Bittersweet Letters (遺書が紡ぐ悲喜交々) is Yachiyo Nanami's Heartphial Story in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra.
Story
Yachiyo Nanami reflects on her past. She chose to stop making friends, but that was a mistake. Her new friends accepted her despite her callous behavior. She shivers at the thought of losing their companionship.
Yachiyo cleans the kitchen and finds Mifuyu's mug. She wonders where Mifuyu is now. They have been confidants and partners for seven years, but Yachiyo lost track of her recently. She thought they could tell each other anything.
Yachiyo opens a box of letters she and Mifuyu exchanged. They started writing letters after becoming Magical Girls—letters containing their true feelings, meant to serve as wills so the survivor could carry on the other's memory. Yachiyo reads Mifuyu's first letter, which mentions a birthday cake with strawberries. Mifuyu wrote about a Magical Girl they met who died due to the east-west conflict in Kamihama. Mifuyu suggested teaming up with kindhearted Magical Girls to prevent others from suffering the same fate.
Yachiyo remembers becoming a Magical Girl. She had been a model since primary school. Her first group disbanded after a failed audition. When she became leader of a new group, she wished to survive as its leader. It was a shallow wish, but it came true.
She met Mifuyu shortly after her contract. Mifuyu was terrified during their first Witch fight. They became partners after Mifuyu saved Yachiyo's life. They vowed to watch each other's backs.
Yachiyo reads more letters. Mifuyu wrote about birthdays, strawberries, and cake. They began competing to find the biggest strawberries for each other's cakes.
Yachiyo became a leader of the west side of Kamihama as Magical Girls in Shinsei, Mizuna, Sankyo, and Sakae strengthened their bond. The east had no leader and remained chaotic. Some suggested expanding into the east, but Yachiyo and Mifuyu argued they should wait for a strong leader to emerge from within.
Yachiyo made a new friend along the way: Kanae Yukino. They prepared a star-shaped cake for Yachiyo's birthday. But Kanae died. Mifuyu wrote a letter saying she did not want Yachiyo to blame herself. Looking back, Yachiyo thinks that was when things began to break down between them.
Yachiyo continued as leader. She formed a new team with Mifuyu, Tsuruno Yui, Mel Anna, and Momoko Togame. Mikazuki Villa was full of life again.
Yachiyo remembers Mifuyu's birthday party. They got a two-tier strawberry cake. Yachiyo and Mifuyu realized they had both mistakenly thought the other loved strawberry cakes. They laughed about it. That day was fun—Yachiyo felt like a normal girl.
Now, no one is left from that time. Mel passed away. Momoko and Tsuruno will not come back. Yachiyo chose to be alone. Mikazuki Villa is quiet. She calls out for Mifuyu to come home.
Tsuruno arrives. Yachiyo tells her the team has disbanded. Tsuruno says things will not be like this forever, that there may be a ray of hope. Yachiyo tells her to go home. She thinks it is for the best.
Yachiyo senses a Witch. Someone is already there. Iroha Tamaki, a girl from another city, is in trouble unable to defeat a Familiar. Yachiyo saves her and tells her she does not belong here.
Several weeks later, Yachiyo writes a letter to herself. She does not want to forget that day. She realizes Tsuruno was right—things had started to change in places she could not see. When one tale ended, another was waiting to begin. Everything began with that fateful meeting with Iroha. It was the start of their new life.
