this time, Shizuka is...less enthusiastic. It's a bit too ostentatious now that the hype has died down, but she doesn't want to offend Kanoko by going back on the design, given how hard she worked to make the design, despite Manaka's reassurances. Still, the key thing is whether Shizuka can successfully perform the ritual in that getup, which...Shizuka can't.

While they'll get Kanoko to call off the redesign, that still leaves the fundamental problem at hand. The kimono shops Shizuka called are all closed...but Sana asks if Shizuka had tried asking Mifuyu for help, given her family's occupation. Shizuka realizes that's who Chika must have been thinking of earlier but couldn't recall. Still, once they reach out to Mifuyu, she explains the craftsman she requested is out sick and can't pull off the tailoring by New Year's Eve...but she suggests they ask Mitama for help instead. When Tsumugi mentions Mitama's previous works, Shizuka thinks back to Mitama and the swimsuits she Coordinated and immediately objects, but Manaka tells her that Coordinators make outfits other than swimsuits, too.

With this, Shizuka realizes something - when she was told that Kamihama City was the go-to place for modifying magical girl outfits, perhaps people weren't talking about Kanoko, but Mitama and the Coordinators. Manaka wishes someone had remembered Mifuyu in time before this whole debacle played out; Shizuka apologizes for all the trouble, but Sana reassures her, saying what matters is that things are getting fixed now. As they and Tsumugi chat, they realize Manaka has ducked out again...when she comes back in and they ask what's up, Manaka says she's got a little secret in store for Shizuka, which she'll explain later.

We transition to Mitama's shop, who's feeling quite amused at the fact she got mixed up for Kanoko. Still, Shizuka having explained things, Mitama agrees to the commission; Shizuka promises to pay her for it, which has Mitama praising her manners. They swiftly get things set up - Mitama asks that Shizuka picture what she wants the new outfit to be. Shizuka goes into her trance, at first thinking of Kanoko's glorious design, before double-taking and focusing on the ritual instead...a cup that seals away evils...a traditional costume passed from generation to generation...breaking free from Mikoshiba's reign, and the Tokime Tribe alone performing this sacred ritual...peace in the village and in the Land of the Rising Sun...the rising sun...and safe and happy new year...the things she must protect... And the scene ends with a flash of light.

And so Shizuka's new outfit is born! The Coordination went off without a hitch - Shizuka has a strange feeling in her, that's she's a new person. Mitama takes Shizuka to a mirror, and Shizuka is delighted - it's absolutely perfect! In a way, formal wear actually makes her feel more determined, knowing she carries her tribe upon her shoulders. There's so much she wants to protect...so much she's carrying on her shoulders. She thanks Mitama for letting her return to her initial resolve, and they bid each other a happy new year.

We close with Shizuka coming home. Her friends expect her to get changed, but Shizuka surprises them all with a flash of light, manifesting her new form! She explains Mitama did it - long story - which goes against what she said at the start about having Kanoko do it, but Ryouko gives a hearty laugh, saying she gets it. Chiharu realizes why Manaka was so worried earlier - which leads into the fact that the Tokimes and Manaka have been putting together a gift for Shizuka today...Manaka helped them all get lessons in how to make New Year's soba by tracking down a soba shop to teach them! Shizuka is shocked, but Charu and Sunao tell her that they want to spoil Shizuka once in a while - she works so hard alone. They're all excited to help teach Shizuka, who thanks them both from the bottom of her heart.

At the end of the day, Chiharu, Sunao, and Shizuka are ringing in the new year with handmade soba - they decide it's a great way to end the year and bring in a new one, and are happy to celebrate it together. Shizuka vows that she'll make the coming year a good one.

Trivia

  • Shizuka has been living in the secluded Tokime Village all her life and has a lot of trouble adjusting when they go to Kamihama. It is shown that she had only seen trains in photos, seldom traveled by car, and also does not know what a smartphone or IC card is. At one point she even gets stuck on the subway turnstile and has trouble using a vending machine. In the comic Magia Report, she calls chocolate "tasty black sugary treats".
  • In Mitama's Special Training - Shizuka Episode, it is confirmed that Shizuka has been homeschooled.
  • It is said in Chapter 2 of Arc 2 that, she may have contracted at most three years before the main story takes place.
  • Shizuka knows little to no English, but very skilled in handling complicated kanji. Ironically, her VA speaks English very fluently, as she has been living most of her life in Australia.
  • Her Doppel is named after a Hindu goddess of the same name (whose name can mean either "to cross" or "star"), a form of Shakti (a primordial cosmic entity who represents the dynamic forces that move throughout the entire universe).
    • A version of a Hindu creation myth claims that when the Earth was first created, it only had water and land, and lacked the ability for life to spring forth without the sun. The two creation deities changed forms, one of them becoming Tara: Tara has the capability to produce light, energy and heat. When the power met with that of the other deity, their combined power became the source of the sun. When their combined powers got integrated in the sea, many pulsating energy orbs were created, in which it led to the expansion of energy. This most likely references the Tokime Tribe's goals to replicate and help expand Kamihama's Doppel field.
    • Tara is also the name of a Buddhist diety known as the "mother of liberation". She is said to have be created from the tears of the entity Avalokiteśvara when he beheld the suffering of the world. Tara is known to manifest as a teenage girl and according to one legend, swore to always manifest in a female form to show that anyone can be saved regardless of gender.
    • Outside of its Hindu/Buddhist themes, Tara has long hair, a black beak, and three scaled tails that resemble fish fins. It's appearance is likely inspired by the Amabie, a Japanese supernatural mermaid monster known for predicting good harvests and disease outbreaks. The Amabie's image is a source of healing.
  • During her Doppel Sequence, there is an animation error where Shizuka has three hands.
  • During Shizuka's transformation scene, there are countless remains of Magical Girls in the water. It is presumed that these are the remains of Tokime Tribe's Magical Girls who were sacrificed for various wish agreements and disposed of by successive Mikoshibas.
  • The Papa New Year's Memoria refers to a "yakuman". This is a particularly high-value hand in mahjong that is extremely difficult to achieve, akin to a royal flush.
