Puella Magi Madoka Magica Manga (New Complete Edition)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (New Complete Edition) (魔法少女まどかマギカ【新装完全版】, Mahō shōjo Madoka magika [shinsō kanzenhan], lit. Magical Girl Madoka Magica [New Complete Edition]) is a 2021 redrawn two-volume manga adaptation of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime, based on Gen Urobuchi's scenario and illustrated by Hanokage. Each chapter of the manga corresponds to one episode of the anime. The first volume covers material from the first through sixth episodes of the anime, and the second volume episodes seven to twelve.

The first edition of the manga was started early and did not account for decisions made during production of the anime, resulting in a number of differences between the two. For the tenth anniversary of the anime, a new edition was commissioned, entirely redrawn to more closely match the visual style of the anime.

Hanokage, the mangaka, describes the creation of the new edition in the first volume's afterword:

One day, I was approached by Houbunsha, who said, “We're thinking of releasing a new edition of the original Madoka Magica comic book to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Madoka.” Initially, the plan was to release a new edition with only changes to the background and weapons.
When I tried to fix it, I dug up the data from 10 years ago and checked it, and I gave up, saying “Oh, this is no good!” The touch of the drawings was so different that it was actually difficult to fix just the parts or the background. After all, 10 years have passed…
I said, “Please let me revise everything!” The editor said, “Please do!” And so this new, complete version was born. The end.

Differences from the anime

The new edition is drawn in a visual style much closer to that of the anime, but retains some content changes, like the additional scenes at the end of chapters 9 and 12.
