"A person becomes naïve if they're too kind. Careless if they're too bold. And no matter how hard you try to protect others, there's no gratitude. Those who can't comprehend such things aren't fit to be magical girls."
— Homura, Madoka Magica Episode 5.

Homura Akemi (暁美 ほむら Akemi Homura) is one of the main characters from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She is first seen by Madoka Kaname in a dream of her fighting a monster in a desolate landscape of skyscrapers. The day after the dream, Homura has transferred to Madoka's school where she gives her ominous warnings.

Personality and Traits

In the original timeline, Homura is portrayed as meek, shy, timid, clumsy and is known around the school for her lack of confidence.[2] She was also known for her physical incapability of performing in P.E. class; she would get dizzy upon doing even the simplest of warm-up exercises.[2] This had the unfortunate result of her being a target of bullying.[5] Overwhelmed by her perceived uselessness, she begins questioning her existence and considered herself to be useless and worthless.[2] Her feelings do not change until she begins her fated friendship with Madoka. Madoka, alongside Mami Tomoe, shows her the ropes and dangers of becoming a Magical Girl and notes that Madoka's own attitude became much healthier with every witch battle.[2] Madoka was also probably the first person to see Homura differently, for the good person that she was and opened her eyes that changed her way thinking about herself.[2]

In an ironic twist, we start to see a transformation on both with each timeline, leading to a role reversal. In the final timeline we see how frail and meek Madoka is, compared to the current Homura whose personality had performed a complete 180-degree turn due to her experiences. Madoka believes she is powerless and worthless, and someone who can't even do anything to save her friends. Homura also believes that Madoka is too kind and reckless for trying to do too much for others.[6] This is probably because Madoka being a Magical Girl boosted her confidence to speak to others by a lot, even cheering a depressed Homura up telling her to live up to her name.[Citation needed] She even asked her to call her by "Madoka" and asking if she could do the same by calling Homura by her first name.[2] For each timeline Homura blocks the contract from occurring at the start, Madoka is just a really selfless girl who cares about others more than herself which causes her to take risks for others but feels hopeless and because of that Homura needs to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn’t make a contract.

In the final timeline, she is immediately depicted as being very intelligent, athletic, distant, and cold, but she is only like this because she has seen so much suffering during her tenure as a Magical Girl.[6] She does not want Madoka Kaname to become a Magical Girl and tries to do anything in order to stop her from making a wish with Kyubey, going as far as to attempting to injure him. Despite her cold attitude towards others, she still very much cares about her friends, Especially Madoka, who considers her best friend, because it is her sole objective to protect her due to the countless amount blood, sweat, and tears she has shed over her jumps in time.

Despite being regarded as emotionless by Sayaka Miki, Homura is far from it. Although she does not easily show signs of remorse, sadness, or pity, it is only because she had grown used to the suffering around her. Her cold nature is from her determination to save Madoka after having failed in her mission to prevent Madoka from becoming a Magical Girl countless times.[2] Homura herself has stated that she always feels badly with each life she unable to save or alter, but nevertheless, it does not slow her down from staying true to her main objective in saving Madoka.

Powers and Abilities

In episode 9, it was revealed that Homura can stop time. However, anyone she touches while the ability is under effect will not be stopped. Along with stopping time, Homura can also reverse time to before her meeting with Madoka. According to an interview in Otona Anime Vol. 20, translated by symbv, here is what Gen Urobuchi said on more of Homura's power: "The weapon that looks like Homura's shield is actually a sand timer. When the flow of the sand is blocked, time is stopped. And when there is no sand on the upper part of the sand timer and then the timer is reverted, one month's worth of time is turned back. But before that stage is reached, only time stopping is possible. This means the special power of Homura is the ability to manipulate one month's time's worth of sand in the sand timer. As for the time passed and then turned back, since it was not the focus in this work, I did not think it through very thoroughly. I think you can say that the world split up and became parallel worlds there." In episode 11, we see Homura's sand run out in the middle of her fight with Walpurgisnacht, verifying this limitation of her time stop powers. Gen Urobuchi stated that he didn't really think too much about the mechanics of Homura's time loops, so the nature of Homura's power is not only a mystery, but it is not fully understood not even by the creative source.

Homura's shield is able to store a countless amount of weapons, as demonstrated by the many pistols, light machineguns, shotguns, rocket launchers, and boxes of ammunition packed inside it. Note that her shield is relatively small and she is able to wear it around her wrist, much like a watch.

Wraith Arc
After Madoka resets the universe, their feelings for each other crystallized into Homura's new soul gem and Homura was granted a new wish. Homura now has the ability to alter people's memories and owing to her new abilities Homura's weapon is instead a black bow similiar to Madoka's. Her shield is no longer able to reset time, however when wraiths stole Homura's power they were shown with the ability to stop time. When Homura uses her black bow to fire arrows, she summons the same magic symbol Madoka does, however her symbol has diamond shapes rather than circles. She has been shown transforming her arrows into birdlike forms and combining them into a crossbow-like form for added power. Homura also has the ability to create wings of energy, shown forming angelic wings when confronting Wraiths in the city and jagged dark wings when walking through the desert.

History

In Madoka Magica

The sequences of events in each timeline

Homura's backstory was revealed in episode 10. She was a transfer student who was hospitalized for a long period of time due to heart disease. The whereabouts and status of her family is unknown, as they are never mentioned in the series. In the original timeline, Homura at this point is physically frail and weak most likely due to her illness. She wears glasses and braided hair in her early insecure depiction shown in episode 10. Later in that episode with renewed determination she undoes her braids and uses her soul gem to correct her vision and to heal her heart condition. From then on she no longer required the use of glasses.

Homura's time-loop officially starts on the 16th of the month in the anime (speculated to be sometime between March and April). She was released from the hospital on the 16th, and transferred to Mitakihara Middle School on the 25th. In the original timeline, she is attacked by a witch and saved by Madoka and Mami. Sometime during the next month, during Walpurgisnacht, she becomes a magical girl while wishing to redo her meeting with Madoka, thus gaining the power to pause and/or rewind time one month.

It is estimated Homura repeated the same month starting on the 16th nearly 100 times before the present timeline in the TV anime. Within these timelines, Homura was able to gradually improve her abilities and acquire items (such as ammunition and weapons from the Japanese military) to prepare for the battle with Walpurgisnacht. She was also able to memorize and deduce through statistics the major events that would occur within all timelines, giving her incredible knowledge about most of her adversaries. The corollary, however, was that Homura experienced the deaths of many of her friends repeatedly, often horrifically. As a general trend, Homura became increasingly distant to Madoka with each repeat of the month.

By the timeline of the TV anime, Homura appeared as a cold and calculating character who is distant from all the characters. She failed to save all of her companions (apart from Madoka), and by Walpurgisnacht, was forced to face the witch alone. She was subsequently defeated by Walpurgisnacht, and seemed just about to succumb to despair before Madoka appears and rewrites the universe with her wish.

After Madoka's revision of the universe, Homura is the only known character to retain her memories of the previous universe. She has possession of Madoka's ribbon, and has a new black bow as her weapon similar to Madoka's weapon. It is unknown if she retained her abilities to manipulate time and space. Homura is shown to have a much closer relationship with Kyuubey, so much so she even confides an entire account about how the old universe worked. She also has the ability to create wings of energy, forming angelic wings when confronting Wraiths in the city, and jagged dark wings when walking through the desert.

In Wraith Arc

Homura appears in the first pages of chapter 1 in flashback. She is shown saying her goodbyes to Madoka as in the last episode of the anime, with Madoka promising to meet her again and giving Homura her ribbons. She doesn't appear again until the end of chapter 2 after Sayaka has been led away by the Law of Cycles and Mami and Kyoko are standing at the station. Homura is introduced as the new transfer student and she leaves the class in order to meet with Mami and Kyoko on the rooftop, Homura wiping away a tear as she remembers meeting Madoka for the first time. They tell Homura about the giant wraith that has been seen lately and agree not to hunt it on their own. After several days of combing the city for the giant wraith and hunting down other more common wraiths, Homura has a short discussion with Kyubey about Madoka and the previous universe. Soon after, she encounters the giant wraith alone and attempts to defeat it herself by unleashing a large arrow of magic at it which takes on the form of a bird. However the giant wraith withstands the attack and is able to surprise Homura and overwhelm her, stealing a portion of her power. A smaller wraith steals Madoka's ribbon from her as well.

After a nightmare, Homura wakes up in Mami's apartment, with Mami bringing her a tray of tea and many lecturing words. She asks Homura to transform into a magical girl, which she does successfully, and then to summon her weapon, which she cannot. Mami concludes that the wraiths stole a portion of Homura's power but has no idea on how to retrieve it. Homura is impatient to go and retrieve her powers, but Mami cautions her to play it safe and leave everything up to her and Kyoko. Homura alters her memories slightly before thanking Mami and leaving. In the city, Homura talks with Kyubey about the memory-manipulation magic she now has and her lack of time-stopping ability. She takes off to search the city when Kyoko runs into Homura while patrolling the streets. She assures Homura she won't tell Mami she saw her up and about knowing Mami would only lecture her further. When asked why she remains in the city despite Sayaka having disappeared, Kyoko responds she is still here to avenge Sayaka. Kyoko agrees to help Homura in finding and defeating the wraith provided she is the one to give the final blow.

Despite using grief cubes, Homura finds her magical power has yet to recover which Kyubey explains is due to her soul gem's lack of capacity after the wraiths stole some of her power. As Homura sits in the park at night, Kyoko walks up to her telling her she's found a clue about the wraiths. Before Homura can come closer, Mami appears and fires at Kyoko, revealing her to be another mutant wraith that had taken on the form of Kyoko with the intent of attacking Homura. Mami summons several muskets and together her and Homura are able to hold off the wraiths but not for long. During the fight, Homura realizes the wraith is using time-manipulation magic. After a voice gives Homura advice, the two magical girls are able to overcome the wraiths' time-stopping ability and seemingly defeat the Wraith-Kyoko with Mami's Tiro Finale. After, the real Kyoko appears and informs them of the fake Sayaka and they agree on rules in order to limit their ability to be taken by surprise by the mutant wraiths. Mami and Kyoko leave, leaving Homura alone. She hears the voice from earlier once more and turns to see Madoka standing before her. However, this is not the real Madoka but a wraith who has taken on her form. She returns Madoka's ribbon to Homura before asking for her help in stopping the giant wraith. The fake Madoka explains how wraiths really work before explaining that the magic they took from Homura corrupted the wraiths, resulting in the mutant wraiths that take on human form. Despite Homura's reluctance in believing her story, she has the wraith follow her back to her apartment. There, Kyubey examines the wraith and confirms it carries a part of Homura's power in her.

After several weeks of searching for the giant wraith, Homura and Wraith-Madoka are no closer to finding the whereabouts of the giant wraith. Wraith-Madoka asks Homura what she really thinks of her since she is taking the form of her most precious friend. Homura snaps at the wraith, telling her she is nothing more than a fake for which Homura holds no shred of emotion for and threatens to kill her for insulting Madoka's wish. But the wraith tells her she is lying to herself and that she is not only a wraith but also Homura's heart.

Mami and Kyoko decide to begin their search from the beginning. Mami is upset to find that Homura had been searching for the giant wraith alone and worries that something may happen to her. Homura snaps at both Mami and Kyoko before taking off. Alone, Homura asks Kyubey what she wished for in order to become a magical girl but Kyubey doesn't know the answer to that. Homura worries that she may have used her memory-altering magic on herself in order to turn her dream of Madoka into memories instead. Wraith-Madoka catches up with Homura and offers to walk her home but not before Mami and Kyoko run into them. However, to Mami and Kyoko the wraith looks nothing like Madoka and only has the form of a mutant wraith wrapped around Homura. They transform into magical girls and prepare to rescue Homura, but Homura instead begs the wraith to save her from being a magical girl. The wraith takes Homura's soul gem and teleports them from the area, leaving Mami and Kyoko behind.

At Homura's apartment, Homura and Wraith-Madoka sit in front of her many monitors and watch as a flashback plays out in which Homura makes her original wish to Kyubey to protect Madoka. Kyubey appears only to admonish Homura for having a wraith eat all of her emotions in order to avoid meeting the Law of Cycles. Outside, the wraiths begin their attack on the city, leaving people dead rather than simply emotionless. As Mami and Kyoko fight their respective battles, Wraith-Madoka and Homura watch from a nearby rooftop. Before the wraiths can bring the final blow to Mami, Wraith-Madoka takes the ribbon from Homura and unleashes several arrows from the air in Madoka's characteristic attack, protecting Mami. The wraith appears as Madoka to even Mami now that she has her ribbon. Together the wraith and Mami are able to work together to take down the two imposters.

By this time the giant wraith has been consumed by the power it took from Homura and transforms into a witch-like creature complete with familiars. The wraith and Mami fight off the familiars but not before Kyoko and Mami are killed by the giant wraith. Wraith-Madoka continues in her struggle to defeat the witch-like wraith alone, but is overwhelmed and soon plummets to her death. Homura watches the battle dispassionately until she suddenly recovers herself and runs to catch the falling wraith. She realizes that Madoka is not a dream as the witch that stands before her is the proof that Madoka existed.

Homura regains her original memories. Upon arriving to the new universe, she discovered that her time-manipulation shield no longer worked and she initially discarded it only to have the shield open a small portal to another world. Homura jumps into the world inside her shield and discovers Kriemhild Gretchen inside. Before she can destroy the shield, she realizes that if a witch is inside her shield then Madoka may also be inside fighting the witch. Instead, Homura used her magic to alter her own memories and causes herself to forget the existence of the time shield.

After Homura and Wraith-Madoka land on the streets below, Homura reaches for the ribbon the wraith is holding and finds herself transported to another world. Her appearance changes to her original appearance with glasses and braids. There, she meets a doppelganger of herself who introduces itself as the personification of Homura's power that was stolen by the wraiths. It explains they are inside the world of her soul gem and that it was freed when the wraith that housed it was destroyed. After being stolen by the wraiths, her magical power was able to take control of one of the mutant wraiths in order to assist Homura. Homura asks her magical power what caused the wraiths to go rogue and her magic explains that it was due to the time manipulation magic coming from another universe with different laws. When Madoka and Homura parted ways in the space outside of the universe, their feelings for each other were so strong that a true miracle occurred and their feelings crystallized into a new soul gem for Homura. Because a miracle was granted to a magical girl without a normal exchange, it became separate from the laws of the universe and was considered in incomplete magic. After some time, this new magic began to interfere with her original magic, causing her shield and Madoka to suddenly link up. After Homura erased her memories of the shield, the wraiths stole the shield and were consumed by the curses that were contained within. Because the curses were a form of emotional energy not known in this universe, it corrupted the wraiths and caused the giant wraith to become a witch destined to destroy the world. Homura's thoughts take on the form of Sayaka, Kyoko and Mami who voice her self doubts in having rewritten her own memories rather than lose the shield and her proof of Madoka's existence. Homura takes off her glasses and undoes her braids, filled with a new resolve to protect Madoka even at the cost of her shield. She asks her magic to lend her power once more and her magic power takes on the form of her soul gem.

Filled with power once more, Homura unleashes several hundred arrows that destroy the smaller wraiths and familiars before firing a single large arrow at the witch. As she drives the arrow further in, the witch cracks open and reveals the face of Kriemhild Gretchen and her shield inside. As Homura reaches for her shield, the witch uses its power to stab Homura through several times in an attempt to stop her. But Madoka appears before Homura and helps push her the last few inches towards the shield. As Homura touches the shield, it crumbles to pieces and the witch is obliterated. Back inside her soul gem, her magical power incarnate holds a sleeping Homura in her hands as she explains that Madoka has reset the timeline of this universe in order to prevent the curses of the previous world from interfering. Unlike last time however, Homura will lose her memories of the previous timeline.

Homura snaps to alertness as she realizes she is standing at the station with Mami and Kyoko, Sayaka having just been led away by the Law of Cycles. Some time later, Homura is having the same discussion with Kyubey concerning Madoka and the previous universe. As Homura drops down to destroy the wraiths in the streets below, Kyubey reveals a piece of Homura's shield it managed to salvage and explains how he kept his memories of the previous timeline. Now that he has a piece of the shield and proof of Homura's story concerning the Law of Cycles, he and the other Incubators can now plan for a way in which they can capture Madoka.

The chapter ends as Homura is walking in the desert, ready to take on a hoard of wraiths as several Incubators watch from atop some nearby ruins.

In Rebellion

"Without a doubt, this place is a witch's barrier."

In events prior to The Rebellion Story Homura was captured by the Incubators, and her Soul Gem was placed in an Isolation Field that blocked out the Law of Cycles. This strain led Homura to transform partially into a witch without her knowledge. In this form, she also unconsciously created a labyrinth that was a near-perfect replica of Mitakihara City, and unconsciously lured her former acquaintances into it. She even drew in Madoka from the Law of Cycles, who entered the barrier along with Sayaka and Nagisa Momoe. In this dream world, Homura unconsciously distorted almost everyone's memories (including her own) so that they believed they were living in the real world fighting new enemies called Nightmares. In order to stop the Incubators from fulfilling their goal, Madoka entrusted her memories and powers to Sayaka and Nagisa. Sayaka only pretended to have her memories altered, while Nagisa disguised herself as Charlotte/Bebe.

Eventually Homura realizes that she's trapped in a witch's barrier and attempts to discover who is behind it. Near the end of her journey she has a conversation with Madoka that causes her to realize that she can't accept Madoka's sacrifice. At this point she begins to realize she is the witch, and confirms it when she separates herself from her Soul Gem without consequence.

At this point Kyubey appears and explains the truth about Homura's present nature and the Incubators' plan to control the Law of Cycles. This causes Homura to go berserk and curse her existence, completing her transformation into a witch known as Homulilly. Madoka and the other magical girls manage to rescue Homura by destroying the stasis field containing them all, returning them to reality. Due to the Isolation Field, Homura only became a witch inside her own Soul Gem, allowing Madoka to save her.

Ultimate Madoka arrives to take Homura away as per the Law of the Cycle. However, Homura grabs Madoka first. Her Soul Gem turns black, then fills with swirling colors that Nagisa calls worse than curses. Reality begins to crack as Homura separates Madoka from her goddess self. The colors burst out of her Soul Gem, and both the cracks and colors engulf the entire universe.

Homura and Kyubey reappear in the same place where Madoka ascended in Episode 12. Homura shatters her Soul Gem in her mouth, and a new gem appears called the Dark Orb. Kyubey exclaims that Homura is rewriting the universe, and asks what happened to her Soul Gem. Homura explains that she remembered all of the times she repeated time, and all of the pain she suffered for Madoka's sake. She says that even this pain has become precious to her, tainting her Soul Gem with something greater than curses. As she swallows the Dark Orb, she calls it the pinnacle of human emotions: Love.

Homura transforms into a new form and grows a pair of black wings. Kyubey says that Homura is no longer a magical girl or a witch, and asks what Homura is now. Homura that since she brought down and imprisoned god, it's only appropriate to call her a demon (akuma). Kyubey decides that it was a mistake to experiment with human emotions and flees, but Homura grabs him and says she still needs his existence to deal with all the curses of the world.

In The Different Story

  • Homura acts just as she did in the anime.
  • Homura tries to cooperate with all magical girls to fight Walpurgisnacht. But she still fails because all other magical girls don't believe her.
    • When Sayaka becomes Oktavia, she warns Kyoko not to visit Mami or she may die. Kyoko refuses and set a barrier to stop her from following.
    • She brings unconscious Mami home, and then seeks her help.
    • She lies to Madoka, saying Sayaka is killed by witches. She doesn't want Madoka to know about the cold truth.
    • When Madoka contracts, she doesn't reset time immediately. She tries to convince Madoka to run away, but Madoka refuses. She resets time after the other two go to fight Walpurgis.

In the PSP Game

  • If certain conditions are met, the Homura route will be available for playing.
  • Homura can save Mami from Charlotte.
    • By telling Mami she will leave Charlotte to her, Homura can avoid being tied up in ribbons. Homura can then secretly follow and save Mami in time.
      • Mami apologizes to Homura for misjudging her and forms a bond with Homura.
      • With Mami alive, there is a scene where she fights against Kyoko.
  • Homura can save Sayaka, by choosing Kyoko to talk to Sayaka and prevent her from becoming a witch.
    • Sayaka will join the group in fighting against Walpurgis.
  • Kyouko will team up with Homura in most cases.
  • If Homura successfully avoids Mami's death and none of the magical girls become witches, then it is possible for Homura to challenge Walpurgis with four magical girls without having Madoka contracting with Kyubey.
  • The PSP game has a transformation scene for glasses Homura

In Oriko Magica

Homura in Oriko Magica

"Madoka... don't ever tell me not to save you. I'm not all-powerful. I am not able to save everyone. But... even so, I want to save you. So, don't say that anymore!"
— Homura, Oriko Magica Chapter 5.

Homura first appears in Chapter 3. When Mami warns her about the magical girl murders, Homura seems not to care, but warns Mami not to get close to her, Madoka, Hitomi and Sayaka.

In chapter 4, she appears for one page with her friends, going out for sweets. She defers to Madoka's taste and doesn't care where they go. She protected Madoka well to this point, keeping the knowledge of magical girls far away from her and Sayaka.

In chapters 5-7, as Mitakihara Junior High is covered with a Witch's barrier, Homura does her best to protect Madoka from the Familiars. After Madoka told her not to sacrifice others to protect her, Homura decided to find Oriko and Kirika and defeat them. Oriko reveals that she knows about the end of the world caused by Kriemhild Gretchen, Madoka's Witch form, and that she plans to kill Madoka before she can contract and cause that to happen. Homura fights together with Mami, Kyoko and Yuma, coming close to losing when two of the other three fall into despair after seeing Kirika become a Witch. They manage to pull themselves together and defeat her, and Homura kills Oriko. But since Oriko also killed Madoka by using the last of her power to shoot a piece of Kirika's witch body through Madoka's torso, Homura can do nothing but reset the timeline.

The Doppel of karma.
Its form is the mortal world.
The master of this emotion visits many worlds in search of an exit, spinning giant threads of fate. Fourteen incomplete bodies born from emotion trail behind the master's body, which has almost completely transformed into glass. In order to achieve their mission, these 14 bodies work methodically and tirelessly to remove obstacles. Regardless of their master's will, they weave the threads of fate, which become tangled in ever more complex patterns, driving her yet further into a maze, the exit of which can hardly be found. These bodies of emotion have no names.

Homura Akemi's Side Story

Homura looks on as Madoka Kaname makes her contract with Kyubey and becomes Ultimate Madoka. Homura then finds herself in an star-filled cosmos as the universe rewrites itself according to Madoka's new rules. Madoka thanks Homura for all she did trying to protect her and then bids Homura goodbye.

Homura and Kyubey watch as the universe rewrites itself. While Kyubey didn't ask to be there, it finds what's happening in front of them interesting. Homura watches as different colored glowing orbs appear then fade away. Kyubey doesn't know what they are when Homura asks him about it. She reaches out and touches one and finds herself viewing the first timeline she lived through, from when she first met Madoka at school all the way to when Madoka sacrificed herself to defeat Walpurgisnacht and Homura first formed her contract.

In the "present", Kyubey asks Homura what she saw. Homura explains how she relived memories of the first world and how everything began. Kyubey finds this interesting and wonders if Homura will relive another memory if she touches another orb. Homura reaches out and touches a different colored orb. Almost immediately she relives the day that Madoka transformed into Kriemhild Gretchen. Back in the "present", Homura and Kyubey come to the conclusion that each orb is an event that happened in a different parallel world. As each orb is absorbed by Ultimate Madoka and transformed into a new world without Witches, it disappears from their view. Soon, a rather large orb begins to float toward them and soon it engulfs the two.

Homura relives the time she revealed the truth about Witches to the rest of the Holy Quintet only for Sayaka and the others to turn against her when they didn't believe her, until Sayaka herself became a Witch. Homura continues to watch the old timeline as they fight and defeat Oktavia only for Mami to snap and kill Kyoko before turning her sights on Homura. Madoka kills Mami in order to protect Homura, leaving only the two of them to defeat Walpurgisnacht. With the two of them dying and on the verge of Witching out themselves, Madoka uses Sayaka's Grief Seed on Homura before asking her to go back in time and prevent her from ever contracting. Madoka also asks Homura to kill her before she transforms into a Witch.

As the memory ends, Kyubey asks if Homura viewed her memories of another timeline. Homura confirms this, and describes it as the defining moment in her life. After that, she took it upon herself to fulfill her promise to Madoka, but even after going back in time countless times, she was still too weak to defeat Walpurgisnacht by herself. She thinks back on the Magical Girls she couldn't save and what they meant to her: Mami, Sayaka, and Kyoko. Kyubey asks if she doesn't have any regrets about not being able to save them. As they watch, the colored orbs of those sad worlds fade away. Homura realizes that Madoka has changed the fate of those worlds so that Witches will not exist there anymore. Homura tells Kyubey that she has no regrets since their wishes will no longer end in regret thanks to Madoka's wish.

As the two continue to watch the universe rewrite itself, Kyubey notices that one of the orbs appears unstable and is coming toward them. Homura finds herself inside the Mirror Witch's labyrinth. As she looks around, she sees a giant soul gem that resembles her own approaching her. The soul gem begins to absorb her existence and Homura soon begins to relive the memories of a "self" that she doesn't remember: the Homura of the Magia Record universe. She watches the memories of a braided Homura talking to Madoka about Kamihama. In the memory, Mami approaches them and warns them of the dangers of Kamihama City. Homura's consciousness awakens back in the Mirror Witch's labyrinth and realizes that she doesn't remember Kamihama City at all despite these memories being her own. Her consciousness is currently trapped in the Mirror labyrinth as she continues to relive the memories of a Homura from a parallel world. In the memories, Mami explains there are Rumors and Uwasa in Kamihama that make it so dangerous. The braided Homura begs Mami to let her help investigate Kamihama, but Mami forbids her and Madoka from helping as they're not ready yet. After Madoka begs her once more, Mami relents and allows them to join her. The memories continue, as Homura and Madoka help Iroha against the Rumor of the Anonymous A.I. and battle with Alina. Homura watches the memories unfold as she ponders the truth behind Doppels and wonders if they are what her other self was investigating. She chides her past self for wanting to save Madoka by working with and helping other magical girls when she herself had been let down by others so many times. She believes that her other self should have been preparing for her inevitable fight against Walpurgisnacht rather than wasting time on anyone who isn't Madoka. Her other self is doing everything that the current Homura wouldn't do, including working with others as well as trying to find a way to keep Madoka from becoming a Witch since she had already contracted in this world.

Homura becomes aware that Kyubey has followed her into this realm, though not by his choice. He asks Homura what she saw, and when she describes it to him, he deduces that the two consciousnesses are resonating with each other. Even though the two Homuras are walking different paths, they're still the same person. Kyubey wonders when the two Homuras became different existences, and asks Homura to try to "remember" further back in time using the memories of the braided Homura to see when the two timelines began to diverge. Homura is able to recall when the braided Homura contracted, which is identical to her own memory. She then recalls the first time Madoka became a Witch and finds the two memories to be the same. When she recalls the following timeline when she woke up and realized Kyubey had tricked them, the braided Homura of this universe didn't tell the others because she didn't think they would believe her. Homura realizes that this is the point when the two of them diverged. Since the braided Homura never told the others the truth about where Witches came from, she never had to live through the experience of Mami killing Kyoko, or Madoka asking Homura to kill her after promising to prevent her from contracting. It was because of those tragic events that Homura decided to never rely on anyone else ever again. But her other self never experienced those tragic events, and so she had continued to search for a way to save Madoka by repeatedly traveling back in time until on one occasion she entered Kamihama City.

Homura continued to search through her other self's memories and found that in each timeloop she stayed in Mitakihara searching for a way to save Madoka. But then for some unknown reason, something different happened: within her frozen time, she was approached by an unknown magical girl who claimed that fates could be changed in Kamihama City. That is when she learned about Uwasa and fought the Wings of Magius. Kyubey doesn't remember anything like that in the Kamihama he remembers and is certain that Homura would have investigated Kamihama had anything unusual been happening in any of her timeloops considering it was an event that was too big to ignore. Too many strange phenomena have been occurring in the Kamihama of this timeline, but ONLY in this timeline. Kyubey asks if Homura noticed any differences in the different timelines she lived through, even if they were very tiny. Homura asks what the difference is. Kyubey believes that every time Homura went back in time, she caused tiny ripples in space and time which may have resulted in a butterfly effect. When Iroha accidentally kicked a pebble in this universe, it caused an untold number of effects that resulted in the irregular situation of Kamihama. In this world, it could cause a girl who would normally not contract to meet with Kyubey. Then those small changes would grow and expand into the large irregularity that is this timeline. All those little ripples and changes resulted in the creation of a parallel world that should never have existed. Because the orb was so unstable, Kyubey is certain that Madoka won't be able to interfere in this irregular world until it comes to its natural conclusion since it's a world that shouldn't have existed.

As Homura ponders this, she's flooded with more memories from her other self as she and the others gear up for their fight against Walpurgisnacht. The braided Homura had learned to accept help from everyone else to find a path to salvation. As she relives her memories, Homura wonders if maybe there is a real possibility for salvation in this timeline. One she couldn't see where no one has to be sacrificed in order to save Madoka. Even so, this Homura believes it has nothing to do with her. Homura breaks out of the labyrinth and the dream ends. Homura and Kyubey find themselves back in the empty cosmos where the universe is rewriting itself. Because Homura stopped the dream prematurely, her and Kyubey were not able to see the conclusion to that world. Kyubey asks if she wasn't curious about what happened to her other self. Homura believes it doesn't matter since she's going to believe in what Madoka said: that she would never let Homura's efforts be in vain. Either way, a new universe is about to be born and Homura must continue to protect this new universe for the sake of Madoka. As the universe finishes rewriting itself, Kyubey states they will both forget about Madoka Kaname but Homura is determined to never forget her.

As she finds herself in the new universe where Witches don't exist, Kyoko is surprised to find that Sayaka has disappeared. Mami explains that the Law of Cycles causes Magical Girls to disappear when they lose hope and turn to despair. Homura sheds some tears as she remembers Madoka, but neither Mami nor Kyoko know who Madoka is.

A timid Magical Girl who wished to protect Madoka. She turns back time repeatedly in an attempt to prevent Madoka from becoming a Witch. Now she searches for a new hope in Kamihama City.

The Doppel of closed circuits.
Its form is the mortal world.
The master of this emotion loops through time in an endless cycle of trial-and-error. Master and Doppel fuse together, her skin becomes glass, and her expression freezes into that of a doll. She launches volley after volley of attacks that only end when her target falls silent. In this way she is more like a Witch than other Magical Girls. Not only can she can manipulate the sands of time, but she can pluck information of low importance from the alien lifeforms on her hat and create anything around the level of an earthly weapon by solidifying the sand.

Side Story

Homura Akemi's (Glasses) Side Story

Homura and Madoka Kaname walk together in Kamihama City. Homura thinks she's taking a holiday with Madoka. Madoka notes Homura's spacing out, and wonders if she's alright. Homura says she's fine. Madoka says she likes doing something together with a friend, and is happy Homura feels the same way. Homura wishes this could continue forever, but notes Walpurgis Night is coming. After some time together, Homura and Madoka sense a witch. They find the barrier's entrance, but it suddenly disappears. It turns out it was destroyed by another magical girl who Madoka recognizes as a model. The magical girl introduces herself as Ria Ami, who is delighted to have a magical girl fan. She then gets embarrassed when Madoka keeps staring at her. She invites the girls to tea.

Homura says it was fine with just the two of them, but is happy to see Madoka is happy. The three enter a cafe, where Ria discusses modeling. Homura thinks that Ria is beautiful as if she was artificial. Ria gets flustered before Madoka says Homura meant she was like a doll. Later they go to the fashion district where Madoka looks at clothes. Ria says that one piece of clothing suits Madoka, but Madoka says it suits Homura better. Madoka then notices a piece Ria modeled in and said she looked cool. Ria then takes Homura back to talk. She asks if Homura is interested in her at all, and points out that Homura has spent the whole time looking at Madoka. Homura says she didn't meant to.

Ria laughs and says as a model she's sensitive to people's line of sight. Ria says that even though meeting a supermodel is an unusual sight, Homura only payed attention to Madoka. Ria admits she's jealous and wishes someone could look at her with the same eyes Homura has. Homura says she will protect Madoka. Ria tells Homura that she's a cool magical girl. When Madoka returns to the others, Ria says she has to leave. Homura and Madoka thank Ria, who tells them to keep getting along. Homura asks Madoka if she wants to look around more, which Madoka agrees. Homura thinks that even if she doesn't know she's cool, she will still save Madoka.

At a later date, Homura goes to Kamihama to steal weapons from the local criminal elements. She targets a group called the "Soukaihou", who allied with the police. However, she thinks they aren't different from the other groups and should have illegal weapons. Using her time stop power, she steals the weapons and runs off. However, after she resets time, she's caught by a magical girl. She introduces herself as Meiyui Chun, which she said is a name that makes delinquents runs away. Homura asks if she's part of a mob. Meiyu says she's part of the Soukaihou, which has only respectable members. She then thanks Homura for stealing the weapons, saying they belonged to people who brought nothing but trouble to her group.

Meiyui asks Homura why she steals weapons. Homura answers she lacks offensive magic. Meiyui says she wants to hear more about it so she invites Homura for mapo tofu. Homura finds the tofu spicy, but also tasty. Afterward, Meiyui tells Homura she has her support from one magical girl and hardworking child to another. Meiyui then asks Homura why she fights, causing Homura to flashback to her wish. She tells Meiyui there is someone she wants to protect. Meiyui says that she's the same and she contracted to save the people important to her. She thinks they must be alike, though she also thinks Homura has a heavier burden. She suggests Homura eat mapo tofu if it gets too painful, as it would blow the pain away. (There is apparently a Japanese pun between painful and spicy). Homura thanks Meiyui and the two depart. Homura thinks that perhaps she is not fighting alone.

Sometime later, Homura uses her timestop to practice shooting. However, she fails to hit all her targets. Homura wants to be as good as Mami Tomoe. Suddenly another girl appears. She introduces herself as Natsuki Utsuho and asks if Homura is practicing shooting training. She claims she's a magical girl who cheers everyone, and explains she was just passing through and saw Homura. Natsuki offers to cheer Homura on as she practices. A confused Homura initially thinks she's being distracting, but then is surprised to find herself getting motivated.

Despite this new motivation, Homura is still missing her targets. Natsuki notes she's improved, and deduces that Homura can stop time. She calls Homura cool and gives her some advice on how to shoot. She explains Homura's issues are similar to the baseball team she usually cheers. Thanks to Natsuki's advice, Homura improves significantly. Homura and Natsuki practice for awhile. Afterward, Homura admits her practicing can't be done alone. Natsuki tells Homura to rest and offers to give her drinks. She then asks if Homura ever trains with her partners.

Homura explains that this is her own problem. Natsuki says that Homura's troubles are also the troubles of her supporters. Homura explains about Mami and how she uses guns as weapons. However, as Mami is a veteran, Homura feels there is a large gap between their abilities. She thinks if she asks for special training Mami might react poorly. Natsuki says if Mami is Homura's partner, then she wouldn't feel bad about Homura working hard. Homura admits she isn't. Natsuki then suggests she call Mami now and ask her to be her coach.

Homura calls Mami and is surprised to find that she'll come there right away. An hour later, Mami arrives and tells Homura she's always willing to help. Natsuki says Homura wasn't alone today and introduces herself. Mami introduces herself as well. When she learns of Homura's progress, Mami challenges Homura to a fight. By attaching ribbons to Homura, Mami is able to move around in Homura's time stop. As Homura fights, Mami gives her advice. After the battle Natsuki, who wasn't in time stops, wonders if it finished. Mami tells Homura she improved in a short time, and will gladly lend her own strength in the future.

Natsuki says Homura was praised by the coach. While Homura says she's still far from her goal, Mami says she's strong enough already. She asks Homura to return to Mitakihara with her. Homura agrees, and says goodbye to Natsuki. Homura then narrates that she has changed. She will become a magical girl that can protect Madoka. For that reason, she will keep moving forward.

Costume Stories

Homura Akemi's (Glasses) Costume Stories

Homura and Madoka have gone to the Mizuna Shrine to buy fortunes. While Madoka is shopping, Homura sees a booth selling hair pins. Homura finds a pair of hair pins she likes, and imagines giving them to Madoka. Homura then finds that while she was daydreaming, the hairpins were sold off! After reuniting with Madoka, Homura narrates that they bought matching hair pins later and wishes to have a good year.

Homura narrates she's going shopping with Madoka and Sayaka, and thinks she took a chance by wearing new clothes. Homura worries that she should have worn her old clothes, but when Madoka and Sayaka see it they say Homura looks great. Sayaka and Madoka then look at Homura for a second. When Homura thinks her clothes do look weird after all, Sayaka and Madoka exclaim they want to fluff her clothes. A shocked Homura accepts.

During an exam for Homura's class, time runs out and Professor Saotome collects all the students' exams. Homura is happy because she can rest since the next day is the weekend. Homura wants to ask Madoka out together, but upon hearing how one of her classmates complains to another classmate for inviting her out but not having plans of where to go. Homura thinks it's true, but can't think of where to take Madoka. At that moment Homura senses the presence of a witch, Madoka communicates with her and tells her to go defeat her, while Homura laments that she does not have time because of the witches. At night in her house, Homura prepares to sleep. She is happy to have defeated the witch but she regrets not having invited Madoka to spend the day together. Homura thinks that she would have liked to talk to her like at a sleepover, and then remembers how at Mami's sleepover, Madoka and Sayaka talked about an animal movie that Madoka wanted to go to. Homura looks for the movie, but she realizes that unfortunately the last showings were the day before the exam. Homura thinks about other places Madoka wanted to go: she remembers how she gave Mami a souvenir from the aquarium where she saw a dolphin show. Homura investigates the aquarium's page but sees that they are closed for renovations and she regrets this fact again.

Just then it starts to rain and Homura thinks it's a bad timing weather. She investigates and sees that it will rain all the next day, so she won't be able to go out with Madoka the next day. Homura thinks it's a sign that she should give up, but just then she gets a call from Madoka. Homura responds and Madoka invites her out the next day because her exams are over, but she complains about her because she has no plans and it will rain all day tomorrow. Homura says that no matter the weather, she will definitely go with Madoka somewhere, and Madoka laughs that she is being dramatic and asks to meet her at the train station. Homura hangs up and thinks she made it, thinking that she hopes she can be more honest like Madoka to invite her to spend time together.

Homura Akemi, who transformed into a different personality by having memories from a different time axis. Wandering through a mysterious first dream set in Kamihama City, she and Madoka search for a way out of the dream. While she was puzzled by the drastic change in the situation, she will never give up on her desire to save Madoka.

Doppel Description

HOMULILLY (Homulilly)

The Doppel of karma.
Its form is a treasure ship.
The master of this emotion thinks of the lost splendor she left behind during the old year. The seven bodies carried by the treasure ship are the remnants of the emotions the master tried to detach at the start of the New Year, but their expressions are painted over by the regret she harbors, making it impossible to read the original emotions. This doppel crushes the enemy when the master cannot bear the weight of her regrets and throws out the entire treasure ship. The more dazzling the first sunrise is, the heavier the master's regrets become, so the seven of them wear glasses so as not to be blinded by the dawn light of the New Year.

業因のドッペル。

Homura Akemi's (Kimono) Costume Stories

While lost in a strange dream, Homura and Madoka decided to get a change of clothes that would make it easier to walk around in. As they walk towards the mall in Sakae Ward, they are accompanied by Ashley, Riko, Rika and Emiri, who invite two more girls to help with fashion advice, Ren and Hinano. Rika requests the latter two girls to also keep everyone but Riko getting too excited while inside the mall, much to Hinano’s annoyance. Inside the mall, while Madoka admires all the New Years sales, Riko asks of who should get their new outfit picked out first. Madoka says that she doesn’t mind waiting, so Homura gets to go first. She doesn’t have anything particular in mind, so the girls drag her through the various stores. Hinano and Rika briefly bicker over getting a lucky surprise bag, while Ashley shows off a hoodie that has a variant of Kumanosuke, called “Gurokawa-Sensei”, which succeeds in unnerving Madoka and Homura before they continue their search. Madoka sees an outfit that she likes, but the price is 90% of her Magica coins, this dream world’s currency, and she still wanted to get shoes and a scarf, before directing the main focus back to Homura. Once they looked everywhere, Homura is indecisive due to everyone’s different recommendations, and asks Madoka for her suggestions she may have. Soon enough, Homura has an outfit picked out, and just now needs to choose between two jackets. The first one is described as more cutesy, while the other has a more mature look, though it is also more expensive. If she got the more expensive one, she would be spending her entire budget of 100,000 Magica coins. Homura picks the cheaper jacket, and gives the remaining 10,000 to Madoka so she could get those shoes and scarf she wanted. Once the two are both in their new outfits, they bid goodbye to the rest of the girls. When they have left, Hinano wonders if Homura chose the cheaper jacket in order to save Madoka’s budget, to which Rika agrees with her.

Doppel Description

HOMULILLY (Homulilly)

The Doppel of closed circuits.
Its form is the near shore.
The master of this emotion wound up on the beach during her trips of trial and error through time. She's got a holiday vibe, maybe due to the summer sun. By absorbing strange skills from the alien she has trapped on her straw hat, she conjures a palm tree that fires rounds of coconuts. No Witch would enjoy being pelted with supersonic coconuts, and the Doppel's attacks are guaranteed to hit due to the game mechanics, so they forfeit the moment it aims. The palm tree boasts high accuracy and it can target and hit a lone enemy repeatedly. Consider it an improvement.

From the umbrella that stood at the entrance, the trickle of water drops indicate the recent rain From outside the petrichor together with the night's fragrant smell wafts under one's nose, the twinkle of the evening sun comes together into view, everything is dyed white so that the boundary between reality and the unreal becomes blurred.
玄関に立てた傘からは、さっきまでの雨を物語る水滴がしたたる

外からはペトリコールと共に夜香花の匂いが鼻先をかすめる 夕日の煌めきが視界に入り込み、すべてを白く染める

Homura Akemi's (Swimsuit) Side Story

The following is a summary posted on 4chan's /pmmm/ general by Summary Anon.

Homura visits Kamihama to find clues to ensure everyone has a happy end. She meets Sayaka who is also visiting but it's because she wants to pick up an old album for Kyosuke. Seeing Homura being a little down, Sayaka takes Homura to the beach to take part in the Kamihama PM fishing festival. Reaching the registration counter, Sayaka offers to buy drinks for Homura and goes off.

Mitama announces that all participants must be in swimwear, but she can help by transforming the PM wear to swimwear for free. Momoko tells Homura to say no if she does not want to participate, but Homura is very excited about the event, making Mitama feeling a little guilty.

On the other side, Sayaka meets Kanoko who sees Sayaka as the perfect model for her new swimwear. Sayaka didn't want anything to do with it at first, but Kanoko's pleading, hugging of her leg made her relent. The swim wear is like a mascot costume, a mix of mermaid and eryngii mushroom which shocks Sayaka speechless, but she is pressured into wearing it anyway. She muses that sending a picture to Kyousuke in this just to see his reaction is worth it.

Back to Homura, she has changed into her swimwear and meets Iroha and Sana. Iroha informs her that the whole Nanami-ke is joining the fishing competition, and Homura muses there are a lot of participants.

The list includes:

  • Seika trio where Seika claims she has trained by watching hot-blooded fishing dramas. She also revealed that her magia doesn't really summon fishes.
  • Miyako and Emiri, though Miyako tells her junior using dynamite to fish is against the law when she suggests she use her chemicals.
  • Rena and Kaede, where Rena has no idea how to hook the bait and has Kaede do it for her.
  • Meiyu, though she tells Emiri that using her magia to fish is out of the question.
  • Himika is there to sell Nereis as bait.
  • Konoha and her sisters. It is reveled that Hazuki has a huge dislike for worms and Konoha gets knocked out cold for looking at the wriggling movement of the Nereis bait they bought for Ayame for too long.
  • Manaka representing Walnuts and Tsuruno with Felicia representing Banbanzai are hired for catering.
  • Kokoro, Masara and Konomi are also participants.

On the other side of the field, Homura brought food for Sayaka who is stuck in the costume. She says it comes with a built-in fan, so it is not too bad, and Homura reveals that she took both food from Walnuts and Banbanzai since she pities the latter who have very few patrons. When asked about the taste, Homura says the Banbanzai food has too huge a portion, the taste is too strong and too much old is used: bad for an ex-hospital stayer. Sayaka offers to share the food, and they do.

After eating, Sayaka falls asleep and dreams that Kyousuke is heading to Czech to study violin. As she is chasing after him, she sees Homura consoling her to let Kyousuke go and live her own life. Before she can retort angrily, she gets shocked speechless since Homura is wearing the same suit as she is, claiming that it can shorten time and asks Sayaka to join her for the Olympics. Kanoko joins in with the suit and Sayaka wakes up screaming, realizing that everything is just a dream. Heading to the shore, she finds Homura fishing for her glasses. Homura informs her that many things happened which led to her glasses falling into the sea. She is strongly against Sayaka's suggestion to get help and insists on fishing her glasses up and succeeds.

Back to Mitama, it is revealed that nobody managed to fish anything, in which Masara notes that's obvious since 3~4 PMs fell into the sea, scaring away the fishes. Leila and co. mentions that it is lucky they are PMs since what happened would land regular people in a hospital, and it is revealed that Konomi is one of those girls that fell into the sea, but she is alright. Sayaka wonders what the hell could have happened when she was out.

Mitama decides that Homura wins the qualifying rounds since she at least managed to fish her glasses up, and pits her against the ex-champion, Yachiyo. The girls note that Yachiyo is a little high, and Mitama sheepishly revealed that Yachiyo was unwilling to take part in the second tournament, so she hypnotized her in the name of trying out a new trick to consul PMs when they know of the truth of PMs to prevent them from turning to witches, and it works too well: Yachiyo is high in the competition.

Being too high, Yachiyo mistook Sayaka in her suit as bait and threw her into the sea. Kanoko exclaims that the suit is not water-proof since her pocket money is not enough to buy such materials, at which Momoko slaps her head at the idea of swimwear that is not water proof.

Sayaka suffers from electric shocks since there is a fan inside the suit. Masara acts first, wanting to dive in to help Sayaka, but Kokoro informs her that's a bad idea since she will get electrocuted as well. Before anyone can do anything, Sayaka's doppel springs into action and saves her life. As the doppel is a mermaid, it went wild in the sea, dragging Yachiyo into the sea as well. But she regains her posture pretty quickly and began water skiing using her fishing rod and legs while Sayaka's doppel pulls her around.

Homura manages to fish the doppel up after using some time when she connects her heart to it and wins the huge trophy from Mitama and is praised by the others though they think the trophy is too huge.

Returning back home, Sayaka thanks Homura for helping her and tell her she is depending on her to watch her back, and she can depend on Sayaka to watch her back too. Homura happily says she will help her no matter what and no matter when, ending everything on a good note.

Doppel Story

Homura Akemi's (Swimsuit) Doppel Story

There’s a scene afterward, with the doppel mocking Homura for having fun. Homura does a better job than the previous event in confronting it, but still can’t overcome it. The doppel blames her not only for Madoka’s death, but all the deaths that have occurred (including Kuro) and preemptively blames herself for all the deaths that will occur. That is the thing that Homura as she is can’t overcome because she’s self-loathing enough to believe it. Just another Homura insulting and scolding Homura for enjoying summer and being reliant on Madoka's kindness. She says Homura will never be able to help anyone like this, and says her weakness caused the death of Kuro, and it mocks her for enjoying her life despite Kuro's death.

Homura retorts that moving forward is not the same as dwelling on the past and wallowing in self pity. She claims that just protecting Madoka's life is not enough: she has to protect her happiness and the rest of her friends as well, and tells her inner self that she will not disappear.

A Magical Girl who is trying to change the future in the midst of repeating time. After suffering from heart problems for a long time, she was discharged from the hospital and transferred to Mitakihara Middle School as a second-year student. She was once timid, but has since changed her temperament in order to save a certain girl.

  • At a Nitro+ Q&A Panel it was revealed that Homura went through almost 100 timelines. Q: How many timelines did Homura go through? A: Approaching 100.
    • If Homura really did loop the same month and a half nearly 100 times, she would technically be around 26-years old, having spent 12 years looping time. (Calculations here.) However, since her body is always reset along with time, she is still only 14-years old physically. In some interpretations, this would make Homura about twelve years older mentally than Madoka.
      • Since Homura's body stayed the same physical age throughout the loops, this implies that her brain does as well, and as such she would not have had the intervening 12 years of neurological development, and instead only an amount of extra memories from the loops that adds up to 12 years and the accompanying trauma.
  • Homura finds a manual on how to make bombs from the internet. According to the Japanese Wikipedia, the manual is titled Hara Hara Tokei (腹腹時計 Hara Hara Tokei), published in March 1974 by a far-left terrorist organization.
    • Incidentally, the manual explains with illustrations that “Anyone with a middle-school level knowledge of chemistry can do it”.
  • Homura is frequently referred to as "Homerun-chan" amongst Western fans, due to the similarity of the two names in Japanese, however she is frequently referred as "Homuhomu" (ほむほむ) within Japanese community. Homuhomu likely originated from the runes in Episode 3, one of which translates to "Homuhomu". Interestingly, when a homerun is enacted in sports, you (in addition to gaining a point/level) essentially get back where you started.
    • "Homuhomu" can be used as a verb as "do Homuhomu" (ほむほむする) which means to caress, console or take care of. The action of "do Homuhomu" is not defined exactly.
    • Originally started by the fan community it has been embraced and adopted by the industry to become part of the official language and usage.
    • Sometimes also jokingly refered to as "Homurika" due to shared similarity of circumstances (having to go through many timelines to prevent a tragedy) with Rika Furude (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni) Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni spoilers.
  • Some folks in 2ch nicknamed Homura's Residence Homu-home (ほむホーム Homuhōmu) since Homu is a nickname for Homura, and Hōmu is "home" rendered in the Japanese syllabary. It should be noted that "homu" is more often used for dog houses and similar structures, with the English word "home" expressed using "uchi" (うち, which refers to one's own house or household), "ie" (いえ, which can refer to a physical house or a family lineage), or the honorific "otaku" (お宅, which refers to someone else's house or household).
  • Apparently there is a rumor on the net that some weapons went "missing" at the JSDF and US military bases in Japan. There is only one official report regarding the missing/stolen weapons. It is not known if the rumors of the stolen missing weapons inspired their appearance in the series.
  • In the Puella Magi Madoka Magica Official Guidebook "You Are Not Alone" Hanokage jokingly describes Homura as "Hommando" in her After-Recording Report comic, because of the excessive vast arsenal of weaponry she unleashes in Episode 11. Apparently the smörgåsbord of weaponry was added later, they were not originally depicted in the early stages of the screenplay.
    • One fan estimates that Homura used ¥ 1,383,040,300 Yen worth of military weaponry & equipment (that's $17,037,114 USD in today's dollars).[1]
  • Homura is the strongest of the magical girls as long as no one discovers the nature of her power.
  • In Audio commentary for Episode 4, Urobuchi liked Chiwa Saitou for the role because she had a "Dark Beauty" feeling.
    • In the Audio commentary for Episode 7, Chiwa Saitou explains she tried the role of Kyubey and Kyousuke first, until Gen Urobuchi convinced her to try the role of Homura.
    • Chiwa Saito explains that she found the character of Homura to be strong but also to be a weak/delicate girl. Aoi Yuuki adds that the Homura character had no other choice but to become strong.
      • Ryouko Shintani states that would be true for a character that has something or someone important to protect.
  • In Magia Record:
    • Homura was originally released as a pre-registration bonus. She is also purchasable in the in-game shop for in-game currency. She cannot be rolled in the gacha, but may be given out in certain events.
    • On the other hand, the version of Homura without glasses was event limited and could only be obtained in the gacha.
      • The fourteen Eyeglasses Homura-like shadows in her Doppel could either be a reference to Clara Dolls, or the fact that Homura constantly travels back in time just to save Madoka.
    • She was also the only natural ★4 characters to not have a ★5 unlock until July 6, 2018.
    • Homura's Doppel is based off of Homulilly's concept art from Madoka Portable.
    • Homura is the only of the six Madoka Magica girls who has only one swimsuit. All others have one swimsuit unit and one swimsuit costume.
    • The needle in Kimono Homulilly's hat has been replaced by a shishi-odoshi, a device made to scare away animals that pose a threat to agriculture. In this sense, it can be seen as an attempt to scare away Incubators that threaten humanity.
      • The water is being poured into the bamboo by a sake flask.
    • The duck or swan-shaped boat (treasure ship) Kimono Homulilly summons loosely resembles the horse-shaped boat seen in her labyrinth in Rebellion.
    • The pole in the boat resembles Ultimate Madoka's symbol.
      • The pole bears the word for 'treasure' on it.
    • Kimono Homulilly's Familiars resemble the Seven Lucky Gods. From left to right, they are:
      • Far left: Ebisu, the fisherman.
      • Left: Daikokuten, who wields a mallet.
      • Middle left: Bishamonten, who wields a trident.
      • Middle: Hotei, who wields a fan and a sack.
      • Right: Benzaiten, who carries a biwa (Japanese lute).
      • The Familiar in green (middle right, between Hotei and Benzaiten) and in purple at the far right are uncertain. Both Jurojin and Fukurokuju are old men with abnormally long heads, both are depicted as having sacred scrolls tied to their staff (as the purple Familiar does), and both are associated with the deer (behind the green one) and the crane (behind the purple one). Both are frequently confused with each other due to their similarities, and are sometimes depicted as either family or inhabiting the same body.
    • In her Kimono unit, Homura appears to lack her Soul Gem anywhere in her design when transformed. It's unknown whether this is an animation error or not.
    • The illustrator for her Swimsuit unit is Imoan.
    • The film from Homura and Madoka's Scene 0 4 star Cards mirror each other.
  • In Magia Exedra:
    • Her 5✦ Kioku Dark Art Dominion, aka her Waith Arc/Ribbon Form is the first Kioku that hasn't also appeared as a playable character in Magia Record.
    • She is the third character to have a special 'crystal door' animation following Madoka, the first being Dark Art Domination.
      • Both Dark Art Domination and Falsified Phenomena were referencing each scenes from TV series and Rebellion film. For Dark Art Domination, it's referencing Madoka gifting her red ribbons to Homura before their final farewell, and Falsified Phenomena references the final climax scene of Rebellion.

Etymology

  • Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean:
    • flame, blaze (炎 or 焔)
    • heart on fire (心火)
  • Though only 焔, 炎, and 心火 are actually Japanese given names.
  • The official Chinese translation uses (焔) "flame, blaze" as the characters for her first name. However, no official kanji of her name exists in the original Japanese version. Madoka says at one point to Homura that she should act badass to match it and Sayaka even uses a firehose on her in a timeline. In Rebellion, there are many scenes of fire and parallels are made between her and the name of Lucifer, since both are references to fire. It can also refer to how assumed witches were burned at the stake.
  • The first character for Akemi (暁) means "daybreak", while the second one (美) means beauty which is a common letter in girl's names.
    • In an early production sketch, her surname was given as (暁海) "daybreak sea" instead of (暁美). Both are read as Akemi.
    • Her last name can also be used as a first name.
  • When her full name is written vertically in hiragana (あけみほむら) and covering the left half at a certain angle, it could be read as カナメまどか which is Kaname written in katakana and Madoka written in hiragana.
