Planning

Akiyuki Shinbo, Mitsutoshi Kubota, Ume Aoki, Gen Urobuchi, and Atsuhiro Iwakami began discussing a sequel to Rebellion right after its theatrical release.[7] From the beginning, the team wanted the main characters to either confront Walpurgisnacht as an enemy, or uncover her identity. Iwakami thought it would make a good story as it addressed a loose thread from the original television series.[7] Shinbo envisioned Walpurgisnacht's backstory to be something similar to Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince and sought to incorporate those elements into the new movie.[8] He also requested for Witch Girl (魔女っ子 Majokko) to be added, believing this could be achieved using the Nazukasokotsune concept,[9] to establish Magical Girls vs. Witch Girls in the new movie.[8] Urobuchi finished the first, short plot outline in 2014.[7]

In 2015, Shinbo storyboarded what would "connect to a sequel" for Shaft's 40th anniversary event, Madogatari, which resulted in Concept Movie.[10] The team spent the next few years working on the script, and also explored the possibility of making the sequel a TV series, although Shinbo wanted to make it a movie.[10]

Design

During the production of Concept Movie, the production team wanted to update the characters to align with Ume Aoki's latest art style.[10] For the new characters, Gekidan Inu Curry drew rough sketches based on Akiyuki Shinbo's Witch Girl concept, which Ume Aoki then re-designed.[10] Because these characters were designed before the script was finalized, only few characters ended up being used in Walpurgisnacht: Rising.[11][12] Some of the initial designs can be seen in Concept Movie.[10]

Ume Aoki distinguished Witch Girl from Magical Girls by highlighting their pupils and giving them a black undershirt.[11][12] She was also responsible for the stick that these new characters use.[11] For existing characters, Ume Aoki redesigned them based on the ending of Rebellion, reducing everyone's skin exposure to express that they're restrained, except for Homura, who is now free.[11][12]

Worldbuilding

Gekidan Inu Curry's Doroinu started collecting his worldbuilding idea notes for the series right after the production of Rebellion.[13] During the original television series, Aniplex asked him to make a 魔女図鑑 (Majo Zukan lit. "Witch Archives") to be posted on the website. He started writing his idea notes from the fact that Walpurgisnacht has no name.[13]

The notes, colloquially referred to as "Inu Curry's Note"[14], detailed worldbuilding materials for the series, such as details on Witches, the state of the world after Rebellion, Homura's plan in her altered Mitakihara, the lore behind Walpurgisnacht,[14] or the concepts behind トカゲさん電話の噂 (Tokage-san Denwa no Uwasa lit. "Lizard Phone's Rumor").[13] The notes also outlined character concepts, such as "the character that would be Walpurgisnacht who keeps calling Madoka 'Marguerite' and fixates on her"[8], Selema's relationship with Kyubey, and the backstory about Choka's father.[14] Some of these notes can be seen in the Concept Movie.[13]

Relationship to Magia Record

During the development of Magia Record, developer f4samurai consulted Gekidan Inu Curry's Doroinu regarding the worldbuilding. When f4samurai proposed "Ghost of the Friendship Ending Staircase" (絶交階段の幽霊) concept, among other "Ghost of ..." (○○の幽霊 ○○ no Yuurei) concepts, Doroinu noted the similarity to Lizard Phone's Rumor concept he had made for Walpurgisnacht: Rising, and instead offered them to use "Rumor" as an overarching theme in the game.[13]

Although Gekidan Inu Curry's Doroinu originally planned to reveal Nagisa Momoe's true personality in Walpurgisnacht: Rising, he instead chose to introduce it via one of Magia Record's events. He expected that the player could view her behavior as Magia Record universe-specific quirk, and it would still provides a surprise when the new movie is released.[13]

Script

Gen Urobuchi began working on the script roughly a year after Rebellion, following his screenplay work on Kamen Rider Gaim, between 2014 and 2015.[14][15] After Rebellion, Urobuchi ran out of ideas for the series, and initially intended to hand the series over to other writers to continue.[14] When he told the production team about his lack of ideas, Atsuhiro Iwakami showed him a "stack of documents" containing Inu Curry's Note.[14] Urobuchi thought he could write a script using these ideas, and began the writing process. He described the writing process as "cooking with ingredients someone else has prepared for him", although he did came up with the twist behind Marguerite on his own.[14]

During the writing process, the production team considered making Walpurgisnacht Rising a two-part movie to help with the script's density.[16] Urobuchi introduced several new scenes to accommodate that split, such as Selema and Nagisa playing in the amusement park. Although the team ultimately opt to make Walpurgisnacht Rising a single-part movie, these additions remained in the final script, making it even denser.[16] Urobuchi finished the first draft of the script around the same time as the storyboard for Concept Movie was finalized.[10]

Because the original script was written from Homura's perspective, original series director Akiyuki Shinbo felt Madoka's presence was too weak.[16] In 2015, he asked Urobuchi to rewrite the script from Madoka's perspective, as Rebellion was already about Homura, and he wanted the new movie to focus on Madoka.[17] Urobuchi gave permissions to the production team revise his script, as he did not have time to do so himself.[16] The production team spent the next few years revise the script,[16] including asking other writer to rewrite it based on the same core concept,[17] as well as completely rewriting it from scratch.[16] Shinbo, however, did not find the dialogue to be Madoka Magica-like when it was not written by Urobuchi.[17] Shortly before Madoka 10th Anniversary in 2021, the production team decided to go back to Urobuchi's original script.[16] Urobuchi was surprised to hear they went back to the original script, as it predates Magia Record.[18]

The first half of the final script remained mostly unchanged, but the latter half received a substantial revision, increasing Madoka's presence in the story, expanded Marguerite's backstory, and revised the ending.[16] Urobuchi jokingly said the original revision was "rather blunt", as he'd kill off Choka once her role was done, because he wrote it right after Kamen Rider Gaim and it would have been quite a terrible story to release it as-is.[16]

Production

Tomohiro Furukawa was invited to write a storyboard for the show[18] after Shaft's president, Mitsutoshi Kubota, saw his work on Revue Starlight: The Movie.[17] Kazuki Kawata was asked to join Tomohiro Furukawa after Furukawa asked Shaft to bring "someone young" to help him sketch out ideas, similar to what he did with Goodbye, Lara's director, Takushi Koide, when he was co-directing Revue Starlight.[19]

During the recording, Aoi Yuuki was notified that one of the lines may change. Once the production finished, the line was then changed with the influences from the theme song Kanata, and re-recorded.[20] During the stage greetings, it was stated by Mitsutoshi Kubota that they had recorded the line "I am here" (Watashi wa koko ni iru yo) in four patterns.[21]
