Kyoko Sakura (佐倉 杏子 Sakura Kyōko) is one of the main characters from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Kyoko is a veteran Magical Girl who comes to Mitakihara City after Mami's death, planning to take over the territory.[6] She meets Sayaka Miki, a rookie Magical Girl who claimed the city before her, and they start a rivalry.[4] When she progressively finds out the dark truths about Magical Girls, she gets closer to Sayaka.[7]

Personality and Traits
"Ever hear of something called the food chain? Didn’t they teach you it in school? The Witches go and eat weak humans, and then we hunt them down and eat the Witches. It’s the natural way of things."

Kyoko first appeared as a Magical Girl who came from another town to take over Mami's turf after hearing of her death.[6] She was initially introduced as a callous, arrogant Magical Girl who simply has supernatural powers and had abandoned the premise of justice and benevolence.[4] In short, she didn't hesitate in any sense in using her magic powers for her own selfish benefit and did not mind sacrificing humans to Familiars if it meant obtaining a Grief Seed.[4]
Kyoko was the elder daughter of a preacher.[7] Her father started to deviate from regular doctrine and was excommunicated for it - Kyoko used her wish to get her father more followers; however, upon finding this out, her father went insane and killed the entire family except Kyoko, then committed suicide by hanging himself from the church ceiling.[7] After her family's death, Kyoko was introduced to the principles of "Dog eat dog world", "you get what you pay for" and "Kill or be killed/Eat or be eaten" and started to live by them.[7] She uses her magic and other abilities mainly for herself due to the belief that helping somebody else will only result in something bad.[8]
Kyoko seems abrasive and selfish but has a somewhat soft side as well.[7] She values food a lot and chastises those who waste it.[4] After her father lost supporters, Kyoko and her family nearly starved.[7] She may have experienced trauma from her family's death giving her an eating disorder of sorts, or erasing the memory of hunger. She is rather tomboyish, with barely any femininity at all if any. This is where she differs from Sayaka's boyishness: whereas Sayaka has a bit of a girlish streak due to the fact that she is interested in romance, Kyoko only demonstrates a nice side, and likes stories with happy endings. Rebellion shows that under normal circumstances, Kyoko has the typical attitude of a lazy, slackerish schoolgirl, and loses many of the abrasive points of her personality.[9]
She seems to be very faithful in God, as she prays to God to show her a "happy dream" during her final moments in the fight against Oktavia.[10] It's uncertain what exactly this means, but presumably she is pleading to be shown something happy like her family all being alive and happy, in the form of a dream, or to allow her to die peacefully and ascend to Heaven.
Powers and Abilities
Kyoko is seen to be quite the skilled fighter due to being a Magical Girl veteran similar to Mami.[4] Her spear has been seen not only to cause devastating injuries but to split apart into a chain-like state in which she can use to wrap up foes and throw them around.[4] She can also use this form of her spear to gather up enemies and attack several at once.[11] These spears have been seen to also be able to be summoned out of the ground to create walls to keep enemies away from others or to simply pike enemies.[Citation needed] Her Magia from Magia Record involves her riding one of these giant spears into an enemy to cause an explosion.[12] Though in the original anime, it is shown that by sacrificing her soul gem, she can cause an explosion similar to the effectiveness of a missile by breaking it with her spear.[10]
Her main magical ability is that of illusion as a result of her wish.[3] With this she would have been able to make people believe what she wanted them to.[3] She was even able to use the ability to create copies of herself to fool the enemy in combat[3] and this ability seems to carry over to her Witch form, Ophelia.[13] Her special attack involving these copies was called Rosso Fantasma (Red Phantom) where she and they would all pierce the enemy with several strikes at once.[3] Yet, due to personal reasons she has seemingly lost this ability as she does not use it in the anime and other timelines that take place.[3]
She has also been seen to be able to create walls out of red diamonds which are formed much like a lattice.[4] These can serve as a form of protection for herself or her allies as she has been shown to form barriers from them, these barriers were durable enough to deflect some of Oktavia's wheels.[10] She can also keep people out of areas or trap them with these barriers if she wishes.[4] These lattice barriers are also able to have weapons affixed to the end of them and can be used as a way to direct the weapons onto a target.[9]
In the Magia Record universe, when her Soul Gem turns black Kyoko is able to summon her Doppel, Ophelia.[12] Ophelia has shown to be able to grant Kyoko increased agility as she rides upon it but also the ability to cause a devastating explosion of fire with an enlarged spear that the Doppel summons for Kyoko.[12] Kyoko herself can also tie up or trap her enemies using the binding tools that Ophelia summons to keep them from moving.[12]
History

- In episode 6 when she approaches Sayaka as she is about to visit Kyosuke, Kyoko scoffs at Sayaka's wish. She states that if she wanted him that badly, she should just go in and break his hands and legs, leaving him crippled and so that he would have to rely entirely on Sayaka so they could be together forever.
- Kyoko, in an effort to restore Sayaka to normal after she became a witch, takes Madoka to Oktavia's lair. After taking many hits defending herself and watching Madoka's attempts to reach her prove futile, Kyoko "sacrifices" herself to stop Oktavia and save Madoka. This also allowed Homura, who had just arrived, to rescue Madoka and leave the witch's lair with her.
- In a previous timeline, Kyoko is killed by a mentally broken Mami after the fight with Oktavia. Having gone mad after learning what happens to magical girls with time, Mami shot and destroyed Kyoko's Soul Gem, killing her in what she saw as a mercy kill that would save Kyoko from becoming a witch.
- Kyoko is brought back to life by Madoka's wish in Episode 12
In Wraith Arc
Kyoko makes her first appearance in chapter 1 alongside Mami as they hunt down Wraiths in the city, with Kyoko complaining about letting a large 'trophy' Wraith get away from them earlier. After Sayaka encounters and is unsuccessful in capturing the giant Wraith, Kyoko taunts and teases her until the two girls end up in a small scuffle, in which Kyoko is victorious. After a few more battles in the following days, Kyoko is seen coming to Sayaka's rescue against several Wraiths. Sayaka has been distracted lately and it's effecting them in battle. Afterwards, Kyoko is angry with Sayaka's airheadedness and tells Mami to use up the Grief Cubes on herself after Sayaka initially declines them. After Mami leaves, Kyoko ascertains correctly that Sayaka's lack of focus is due to Hitomi and the boy she likes, Kyosuke. She tells Sayaka that the solution to her problems is to allow a Wraith to eat Hitomi's feelings, which causes Sayaka is retaliate in anger calling Kyoko the worst kind of Magical Girl there is. Sayaka challenges Kyoko to a rematch. Despite Kyoko gaining the upper hand at first, she notices the dark state of Sayaka's Soul Gem which causes her to be caught off-guard by Sayaka's next attack and leaving Sayaka the victor of the battle. Sayaka leaves, but not before telling Kyoko to never talk to her again.
Some time later, Mami and Kyoko await at the station at the appointed time. Sayaka is late and as they wait, Mami asks Kyoko about the state of Sayaka's Soul Gem. Kyoko is surprised that Mami is aware of the second battle they had and Mami lectures Kyoko on being a bully. They discuss the state of Sayaka with Mami expressing concern over how quickly her Soul Gem became polluted. She tosses some Grief Cubes at Kyoko and tells her to give them to Sayaka and to apologize to her. As soon as Kyoko leaves, Mami is ambush by a number of Wraiths. Kyoko finds Sayaka surrounded by a number of Wraiths who are about to consume her emotions. Kyoko dispatches them with her spear and grabs Sayaka, taking her to safety. At the top of a watercooler, Sayaka dismisses Kyoko and reminds her she was told never to speak to Sayaka again. Before Kyoko can work up the nerve to offer her the Grief Cubes, Kyubey tells the girls about Mami's predicament. As the fight against the Wraiths escalates, Kyoko and Sayaka appear at Mami's side to help her. Mami comes up with a plan where her and Kyoko distract the Wraiths while Sayaka closes in on the giant Wraith. But the plan fails and Sayaka is captured by the Wraiths instead. Mami and Kyoko yell encouraging words to Sayaka who manages to escape, but not before using up her magic and being led away by the Law of Cycles.
The following day, Mami and Kyoko meet up with Homura on the school's roof, Kyoko having borrowed a school uniform to better blend in. They tell Homura about the giant Wraith that has been seen lately and agree not to hunt it on their own. After several days of combing the city for the giant Wraith and hunting down other more common Wraiths, Homura encounters the giant Wraith alone and attempts to defeat it herself. Mami and Kyoko run into the aftermath of the fight where they find Homura lying unconscious on the streets.
The next night, Kyoko runs into Homura while patrolling the streets. She assures Homura she won't tell Mami she saw her up and about knowing Mami would only lecture her further. When asked why she remains in the city despite Sayaka having disappeared, Kyoko responds she is still here to avenge Sayaka. Kyoko agrees to help Homura in finding and defeating the Wraith provided she is the one to give the final blow. The next night, Mami meets with Kyoko at the station and asks her what she would do were she to meet with her dead family again. Kyoko has no answer for her and Mami leaves. Hitomi overhears their conversation and asks Kyoko about the truth concerning Sayaka's disappearance. Kyoko tells her as much as she can, saying Sayaka smiled during her final moments. Hitomi tells Kyoko about the promise she made to Sayaka concerning Kyosuke and how it may have caused Sayaka to despair. As they finish their conversation, Sayaka appears sitting on the light pole next to them. Hitomi apologizes to Sayaka, but Sayaka tells her she must make a choice between her and Kyosuke. Kyoko steps in once she sees how hurt Hitomi is only for Sayaka to nearly hit her with her attack. Sayaka then turns into a Wraith and escapes. Kyoko chases after the Wraith only to come across Mami and Homura in the park after their own encounter with a Mutant Wraith. She informs them of the fake Sayaka and they agree on rules in order to limit their ability to be taken by surprise by the Mutant Wraiths.
After several weeks of searching for the giant Wraith, the girls decide to begin their search from the beginning. Mami is upset to find that Homura had been searching for the giant Wraith alone and worries that something may happen to her. Homura snaps at both Mami and Kyoko before taking off. Later, Mami and Kyoko run into Homura who has been searching alongside a Mutant Wraith in the form of Madoka. However, to Mami and Kyoko she looks nothing like Madoka and only has the form of a Mutant Wraith wrapped around Homura. They transform and prepare to rescue Homura, but Homura instead begs the Wraith to save her from being a Magical Girl. The Wraith takes Homura's Soul Gem and teleports them from the area, leaving Mami and Kyoko behind.
Some time later, Mami and Kyoko sit in the park at night as they discuss Homura's recent disappearance and lack of clues leading to the giant Wraith. Kyoko comes up with the idea of reminding Homura what her wish was in order to bring her back to normal. As they talk, a parade of Wraiths swarm around them, however the Wraiths take no notice of the two girls. Mami and Kyoko transform and follow after the Wraiths, coming across a city full of dead people. They're suddenly ambushed by Wraith-Sayaka. Kyoko stays behind to fight her off and allow Mami to continue chasing after the other wraiths. As Kyoko battles against Wraith-Sayaka, fending her off as best she can, other Wraiths with similar time-stopping abilities join in the fray and Kyoko is soon overwhelmed. She uses the last of her magical energy to summon hundreds of spears that impale the wraiths, freeing Kyoko from their grasp.
By this time the giant Wraith has been consumed by the power it took from Homura and transforms into a Witch-like creature, Kriemhild Fausut, complete with Familiars. As the Familiars began to overrun the city, one of the Witch's large braids swings at Mami, nearly killing her. However Kyoko has appeared just in time to pull Mami out of danger. Mami introduces to Kyoko the Wraith-Madoka and Kyoko hands to Mami the last Grief Cubes she has. Before Mami can finish using them, a braid has trapped Kyoko. Wraith-Madoka frees her with an arrow but it is too late: the Witch has taken away her soul completely the moment it touched her.
At the end of the story, after Madoka has reset this universe's timeline so the curses of the previous world don't interfere, Kyoko is shown alive and well with no memories of the previous timeline.
In Rebellion
Prior to the events of the movie, the Incubators trapped Homura's Soul Gem in an Isolation Field that blocks the Law of Cycles. Homura creates a Witch barrier inside her own Soul Gem, which is an idealized version of Mitakihara. Along with Mami and other characters, Kyoko is taken into the barrier and has her memories altered.
Within the barrier, Kyoko is now a student at Mitakihara Middle School and fights with the other Magical girls against Nightmares, monsters created by the barrier specifically to provide an enemy for the Magical Girls to fight. She is shown to be much closer to Sayaka; in fact Kyoko is staying at Sayaka's house.
Homura suspects something is off and invites Kyoko to a treetop cafe to discuss things. While Kyoko sees nothing wrong initially, Homura feels Kyoko is the one that is most different from the impression she has of her. She asks her when Kyoko first transferred to Mitakihara from Kazamino City and how long it's been, however due to the memory alterations Kyoko can't remember. Homura asks Kyoko to accompany her on a trip to Kazamino, and Kyoko agrees so long as Homura buys her ramen once they get there. The two girls board a bus headed towards Kazamino, only to end up back at the same bus station in Mitakihara. They board the bus again only for the same to happen. They soon come to the realization that they can't leave the city as the townspeople stop to stare at them. Homura urges Kyoko to keep this revelation a secret from the other Magical Girls until Homura is able to figure out what is going on.
Eventually Homura realizes she is the Witch and transforms into Homulilly. Kyubey tells Madoka to reveal her true powers in order to save Homura, but Sayaka tells Madoka not to listen to him. She stabs herself in order to summon Oktavia and an army of Familiars from other Witches. The summoned familiars battle Homulilly's Familiars, while Oktavia holds off Homulilly herself. The other Magical Girls either fight off Homulilly's familiars or attack the ceiling of the barrier, cracking it. During the battle, Sayaka is rescued by Kyoko and admits that she regretted abandoning Kyoko at the end of the anime. The two girls then fight off familiars together, and Oktavia even uses Kyoko's spear to punch another hole in Homulilly's barrier. Finally Madoka shatters the ceiling of the barrier and exposes Kyubey's Isolation Field. She reaches out to Homura's remaining Humanity, and together they destroy the Isolation Field from within.
Back in the real world, Mami place Homura's Soul Gem on her body, and Kyoko watches as Madoka, Sayaka and Nagisa descend from the sky to take Homura into the Law of Cycles. Just as Madoka is about to touch Homura's Soul Gem, Homura grabs onto her hands and begins altering the universe. Kyoko is engulfed by the colors that spill out of Homura's Soul Gem and spread out over the universe.
Homura, now calling herself a demon, creates a new world. In this world, Kyoko is initially seen in her school uniform on the road to Mitakihara Middle School. She is sitting in a tree with a bag full of apples and is feeding one to a number of Liese, Homura's birdlike familiars. Kyoko takes a bite of another apple before tossing a third down to some Clara Dolls that waved their hands, asking for one. Homura, who is sitting in a chair below Kyoko, shakes her head and two of the Clara Dolls watch the apple fall into the creek. Kyoko is surprised as nobody was there to catch the apple.
At the end of the movie, a smiling Sayaka is shown taking a stick of Pocky from Kyoko, indicating that they've become good friends in Homura's new universe.

In Kazumi Magica
Kyoko makes a brief appearance in chapter 16 of Kazumi Magica. She was mentioned in Michiru Kazusa's diary, as she describes how she met Yuuri Asuka, who at that time was fighting against Kyoko. In Chapter 19, Umika Misaki uses 'Rosso Fantasma', a spell unique to Kyoko, implying that Umika met Kyoko and copied/learned the spell from her.
In Oriko Magica
"Just like what you read in manga, right? But it ain't like in manga where your overflowing love and courage is enough to give you the strength to save your butt. And ain't nothing can bring dead family members back to life."

Kyoko takes in Yuma Chitose, a young girl orphaned when her parents are killed by a Witch shortly before Kyoko kills it. Yuma has no one to go back to, and together they break into bathhouses and share a hotel room. Kyoko tries to instill her own morals into Yuma, and tells her to never disrespect and waste food. Yuma accompanies Kyoko to fight Witches, and when checking for wounds on Yuma after she has a close call with a Witch, Kyoko learns of Yuma's abusive past, and sympathizes with her even more. Kyubey appears and tells Kyoko about the murders of Magical Girls. He attempts to contract with Yuma, but Kyoko stops him and tells Yuma to never become a Magical Girl.
Kyoko leaves Yuma in their hotel room and goes out to fight a Witch alone. Kyoko nearly dies from having her legs and arms torn off by the Witch. Yuma, who has just made a contract with Kyubey, uses her new healing powers to save her. Kyoko is incredibly angry that the girl didn't heed her warnings about contracting, but after Yuma cries about fearing that she's useless and that she had been pushed to the edge by a girl named Oriko Mikuni, Kyoko subsides. She does, however, promise to make Oriko pay for what she'd done.
Kyoko speaks with Mami about the recent murders of Magical Girls. Mami is looking for a "black Magical Girl", but Kyoko knows only as much as Mami does. Yuma then flips Mami's skirt in defense of Kyoko, thinking that Mami was bullying her caretaker. Kyoko tells her that she is mistaken about Mami, but thanks her for trying to be helpful. She asks Mami about Oriko, but Mami doesn't know anything and Kyoko will tell her no more about it.
Kyoko and Yuma fight together with Mami against Kirika Kure after saving the blond Magical Girl. The fact that a Magical Girl will become a Witch in her despair, but Yuma's words unite them again and together with Mami, they defeat Kirika's Witch.
Oriko is killed, and everyone seems to be safe, but Oriko's final attack kills Madoka. Kyoko asks Yuma if she can heal her, but it's too late, so Homura resets the timeline.
In Madoka Magica Portable

- Kyoko's illusion ability recovers a little in the 3rd volume, when she tries to stop Mami from committing suicide. (Die with Oktavia)
- She not only can make multiple images of herself, but also can make other kinds of illusions. She fakes Mami to believe her own soul gem is cleansed, to stop Mami from turning into Candeloro.
- Kyoko finally is defeated by a witch and dies. Before this, she gets a grief seed from Oktavia to cleanse Mami's soul gem.

Heartphial Story: The Path I Chose
Kyoko Sakura reflects on how even though she knows the truth about Magical Girls, she refuses to change. She uses her powers for herself and only sticks with others by choice.
Kyoko observes Mami and a new Magical Girl from a distance. She considers heading to the arcade to practice dance moves. A young girl drops an apple, and Kyoko catches it. The girl's mother thanks her, and the girl calls her "big sis." The memory reminds Kyoko of a time when even an apple was a feast for her family.
Kyoko reflects on her childhood. Her family was poor but happy. Now they are all gone because of her. She senses a Witch and enters its Labyrinth. Familiars overwhelm her, and she is unable to reach the Witch. She realizes she used too much magic and decides to retreat. The Labyrinth disappears, and the Witch escapes, leaving Kyoko frustrated.
Kyoko practices dance moves at the arcade. Mami finds her and asks if she noticed anything unusual. Kyoko says she fought a Witch earlier but it escaped. Mami offers to team up. Kyoko refuses, saying she does not use her magic for others unlike Mami.
Kyoko thinks about the Witch and how she could have drawn away the Familiars if she still had her illusion magic. She remembers when she was like Mami, using magic to help others because of her father's teachings. Her wish to make everyone listen to her father led to his death and the destruction of her family. Since then, she has been unable to create illusions. She vows never to use her magic to help others again and decides to carve her own path with just her spear.
Kyoko sees the young girl from earlier with a Witch's Kiss. She follows her into the Labyrinth though the girl is unconscious, and Familiars surround Kyoko. She fights them while trying to protect the girl.
Mami arrives and offers to help. Kyoko refuses. She is overwhelmed by the Familiars. A Familiar attacks her from behind, and she is injured. She plays dead to draw them in, then attacks. She defeats all the Familiars and the Witch.
Mami is relieved Kyoko is alive. Kyoko says she took them all down herself. Mami tells her not to push herself in the future. Kyoko says she lives for herself and will do what she wants. The girl's mother arrives and Kyoko asks Mami to take credit for the rescue. She did it as thanks for the apple the girl gave her earlier, but she does not want anyone thinking she is a good person.
Magia Record
Kyoko is a Magical Girl from Kazamino who doesn't seem to go to school or have a home. Defiant and pragmatic, she often butts heads with other Magical Girls. She wields a multi-jointed spear, and can create magical barriers. She is always snacking.

Doppel Description
The Doppel of abandonment.
Its form is a Wǔdàn.
The master of this emotion doesn’t trust its mysterious power, she only borrows its weapon and wields it herself. To the master, it's no more than a hateful thing that drags up her painful past due to its power, a dubious hypnotic magic that controls mist to produce illusions. But even still, it possesses her regrets, hidden deep in her heart, so she allows it to aid her somewhat in battle, though she remains suspicious of it. The Doppel itself is the fluttering kimono-like thing, while the candlestick holder the master rides is a separate being altogether.

この感情の主は、得体の知れないこのちからを全く信用しておらず、ドッペルから武器を拝借し自分自身の手で刃を振るう。
主にとっては霧を操り幻を生み怪しげな催眠魔法を行使するこのドッペルの能力からして過去を思い起こさせるだけの忌々しいものでしかないが、それでも感情の底へしまい込んだかつての未練をこのドッペルは持っており胡散臭いと感じながらも出現後にある程度の攻撃の手伝いをすることは容認している。
ちなみに、主を上にのせて走り回る燭台の部分とはためく着物のような部分はそれぞれ別固体らしくドッペルとしての本体は着物の方らしい。

Kyoko goes to Kamihama City after hearing about it from Mami Tomoe. She begins to hunt witches but is disappointed when she finds a familiar. Suddenly, she sees another magical girl, Ren Isuzu, fight the familiar. Kyoko keeps her from killing the monster, claiming that she's wasting Grief Seeds. The familiar gets away. Ren says she's trying to stop malicious witches who spread the malice of human beings. Kyoko asks if she became a magical for justice or to save people, claiming those reasons are a joke. Ren says she doesn't want a malicious tragedy to happen again. Kyoko asks if witches killed Ren's family. Ren replies that she was the one killed by a witch. Ren explains that she became a magical girl when she attempted suicide from being bullied. She says this is why she has to defeat witches. Kyoko tells her to do as she pleases, and Ren runs off to find the familiar. Kyoko thinks back to the death of her family. Despite her own philosophy, she runs after Ren, berating herself the whole time. Kyoko finds the familiar has turned into a witch, which Ren is fighting. Kyoko rescues Ren from the witch and insists she's not there to save her. Kyoko quickly dispatches the witch. Ren thanks her, but Kyoko insists she just came to hunt the witch. She tells Ren to be more careful next time. Ren says she ought to use her power to protect people. Kyoko says she doesn't have the power to protect people - if she did she wouldn't need Kyoko's help. Ren decides to become stronger, and Kyoko admits if Ren became stronger she couldn't complain about what she does. She gives Ren the witch's Grief Seed, claiming that optimistic girls like her tend to die. However, Kyoko also says Ren looks like the sort of person who gets their stuff together quickly. Ren thanks her and departs. Kyoko wonders what she's doing, but admits to herself it doesn't feel bad. In her narration, she wonders if pure-hearted people are easier to hurt. On a later day, Kyoko can't find witches and is both bored and hungry. She sees a passerby take his son to a restaurant, and realizes she never went to one with her own family. Kyoko decides to forget about it and eat snacks. Suddenly, a girl appears. She introduces herself as Manaka Kurumi, and says she saw Kyoko fighting the other day. The reason she called Kyoko out is because the snack Kyoko was eating was unhealthy. Kyoko says her health is none of her business. Manaka points out that as a magical girl she needs to take care of her health to fight witches. Kyoko says magical girls don't need to worry about that, but then Manaka says that if she keeps eating foods with artificial flavors her tongue will stop working. She offers Kyoko her cooking, to reform her sense of taste. Kyoko accepts, if only because it's a free meal. Manaka brings Kyoko to a restaurant owned by her father and cooking master. When asked what she wants to eat, Kyoko answers she wants omelette rice. As Manaka makes the meal, Kyoko notes she mutters to herself while cooking. When the meal is ready, Kyoko eats it and claims it's delicious. Manaka says the omulet rice was made with walnuts, and says that if you try it once you won't be able to eat any other kind. Manaka that her food made Kyoko smile. When she's done eating, Kyoko asks if Manaka can make anything. Manaka says she's still in training but will eventually be able to do so. Kyoko offers to be a taste-tester and promises to eat every bite. Manaka says her feelings towards food are fascinating. She asks Kyoko if those feelings came from her parents' influence, as Manaka believes parenting tends to be the cause of that sort of thing. She thinks Kyoko must have a wonderful family. Kyoko is forced to remember why she became a magical girl and how her wish destroyed her family. She tells Manaka that knowing how important it is to eat and live is what saved her family. Kyoko claims that to eat is to live, and she decided to live through anything and everything. Kyoko then prepares to leave the restaurant, and Manaka says she can come back anytime. Manaka says she doesn't know what happened in Kyoko's past, but she will always serve her food with a smile. Kyoko says if Manaka has the time to cook she should go hunt witches instead. Kyoko points out that though Manaka cooks food for other people, there's no guarantee that someone will come to save her. Manaka says Kyoko is wrong - she cooks for herself, because she likes to see other people happy. Kyoko says Manaka is weird, but admits she likes her cooking and will come back when she feels like it. Kyoko then departs, wondering how long it's been since she ate at such a stylish restaurant. On another day, Kyoko decides to investigate Kamihama's rumors for lack of anything better to do. She hears a rumor about the "Hanasaka Girl", who makes flowers blooms wherever she walks. Kyoko decides to wait at the rumor's supposed location. Kyoko then sees a girl walk by carrying flowers. She calls out the girl and asks if she's a witch. The girl introduces herself as Konomi Haruna, a magical girl. She asks Kyoko if she looks like a witch. Kyoko says she doesn't, but points out Kamihama is a weird place. Kyoko says Konomi looked weird because she's carrying all those flowers. Konomi explains that she's a florist. Kyoko, realizing the rumor was just something ordinary, introduces herself. Konomi hopes they can get along, but Kyoko says she doesn't work with others. Kyoko claims that witch hunting is a competition, and when Konomi says it isn't, she asks if that means Konomi will give her the Grief Seeds. Konomi then asks if they can be friends if she lets Kyoko have the Grief Seeds. Kyoko says yes, calling it a "collaborative relationship". Suddenly they detect a witch. Kyoko decides to go after it, saying Konomi is in the middle of carrying flowers. Konomi says its dangerous, but Kyoko tells her not to worry and departs. Kyoko finds and fights the witch, and is surprised when Konomi arrives. She tells Konomi to stay away, but Konomi is attacked by the witch. Kyoko dispatches the witch and asks Konomi why she came. Konomi says she wanted to fight alongside Kyoko, but Kyoko asks how she can protect others when she can't protect herself. Kyoko says that for magical girls, the ones who don't think before they act die. She tells Konomi to stop acting like an idiot, which leaves Konomi at a loss for words. Kyoko prepares to leave, but realizes Konomi is injured and can't move. She reluctantly tells Konomi to get on her back, claiming that leaving her there would leave a bad taste in her mouth. Konomi promises to get stronger in the future. Kyoko brings Konomi and the flowers she was carrying earlier to Konomi's house. Konomi insists on giving Kyoko flowers, but Kyoko isn't interested. Konomi says that flowers are all she has to offer. She deduces that Kyoko's name contains the character for "apricot' and says that since the flowers of an apricot tree are beautiful, and because Kyoko is a kind person, she feels it would be nice if Kyoko could start to like flowers. Kyoko reluctantly accepts. Konomi gives her a nadeshiko flower, and tells her it would look cute if Kyoko stuck it in her hair. Kyoko insists it wouldn't and departs. Konomi thanks her before she leaves. Afterward, Kyoko notes she subconsciously stuck the flower in her hair, but insists it doesn't suit her. Kyoko narrates she ended up meeting a cute witch. |

 Kyoko sits in her hotel room all worn out from the day’s practice. She wonders what it’s like to put on a play for the first time on stage and then wonders who she got ropes into all of this. Kyoko puts on her wolf outfit to practice her lines but her grumbling stomach won’t let her concentrate. She takes her costume back off and decides to rustle up something to eat. She heads down to the hotel’s restaurant but it seems they’ve already run out of souvenir sweets. Figuring she must have gotten the date wrong, Kyoko heads into the kitchen to raid it but finds nothing but flour and carrots. The lights in the restaurant suddenly come on and an old guard looks around, calling out to ask if anyone is there. A second, younger guard shows up and asks what’s going on. The first guard mentions he heard a noise but the younger guard thinks it was just in his head. Knowing she’ll get caught if she sticks around, Kyoko makes a break for it but not before knocking something over and making a noise. The guards turn their attention towards the noise and Kyoko is just able to escape back to her hotel room unseen. Back in her room, Kyoko’s stomach grumbles loudly once more. At this point she doesn’t care if it’s food from a supermarket or convenience store, she just needs to eat. But after the debacle downstairs she knows that the guards will be on alert. Suddenly, Kyoko gets hit by a flash of inspiration and decides to put the costume back on. Kyoko heads back down to the hotel restaurant and once more the guards come looking around for anyone suspicious. They hear a clicking and tapping noise and call out for any thieves to show themselves. This time when they flick the lights on, Kyoko leaps out at them and howls fiercely. The two guards scream in fright and fall over themselves trying to run away as they call for help. They swear they saw a bear, or wolf or something inside the restaurant. Kyoko falls over laughing at their faces. Back up in her room, the next morning she overhears the staff talking about a beast that appeared in the hotel that night. Although most of them don’t believe the story, the hotel did increase the security at night. Kyoko thinks she might have overdone it a little and resigns herself to practicing her lines in her hotel room after all.
 Sayaka tells Kyoko that she and the rest of the team are going to the nearby restaurant and invites her to come with them, to which Kyoko agrees saying that she is hungry. As Kyoko thinks about what she could eat at the restaurant she sees what she thinks is a giant watermelon outside the restaurant and gets excited thinking about eating it, but the she realizes it's actually a float. Kyoko is disappointed but thinks the float is cute but seeing the price she thinks it's too expensive and she doesn't have money to buy it. Sayaka approaches Kyoko and notices that Kyoko is interested in the float, to which she is embarrassed and denies her interest, leaving the place and going back at the beach. Sayaka thinks that the float could help Kyoko because she is a bad swimmer, at that moment Mami appears and asks Sayaka if she will not go with them to eat. Sayaka tells her that she wants to do something nice for Kyoko and apologizes, but Mami tells her there's no problem. Sayaka rents the float for Kyoko to use (with her). Kyoko thanks Sayaka, but then both start fighting over using it first.
 Kyoko wakes up to find herself in a weird looking Witch’s barrier. The last thing she remembers was going to Kamihama and buying a scarf. There, she bumped into Madoka Kaname and Homura Akemi. They compliment her on her scarf, which she explains is made of faux fur. Both of them had finished their errands and were going to go check out “Endless Mirrors”, which is a Witch barrier in Kamihama they had heard about where they could find things that are useful to Magical Girls. But they warned here it was full of Magical Girl copies. They invite Kyoko to go with them who agreed to tag along. The three of them had ventured deeper and deeper into Mirrors, but after that she couldn’t remember anything. Just then, a Familiar approaches Kyoko. Kyoko transforms and attacks the Familiar by using her illusion magic to trick it before defeating it. She then realizes after the battle that she was using the original magic she was granted when she first contracted. She had been unable to use that magic ever since her family was destroyed which is why she had to learn how to fight using burning blades, which she likened to fake magic just like how her scarf was made of fake fur. Suddenly, she spots another Kyoko nearby. She assumes this one is a copy and transforms once more. The other Kyoko squares off against her as the first one casts an illusion in order to attack. The “other” Kyoko is surprised to find she’s been attacked by illusion magic. She mentions it was her special technique a long time ago but she’s no longer able to use it. Instead she closes her eyes momentarily as she focuses herself before piercing the first Kyoko with her blade. Madoka and Homura quickly catch up to Kyoko and ask if she’s okay. Kyoko motions to the stabbed Kyoko and says it was only a copy. The stabbed Kyoko then realizes that she was the Mirror copy all along, which explains why she couldn’t remember anything after entering the barrier. As the copy dies, it silently encourages the real Kyoko to continue using the fake magic she has and wishes her good luck. Madoka asks if Kyoko used to fight differently long ago. Kyoko says she used to use illusion magic before, but it doesn’t matter what she uses or used to use. All she can do now is stab her spear straight into her enemy, because that’s who she is now. And that’s what makes her the real Kyoko.
 One chilly morning, Kyoko is on her way to Mami’s apartment. She wants to stop at the arcade on the way, but unfortunately, it’s not opening time yet. When she gets there, Mami and the rest of the Holy Quintet are there to greet her in their kimonos. However, Sayaka quickly realizes that Kyoko doesn’t have one herself, and states that they can’t go to the shrine if she’s the odd one out. Despite being offered a spare kimono from Mami, Kyoko refuses to wear one, claiming that it would be tight and hard to walk around in. Luckily, Mami knows just what will turn Kyoko around, and says that if she wears the kimono for a week, she will get unlimited tea and sweets whenever she’s visits. Naturally, the bribe works like a charm, and Mami promptly helps Kyoko get dressed. Soon, a disgruntled Kyoko comes out and shows off her new look, which is said to really suit her. While Madoka and Homura compliment her, Sayaka begins to feel something more, confusing Kyoko.
 Kyoko went to Mami's sleepover, she agreed to go even though she doesn't like noisy places with a lot of people. Kyoko enjoys a hot shower and Mami says that she had to reheat the water because Kyoko ran out of all the hot water, but Kyoko says that she knows there is no problem with Mami and she agrees with her. Mami invites Kyoko some ice tea that she has in her refrigerator. While Kyoko drinks her cold tea she sees Mami drying and combing Homura's hair, complimenting her for having such long and silky hair, to which Homura comments that it is because she takes care of her hair, but Kyoko does not understand why they talk about hair. Mami asks Sayaka if she uses treatments for her hair, Sayaka replies that she has the best treatments and asks the others about the treatments they have. Madoka says that she dries her hair with a hair dryer because her mother told her it was easier to manage that way, while Homura puts oils on her hair. Kyoko thinks she's not interested, but she thinks hair treatments seem like a pain. Kyoko tells Mami that she left the glass with which she drank the tea in the sink, but Sayaka stares at Kyoko's hair, who asks if she has something in her hair. An embarrassed Sayaka says that she just thought Kyoko's hair was surprisingly pretty, but Kyoko gets upset because she said that "it is surprising." Homura and Mami agree, as Kyoko's hair is very shiny and she doesn't have split ends, while Sayaka and Madoka ask if she has a hair treatment, but Kyoko denies doing any care to her hair. The four girls are surprised to see that Kyoko naturally has such beautiful hair. An upset Sayaka thinks it is unfair that Kyoko doesn't take care of her hair because her hair is naturally beautiful like that. Mami asks Kyoko if she dries her hair hard with towels when she comes out of the shower and Kyoko says if she dries her hair that way, because otherwise it takes a while fo her hair to dry, so Mami asks Sayaka to pin down Kyoko while the rest of them put treatment on her hair, because it would be a waste for such beautiful hair to be ruined. Kyoko screams out as she refuses. |
A Magical Girl enjoying the summer sun and sea. Although she usually can’t swim, this Magical Girl Form allows her to do so, so well she can even catch fish while doing it. Powerful as ever, she uses her beachball to rain fire upon her enemies, especially Mitama.

Its form is a warrior actress.
The master of this emotion doesn’t trust her Doppel’s enigmatic power, but since she’s temporarily become able to swim, she’s actually on cloud nine. And though she normally views her Doppel as nothing but loathsome, it can use its hypnosis magic to project a vision of swimming freely through the sea, which transforms it into a source of elation for its master. This is also reflected in its method of attack: the Doppel has fused with a large mirror, with which its master can collect the sunlight beaming down behind her and concentrate it into a ferocious heat ray. If there is nothing left to attack, they ride away on the candle holder (now a sea turtle) and swim along with the fish.

それは攻撃にも現れており、主は背後から照りつける陽光を鏡と一体化したドッペルに受け止めさせると、強烈な熱線に収束させて相手に浴びせている。攻撃を加える相手がいなくなれば、ウミガメとなった燭台に乗って、魚と共に泳いでいる。

Homura Akemi, Mami Tomoe, Sayaka Miki, and Madoka Kaname are all glad to be back at the beach. Sayaka is surprised that Kyoko was the one to invite them but Kyoko recounts what happened. Mitama Yakumo had asked Kyoko to transform for her. Kyoko transforms and once again she’s transformed into her magical swimsuit. Mitama was worried that might happen so she asks Kyoko for a bit more patient while she makes the necessary preparations. Kyoko says that’s fine as long as she can fix it. Mitama assures her she can and to make up for it she gives Kyoko tickets to a beachside all-you-can-eat buffet, telling her to go enjoy herself with her friends from Mitakihara. Sayaka knows the story since Kyoko told them earlier but she’s still surprised that Kyoko actuallyinvited them to hang out. Kyoko tells her she doesn’t have to eat and waves the ticket in her face. Sayaka says she didn’t mean it and takes the ticket from her. Inside Kyoko is sorry for all the trouble she probably caused them when they got stranded on that deserted island and hands Mami and the others their tickets to the buffet. The girls decide to go swimming but Kyoko tells them she can go swimming later and makes a beeline for the buffet. After they’re done swimming, Madoka and the rest head to the buffet but don’t see Kyoko anywhere. Sayaka thinks she must have finished eating already until Kyoko calls to the group from where she’s sitting outside. She finishes up her shaved ice and Madoka comments on all the empty plates in front of her. Kyoko says she’s just getting started and heads back into the buffet line for more food. Mami warns her to be careful and not overdo it. Sayaka tells Kyoko she should go swimming at some point while there here and questions if she really can swim now. Kyoko says she can as long as she has this form and jumps into the ocean to show them. Mami asks if she had something done to her Soul Gem and wonders how that would even work. Kyoko doesn’t care how it works now that she can swim and she challenges Sayaka to a swimming race. Sayaka thinks those are bold words for someone who was using a float last time they were at the beach, but Kyoko says she could have beaten Sayaka in a race even with her float. They ask Mami to be the judge and begin racing in the water. After 5 losses and 5 wins each, Sayaka is getting tired even though Kyoko is down for another round. Mami suggests they do something together instead and Sayaka notices that Madoka is talking to someone from the restaurant. They go over to Madoka who explains that the restaurant sets up cliff diving into the sea. It’s a good spot for beginners so she was suggesting it to them. They all head to the cliff where an instructor has them line up so they can jump one at a time after he explains the rules to them. Sayaka thinks she sees someone she knows as the girl at the head of the line jumps off the cliff and into the ocean, all while yelling about how she’s doing it for her beloved Hayato. They notice that several of the Magical Girls from Kamihama are there, including Mikazuki Villa. Ui wants to try cliff diving too since Felicia is doing it but Yachiyo dissuades her since Ui doesn’t know how to swim. Sayaka suggests they learn what the rules are and check it out before deciding on anything. They learn that the water is 15 feet deep so they have to be good swimmers to try it out. Kyoko says that’s not a problem for her anymore and she jumps off the cliff into the sea. She calls up to Sayaka, telling her it was tons of fun and a bit of a rush. Sayaka jumps into the sea and comes up smiling. Madoka and Homura don’t think they can do it so they just watch their friends instead. The sun begins to set as the manager tells them that cliff diving is done for the day. He informs the group that they’ll be open for diving for the next two days. Mami thinks it was tons of fun and got hooked after the first jump. Since it looked like everyone had fun, Madoka and Homura think they might like to try it out as well. Since Madoka has things to do with her family the next day, she suggests they all get together the day after. They all agree to meet up the day after and head out. Kyoko thinks it was a fun day for everyone and thinks she might ask Mitama if she can keep the form for the summer since being able to swim is very useful. Kyoko does just that and goes to see Mitama the next day. Mitama is ready to fix her Magical Girl form but Kyoko asks if it’s okay if she stays that way for the summer since swimsuits in summer are normal and she wants to be able to go swimming more. Mitama says that’s fine and tells her to come back whenever she likes since it’s her fault anyways. She asks if Kyoko has plans for the day but Kyoko was just going to go swimming alone since she has nothing better to do. Kyoko then takes off for the beach while Mitama is just happy to see her enjoy herself. Kyoko arrives at the beach but the place is crowded with people. She finally decides to jump into the ocean and she swims out into the deeper end. Kyoko doesn’t mind swimming with a float but knowing how to swim can be just as fun. As she swims around she hears heavy splashing nearby and notices that a child is drowning. Kyoko swims over and is just able to stand on the sand, allowing her to lift the child up above the water. It’s Ui Tamaki! Kyoko asks if she’s alright but Ui asks her to put her down. It turns out she wasn’t drowning at all but practicing her swimming. She show’s Kyoko her doggy paddle and as inelegant as it is she manages to stay afloat. Kyoko still thinks her style looks like someone drowning. She asks if the others are around but Ui had gone to the beach by herself after leaving a note at home because everyone else was too busy. Ui says she has to learn how to swim by tomorrow so she came to the beach to practice. Kyoko says she’s still too young to go swimming at the beach by herself. She asks her why she didn’t just have Mitama take a look at her Soul Gem instead but Ui is determined to learn the skill for herself. Ui asks if Kyoko can help her practice. Since she has nothing better to do, and figuring Ui is going to do it by herself anyways, Kyoko agrees to keep an eye on her while she practices. Kyoko can’t teach her herself since she doesn’t actually know how but at least Ui will stay safe this way. Ui tries splashing around a bit and proudly calls out to Kyoko when she manages to move forward a few inches. Kyoko stares at her in disbelief. Kyoko doesn’t think Ui is improving at all and she can’t understand why she wouldn’t want to take the easy way out and just ask Mitama. Ui asks her what’s wrong since Kyoko was just staring, so Kyoko tells her she’s doing it all wrong. When Ui asks her how she should be doing it, Kyoko recalls when Sayaka was trying to teach her how to swim. Sayaka offered to hold her hands so she could learn to float in the water by laying still. Then, while Kyoko kept her back straight, she had her try kicking her legs. Kyoko replicates the actions with Ui, but Ui kicks her legs out everywhich way. They stop and Kyoko swims a few laps so Ui can see how her legs move. Ui tries it again, only this time she keeps her legs straight. Kyoko thinks she’s improved quite a bit. Now that they’ve “mastered” the art of swimming above water, Ui wants to try her hand at staying underwater. Kyoko says that should be easy, but Ui claims she always floats right back to the top when she tries. Kyoko is surprised to see that Ui does indeed just float to the top like a buoy when she demonstrates for her. Ui asks her how to stay under since her sister makes it look so easy,but rather than answer her Kyoko suggests they take a quick break. Ui agrees and heads to the shore to get something to drink. Kyoko watches her and she thinks to herself that Ui has improved a lot more than she would have thought thanks to her determination. Kyoko catches up to Ui, who asks her if she’s going to buy anything. Kyoko doesn’t have any money so she just politely declines. Ui goes and buys a bottle of ramune and offers it to Kyoko. Kyoko notices she only has the one bottle and asks her what happened to hers. Ui replies that she only had enough money to buy one so she wanted Kyoko to have it as thanks for taking the time to teach her. Kyoko refuses it since Ui was the one who was thirsty and it was her money. Instead, Ui suggests they simply share the ramune so they can each get half. She even offers to let Kyoko keep the marble that’s in the bottle. Kyoko smiles and happily accepts. The two girls thank each other once more and enjoy the drink together. After their break, Ui is still determined to learn how to stay underwater. However, Kyoko doesn’t know how to help her with that since she can’t figure out why Ui keeps floating so easily. She wonders if maybe one of the Magical Girls from Kamihama is around to help them as she looks around on the beach. Just then Kyoko spies Sayaka in the distance and calls her over. It turns out Sayaka had forgotten her phone at the restaurant the other day and had come to pick it up. She asks what Kyoko is doing with Ui at the beach, but Kyoko tells her it’s a long story. Kyoko explains to Sayaka about Ui’s sinking problem and luckily Sayaka brought her swimsuit with her since she was going to do a bit of swimming after getting her phone. The group heads out into the water, just deep enough to swim but shallow enough for them to stand. Sayaka has Kyoko demonstrate how to swim underwater by having her dive for some seashells. Kyoko dives into the water. Ui is amazed at what a good swimmer Kyoko is, but Sayaka tells her the last time she tried this she was too good at staying under and didn’t come back up. Kyoko comes up to the surface and tells Sayaka she heard that. She shows Ui a pretty little white seashell she found at the bottom. Sayaka tells Ui to try her best to swim down to where Kyoko will be waiting for her under the water. Kyoko tells her not to take too long since she can’t hold her breath forever. Kyoko dives down while Ui dives down shortly after her. It takes a few moments longer but the two girls finally come up for air. Ui proudly shows Sayaka a seashell she picked up from the sandy bottom. Sayaka and Kyoko are both proud of how much she’s improved and Ui says it’s thanks to them. Ui wants to practice coming up from the bottom by going into deeper water. The two are willing to let Ui go into somewhat deeper water but they caution her to stay close to them at all times. Ui takes a deep breath as she prepares herself for another dive. Kyoko asks her if she’s sure she wants to continue since she knows how to swim and dive down now but Ui still wants to practice and learn how to swim back up from way down deep. Ui takes a deep breath and dives down deep into the water. Sayaka and Kyoko try to watch her but Ui manages to make a turn and they lose sight of her for a second. They start to worry since it’s been a good little while since she went down and just as they start to really worry, Ui pops back up to the surface a short distance from them. The two are relieved and figured Ui simply got too excited until they notice that Ui is making a face and flailing her arms around. That’s when they notice Ui was quickly getting further away from them. Sayaka figures that Ui must have been caught in a ripcurrent so Kyoko immediately dives into the water and takes off after Ui. Kyoko swims as fast and as hard as she can and manages to catch up to Ui and pull her back to safety. Ui looks a little frightened because she couldn’t swim back to them but Kyoko is just relieved that she made it in time. But as Kyoko tries to swim back with Ui, she notices that the current is really fighting her and they’re not making headway. Kyoko isn’t going to let them be washed up on that deserted island again. Sayaka makes motions at her and Kyoko finally figures out that Sayaka is trying to tell her to swim sideways. Kyoko grabs hold of Ui and swims sideways to get out of the rip current before swimming towards land. Safe on the beach, Kyoko catches her breath while Ui thanks them for saving her. Kyoko wonders if it was the ripcurrents and not the big wave that sent her and the others to that island. Sayaka tells Ui not to worry since it wasn’t her fault. They’re just glad she’s safe. Kyoko figures that’s it for her training since she almost drowned and asks Ui if she wasn’t scared. After a moment, Ui hesitantly admits that she was very scared but she’s still determined to practice and learn how to swim. Sayaka tells her there’s no rush to learn and the girls from MIkazuki Villa can teach her tomorrow, but Ui is adamant that she has to learn before tomorrow. Kyoko asks her if there isn’t something she’s not telling them and Ui says that all the girls are going to go diving tomorrow. Kyoko remembers the cliffdiving from the other day and how Iroha had told Ui she couldn’t go diving with them because she can’t swim even though Ui had really wanted to participate. Since tomorrow is the last day for cliffdiving, Ui needs to learn how to swim by the end of the day. This way she can prove herself and join in on the fun with the others. Sayaka and Kyoko look at Ui as she begs them to let her keep practicing. Kyoko now understands why she didn’t want to take the easy way and just have Mitama adjust her Soul Gem. Kyoko concedes and agrees to help Ui keep practicing. Sayaka is surprised to hear this from Kyoko, but Kyoko says she has to since she was paid in advance as she holds up the glass marble from the ramune bottle. Sayaka and Kyoko stay with Ui and help her practice until the sun sets. By now Ui has perfected the art of swimming and Kyoko gives her a big smile as she tells her to make sure to have fun tomorrow. Ui smiles back and promises them that she will. The next day the five girls from Mitakihara all meet up on the beach. Madoka talks about how excited she is to try cliff diving as they all change into their swimsuits. They all go up to the cliff where Sayaka and Mami have no trouble immediately jumping off and into the ocean. Madoka jumps too with Homura following close behind her. Kyoko jumps last, but not before wondering if Ui would be there today. The girls splash around in the ocean. Homura thinks it was scary at first but once you do it the fear just melts away. In fact, she’s ready for another go. The girls make their way back up the cliff where they find Ui and Iroha waiting. Iroha is telling Ui that she had already told her no because it’s too dangerous for her. Ui is insisting she knows how to swim now but Iroha is afraid it’s still too dangerous. Yachiyo agrees with Iroha and they suggest they do something different. But Ui is determined to try it, especially after how hard and long she practiced to improve her swimming. Kyoko watches but she thinks it’s not her place to interfere until she remembered just how hard Ui worked all of yesterday to improve. Kyoko steps up and asks them to give her a chance. Iroha tells Kyoko that she heard about how she taught Ui to swim and thanks her. Kyoko says it was no big deal since she just happened to be here. Kyoko then tells Iroha to give Ui a chance and tells her that Ui was almost swept away by a rip current the other day. Iroha hadn’t heard about this and is shocked. Kyoko then goes on to tell Iroha that, even though Ui was really scared by that, she never gave up and continued to work hard to practice and learn to swim. She describes Ui’s determination and hard work and asks Ui if she’s confident in her swimming skills. Ui says she is and she knows she can do this. Ui tells Iroha and Yachiyo that she can do it. Yachiyo and Iroha look troubled for a moment but they finally give their blessing and allow Ui to jump so long as she’s careful. Ui and Kyoko head to the edge and look down. Ui thinks it’s higher than she was expecting and, even though she’s a bit scared, she’s more exicted than scared. She thanks Kyoko for standing up for her and talking to Yachiyo andher big sister, but Kyoko says she didn’t do anything. Ui is the one who earned it through her own hard work when she could have just taken the easy way out. Kyoko realizes something but instead she tells Ui to go ahead and jump first. Ui steels herself up and jumps off the cliff into the sea. Iroha and Kyoko watch anxiously as they wait for Ui to come up to the surface. Kyoko tells Iroha not to worry since floating is Ui’s specialty. Just then Ui’s head pops up above the water as she happily calls up to the others. She yells words of thanks to Kyoko for training her and trusting her. Kyoko smiles back at her and jumps off the cliff as well. Back at Mitama’s place, Mitama asks Kyoko to transform once again. This time when Kyoko transforms it’s into her regular Magical Girl outfit. Kyoko says sorry for rushing Mitama like that but Mitama was happy to oblige since she had told her to come back whenever. Mitama asks if something happened since Kyoko was happy with wearing the swimsuit for the summer. Kyoko tells Mitama about how Ui almost got swept away but she still followed through with the decision she had made even though she could have taken the easy way out. Seeing a small child be that determined to learn how to do something made her feel bad for taking the easy way so she decided to practice and learn how to swim on her own without Mitama’s help. Kyoko asks Mitama if she can trade in a grief seed for money. Normally Mitama wouldn’t do such a trade but she asks Kyoko the reason why. Kyoko says she wants to buy some ramune but she needs money obtained through proper means to do so. She knows someone who’s good at floating and she wants to ask her to teach her, so she’ll need the ramune as payment. Mitama smiles and says she’ll make an exception for her. |

After the events of Homecoming, Kyubey approaches Kyoko one day in the arcade for more information regarding her newfound form. Kyoko explains that she only entered her doppel-fused form once; afterwards, whenever she's transformed, she's gone back to her usual magical girl outfit. Kyubey assumes that a form like hers could only appear in Kamihama, given its connection to the doppels themselves. Kyubey theorizes that Kyoko's new form has significant implications regarding the Automatic Purification System. Given his undergoing study of this system, he wants all the info he can, and therefore requests that Kyoko test transforming in Kamihama to see if her new form emerges again. Shortly afterwards, Nagisa comes barging into the arcade, urgently seeking Kyoko. Kyoko needs some food, first, so she and Nagisa head to a restaurant. After some prodding, Nagisa explains that she needs Kyoko to help cover for a lie. In summary, some time ago, Kyoko, Mami, and the rest of the gang saved a bunch of kindergarteners, who regularly visit a park that Nagisa also frequents. The other day, however, Nagisa had visited that park and ran into those very same kids, but this time the kids were in a big row with the teacher - the kids all claimed they had seen a real live magical girl, while the teacher insists it was all made up. Hence, Nagisa needs Kyoko's help to cover for their magical girl activities - it has to be Kyoko, because Mami and the others are in school when the kids are scheduled to visit the park. And becuase Kyoko has a lot of free time on her hands. Kyoko bristles at that, but it doesn't change the problem: they don't want the kids getting into any trouble because they believe in magical girls. Nagisa calls it "clearing up a misunderstanding" (Kyoko points out this is literally the exact opposite of doing that, but it's just the same either way). And Nagisa already has an idea of how they can rectify things: She'll say they were making a movie. At the park, the kindergarteners cling to Nagisa; unfortunately, they immediately recognize Kyoko as one of the magical girls who rescued them. The teacher intercedes and apologizes on their behalf, saying she thinks they must be mistaking Kyoko for some TV show character. While Nagisa and Kyoko have her attention, they "explain" things to the teacher about how they were really just filming something for an amateur movie. The teacher marvels at this, and Nagisa keeps spinning the lie out in an attempt to cover all their bases (while Kyoko is telepathically trying to get her stop talking), saying they frequently come to this park to film, and by the end of it, the teacher has just one request: let her class see the making of the movie. The scene changes to the duo explaining the situation to the rest of the team; Sayaka feels guilty getting involved, because this is like destroying a kid's belief in Santa, but Kyoko thinks not doing so would be worse: the girls in the class would be easy marks for Kyubey in the future. Mami, too, thinks it's better that the kids believe it's all fiction. Still, that means they need to roll with this lie, which requires a lot of work even for a fake amateur film production. They need costumes, equipment, and props (Homura volunteers golf clubs and bombs, and Madoka instantly says no bombs). They want magic as uninvolved in this production as possible, so they need to make or procure their own goods instead of relying on their magical girl outfits or weapons. They also need two or three actors to play the role of magical girls, and the rest can pretend to be crew members. They have much on their plate and so they have no choice but to tap into their connections in Kamihama. Their first go-to is Ashley Taylor, who agrees to handle the costume-making. Then Sayuki, who has all the sword props they could want, thanks to her idol job. Finally, Seira comes aboard, and very excited about loaning them film equipment and teaching them the ropes of filmmaking. We then transition to them practicing the scene they'll perform for the kindergarteners. Sayaka gripes that while they're magical girls, and therefore can easily perform high-level feats, it's tricky to do them in front of the camera, and with props they're not used to handling as well. And movie costumes are very fragile while performing these stunts, unlike their magical girl outfits. Meanwhile, Seira helps Homura with camerawork, while Ashley goes to take measurements for Kyoko and Sayaka. Here, the girls recap their roles: Sayaka and Kyoko are the "actors"; Madoka will run lights, Homura will operate the cameras, and Mami will be the director; and since it's a fake movie, they only need to worry about this one scene. Ashley gets everything she needs, and say she'll have their outfits completed in a jiffy. And on the big day, their performance takes off - Kyoko and Sayaka put Ashley's quick-changing costumes into action, which work so well it really looks like magic; Nagisa's job is to sneak the discarded clothes off the set. They act out the scene (a magical girl duel between Kyoko and Sayaka), and the kids gape in awe as they watch it all play out. After finishing, the girls are met with a round of applause. The kids ask how they did things like make the weapons glow and other special effects (with some lighting tricks and soap bubbles, Madoka explains), and Homura explains they'll add more special effects and sounds as they process the footage, which will make everything even more convincing. The kids seem to accept that it's all just a movie, but it doesn't diminish their enjoyment one bit - now they all want to be movie stars or filmmakers when they grow up. With all that settled, the teacher rounds up the kids to go home. The Holy Quintet wraps things up on their end, too. They all sit and review the footage together, praising each other's work, and Mami remarks that the video, when taken out of context, really does look like it's all a work of magic. They all worked so hard on this that they can't bring themselves to delete it, so Mami proposes that Homura send them all a copy of the clip as a memento. Unfortunately, Homura says she won't be able to for some time, since she has a lot of work she needs to do with her home computer. Kyoko says she'll return all the costumes, props, and equipment to their owners in Kamihama the next day, so she'll see if Seira can process the clip for them while she's at it. The next day, Kyoko drops off the weapon props with Sayuki, and finds she still has two hours to kill before she has to meet Seira and Ashley. Wracking her brain for something to do, she remembers Kyubey's request - that she transform while in Kamihama to see if she takes on her doppel form again. She brushes it off as soon as she spots an ad for a winter aquarium exhibition at Minagi Sea; once there, she finds the exhibition was actually interesting to go through. As she walks out, it has begun to snow, and she decides to play around with the camera before heading to Kosho - and she recognizes some kindergarten girls from the other day. But she then detects a witch, and moves to pursue. Once transformed, she's back in her usual magical girl outfit, not the doppel one - she makes a quick note of this, then takes off. She slays the witch before the kids get caught up in it - but unfortunately, they recognize her as she walks out. She realizes that in her rush to get the witch that she left the camera running when she ditched her bags outside the labyrinth, and it caught her detransforming and depowering her magic as she left the labyrinth. The camera is a decent cover for the kids, who immediately ask if she's filming for something else - but this time, they also ask how she was able to shoot fire out of her spear. Kyoko claims it was an optical illusion, but the girls don't buy it. They are convinced Kyoko really can use magic, just as they're whisked away. Not long after that, Kyoko takes the train to Kosho and meets Ashley and crew. Ashley says Kyoko is welcome to keep the outfits, but ultimately agrees to keep them at home in case they need them again. Meanwhile, Seira agrees she'll send the Quintet the video files, and even offers to edit them to make it look even more like a real movie. Once finished, she shows off the final result to Ashley and Kyoko - it really does look like a professional movie. Seira added in SFX and music, making this scene look like an epic battle of the fates. Seira sends the video to the Quintet and she starts deleting the camera's old clips, until she comes across the footage with Kyoko exiting the Labyrinth. Since they've got time, Kyoko asks if it's possible to remove the flame effects from her spear in this clip, explaining what happened with the kids. Unfortunately, Seira just doesn't have the know-how to do that - but Ashley's learned a thing or two about film production thanks to her dad and her work with her videos, and she takes the helm. While she's working, Seira asks Ashley about her dad, and in the course of that conversation, realizes he was THAT Taylor - and Ashley is HIS daughter. To Seira, this is like encountering Jesus in the flesh. While Seira is processing this fact, Ashley finishes processing Kyoko's video; the flames are all edited out, and Seira agrees to get this second video to Mami as well to serve as more "proof" that they aren't really magical girls (but Ashley does scold Kyoko for fooling small children). Ultimately, the con job is a success. Later, Kyoko finds herself chatting with Kyubey once more. He asks how the results of her experiment turned out, and after being told, he concludes that to access that form, the magical girl must be in a particular state of mind/being. The incident surrounding this new form was such a niche case that he has no idea if or when it will happen again, but his curiosity is stoked - this discovered new form may be another frontier for magical girls, filled with a world of unknown possibilities. Kyoko and Sayaka are shown mulling over what Kyubey said. This time, Kyoko does a bit of navel-gazing on the nature of magic to begin with - in making that movie, they were able to do quick-change costumes, do stunts, add convincing special effects (and remove actual special effects), and obscure the truth as well. While there is a lot that normal people can do, the primary difference is that, magical girls can use their powers to slay witches among other tasks and the main (and perhaps only) purpose of a magical girl is to hunt witches. Sayaka is not used to Kyoko being so contemplative, and asks if Kyoko's feeling depressed or something, but Kyoko says she is just feeling philosophical. She smirks, asking what Sayaka's doing, worrying about her all of a sudden; Sayaka gets upset and insists she feels quite the opposite, and so their banter begins anew, proving that as much things change, many things still remain the same. |

Trivia
- Apricot+ happens to be Ume Aoki's circle name [1].
- According with the Drama CD "Farewell Story", Kyoko has been a Magical Girl for a year before she met Mami. Since the Drama CD events takes place one year before the anime events, it is suspected that Kyoko has been a Magical Girl for at least two years, making her the second veteran of the group, after Mami.
- Ai Nonaka describes Kyoko's speech style to be Shouwa-ish (Shouwa era, 1926-1989), meaning an old style of talking.
- In the original draft for the script it is stated that Kyoko did steal the apples in Episode 7.
- Production notes indicate that in Episode 9, Kyoko damaged her entire right torso.
- Her spear appears as linked pieces during combat much like a scorpion's tail, and could be a reference to the scorpion's spear.
- She uses warding spells in battle. Scorpions are often associated with protection/warding spells, in Egypt and Tibet the Scorpion is made into an amulet - signifying protection and warding off evil.
- The scorpion character who appears in Goethe's Faust is caught between the extremes of heaven or hell. Kyoko commits sins like letting people die and (likely) steals food, but in the same time she's seen as praying and she never allows wasting food.
- Despite appearing in the same grade alongside Madoka and Sayaka, it is possible that Kyoko is older than them, since there's no indication that she continued with school after the death of her family.
- Despite not having an official birthday stated, on May 9th of 2024, Aniplex America made a post that wished her a 'Happy Birthday'. Two days later they would follow up with an apology.
- In Magia Record:
- Her unique Memoria Card was originally a passive.
- Kyoko's halloween outfit is the same as the one she wears in this promotional image.
- In Kyoko's transformation video, a pixel version of Yuma can be seen on the game's display screen.
- Her Magia, Kugatachi, refers to a trial by fire. The suspect had to place their hands in a bowl of hot water; if they were truly innocent, they would not be burned.
- The pink knot at the front of her Doppel's candleholder steed resembles the head of her younger sister, Momo. This resemblance was noted in the Doppel's first description before it was later edited.
- There are two variants of her Swimsuit unit's Magia attack where Sayaka wears a different outfit in each:
- In one, Sayaka wears her swimsuit outfit (not her surfer unit's outfit).
- In the other, Sayaka wears the mushroom-style swimsuit Kanoko Yayoi designed in Beachside Bonds.
- The music in her Swimsuit unit's transfromation video strongly resembles the song “Running in the 90s” by Maurizio De Jorio, which became a popular meme after being featured in the anime Initial D: First Stage.
- The film from Sayaka and Kyoko's Scene 0 4 star Cards mirror each other.
Observations
- In Japan the colour red is associated with sacredness and resistance to negative energies which could be connected to both her Father's religious work and her continuing to fight after her wish indirectly caused the death of her family, something that would probably cause most Magical Girls to give into despair.
- In Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Different Story a news broadcast indicates that a private residence in Kazamino City was caught on fire, inside the residency they found the bodies of the three members of the Sakura family. According with police the residents were forced in multiple suicide but the broadcast doesn't mention any other details. It is not known if the police suspected the father, or if the private residency was the Sakura Church.
- The Oriko manga reinforces the idea that Kyoko lacks a permanent residency, instead she takes shelter at a fancy hotel (it is never stated how is she able to afford it or what trick she used to obtain a room).
- This magazine article confirms the suspicion in regards to Kyoko's income, it also supports the idea that Kyoko has the ability from her wish to charm others ("mind trick") but doesn't use them as she suppresses them subconsciously because of the trauma with her family. Her powers had been described as persuasion/hallucination.
- Kyoko offers an apple to Sayaka while she advises her to live a life of selfishness but Sayaka refuses both of them. Sayaka believes that Kyoko's self-centered philosophy is just wrong and also rejects the fruit because she apparently believes it was stolen. Her attempt to tempt Sayaka with an apple and her suggestion to follow a path of selfish survivalism could be interpreted as Kyoko acting as the snake advising Sayaka to abandon the path of justice.
- Kyoko's father could be an Anglican priest since he is married, has children, and his clergy outfit is similar to their style. Another evidence is that his cathedral shares some architectural similarities to the Canterbury Cathedral.
Etymology
- Kyoko's first name contains the character for "apricot" (杏子), a symbol of strength achieved through struggles with adversity.
- She may be named after Kyoko Kirisaki from the Black Cat manga series, a girl with the ability to create and control fire and with a penchant for killing others by incinerating them from the inside out. Similar to Kyoko's relationship with Mami, Kirisaki is rescued by the manga's protagonist and becomes infatuated with him, even adopting his personal philosophy of not killing others senselessly. In the manga series To Love Ru, from the same creators of Black Cat, there exists a character of the same name who is a popular idol and star of the magical girl TV series Magical Kyoko.
- Her surname, Sakura (佐倉) is homophonic to Sakura (桜), which means "cherry blossom", which, according to Buddhist tradition, symbolizes the transience of life.
- The first character for Sakura (佐) means "to help" while the second (倉) means "warehouse."
