Doppel Description

TOTENTANZ (Totentanz)

The Doppel of memento mori.
Its form is flower petals.
The master of this Doppel resents her environment and wishes to destroy everything. Her Doppel never forgets that death comes to all things equally. It covers everything with dancing flower petals and escorts girls elegantly with its white gloves. Like its master, it isn't able to attack directly, but its power, which is connected to the end of all things, is utterly terrifying - the magic of anything hidden under its flower petals rots away to nothing. The more the master relies on this Doppel, the closer her left arm will get to becoming completely one with it.

Side Story

Mitama Yakumo's Side Story

Ayaka Mariko and Shizuku Hozumi go to Mitama's place in order to decide what place they should visit next. Ayaka asks Mitama to throw darts on a map. The dart lands on the Japan Trench, a deep area in the Pacific Ocean. When Mitama says they're heading to the bottom of the ocean, Shizuku says she's going to leave. She says that while aimlessly wandering is fine, she doesn't want to be made fun of. A worried Ayaka runs after Shizuku. Mitama thinks that she can understand Shizuku's desire to find a place where she belongs, but in her own case that place was stolen from her.

[Shizuku and Ayaka's side of this story is continued in Wings in the Wind.]

Felicia Mitsuki appears, having heard Mitama muttering to herself. She says she's here for an adjustment, but admits that she also wants to know who Mitama is. Mitama, stutters a bit and says that it's cooler to be mysterious. Felicia says she still wants to know, but Mitama ignores her question. Afterward, Mitama thinks Felicia won't give up figuring her out. At Yachiyo Nanami's house, Felicia is scolded by Iroha Tamaki and Yachiyo for poking into Mitama's affairs. Felicia asks if they want to know themselves. Yachiyo admits she's interested, but won't force it out of Mitama. Iroha says they can't just investigate when they have school. Felicia gets an idea and runs off with Sana Futaba.

Later on, Mitama is at class and sees Felicia and Sana there. Felicia confirms that Mitama goes to Daitou Academy. Sana is surprised, since Mitama usually stays at Shinsei Ward. Felicia says they're going to keep watching to learn more things about Mitama. She says they might find out how to make adjustments themselves. During class, the teacher says Mitama got full marks on her tests again, but is worried about her attendance. Mitama says she doesn't feel like coming, much to the teacher's annoyance. After class, Felicia and Sana try to look into Mitama's bag, but she catches them in the act.

Mitama admits she was surprised they tailed her all the way until lunch. When Felicia says she just wanted to learn about adjusting, Mitama says it's a matter of individual magic and she couldn't teach them anyway. She tells them to go back to their own school after lunch. The two girls leave. Mitama thinks she's been present long enough and should leave herself. Suddenly a voice calls to her. The voice belongs to Kanagi Izumi, who says she'll stop by that night.

Later, at Mitama's place, Kanagi asks if Mitama is alright. Mitama says it's fine. Kanagi says that if people know where Mitama's from, she might get customers looking for her outside her usual place. Mitama says there aren't many magical girl in Daitou at the moment, and she doubts everyone would come all the way to school to see her. She then asks if Kanagi has come for adjustments. Kanagi says she has, but also says she thought Mitama might want someone to practice fighting with. Mitama says that she's finally learned to use her magic outside of adjustment, and says it's just one way Kanagi has helped her.

Kanagi says she doesn't need to be thanked, since they're two of a kind. Mitama is glad to hear that, but says it might be dangerous to stay with her. Mitama explains her magic is like a curse. It doesn't work on witches, but it can manipulate the magic of other magical girls. By purposely failing an adjustment, she can destroy an opponent from within. Kanagi says Mitama is unique, but Mitama says she's just ordinary. Mitama narrates that she's an energetic 17-year old who grew up in Daitou, attends Daitou Academy, barely attends school, and always gets a perfect score on tests.

Later, Felicia hangs a sign at Mitama's place. It asks for information on Mitama, saying that Felicia will pay in "Decagon Ball Bald Hermit" stickers. (A reference to famous manga and anime Dragonball). Mitama arrives and says she can just take down the poster, but finds it cute. After Felicia leaves, Tsukuyo Amane and Tsukasa Amane arrive. Mitama nearly calls them the "Tooty Fluty" sister, which annoys the twins. Mitama admits she picked it up from other people, to the twins' surprise and disappointment. The twins then say they're there to see how Mitama was doing, saying they heard people were sniffing around about her.

The twins then notice the poster. When they see Felicia made it, Tsukuyo says she feels even more worried. Mitama says it's fine, but Tsukuyo says there are some people who remember Mitama at Mizuna Girls' Academy. Mitama acknowledges that Tsukuyo used to be her classmate. Tsukuyo says she still remembers what happened, and asks if Mitama wants to stop Felicia. Mitama instead asks if Tsukuyo believed in "the story that literary magazine printed". When Tsukuyo says she doesn't, Mitama says it's fine as long as there are people who believe in her. However, she then asks Tsukuyo for a favor.

At Mizuna Girls' Academy, the students discuss an incident from two years ago, whose perpetrator supposedly cursed the school. As Tsukuyo watches, she thinks back to Mitama's favor: Mitama asked her to spread the story itself, to prevent it from being altered. Tsukuyo hopes the gossip ends quickly and admits she added a small embellishment of her own. Manaka Kurumi goes to Ria Ami and Mayu Kozue and tells them about a rumor where the school is cursed. Ami says evil spirits are no match for her. Mayu says that Manaka doesn't know the truth because she wasn't enrolled in the Academy two years ago. Ria says it would be easier to explain if they found the literary magazine from the time. Mayu says she knows they keep back issues where the art club keeps it's supplies.

After reading the magazine, Manaka meets Sana and gives her a bento. This appears to be a daily occurrence for them. Manaka asks Sana if she has heard about the rumors about Mitama. When Sana says she hasn't, Manaka explains that Mitama used to be a student at Mizuna, but withdrew before Manaka or Sana enrolled in the academy. Manaka explains what she read in the magazine, but says she can't really believe it because it sounds too malicious. Sana says Felicia has been investigating Mitama, and wonders if that's why the rumor is spreading.

Later, Momoko Togame defends Mitama from a familiar. Afterward, she asks if Mitama will take down the poster. However, Mitama finds it cute. When Momoko still shows concern, Mitama asks if Momoko really believes she pushed down a classmate she hated. Momoko says she believes in the Adjuster she knows. Mitama says Momoko is being vague, but thanks her for her kindness. Mitama then admits that event forced her to return to Daitou, though there was no ill will. Mitama narrates that where she grew up she was famous for her beauty and intelligence, and attended Mizuna until there was a certain incident.

Later, Yachiyo and Iroha bring Felicia to Mitama in order to make her apologize. Sana is there to apologize too. In a flashback, Sana tells Yachiyo that she learned Tsukuyo was asked by Mitama to spread the rumor in Mizuna. Felicia says she didn't want Mitama to suffer. Yachiyo scolds her while Iroha says they went too far. Iroha decides they should go to apologize to Mitama together. Back in the present, Mitama tells them not to worry about it. However, Felicia gives her a Bald Sage sticker as an apology. After Mitama accepts it, she says they're even. Later, Mitama talks with Kanagi and says things have sorted themselves out. Kanagi says Mitama can't be too optimistic. Mitama says it's fine because only Kanagi knows her true self. She admits if she didn't have Kanagi, she would have known peace.

The story flashes back to two years ago. Mitama narrates that she's always been skilled at sports and academics. In elementary school she took Mizuna's middle school entry exam, and won a free tuition. However, there were several people at Mizuna who looked down at Mitama due to her origins. Mitama spent two years trying to change the perceptions of her home town. During her third year, a girl Mitama thought was a friend tried pushing her down the stairs. Mitama dodged it, but bumped into another classmate who fell down the stairs instead. Mitama admits she wasn't sure exactly what happened, but the school newspaper and literary magazine distorted the incident. Mitama was then encouraged to leave the school voluntarily

When Mitama returned to Daitou, she only found scorn from other students, saying that she's a disgrace to Daitou. Mitama was bullied for hurting the district's reputation. When a student says she feels bad for Mitama's younger sister, Mitama snaps. She yells at the students for putting her on a pedestal, stabbing her in the back, and threatening her family. She then wields a fire extinguisher, but is stopped by Kanagi. Kanagi tells Mitama not to give up. Kanagi then says the students are less than trash because they don't judge based on individual merit. She tells them not to base their own value on someone else. The students leave, and Kanagi welcomes Mitama back. Mitama thanks her.

Later, Mitama tells Kanagi she feels empty, and only has hatred in her. Kanagi says that Kamihama is rapidly developing boom time, and Mitama should resent its history, not its people. Mitama says that words and actions come from people, so of course she has to hate them. Kanagi says they're being manipulated by history, taking it's relics into themselves and losing their sense of self. Kanagi asks Mitama not to resent them, but Mitama thinks she can't be satisfied by that. On a rooftop, Mitama yells out her frustrations, saying she hates everyone. It is then that Kyubey arrives. When Kyubey offers her a contract, Mitama wonders if she's gone crazy. Kyubey says she's sane, and if she makes a wish she'll find out if she's crazy herself. Convinced, Mitama makes her wish:

"I want to become the one that destroys Kamihama."

Back in the present, Kanagi says she was surprised Mitama became a magical girl. Mitama says she couldn't even fight a familiar back then. Kanagi wonders if it was because of Mitama's resentment, or because her Soul Gem darkened quickly. Mitama says she was saved by Kanagi's support. Kanagi admitted she didn't think Mitama would survive, since there weren't that many witches in Kamihama at the time. Mitama says she planted resentment in the land herself, thinking "go die" at people. It's then revealed Mitama was saved by someone she calls "Sensei", who was in the same position Mitama was and taught her how to adjust as a way to survive.

Mitama apologies for getting Kanagi caught up in remembering. Kanagi says it reminds her of her initial resolution: Just as Mitama wanted to destroy the city, Kanagi thought that history must be erased. Because of their similarity, Kanagi says her spirit stirred again. Kanagi says she'll see Mitama the next day at school, but Mitama says she isn't going that day. Kanagi tells her not to overwork herself. Mitama narrates that she wished to destroy the city out of resentment, but because she began Adjusting and seeing the memories of others it feels like her hatred is dissipating bit by bit due to everyone's kindness. Mitama says that even if she regrets it, she can't run from her wish.

Mitama Yakumo's Costume Stories

While wandering through Sankyo Ward, Mitama meets Iroha, Yachiyo, and Felicia. Mitama greets them, but Iroha at first does not recognize her and apologizes for not greeting her immediately. Mitama asks if she forgot her face, but before Iroha can explain, Felicia tells her that they didn't recognize her because she was wearing the Daito Academy uniform, stating that she looks weird because she feels like she's like an adult cosplaying. Yachiyo holds back her laughter as Mitama claims that she is still a high school student and that it is rude to tell her that she is older than she really is, but Felicia can't believe that is the truth. Mitama asks Iroha if she thinks the same, but she denies it while Mitama asks if she looks bad in her uniform, but Felicia, to annoy her, tells her not to worry, because there are adults who dress in uniforms as a hobby, so "she doesn't look strange". Mitama gets upset as Yachiyo begins to burst out laughing, but Mitama asks her why she laughs so much. Yachiyo apologizes and agrees with Felicia that Mitama looks strange, since they are not used to seeing her like that, stating that Mitama "doesn't look like an active high school student" at all. An annoyed Mitama tells Yachiyo that she knows "her little secret": that while she was cleaning her old things she put on her old high school uniform again, so she says that he is not the one to criticize her when she is an adult who wears high school uniforms. Yachiyo blushes while Mitama continues saying that she also knows that Iroha saw Yachiyo and starts laughing, so Yachiyo angrily realizes that Mitama knew that because he saw her memories the last time she went to get adjusted, to which Mitama says is true. Iroha and Felicia however do not laugh, as they consider that makes Mitama more scary.

Showing her perspective during the event Summer Treasure, Mitama is looking at the stars next to Ui and Karin. Mitama thinks the view of the sky is beautiful while Ui says that Touka and Nemu would like to see it. Karin is excited, but Ui suddenly mentions "the summer triangle" and as you can see. Mitama is surprised that Ui knows about the stars, but Ui says it's because Touka taught her. Ui begins to list the names of the stars that compose it by its scientific names: Deneb in Cyganus, Altair in Sagittarius and Vega in Lyra. An excited Mitama then asks Ui if she knows about the common names of Vega and Altair, to which Ui tells her that in her culture they are known as Orihime and Hikoboshi, to which Mitama agrees.

Karin recognizes the names of the Tanabata characters and asks who Deneb could be or if the star has no relation to the Tanabata story, but neither Mitama nor Ui know the answer. Mitama proposes that Deneb could be another suitor of Orihime and that it is a love triangle. The three girls, mainly Mitama, begin to make up a story about this second suitor and how he appears every six years, but was ultimately rejected by Orihime, while Mitama suggests that "he gained true love by giving up his beloved."

At that moment it is revealed that Kanagi and Kyoko are listening to everything. Kanagi tells Mitama not to talk nonsense while Kyoko claims that everything they said is far from the original legend. Mitama asks if they can't use her imagination, which surprises Karin and Ui, who didn't realize they had made up the story. The girls finally go to sleep in their bamboo shelter, but before going to bed Mitama thinks about the Tanabata. Mitama says that since she is a magical girl she can't make a wish again, but she still asks the stars that they all have a bright future.

A Magical Girl who works hard and plays hard from the first day of the year. She is very fond the kimono that she got from Yachiyo, so she infused it with magic in order to wear it in battle. With her cards as her weapon, she attacks those who fail to play her game correctly.

Side Story

Mitama Yakumo's (Kimono) Side Story

The following is a summary posted on 4chan's /pmmm/ general by Summary Anon.

Mitama has no plans other than enjoying the New Year with her family. She wants to try something new and aims to clean up her shop first, but she is bogged down by work.

Eventually, she is helped out by Asuka, Sasara, Hinano and Emiri and the shop is cleaned up perfectly, the floor even sparkling clean. She got the idea of holding a party from Momoko, Kaede and Rena who also plan to do something for Mitama as thanks.

That night, Kanagi visits, and Mitama asks her about New Year events and decorations. She eventually decides to decorate her store, but Kanagi warns her about the price, and advises her to do DIY decorations instead. Mitama accepts Kanagi's suggestions.

The next day, Kanagi and Konomi visited Mitama with some already made decorations. Some are extra from Kanagi's maid cafe, and Konomi is experienced with making such decorations since the flower shop she worked at is having a seasonal menu since Christmas was a success. The three of them made many beautiful decorations and set it up at the store.

The next day, Mitama realizes she has no plans for holding a party and no one is visiting that day. Just as she is feeling lost, Mikazuki manor team visits, bringing with them a beautiful kimono and new year food. They say it is their way to thank Mitama for her help.

With Yachiyo's help, Mitama is able to put on the kimono (the gatcha ver.) and is touched by their actions. Momoko trio, Asuka and Sasara visited as well, and it is revealed that the kimono was chosen by everyone for Mitama.

They have a great time, and Mitama is greatly touched by their actions. Although she feels a little lonely when everyone returns home, she is filled with warmth and happiness, and think this will be a great year for everyone.

Magical Girls who gained the powers of mermaids while investigating the folklore of Diviners. Although Mitama based the swimsuits off her interest in mermaids, Momoko feels embarrassed to wear it. At Mitama's suggestion, the two promised to be mermaids alone together in the peaceful sea.

Momoko & Mitama's (Mermaid) Side Story

The story opens with Momoko and Mitama playing on the beach together, with Momoko chauffeuring Mitama around on a floatie. For their next activity, Mitama says she can give Momoko a turn by tugging her around, but Momoko declines. Mitama tries thinking of alternates, like a sand bath, beach tag, splash fights...while Momoko is happy to see Mitama having a good time, she knows they're not here to goof off. They sober up, reflecting on how they got here...

Now we go back to where it all began - in the Coordinator's office, with just Mitama and Momoko present. Mitama explains there's an upcoming event called "The Beachside Perfect Pair Contest." The grand prize is a scallop BBQ on the beach, along with what's really caught Mitama's eye - a ticket to a special event called Candy World. Mitama wants to win the prize as a gift to Mikage, and she wants Momoko to help her get it. Momoko asks about Kanagi, but she's busy and can't make the contest. Mitama adds that there's a third element of the grand prize - a giant stuffed doll of Mocha Bunny, a character that Rena and Kaede adore.

Momoko still hems and haws - Mitama's usual game plan would be to convince other magical girls to enter the contest for her. Mitama confesses she considered doing that, but given how she's gone out of her way to keep Mikage out of KMU, she doesn't want to make KMU members go to such lengths for the sake of someone who isn't part of it. After a bit more hesitance, Momoko agrees, deciding she wants to get the stuffed rabbit for Kaede and Rena. And the very instant Momoko agrees, Mitama drags her away on a shopping trip.

Their first stop is the beach boutique, even though they both already have swimsuits. Mitama remarks she wants to go to the beach and play on the morning of the contest - a beach trip would be a waste if they didn't make the most of it, after all. As they look around, various cute patterns and styles subtly catch Momoko's eye, but she doesn't fess up to it. Mitama plays along, but in thinking to herself, reveals she of course knows all these sides to Momoko - she's been adjusting her, after all. Still, it's one thing to see these memories and thoughts while adjusting, and a whole other thing to see this side of her in person - Mitama savors the sight.

In they end, they don't buy anything; Mitama says given their limited funds, they need to choose thoughtfully and not on a whim. Momoko admits Mitama is actually pretty good at adhering to that philosophy. This seems to remind Momoko that she needs to pick up some sunscreen. Her preferred brand is in another shop, and since Mitama also has something else she needs to buy, the two go separate ways for now. We cut to Mitama buying some kind of ingredients - we don't know what, but she just thinks to herself that she finds scallops fairly plain, so she's glad to have an alternative. But as she walks out, she bumps straight into the one person she doesn't want to see: Mikage.

Mikage's first move, of course, is to ask what Mitama's up to, and Mitama stalls for an excuse - she doesn't want to even hint that she's going to the beach, which would otherwise risk blowing open the whole surprise to Mikage. She manages to explain she was just picking up ingredients, and quickly turns the question back onto Mikage. Mikage says she's on a recon mission - scouting the candy store for new goods! She soon realizes that she's keeping Sudachi waiting, and scampers off to meet her. Shortly after, Momoko arrives, revealing she was held up by running into Rena and Kaede herself. Just like Mitama, she had to wing some excuse for why she was out there. Momoko asks Mitama what swimsuit she bought, only for Mitama to say she didn't get one - their little shopping trip had a different aim in mind...

After an adjustment session, Momoko opens her eyes to find her and Mitama in new swimsuits - much to her shock, Momoko's is tailored exactly to her tastes. Momoko gets flustered (but is secretly pleased, too), and Mitama praises her for how cute she looks. She can't help but tease Momoko, she says - her reactions are so sincere, so it's worth teasing her just to see them. But that doesn't mean she was lying, through - the swimsuit does look good on Momoko. And she looks positively adorable whenever she's shy. Momoko berates her, Mitama giggles, and with that, the act ends on Mitama's voiced line saying she's nervous - but more than anything, excited for what's to come.

The next part takes us back to the day of the contest, after Mitama and Momoko played around in the intro of the story. Mitama talks about how much they swam, for Momoko to say that what Mitama did was float - poor Momoko was the one who did all the swimming! Mitama teases Momoko a bit, but conveys her gratitude to Momoko for being a good sport about it. The conversation leads Momoko to wonder what the Beachside Perfect Pair contest is about - unfortunately, it's not just participants standing around being cute. Instead, Mitama explains they're tasked to tell a story about a memory they both share of the beach - and looking good while doing it. Essentially, the pairs need to have good chemistry and be in sync when they perform. This is part of why Mitama prepared new swimsuits for them; their outfit and accessories are...coordinated, we should say.

Momoko asks if playing around earlier was for the contest, giving them a memory of the beach they could perform together, but Mitama has a different plan: She'll tell the story of the time she, Kyoko, and the others washed up on a deserted island. Momoko remembers that time, too - she talks about how worried sick she and the others were about Mitama and their friends. While Mitama's group did contact the others ASAP, Momoko couldn't help but worry until she saw for herself that her friends were safe and sound. Mitama seems a bit taken aback and apologizes for worrying Momoko so much.

Momoko, then, wonders if the story will actually be good for the contest - it's really Mitama's memory, not one they both share. Still, it's the most interesting story they've got, and Mitama figures Momoko can just cut in with her side of the story, talking about how worried she was. That settled, Mitama gets Momoko back into more fun and games, and Momoko realizes they've really been getting closer lately - and thinks that if Rena, Kaede, or Mikage saw them having so much fun together...well, they'd be furious for being left out.

Not long after that, Mitama and Momoko head to the contest site, encountering a Witch on the beach enthralling various beachgoers. They team up to make quick work of her - thanks to Mitama making some "little changes" while adjusting Momoko into the new swimsuit. Momoko, asks what she means by "little," but revealing anything more would be blowing open trade secrets, Mitama says. She then giggles, remarking it's the very first time she's ever teamed up with someone to fight a Witch. But before they can do anything else, they, of course, run straight into Rena, Kaede, and Mikage!

They all get into the "what are YOU doing here?!" conversation - Mikage, a trifle suspiciously, says the three of them were tracking down the Witch that Momoko and Mitama just fought, and then blows up on Mitama for being so mean for lying to Mikage. Basically, Mitama (not wanting Mikage to ever go to the beach alone) once told her a story that when beautiful girls go swimming, the god of the sea gets jealous of their beauty and turns them into sea foam, spooking Mikage from ever wanting to swim in the ocean - Rena and Kaede had been the ones to clear things up for her.

Momoko chuckles to herself about this, but Rena and Kaede then turn on Momoko for taking a beach trip without telling the two of them - it clearly wounds them deeply. Mitama and Momoko put their heads together and agree it's time to fess up about everything. They explain the whole story. The trio is still bitter about how much fun the two of them were having, pulling each other around on the floats, playing beach tag...which Momoko realizes is extremely specific and realizes the three of them were stalking them both. Well, yes - but Rena says it's because they all saw how suspicious and cagey Momoko and Mitama had been acting. Before they can get into it, though, an announcer for the contest gives the last call for entrants, and Mitama and Momoko call things off so they can enter the contest in time.

And they win, bringing down the house with roaring laughter and applause. But it wasn't through the deserted island story - it was simply by relaying all of the events of this side story so far. Momoko and Mitama are over the moon, while the other three feel sheepish - in the end, though, all's well that ends well, so they all just agree to chalk it up to a misunderstanding and call it water under the bridge.

Rena, though, announces that the giant stuffed bunny prize is all hers! Kaede protests, saying it was for them both, but Rena says she'll show it to Kaede whenever she asks. Mikage thinks Rena is so awesome for being so assertive, prompting Mitama to tell her not to use Rena as a role model.

They finish their beach trip with the all-you-can-eat scallop BBQ, accompanied by Mitama's homemade sausage that terrifies the girls (which is what Mitama had been shopping for earlier in the story). They feast away, and Momoko and Mitama present the prizes to their loved ones - Rena and Kaede get the stuffed bunny, and Mikage gets the tickets to Candy World, and instantly invites Mitama to join her, making Mitama's heart melt.

With things cooled off, apologies go around from Rena, Kaede, and Mikage for stalking the duo. But Rena adds that she wants no more secrets between Momoko and her and Kaede. Kaede agrees, saying that while the gesture was nice, it broke her heart to see Momoko keeping things secret from them. Momoko vows not to do it again.

Meanwhile, Mikage demands the same from Mitama, only for Mitama to say "Not even for surprises?" Mikage amends her request to keep things secret as much as possible. Seeing Mitama so deftly handle her little sister makes Momoko realize that Mitama's relationship with her sister must be why she's so good with the other magical girls in Kamihama. She never would have seen it if she hadn't entered the contest, and smiles to herself. When Kaede and Rena ask what Momoko is grinning about, Momoko says she's happy she entered the contest. In her voiced line, she says while things certainly didn't go the way she expected...she's glad they did.

So that should wrap things up, right? All the big conflicts are settled, everyone got a nice conclusion to their story...but little do they know, there’s still one more chance encounter up ahead.

In part 3, after eating so much salty food, Mikage wants something sweet to drink. Mitama worries about letting Mikage go out on her own, since Mitama and Momoko are cleaning up the BBQ and can't accompany her, but Rena and Kaede offer to take Mikage to the beach house. The three of them scurry off, having become fast friends, which, at Momoko's prompting, makes Mitama realize she's feeling lonely now that Mikage's run off and made more friends of her own. To Momoko, she really does seem like a typical teenage girl now, instead of her usual self (but Mitama insists she's always a typical peppy teenage girl).

They finish cleaning up, but the three girls still haven't returned... They're about to visit the cafe to see if things are okay, only for someone to call out to Mitama. To Mitama's horror, it's the girl from Mizuna Academy whom she accidentally shoved down the stairs.

Mitama freezes up and zones out for some time until Momoko jars her out of it, thinking Mitama may have heatstroke or something, and wanting to take her someplace to rest. Mitama, though, haltingly explains the truth, that she knocked the girl down the stairs; it seems to be the very first time Momoko's heard of it.

The confession confirms the Mizuna girl's suspicion, and she demands the truth. She explains she spotted Mitama at the contest, and felt driven to confront her - while every story in Mizuna and beyond says Mitama deliberately pushed her, the girl isn't so convinced. She's certainly heard one side of the story - but wants to hear the other. She has the feeling it was all an accident, and wants Mitama to confirm either way. Mitama does not take well to this. She knows full well that people don't really want to hear the truth - people only believe what they want to believe.

A crowd has gathered in the meantime, muttering about the rumors (the story reminds us that the incident involving the girl and Mitama was published in a citywide magazine). People start denigrating Mitama, certain she's causing yet more trouble. Mitama freezes up, worrying about what will happen if Mikage sees this...

But Momoko steps up to her defense, telling the crowd how rude it is to make judgments of people you don't know, and orders them to step off. While Momoko doesn't know what went down back then, she can assure them all that Mitama would never hurt someone on purpose. The crowd soon disperses, and Mitama thinks to herself, well - she's not the kind of person who would deliberately hurt people anymore...all because she has someone who believes in her now and will defend her.

In a soliloquy, Mitama realizes to herself that all this time, she's thought that being with Momoko had been so easy because Momoko didn't know the truth, didn't know the past - but now it's clicked for Mitama that it's more than that. Momoko is someone who is honest and kind at heart - someone who gets angry at injustices, and strives to set things right. Yes, even if Mitama is the one doing the wrong thing. Kanagi, she thinks, is the kind of person who will just agree with her and stand by her decisions no matter what she does. Momoko, on the other hand, will stop Mitama, scold her a bit, and help her see the light.

With the crowd gone, the Mizuna girl apologizes - she was so caught up in her goal that she didn't realize what was happening around them until it was too late. She knows now that Mitama didn't push her - that Mitama would not hurt others deliberately. And knowing that, she now wants to help clear up Mitama's cratered reputation.

Mitama, however, says it's too late - as she alluded to before, the people who denounced her won't change their minds. Digging things up again will only make things worse, so she asks the girl to just leave things be. The girl notes that Mitama has changed a lot. Mitama says she doesn't have to worry about fixing things anymore - because now she has someone who believes in her.

Mikage, Kaede, and Rena finally return, none the wiser - there was a massive line at the beach house due to a special treat: candy ramune! While they were waiting, Kaede brought up how her garden produced a surplus of watermelons, and offered the Yakumo sisters to take a load off her hands, so Mikage says they three of them will be heading to Kaede's house next. There's no point in them staying at the beach, after all - the three of them didn't bring their swimsuits! But Rena asks Mitama and Momoko to have a fun time at the beach together. Kaede agrees, saying they are officially the beachside perfect pair, after all. Mitama says she'll borrow Momoko from Kaede and Rena for a bit, and Mikage agrees she'll let Momoko borrow Mitama in turn - but just this once!

Alone together, Momoko and Mitama need to use their time to the fullest, and the first thing they do is have some ice cream together. Mitama wants to feed Momoko, which makes Momoko flustered, all but certain that Mitama is buttering her up for something later...and when Mitama lays on the guilt trip, Momoko knows what Mitama's doing there, too - teasing her because she knows Momoko is too embarrassed to thank her out loud. So Momoko thanks her, and takes Mitama's bite. With dessert settled, Mitama says she'll take Momoko out some more - her treat, Momoko asks? Yes, Mitama says - and her investment as well.

They banter around a bit, but deep down, Mitama is grateful that even though Momoko knows her past, she's still treating her the same as ever. Mitama was sure the only person who understood her was Kanagi, and that no one else was capable of doing so. Truth be told, she thinks Momoko can't ever really fully understand her suffering - but that's precisely why she cherishes Momoko so much. She knows that Momoko will always be there for her. Even if Mitama herself makes mistakes, Momoko will be there to help her make things right. This realization is one she'll cherish and keep in her heart forever.

Out loud, though, Mitama says now that they've deepened their bond, what kinds of things can she convince Momoko to do with her... A treasure hunt, perhaps! To this, Momoko says she'll go out to many places Mitama...but not to a deserted island. And Mitama goes like "oh, so you do want to go out with me after all", Momoko wonders if she's made a terrible mistake, and Mitama has a good laugh - and we end with Mitama's voice line, saying she can't wait to visit the beach with Momoko again.

A Magical Girl who has given up trying to resist and has chosen to destroy even those she loves. Having taken in grief through adjustment, she is constantly haunted by it. Now that the hope she once saw has withered away, the only path left to her is to give form to her former wishes with minimal damage.

Doppel Description

TOTENTANZ (Totentanz)

The Doppel of Memento Mori.
Its form is Flower Petals.
The master of this emotion resents the environment in which she lives, and works to accept its approaching ruin. Though this Doppel previously lacked any method of granting death directly, its master’s transformation has helped it discover how to pluck lives by itself. The flame dwelling within its scythe burns with the light of the lives it has absorbed, and further absorbs the lives of those who become entranced by its shine. Even if one were to envelop the Doppel and its master with every form of kindness in order to stop them, its flower petals have withered away, and it has torn off every bit of grace that it once possessed. Such kind sentiment would only be smothered in grief and fail to reach them.

Powers and Abilities

Game

Mitama possesses the ability to "enhance" other magical girls through their soul gems, making them much stronger, which has made her both popular and a necessity in Kamihama City. She was taught this skill by Livia Medeiros, who she refers to as her sensei (who was also the one who taught Kanagi Izumi to control her powers) as a way to get by due to the lower number of witches and her inability to fight when she had contracted.

As this ability gives her direct access to girls' souls, she is also able to view their memories; this side-effect is out of her control.

As revealed in Swimsuit Homura's side story, Mitama's Adjustment magic also gives her the ability to modify or change the outfits of magical girls entirely.

Her natural ability, granted by her wish, is destructive in nature; she has learned to use her ability of tampering with magical girls' powers, which had previously been unusable against witches, offensively by "penetrating" her magic into her enemy and destroying them from within. She describes this as "deliberately failing (her) usual procedure", and her power as "similar to a curse".

She has also learned to enchant cloths with magic to use as a weapon, and is currently strong enough to hold her own in battle, though she still primarily relies on her customers to bring her grief seeds.

Anime

Mitama's abilities differ slightly in the anime, and have been expanded upon.

Her ability to Adjust is necessary to stabilize the form Doppels take when they are summoned; if a Magical Girl uses her Doppel too much, while presumably also not being Adjusted frequently to keep up with the overuse, the Magical Girl's body will fuse with their Doppel and will not revert to normal.

It is unclear if she retains her ability to see the memories of those she Adjusts. She claims to "close off (her) own heart" to avoid touching a Magical Girl's inner darkness/Witch to avoid falling into despair herself; thus, it may be presumed that rather than "using" this ability to see memories from the start, which allowed her to bond with other Magical Girls and come to regret her destructive wish in-game, that she has so far suppressed this ability of hers in the anime.

With her cloths, she is able to entrap others in large globular jars they usually cannot break free from. She has been shown to use this to contain Magical Girls who have fused with their Doppels from overuse. She is presumably also responsible for containing many Witches for the Magius, as they are shown to be contained in these same jars throughout the anime, for the purposes of being fed emotional energy harvested by Uwasa and eventually being fed to Embryo Eve.

Observations

  • Mitama's name (みたま) holds references the Shinto concept of a dualistic soul. The Nigi-Mitama represents one's calm, gentle, and benevolent nature, which aligns with the cheerful, supportive Coordinator persona she presents to the world. In contrast, the Ara-Mitama represents a being's wild, wrathful, and destructive aspect, which connects directly to the rage that fueled her wish to destroy Kamihama City.
  • Totentanz, which in German means either "Dance of the Dead," or "Dance of Death" is either a reference to Danse Macabre or a classical symphony of the same name as her Doppel.
  • Mitama, along with the other coordinators, has a magician aesthetic. Mitama specifically does so with her tendency of covering things with cloth and making them disappear.

Etymology

  • The characters in her last name mean "eight" (八) and "cloud" (雲) respectively.
  • Mitama means "honored soul," it's basically translated "ancestor spirit". Yakumo, meanwhile, is a famous poem like Iroha's name is, said to be literally the first poem in Japanese ever written (by Susanoo himself, no less). Extremely roughly translated, it goes: "From eight rising clouds I build a wondrous eightfold fence in Izumo to contain my divine bride; oh wondrous eightfold fence."

Trivia

  • Mitama reveals her age during the "We passed the first of that day" event, where she says that she is only 17 years old after being told that she's like a mother to all magical girls in Kamihama.
  • Mitama has been shown in multiple side stories to be a horrible cook, and incompetent enough with knives to be a danger to those around her. She appears to be oblivious to this.
  • She shares a voice actress with Tsubasa Hanekawa and Tart.
  • Unless Mitama is lying, her backstory appears to have changed significantly in the anime adaptation: Mitama claims to have "always wanted to be a Magical Girl" (whether she referred to the real kind or the kind seen in in-universe fiction is unclear) who wanted to bring happiness and equality to others with her magic. However, she cannot fight Witches because she is too weak, and only has her ability to Adjust. With her dream crushed, she spends her days as an Adjustor to earn Grief Seeds. The circumstances around her wish are not mentioned but her original wish appears in the list of wishes from episode 1.
