Story
Part I
Karin remembers her childhood, and how Alina would scold her when she cried after Halloween ended every year. She thinks about how her dream came true, but not everyone is happy because of it. She vows to save Halloween and become the Ruler of Halloween!

Karin then wakes up infront of a shrine gate, she remembers her mission and adventures through Candyland and Artland. She then remembers how she ended up here, while riding on her broom with Alina, planning to find Artland's ruler, she started feeling a breeze. Alina pointed out how it's more like a storm, which frustrates Karin. Alina calls her an idiota and tells her to look, but Karin looks at her instead of looking forward and the two crash. As Karin thinks about where she and Alina are now, she sees a group of people standing over her. When asked who they are they tell her that they are ghosts, this scares Karin and Alina appears to tell her to shush. Karin is glad to see Alina is okay, to which Alina says she can float and complains about never riding her broom again. The group is suprised they managed to scare anyone again, Karin asks them if they really are ghosts, as they don't look like ghosts or give that vibe off. Before they can explain, the Gatekeeper, Kyoko Sakura, shows up. She meets Karin and is quite frustrated that she doesn't even know where she is. Kyoko explains that Bordertown marks the border between the land of the living and the land of the dead, pointing to the gate. Karin writes in her notebook how ghosts would come to the world of living only on Halloween, but now that it's Halloween everyday her "Ghost" arc begins?!
Kyoko introduces herself as the Gatekeeper and Karin introduces herself and Alina-senpai, telling Kyoko how she uses hearts for her art. Kyoko understands this the wrong way and Alina calls her an idiota, annoying her. Karin quickly explains that she doesn't actually rip people's hearts out and instead peeks into them, Kyoko calls it creepy and Alina is only more frustrated. Kyoko asks Karin how she plans on bringing Halloween back if it happens every day, and so Karin explains her motivation on bringing back the real Halloween spirit. Alina tells Kyoko to just ignore Karin. Kyoko decides to stop the duo and tells them that they should get out of Bordertown while they can. She explains how it was her job to keep the two worlds apart, she had to make sure ghosts didn't leave the world of the dead and vice versa. Because on Halloween the ghosts could come back to the world of living, she had to watch over them and make sure every ghost returns to the world of the dead once Halloween was over. Now that Halloween is daily, the gate is kept open at all times and her title as the Gatekeeper doesn't mean much. Karin believes the ghosts staying isn't that bad, Kyoko wants to disagree, but suddenly Karin feels a Witch.

Karin worries about her fighting weakness, but Kyoko decides to deal with it herself, killing it in one shot. Karin asks her if she's also a Sorceress but Kyoko denies it. Kyoko explains that Witches gather near the gate often, being attracted to the ghosts' sorrow and regret, and so she had to gain the power to fight them. Karin gets happy now that she knows not only Sorceresses can fight, but Kyoko thinks about the point of doing all of this in the first place. She thinks about how hard it is to keep dealing with the ghosts and Witches. Karin argues that the ghosts would be stuck in the world of the living, but Kyoko doesn't think that's a bad thing, and only in the worst scenario would some of the ghosts turn into evil spirits. Karin can tell that Kyoko looks sad and argues that it's a big deal, but Kyoko dismisses her. She then asks Karin if she can take over as Gatekeeper, to which Karin eagerly agrees, believing she can fix Bordertown and help the ghosts return to the land of the dead. Kyoko is surprised as that's not what she asked for but Alina tells her that there's no point in trying to stop Karin after she gets hyped about something. Alina decides to not get involved and to wander around Bordertown for a while, leaving Kyoko with Karin. Karin believes that she has to fix this issue before fixing Halloween even if she's going against Alina's advice, and so her "Ghost Whisperer" arc begins!

Karin thinks about how she should start, frustrating Kyoko a bit. Karin thinks about Kyoko mentioning the ghosts' regrets and sorrow and she believes that once the ghosts' unfinished business gets resolved they can return to the land of the dead. The ghosts have no idea if she's right, but she stays believing she's right and makes Kyoko work with her. She asks one of the ghost about their regrets, the ghost tells her that he always wanted to fly. Karin is confused that Ghosts can't naturally fly but he says that they can only float. They decide to fly on the broomstick, Kyoko worries because Karin crashed it last time, but Karin is confident she learned from her mistakes. Karin takes the ghost up into the sky and even does loops with her broom. On the ground, the ghost admits to being scared of dying again, which frustrates Kyoko who thinks Karin failed, but the ghost explains how any type of excitement would be enough to help him move on. The ghost then fades away, crossing over the gate.

Karin is surprised that she succeeded, but gets a bit sad, Kyoko notices this change but Karin asks for the next ghost. The ghost of a man speaks up, wanting to see how his family is doing. Kyoko says that he can just do that himself, but the ghost worries about his family not remembering him. Karin is ready to go but the ghost explains how his family is just a little bird named "Chirpy". Kyoko takes them to the rest of Bordertown where everybody lives, but the ghost says that he didn't live there. Through a forest, the ghost tells them how he preffered to live in the countryside. They find the ghost's home, but Chirpy isn't there. Karin worries about something happening to the ghost if he can't resolve this and return to the land of the dead. After they search the house and don't find Chirpy, Karin apologizes, but the ghost wants to keep looking so they split up. Kyoko worries about Karin, but she doesn't want to pause her work.

Back in Bordertown, the ghost of a girl wishes that she could eat sweets until she couldn't eat anymore. Karin is surprised that ghosts can eat, but Kyoko denies it. The ghost suggests Karin imbue the sweets with her magic, which makes Karin more sure. Kyoko questions Karin's baking abilities, but Karin believes Mami's teachings were enough, even if Alina hated her cookies. Kyoko worries but Karin assures her she learnt from her mistakes. Karin finishes making every kind of sweet treat she could think of and making sure they're magic. Kyoko is impressed and the ghost offers to share and so the two eat. The ghost reminisces of how some of the treats she just ate didn't exist when she was alive, Karin gets confused about her age as she looks around Karin's, but the ghost explains how she died around this age. The ghosts then fades away. After Kyoko notices Karin seeming sad again Karin admits that she feels sad when the ghosts leave, but believes this is the right thing to do. Kyoko doubts that this is even worth the effort, but Karin believes that the ghost's smile was proof of this being a good thing. Kyoko thinks about Karin's positive attitude, but then thinks about herself and her negative attitude, wondering if she has always been like this. Karin snaps her out of her thoughts, wanting to help more ghosts.
The ghost of an old man explains how his wife passed away too soon but he was blessed with a granddaughter, wishing her could see her. The ghost leads Karin to where he used to live and they spot the granddaughter, Karin comments on how she has his eyes but suddenly hears a chirp. She quickly tells Kyoko to find the ghost of the man from earlier, believing the bird must be Chirpy. The ghost is happy to see Chirpy again and talks with the little girl, she apologizes for taking Chirpy and explains how she went to the man's house after he helped her, but only found a sick Chirpy. The man thanks the girl and asks her to take care of Chirpy, which she agrees to, he then happily fades away. The grandfather finally reveals himself to the girl. They bond over her grandmother, as the girl never got to see her. Before leaving, the ghost tells the girl that there's a gift for her in the house's cupboard and that she should open it with the Sorceress. Karin eagerly asks what it is but the ghost only replies that it's magic, atleast enough to put a smile on his granddaughters face. He then thanks Karin and fades away. Karin looks at the gift with the girl, finding a photo album, there they find a picture of the girl's grandparents dressed up as ghosts for Halloween and Karin thinks about how they look more like ghosts in the picture.
Karin goes back to Kyoko and talks about the ghosts, but Kyoko can't grasp how she keeps doing this without it getting to her. Karin thinks about how even though it's sad there's more than that, but she thinks that Kyoko knows this feeling better as she had to say more goodbyes. Kyoko goes deep into thought again, wondering if she really meant what she said when she dismissed the ghosts staying in the land of the living. She then admits to herself that she didn't mean it and remembers a little girl, realizing someone must have messed with her head. As she thinks about who it could have been, Karin suddenly feels a Witch. Kyoko decides to go fight it but without Karin, as she has her own task and admits that the ghosts' smiles made her believe what Karin was saying.
Near the gate, Kyoko finds a lot of familiars and worries about being able to beat them, but Alina, who has been there already, tells her that Karin would have been useless. Alina decides to leave again but Kyoko demands her help. Alina would only fight if she got something, so she requests "material" for her art.

Observations
- Kyoko's Gatekeeper form is almost the same as her Doppel-fusion form from Magia Record. It's unknown if this form has anything to do with her Doppel or Witch form, Ophelia.
- Karin's new Sorceress form has a crown on top of her head that bears the same symbol as the coffin on Alina's outfit, referencing her status as the heir to Artland's throne.
