Old stuff

This is a temporary layout. The translated parts should be displayed in a table or something; like one column for the screencap, one for the transcription/translation, and one for additional notes and speculah --[[Homerun-chan]] 12:45, 19 January 2011 (CST)

Archaic 'L' and modern 'I' are the same. Archaic 'I' should be changed. Commie 06:30, 20 January 2011 (CST)

The rune font is pretty awesome. One improvement could be tho, that it could probably be adjusted better to the full height, instead of x-height. --Piparkaq 03:25, 21 January 2011 (CST)

Just wondering, why are there some parts in bold? If there is a particular reason (which I guess there is, there's no way shaftfags would do things randomly), then it should be explained somewhere (right before the chart maybe) --Homerun-chan 11:54, 21 January 2011 (CST)

How does 5 symbols translate into 2011? No matter how I look at it, it absolutely cannot be 2011. If you must insist into making it "numerical runes", then it's something like 22*11 Voting for revert. Mic2070 00:55, 22 January 2011 (CST)

2 is actually the 0-0 thing seen in the screencap. It's one symbol. I think some in a recent thread have been looking at the barcodes present in the mami mogu mogu box and the bottles, and analyzing the barcodes for their numbers. Holycrap 01:07, 22 January 2011 (CST)

Ok, I saw it. I'm currently catching up on the threads, sorry. I'll add that to the image's description, because it's really subtle Mic2070 01:10, 22 January 2011 (CST)

Why don't we agree that the 3rd rune shown is 2? It appears in the "Prolog Im Himmel 2011" shot too, so it's consistent --Homerun-chan 17:03, 31 January 2011 (CST)

Musical runes

Seems like the musical runes are made up of "real" musical notation parts. Going to make a set of the elements to make it easier to make the runes. --Piparkaq 09:16, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

IE9 TTF support

It seems IE9 will not render a TTF font located on the web, unless it's "allowed to serve it from a web server", in order to avoid license problem. Does any people know how to fix it and make it shown properly under IE9? -- 14:25, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Someone just fixed it?-- 16:09, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Use this free tool so you can make it render.

X and Q

Forgive my curiosity, but I'm wondering where the "X" and "Q" runes appeared in the anime. -- Universalperson 12:51, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

They appear in the OP, in the scene where Madoka transforms with the assist of the other pink-haired girl. From ep2 onwards, there are runes floating all around the transformation bubble. Ep6 is best for inspection, thanks to its background color alternation (some shots have darker background that way). Apparently someone inspected that scene veeeery closely and found two unidentified runes. How did he conclude which of them is Q and which is X, remains a mystery to me. and found that some runes are spinning and fading into each other in alphabetical order. It's even pointed out in the "The runes for 0-6 as well as Q and X." image above. --KFYatek 13:39, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Oh! Can't believe I missed that! Thanks! -- Universalperson 15:02, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Q Rune

Now that we've gotten a good look at the Q rune, is someone going to add it to the page, and/or the ttf? 04:52, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

I'll probably do it later today. --KFYatek 15:29, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
NVM, User:FontAnon made it already. Now just use the new version as the embedded font... --KFYatek 22:05, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Oh f... that Texturae font is epic. --kFYatek 09:21, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Amazing. The Texturae font distinguishes ß's lower and upper case. Our main font treats lower case ß as Archaic and doesn't support its upper case. How about putting "Modern Runic ß" on "capital ß (U+1E9E)?" 05:43, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with this letter, so I didn't know there's a capital ß, thanks for the info. Added it in the runic font.--FontAnon 21:07, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
It was only added recently in the standards (2008). Since ß is never used at the start of a word, the uppercase form is only used in all-caps words, where it is usually replaced by SS. See -- 16:49, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Just what I saw. The capital ß in the runes' page is replaced by SS. An "SS" but a SINGLE character. It changed to its original form after being copied into MS Word. 06:41, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Sadly those download links no longer work. The pixiv samples are quite nice but I wonder if there's any way to get the actual fonts? ~ Celtic Minstrel (talk) 20:17, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Handwritten MadokaRunes

user:Piparkaq and I have been working on a script version of madokarunes. Has anyone else been giving it a shot? - Prima 07:36, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Looks like some twitter dude did. Anyway I'll give it a try too since I don't have anything better to do today ... --Homerun-chan 11:37, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh shit, you're onto my second twitter account! Σ(゚Д゚) --Piparkaq 06:46, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I noticed it when you posted your link on the IRC yesterday. Well that explains the Yuno-anthony avatar --Homerun-chan 08:29, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Wow, someone was bored in class. Though it's only normal, Kazumi and half the other pages I started were written by hand in class as well :P --BrickBreak 11:51, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Addin my share with the runes I tried this morning. Most of the time, we can consider the modern and archaic runes to be coming from a common "ancestor", so I tried to do something in-between (just like prima and Piparkaq actually). Most of the time you end up with either version by writing faster (i.e. miswriting the circles, closing parts that shouldn't be, etc.) --Homerun-chan 18:27, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Greasemonkey Script

The Greasemonkey Script is quite out of date. It accesses alphabets by the early deciphering table which has a mistake on runic W. 10:14, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Madokarune: Numerials

Carsalesman numerials.jpg

Stumbled upon this on reddit and immediately noticed some similarity between this and madokarune, even if it wasn't one-to-one correspondence.

Roughly, the madokarune matrix is appx

  • 1, 2, 4 1, 2, 4
  • 3, 7, 8 3, 7, 8
  • 6, 9, 5 6, 9, 5

The only odd-rune-out is 9. Maybe I am overthinking this, when is OST2 coming out? - Prima 22:36, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

"Whether by mistake or on purpose (to frustrate codebreakers) approximately half of the lines of script contain one or more typos or misspelt words."

I would bet on being a mistake since Japanese people tend to misspell western words often in anime. Evidences: (You can easily find more) -- 00:26, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

All of the spelling errors occurred during transcription from German into runes. If you look at those German sentences in the production notes, they are spelled correctly. --Kureru 02:06, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

The Shape of Archaic Rune O and Ö

Through the BD version, we can see clearly that runic O(archaic) is like a reversed S. Will you fix it or just keep the current ʔ-shape? 16:59, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, the current vector is kind of off. You can see the rune really clearly in this shot from the OP, and it's a single S-shaped stroke rather than the two we currently have. Neuchadjinys 23:22, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Oh, um, also, the archaic B and C vectors look much smoother than the actual runes do. Those should probably be fixed too, if it isn't too much trouble. Neuchadjinys 23:24, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, let's make a list, then. It'd be great if someone could fix them. Feel free to add more. --TATZL 17:45, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Fixed archaic O, modern T and modern Y. I'll work in archaic B and C and update the font in a while.--FontAnon 19:32, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Rune Current vector Example of revision Problem/Explanation
B (Archaic) Archaic B.svg Vector looks much smoother than the actual rune
C (Archaic) Archaic C.svg Vector looks much smoother than the actual rune
O (Archaic) Archaic O.svg Oprunes8.jpg The rune should have a reversed 'S'-shape.
W (Modern) Modern W.svg 01-sequence5.jpg

Should be less angular
T (Modern) Modern T.svg BD 6 SS 01.jpg

They look a bit off
Y (Modern) Modern Y.svg BD 6 SS 01.jpg
(Bottom left, in in the word "you")
X (Archaic) Archaic X.svg Majo Moji.jpg
(Bottom right)
Extremities should be a bit smoother
Ö (Archaic) Archaic Ö.svg Same as O. Same as O.
ß (Archaic) Archaic SS.svg Archaic B.svg
Upside down
Same as B.
Ä (Musical) Musical Ä.svg Runes chart expanded.gif Runes previously missing, should look like their normal counterparts with two dots over top
Ö (Musical) Musical Ö.svg
Ü (Musical) Musical Ü.svg
ß (Musical) Musical SS.svg Rune previously missing, should look like a normal B but upside-down
They look great! :) Two more things:
  • The modern 'W' seems a bit rough. It's the right shape, but it looks too smooth and angular compared to the other runes.
  • The archaic 'X' has the opposite problem-- it should be smoother. The scene in episode 11 that it's taken from uses a more... gnarled-looking version of the archaic font (most easily seen with the 'B's). It looks kind of incongruous with the other, less embellished vectors. Neuchadjinys 03:13, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
I think X is not a problem. Shining runes in OP is always "bold." The current X is following this picture E11Alphabet.jpg.jpg. The picture of opening has spun a little, so it's not suitable for reference. Archaic X is perfect already, no need to fix. 06:08, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
Don't you think that the space of musical ÄÖÜß is kept because they aren't officially appeared? Is it possible that the umlauts are shaped in whole notes? 18:58, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Not sure if anyone uploaded this, but there's a clean reference for Archaic font in Production Note:
Majo Moji.jpg
Unfortunately none for Modern and Musical, though. --0x99 13:49, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
So it is an official rune chart. This is my personal view: "We don't need to copy it perfectly. I prefer thinner and clearer strokes, which are more like real text." 16:09, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
Oh, hey! It looks like the chart agrees with me. The X there is exactly the same as the one in the OP, and not the modified one from episode 11. How about I put it back on the table, then? Neuchadjinys 18:02, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
Ya, nothing is more powerful than it to be a reference. Although I prefer the current one. 03:33, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Font Update

Seeing how many of the runes have been updated and look different than how the website has them (like the runes on the Witches' pages), should the website be updated to reflect the updated runes? Also, the downloadable fonts should be updated as well since their last updates were in November. 20:20, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Embedded runes in Wiki now use the 11/11 version (as of now; I actually updated it a while ago but it was uploaded to the old assets directory. Oops.) If you have a newer runes TTF, feel free to point me to. --0x99 23:07, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm actually waiting for someone to make an updated TTF myself. I don't know anything about creating fonts 23:46, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
It has been over a year. Is anyone ever going to update the download links for the runes TTF? AntMan9751 03:15, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

[ *[ Single Letters (SVG)] (Updated: 11/11/11) (Dead link March 2014) <!-- Dead link. If anyone has the file, please upload it and replace this link. --> ]

I have something that looks like the older January version of that, but not the newer November one. November was uploaded by Kureru whose contribs page lists individual .svg uploads too, so the new one is probably just this plus the updates from the current page's runes table or Kureru's contribs. Rough translation: So, it looks like we're finally one month before the release date. The next story looks like it's a bit different from what I thought it would be. You guys [???] but I'm only up for how many perks (from buying early access tickets) I get.
I can't decipher "Imizukidai". Maybe it's a typo - "imizuki" could probably mean "loving meaningfulness".
Sorry for butting in as a guest. Just got into Madoka about one or two weeks ago. 08:53, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
That might be an R instead of Z, so いみるきだい / imirukidai instead. - Prima 09:11, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Ah, then the sentence would make sense. The revised sentence would translate to "How many times are you guys intending to watch it (the movie)?" 09:51, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Can we please make a page for the runes from the first two movies? :) It would help and i've spotted a few runes in Gertrud's barrier. These do count as runic texts worth seeing on the wiki right? - Espeon 20:11, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Is there a download for Modern / Musical's 'v' & 'x'

Hello, I downloaded the two fonts for usage and noticed that Modern is missing a 'v' & 'x' symbol while Musical is missing a few. I am wondering if this was intentional. Bunai (talk) 08:50, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Wild guess of what the unknown rune might be this fucker ſ tell me that the unknown rune does not look a bit like like the archaic f rune(i'm saying this because in my font ſ looks like lowercase f without the right side of the mid-stroke, ſf) the main snag i see with this theory is that i have no idea where the unknown rune appears nor which part of the word it is. SayakaACutieACUTIE (talk) 03:47, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Modern "p"

It might not be the first time it has been reported, the shape of the [Modern] "p" used in the Game: Magia Record is different from the "p" provided by this wiki.

It is probably because the Runes were created from a blurry image. [Modern] Runes is used much less frequently than [Archaic] Runes, and as far as I know, the type example of [Modern] "p" is only the text, "Planm[äß]i[g] zurechtbiegen" in the anime: Madoka Magica Episode 1 (also repurposed in Magia Record Episode 11)."

Because this wiki treats [Modern] Runes as a lowercase character, it is often used here, in spite of its infrequent official use. This wiki and 4chan have been played a significant role in deciphering Madoka Runes. So, the fonts provided on this wiki and their successors are still widely used in the Madoka Magica fandom. Thus, surprisingly, many of the strings of "puella magi" written in Runes on the Internet differ from the official ones. --Mokyubacky (talk) 16:32, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

I forgot to add that the rune of 8 also seems to differ from the official one. The runes of number are probably based on the rotating runes in the opening, so it is not surprising that the runes flipped left to right.--Mokyubacky (talk) 01:30, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

This was updated on the page but in PNG format. Is there an SVG of it? ~ Celtic Minstrel (talk) 17:20, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Witch of Symbols Runes

Two new runes were added with the introduction of the Witch of Symbols, although there were some confusions to what this runes represented, and that one looked similar to the number 2, it seems this two new runes correspond to ^ (caret) and - (negative), as the Witch of Symbols name may be "10^-43". I was wondering if they could be added to the list of runes, and in what format they should be added. Karminja (talk) 23:19, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

I tried to upload the new runes as svg. format but I couldn't manage to make their thumbnails visible as png. :(
But I was capable of making bigger and more legible the two new runes. If anyone wants or knows how to make them into the svg format, I can left here the two runes, which I also updated into the page. Here they are:

Karminja (talk) 22:46, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Could you upload the - one as SVG format as well? I know the thumbnail doesn't work, but if you click through to view the actual file, that works. It won't be usable for placing on wiki pages until 0x99 fixes the SVG thumbnail generation, but at least it's available if someone wants to download the SVG. ~ Celtic Minstrel (talk) 01:28, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I will update the minus symbol with the svg format. Thanks Karminja (talk) 19:38, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

New MagiReco runes??

With the 6th anniversary update, the Nightmares were added to Magia Record, with their own Runic names... except those runes don't seem like anything I've ever seen before. I can't find a single match between them and the runes chart. Am I looking at them wrong or are they actually brand-new?

EPF (talk) 10:12, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Ah, supposedly, they read Kumanokonoyume and Yaginokonoyume. Now that I look at them, they really are somewhat similar to regular, Latin letters. EPF (talk) 10:25, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
Is this a new font, then? Interesting. PureChaos (talk) 02:46, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
Seems so, yeah. I (somewhat crappily, admittedly) made SVGs of the known Latin runes, and put them in this table: (if only previews generated properly...) -EPF (talk) 07:31, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
EDIT: I also uploaded PNG versions and changed the files in the table to .png so they can be actually seen. The SVG files have the same names but different extension EPF (talk) 13:17, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
I wonder what the runes should be called. We could call them "Latin" temporarily, but that may be too assuming of the runes. Since they were introduced with the Nightmares, maybe they will be named after the Nightmares? Maybe I'm in over my head with this, but I am very curious about these runes. PureChaos (talk) 20:56, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
Eh, we don't know if they'll ever be Nightmare-only, they've only just been used for the first time. Plus it's not like modern/archaic really has any clear "basis" either, as far as I know. I think Latin is a good name for them, since they resemble regular Latin letters more. EPF (talk) 18:40, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Since we had the caret character and negative symbols added in the runic list, is it possible to have the question mark from Walpurgisnacht's name as well? It would be bad if we treated it as if it didn't exist. WizardFlower (talk) 01:44, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

The ""Unidentified"" Rune

Hey guys where does the unidentified rune appears? User:Max ramirez

The "unidientified" rune appeared only in Kazumi Magica, and it seems it was actually an error made by the autors of Kazumi, as this rune was only used in the first edition for the witch form of Niko Kanna. The user who uploaded the rune put this in the file: "This unidentified archaic rune was used to represent the letter N in the word Kö[n]igin. The brackets show where the rune was used." So this rune is an N, but it seems it was a mistake and that Rune isn't actually canon. Also, as a side note, you have to add the topic as in the talk pages and put four tildes at the end of your comment so the wiki automatically can put your user name. Greetings :) Karminja (talk) 04:50, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
